This systematic restoration is a masterclass in technical discipline, transforming a relic of decay into a functional piece of history through methodical problem-solving. It perfectly illustrates how engineering rigor can overcome the entropy of long-term neglect.

Can I Save My Abandoned Hot Rod Morris Minor?Hinzugefügt:
Ah, I see an issue.
I see an massive issue. I have no idea how fast I'm going. I can smell a lot of burning. I actually cannot believe this is going as well as it's going.
Hi, and a massive welcome back to the channel. So, if you didn't see the first video on this, this is my abandoned hot rod Morris Miner. I'll put a link to it up there.
We picked this up. This had been sitting for about 30 odd years. Someone's wild creation of a sort of hot rod Morris Miner with a Japanese engine in it.
Thank you so much to everyone who watched the last video and helped me out with what the engine is cuz I didn't actually know what it was and everyone I asked didn't know, but you clever people out there do know do know your stuff. It is a Mazda UC engine. But yes, in the last episode we manag to get this running.
Come on.
Got it driving, fixed all the brakes, got it moving, and it has a really bad shutter when you take off the um the clutch in first gear. Only in first gear, no other gears. So, a lot of people suggested engine mounts or gearbox mounts or rubber donuts or things like this. So, going to get the car over the pit. We're going to have a look and see if we can figure out what that is. We've also got quite a lot of rust on this car and we're going to be inspecting it. See if we can cut it all out, weld it up. I've got a new floor panel to go in the back here. Yeah, we want to basically get this thing back on the road. At the moment, none of the lights are working. No headlights, no brake lights, no indicators, none of that's working. So, we need to fix all of that. Hopefully, by the end of this video, we've welded this up. It's a solid car and it can actually be driven on the road, which I'm really looking forward to driving this. And hopefully I get to take it to some shows and stuff.
But yeah, it's over the pit. Let's get inspecting. See how bad it is underneath. See if we can figure out what that big big shutter is. Let's get to it. So, the car's over the pit. Let's just see how bad it is under here. I'm kind of dreading this. I reckon it's going to be pretty bad.
All right, let's start with this section.
To be fair, lot of surface rust here, but doesn't look bad. Some got to say that again. has had a lot of plates welded in it and some plates have not been done terribly well, but they don't look that bad. I got to admit, they're not great. The chassis leg look too bad. There's a hole there.
Hole in it there. It up again. There's a hole here. I think it's not awful though. I can weld that up. Doesn't look that bad.
I mean, this had it definitely had lots of plates put on it. Brakes look good. I mean, obviously the only thing we have worked on there's definitely a leak in this steering rack here. And let's see if we can figure out what this shutter is then. So, this gearbox mount is it?
Don't know if it's that or this gearbox mount. That's loose.
Doesn't seem loose. Seems all right to me. I really need to be under here whilst someone's trying to pull it away so I can see what's shaking. This surface rust everywhere.
I think it it should clear up.
Doesn't look completely rotten. It's just a lot of surface rust. Like all of this, there's crazy amount of surface rust. But I think I think it's actually rotten under there. All right. So, the car's now the other way around. Looks like our rear suspension is just held in by these homemade plates here. I'm not sure I like them too much. I think I'm going to clean up all around here. Maybe brace them up a bit more cuz I don't obviously there was an MOT tester who didn't like the way that looked. I don't think it's not awful, but you know, I've seen worse. What we got around the back here? Oh, so this chassis leg looks pretty bad.
This rail here that's got some holes in it. Definitely. This corner of this boot floor doesn't look too bad.
But the corner of this one's completely gone. Ah, I see an issue.
I see an massive issue.
This bit here that's rotted out on this side doesn't actually exist on this side.
That's weird.
So, it was there once upon a time. Just rotted away. So, this whole area needs quite a lot of work. I wonder if I can buy this part here cuz it really doesn't look good. So, we need to whatever this bit is. I wonder if we can buy this this piece that's missing that's on this side but not on the other side. So, that's where the shock used to mount to.
But now our shocks mount up here into this central.
That's not bad. That's quite good actually. I don't mind that. There's nothing wrong with that.
