Burnham vows to ‘reindustrialise Britain’ in first address

[00:00:00]Andy Burnham has been named Britain's seventh prime minister in 10 years in a 6-minute speech delivered without notes or an autocue. Burnham pledged to build a new economy.

[00:00:21]And in doing more, build a new economy where we put life's essentials back under stronger public control to make them affordable to you again.

[00:00:42]>> Joining me now is GB News host Emily Carver. Emily, the speech was big on rhetoric. He's a got a bit of dramatic flair about him, but did we get any policy detail?

[00:00:55]>> I mean, you can tell from that clip that you just played, we're not going to the right, are we? We're certainly going to be going to the left at left of Keir Starmer, that's for sure. But that's one of the many issues, Rita. There's no mandate from the public, no leadership contest, no general election, no proper media scrutiny, no proper media interviews apart from a former footballer Gary Lineker who he had on his podcast.

[00:01:20]A man whose only job for the past 10 years has been mayor of Manchester.

[00:01:24]That's a nice job. It's it's quite a big job, but does that make him, you know, material for number 10? Does that mean he's going to be able to run this country? And yes, yesterday he chose to do his speech without a lectern outside number 10 presumably to give this impression that he's a man of the people, he's less of a robot than Keir Starmer, and that's true. But the only specific pledge we got from him was to instruct his government to end homelessness. Now, Rita, I don't think there's anyone out there who does not want to end homelessness. It's awful.

[00:01:55]But the problem is for Andy Burnham is that homelessness has doubled in Manchester while he's been mayor. So I'm not sure you think she's going to be able to fix it across the entire nation.

[00:02:08]And the cabinet is not looking all that different. He's just reshuffled the decks. So we've got Wes Streeting in defense. Unfortunately for us the former head of the British Army says he knows the square root of nothing about defense. So that bodes well. We've got John Healey now as Chancellor. That's a man who quit his role as defense secretary because there wasn't enough money for defense. Before politics the only jobs he's had were working for a parliamentary magazine and doing a bit of trade union communications. We've got Angela Rayner back in housing who resigned from all her posts last year after she failed to pay enough tax on her 800,000 pound flat. So that bodes well, too. And we've got Louise Haigh back in government despite despite a fraud conviction. So I fear it's more of the same, Rita.

[00:02:55]>> More of the same and it's a worry if he's left of Keir Starmer because he was plenty left.