That's I'm not happy with this corner.
We've got quite a lot of work to do. So, let's crack the welder out, get the goggles on, start cutting, and see how much this we can save and how much we can strengthen this up.
So that's that panel sort of where it is going to be in the car. Need to do a lot more cleaning up, but I've just ordered a couple of these spring hanger panels here. Um cuz this side hasn't got one at all and there's a massive gap.
So that gap should get filled in when I put the new big spring hanger panel. But yeah, the Thor is pretty much where it needs to be. It needs a couple of fettling and adjusting, but just going to probably weld around just the seam.
Flush it out a bit. But what I do need to do, which I probably should have done right at the beginning, is remove this fuel tank because if I start welding that close to the fuel tank, it'll be bound to catch light, aren't we? So, so I go pick those panels up, get the fuel tank out of there, get these spring hangers off, but obviously weld it all in, and then that should be the back end welded up. But yeah, let's keep going.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Hey, I'll figure Heat. Hey, Heat.
All right. So, that's my back panel pretty much in. I'm pretty much done with most of the welding around the back end. This really isn't isn't my finest work, but this legs now I mean exists now. That's in welded in from the other side as well. I do need to do this side as well, but I'll probably do this off camera because um it takes a long time to to weld these in. So, I'm going to cut that one out. I think the outside on this isn't actually that bad, so I'm probably just going to try and trim it off on the inside here. Spot welded all along the edges. The welding isn't really pretty, but I'm going to grind it all back. Bit of seam sealer. Trying to stop the water from getting in. Bolt this back up. I think it's pretty much in the place it should be. I really should have measured it, but you know what? I don't care too much. But yeah, that is almost the back end complete.
Just got to do that that chassis leg and then it's all ready to go.
All right, so that's the back end fully welded up. Pretty happy with it. I mean, it's not it's not the best work I've ever done. To be fair, I probably could have done a bit of a better job, but it's not that bad. That's all in there.
boot floor.
All this side done as well. That one done. I haven't really ground back my welds. But this car is not definitely not a show car. So, it is just, you know, trying to get it back on the road.
I've also got a wire wheel and wire wheeled all of the floor pan down at the back here and then giving that a blast. Looks pretty good. I mean, there's a couple bits that definitely will need addressing at some point. This back end is definitely way better than it was before. So, next to do is roll the car back, start working on the front end. I also really want to take this car for an actual proper test drive on the main road just to see if there are any big problems with it cuz I know the brakes will work fine and the engine runs okay. There's a bit of shudder coming from first gear, but we I can figure it out hopefully. But I do really want to test drive it. In order to do that though, we've got a few issues. None of our lights are working.
No brake lights, no indicators, no headlights, none of it. So, definitely need to look at that. I might look at that now cuz I'm a bit fed up with welding. I've been welding for the last week. So, yeah, I'm going to um probably start looking at the electrics a bit.
All right, let's just get the welding completely out of the way. So, let's just roll this back, finish the welding, and then we can sort the electrics out.
Heat.
Hey, Heat.
Okay, so that's pretty much the welding.
ing done and the undersealing done. I had a little bit of an accident during the welding. I managed to catch my thumb with the angle grinder and it it hurt.
It's pretty It's all right. It's fine.
The irony is I don't know if you remember, but when we picked this car up, it came with all of these antiseptic cleansing wipes, bandages. I reckon this car was trying to tell me something. trying to tell me not to fix it. But yes, we've done it all. Let's get underneath there and I'll show you. Paint's probably still wet.
But yeah, we got a patch there.
All of this is just under seal. It's not terrible. It really isn't that bad of the chassis wise on this car. I mean, it has had patches everywhere as you can tell. Yeah. All up in here. Just just covered everything. Bit of black paint.
I'll wait for it to dry cuz it keeps sticking to my hair. That's where we put a patch in. Just let it dry. But like I say, it's had so many patches, especially around these like floor pans that it's never going to be never going to be a concourse car. I just really want to drive it. But I'm happy that the back end is now solid. Let's let this all dry. Let's get out of here cuz it keeps sticking to my hair. Whilst I'm waiting for the under seal to dry, let's see if we can do something about these electronics on this car. I might need to roll it forwards just so I don't fall in the pit. But yeah, none of the lights are working. None of the indicators. The brake lights were on when we got it and now they're not working at all. So, yeah, let's check out this wiring on this car because it's all going through a Nissan fuse box, which is very strange. But yeah, going to get my multimeter out, test everything, find out why things aren't working, and then we can actually take this for a little test drive. I still think the gearbox mount is what's causing our shuttering issue. And I don't know what the gearbox mount is because it's I have no idea what this car was originally. It's off whatever Mazda the engine came out of.
But yeah, it's um if anyone knows that'd be really helpful so I can replace it. I might be able to take it off and have a look or if I can make a new one somehow.
But yeah, at the moment I'm just going to pull away in second gear cuz you know it's it's not that bad. Let's get this actually working so we can take it on the road.
>> A few moments later. Okay, so I found out a few things whilst I've been fiddling, just having a little fiddle.
So these switches were just really, really dirty. So this switch should it's see it's very intermittent. It doesn't always do it, but this switch should turn the lights on in there in the dial and also turns on my rear rear lights, but doesn't do anything to the headlights.
But this switch should turn my headlights on.
But that switch was really, really dirty. So that needed a lot of work. So now headlights are on. And then if I push the switch on the floor down here, I should get main beam. If I push this.
Yeah. And that wasn't working. The main beam wasn't working because actually had a fuse missing from the end here. And that was the fuse for the main beam. So, all the lights are working now. The indicators don't work. So, I think we need to remove the steering wheel. The stalk. This just doesn't feel right at all. This stick doesn't switch.
Feels really wrong. Feels like someone's mangled it somehow. So, let's take that apart and see what's going on there.
I've also ordered a brake light switch, which is down in there. That is our brake light switch.
Basically, I think it's got like a little um plunger in it, and I think it sees. So, got a new one of those. It was 7 quid. So, let's go pick that up in a minute. Hopefully try and get these indicators working and then everything should sort of be okay for the road.
Prime Minister Okay, now I think I see why there wasn't a bulb in this stalk. It does work, but it just doesn't turn itself off.
That's not going to work. I think we're going to have to remove that bulb. Um, unfortunately, I mean, it can be in for if it was going for anote, it could probably stay in there. It's also very dodgy.
Are they working outside the car? Rear ones.
Front indicators working. Front one's working that side. That one's working, too. I think we're going to have to remove the bulb from the stalk cuz it's just on all the time. Or I could try and fix it, but not crucial right now, I don't think.
Okay, so I've just been to East Sussex Miners. It I'm very very fortunate to have a such a local place that sells every single part for Morris Miners. I think I don't think there is actually anything they don't sell. They've also got some really really nice cars there.
Bit of a weird setup. You order online and then there's a desk where you can just pick your stuff up. It's pretty good though. Like the prices are very very good. So I've just been and picked this up. I've got I've got the boot sort of uh it's called a striker panel. This is what was left of my old one.
So yeah, I think this is 10 quid. I mean, if I wanted to buy the steel just to make that, it would cost more than 10 quid. So, that's good. I've also picked up a new brake light switch. So, let's get that out. Put this one in. Going to have to put some spade terminals on it, but should be fairly easy. Get that in.
Unfortunately, I should have put this on before I started painting in here, but it basically goes somewhere around there. I will measure it all up.
Let's grind this out. Mark this up. Weld that in. And then I can sort of again repaint this because it's a bit annoying. I've already painted it. Match it up with the striker on here. That goes on top. So that goes on there. But yeah, let's get it properly in there cuz it's not it's not fitting very well at the moment. Grind some stuff away. Weld that in. Then our boot should shut. Get the brake lights working. And I don't think there's anything else actually stopping me from driving this apart from the very obvious lack of fuel tank. But I'll chuck that back in as well. Get that filled up.
So, this is the brake light switch just here on these three hydraulic lines.
Pretty sure it's broken. Let's pull it out and put the new one in. And we have to change the terminals. I'm hoping this spanner fits.
Yeah. All right. See if we can get this off here.
Do a quick change over so we don't lose any brake fluid.
[ __ ] Pretty pretty quick change over that I reckon.
This is our wire. It needs two spade connectors on it.
They're on.
Okay. So, I'm just warming the Porsche up to move it out the way. This is basically ready for a test drive. Everything seems to be working. Brake lights, headlights, indicators. That's pretty much all we need. The brakes work. Don't know if it overheats. That's my only thing. I have no idea whether the fan works. So, basically, I'm going to drive it to my old workshop, which is literally about less than a mile away. Um cuz I can put it undercover in there cuz I haven't got a roof for it. So, I'm just going to drive it on that short journey and it should be okay. I'm really hope it's going to be okay. Wish me luck. Just want to take a quick second to say a massive thank you to everyone who watched the first video on this and following the build. Make sure you sub to the channel so you can see where this ends up and hopefully we'll have a great story by the end of this car. Really appreciate you guys. And if you want any merch, check out the website. There'll be a link for it. Hoodies and t-shirts and stickers and stuff. Really appreciate that. But yeah, make sure you sub to the channel if you want to see how this ends up. And let's get back to it.
All right, let's hope this starts. Let's get these screwdrivers out of here.
Fingers crossed. Should still start.
chokes out.
Chuck it in reverse.
When do I have seat belts? I don't think I do.
So, we haven't fixed the first gear issue, that's for sure.
But hopefully we make it where we're going.
So, to pull away, basically just got to pull away in second gear.
Way better. All right, we've pulled out of here. Will it run off choke? I doubt it. I haven't got any seat belts, which I did not know about until I just now.
This How long has this been since this car has been on the road?
Suspension feels okay. I wonder if I'm going to be able to pull away in second gear here. No, this is going to be tough this one. Might just have to dump it first. All right, here we go.
Okay, we pulled away.
You know what? It's not slow. Jesus Christ.
That is not slow. Does not like first gear.
Can't quite see out my mirror.
Indicator.
Steering's all right. Brakes, they're much to be desired. Second gear.
Drop it. Let's go. Give me some wellie.
It is a lot of wind in my face. It stinks of burning. I'll give it that.
Speedo doesn't work.
I have no idea how fast I'm going. I can smell a lot of burning.
Don't know if it's from the clutch.
Still going.
I have no idea. The cars ahead of me have got ahead of me. So, I guess I'm not going the speed limit.
Something doesn't feel quite right. I've got to admit it is uh it's definitely not aerodynamic. It is a lot of wind in my eyes.
Be nice if it had five gears, not four.
Yeah, I really really struggled to pull away just then. So, this is going to be interesting.
Let's go to second gear.
Do it in second. Yeah, we got it. Our ship still indicated. indicate.
I mean, it goes. It does shift.
Something's binding it up, though. It doesn't roll as freely as I'd like.
You know, it might just work its way out eventually, but I think we need to inspect that diff or something.
Woo!
The sheep on the road.
Oh my god. I actually cannot believe this is going as well as it's going. I don't know if I turn the choke off. It might run a bit better. Turn it right off.
The engine sounds sweet as a nut. The uh suspension actually feels really good.
There's nothing weird. I haven't put the steering wheel back on straight.
Apart from like, you know, it's quite a pleasant little drive actually.
It's apart from first gear, it really isn't anything that bad about it. Drives quite nicely.
I'm very impressed that this is actually going. I have no idea what the temperature's like. Then when we get to the when we get to the workshop, we'll have a look, see how hot it is. But the brakes really are not great.
It really shifts quite a lot. Like it feels doesn't feel like a Morris Miner.
It really doesn't. Yeah, it's a bit bumpy. Yeah, it's a bit rotten.
But I've got a smile on my face, you know.
I have no idea how fast I'm going.
Definitely need to sort out that speed, though.
I'm actually thoroughly enjoying this.
Ah, I am breaking the speed limit. There we go. 30. I was going 37 and a 30.
I don't know.
If I could pull away in first gear, this car would actually be a very nice car. I say very nice in a loose loose term. Um, for what it is, it'd be a very nice car.
But yeah, no shuttering whatsoever.
It's really odd.
Choke's fully off.
It's a bit of a bit of a weapon.
So, second gear is the only way only way we can pull away at the moment.
Oh, just hit something really hard on the floor. What was that? Hope it wasn't the engine.
Oh, it's got such an awful turning circle, isn't it?
Call that a success, I reckon.
All right, so it's the next day. I've got to say that was a pretty successful test drive yesterday. I think this is actually going to be quite a nice car when it's all working properly. Only real thing that's letting it down is that first gear. So, let's get it up on this lift here and see if we can see anything more. If I can't see anything, we'll just take it back to the other workshop and probably try and weld up the gearbox mount. And if it stops it, then we know that that's it. We'll have to find some way of fixing it. But let's get it up here. We might be able to see a bit more bit more access with this big lift. It didn't do it pulling out of here. It didn't do any sort of shuttering or anything. I I don't know if it's like maybe the spring on the clutch pedal on on the clutch arm isn't strong enough and it's slipping a bit. I don't know. The spring is very corroded on the clutch arm, so that could be it.
But yeah, let's get it up in the air and see if we can see a bit more.
Swear this is always the way. It's absolutely chucking down rain, but we can sort of see bit under here. Okay, so the mount that I think is gone is this mount here. I reckon that's what's giving me all the trouble. I was thinking of just welding from there to there. Just a bit of plate or something.
And if that stops it, then we know that that's the problem. This is what I mean by the clutch spring. This is a bit useless. Wonder if I've got something I can upgrade that with. Okay, so the car is back off the lift. I think I'm going to try welding up that bracket. I did manage to reposition that spring to make it stronger. Now the clutch should it should come all the way back now. If you let it go, it sort of the clutch pedal comes all the way back up to the top, which is a lot better than it was. So, I think that might help. I don't know. I'm going to take it back to my other workshop and if it's still bad, going to try bracing up that um gearbox mount.
And if that doesn't do it, probably clutch related or gearbox related. Fans now working as well. I did um I did just make the fan so it's on all the time.
I'd like to get a new temperature controller cuz I don't think the one that's working in there. I did run it up to temperature and the fan never came on. So, I think the temperature controller's had it. But I've I put it so it's always on now. When you turn the ignition on, the fan comes on. It's a little fan. It shouldn't make too much difference. Should stay cool. One of the reasons I actually wanted to bring the car up here was if you've been following this channel for a while, a few years ago, I painted a blue Morris Miner for a friend of mine. And here it is. And he's pretty much almost finished it. And it's looking really good. He's just got a couple more bits to do to it interior wise. The paint job really isn't very good, but looks a lot nicer than the one we've got.
Doors shut pretty nicely as well. Yeah, it's got fiberglass wings. Bumper surrounds are fiberglass.
And it's got much nicer than mine.
It's got a 1275 engine in it and it runs absolutely beautifully. This is going to be a very, very nice car when he's finished it. But yeah, seeon as the sun is out now and it's not raining, it's probably about to, I'm going to take the Morris back to the other workshop and see how it does.
I really also want to get that other little bit of trim on that side cuz I found it in the boot and um it will look a lot better with it. Let's hit the open road again and see if this is any better.
There. There's the shutter. Yeah, it doesn't pull away unless I wheel spin.
Does look like rain, so let's get there quickly.
I don't think the engine's quite warmed up yet. Have the choke off.
It runs really well.
Definitely do with some wing mirrors would be nice. I mean, it's a bit of a bit of a cruise at this.
I think on a really nice hot sunny day, this would actually be really nice.
I do keep getting like bits of dust blown in my eyes. That's the only problem. You You could really do with a pair of, you know, driving goggles.
Wouldn't that be a look?
I'm going to have to pull away in second gear here.
Yeah. See, second gear is the only way to really pull away in this car. So, the indicator's on.
Give it some boot.
It has got has got some legs on it.
Problem is, as soon as I get up to like 40 mph, loads of dust ends up blowing in my eyes and I can't see a thing. Oh, look. The clouds are so gray up ahead of me.
It's actually driving pretty nice.
Yeah, it's absolutely pulling away fine now. It's really odd. Let's go from a complete stop.
Absolutely fine. How weird. I don't know. All right, I had to get the car in quick because um I actually took it down the road to get petrol, but the weather is changing real fast here. I need to take my Porsche to the other workshop to do something, but it's just about to chuck it down and rain any second. So, Oh [ __ ] here it comes. There's the hail.
Oh no.
Oh no. Get in.
That was extremely lucky.
Got ice in my hair.
Wow, it's loud in here.
Okay, so the weather right now can't make up its mind whether it's going to thunderstorm or it's going to be sunny or it's going to hail. So, let's get the old roof out cuz this did come with a roof and it's pretty bad. I don't think it's got any tears in it, but we got to figure out a way to get it on the car.
Get it on the floor here, see how bad it is, and jet wash it off and see if it's worth saving. If there's any way we can actually attach it to the front, cuz that's the biggest problem. I think it does actually fit. It just has no way of attaching. Pretty sure it was attached here with these Velcro strips, but they um they are no longer going to work. Yeah, it's pretty pretty gross. The roof, it's definitely like the rest of the car was moldy and dusty. Should clean up okay, though.
There's a few little marks here. Don't think it's got any major tears in it, though. And I think this is an MG [ __ ] roof. I think that's what someone said.
So, I have actually got an MG [ __ ] hard top.
That would be interesting.
Let's see if this works first.
So, it actually looks like the roof will clean up pretty well. These um it's still quite dirty cuz I flipped it over and over washing the inside and outside.
Looks like these um plastic see-through panels are actually pretty clear. The only issue with the roof cuz I got the frame in which is sort of I don't know how this frame is supposed to work. It's not the most robust thing. The front has just been cut basically and it was it was stuck on these bits here. So, I've got to find a new way basically to try and stick that on. I think I might know a way. Let me just show you. All right.
So, I know this doesn't look like it's got anything to do with roofs and it looks like a bush, but in this bush there are actually three MG midgets.
They are just shells. I don't think there's any engines or any running gear in them, but I think they have roofs on them. You honestly, you can't see them at all. There's a blue one, I think a yellow, an orange one, and a white one.
But if I go in here, you can just see the back of one of them. So, get in here. Here we go.
Here is an MG [ __ ] that's been absolutely reclaimed by nature. There's no axles or anything, but there is a roof. And if my roof is the same as this one, there's a front panel here and a panel that goes along the windscreen.
And they I can probably take this off.
See if there's some something we can do with the clips, the windscreen panel. I reckon we'll able to we'll be able to make something with those roofs. I mean, this one's actually got quite a nice interior in it. I mean, the the seats are ripped. I wonder what the other ones are like. You cannot see them. You can't see them at all. I think if you look just in there in there, you can just about see a blue MG [ __ ] as well. The one in the middle, you can't see at all. But they are not salvageable. But if we ever get an MG [ __ ] we know where we can get parts.
So, I'm probably going to save sorting the roof out for another video. We've got loads of other stuff to do to this car. I need to do a full service on it.
Need to check the diff oil cuz it's making a bit of a noise. I think still got some other just some other little bits to sort out. Figure out what we're going to do with the top of that roof.
Also, in the last video, I actually got a message from someone who said their dad created this car and it was actually the creator of this car. And I've been speaking with them on email and I really want to see if I can get it back to them. So, make sure you subscribe to the channel because I'm going to see if we can try and get this car back to them.
It is running and driving, but hopefully in a a roadw worthyish condition. But yeah, we've done all the welding. It wasn't the best welding I've ever seen.
It really really wasn't that good. But this car is never going to be a concourse car. It is a It's had so many patches in over the years, but I'm pretty happy with it. It runs and drives pretty well. If you want to see what happens with this car and the story with it and if we can reunite it with its original owner, then make sure you sub to the channel. And I really appreciate you guys and stay tuned.
