The ATOM 3 delivers impressive tracking precision for its class, yet the lack of obstacle avoidance makes its "intelligence" feel dangerously incomplete. It is a capable tool that demands constant human vigilance to compensate for its inherent environmental blindness.

POTENSIC ATOM 3 - Object Tracking
Added:[music] >> In this episode, we're going to check out the tracking features of the Potensic Atom 3.
The Potensic Atom 3 is available in a fly more bundle, which means you get a soft case to carry everything in, plus you get three batteries, plus you get a remote with a super bright built-in display, and you get the Atom 3 drone, which has features very similar to the existing DJI mini drones on the market.
However, the Atom 3 lacks obstacle detection, so when you fly it, make sure there's no objects around for you to crash into. Behind me, I have my Jeep, and let's see if this baby can track it.
So, I'm just going to place this guy down on the dusty ground and power it on.
Atom 3 is down there, Jeep is over here.
Let's get in the Jeep and see what we can see on the remote.
And let's take it up.
Ooh, lots of dust flying. There's no obstacle avoidance on this baby, so I'm going to have to put it up higher than these light poles. So, let's go way up high high high high high, and there we are. And I'm going to back away.
And look back up.
There we are. So, next thing I plan to do is take my finger and draw a box around my Jeep. There we go. Then it gives me the options. What do you want to do? Parallel, spotlight, or follow?
We're on AI track, as you can see on the bottom. We go to follow. There we are.
You know, one thing I will admit, I have sunglasses and I can still see the display quite well. So, let's go and see what it misses.
I'm going to go this way. I'm going to go all the way over to locations where it has to avoid objects. But, there is no object avoided, so it's just got to fly over everything.
There we are. So, it's doing a good job of tracking the Jeep. I'm not making it do anything crazy.
So, I'm going straight here.
Going at a good pace.
And I'm going to pass the buses, go over to the playground.
Get a little bit of speed.
Yeah, so it's it has no problem tracking. I'll whip around this corner without banging my camera and anything else. It's good.
So, I would trust this for tracking. It seems like it's really good for tracking up high and far away. Look at that. It's got the Jeep and I'm whipping around this area.
So, it's doing quite well. Let me just stop here. There's a bus coming and he's going to go in front of me. Oh, no, he's telling me to go. So, here we go.
Mr. nice bus driver. All right, so it's and we're going to go to the right really quick. We're going over a lot of trees on purpose. See if this thunders into any trees.
And then I'm going to try to lose it here. I'm going over to the left.
Going into an area where there's a soccer tournament about to happen. A lot of trees in here. Lots of cars.
Let's see.
Lots of potholes, too. Good thing I'm in a Jeep. So, I'm going behind trees.
Let's see. Just weaving around here. Oh, there we go. So, it's still got me. No problem.
Hear everything rattling in here and then we're going to whip around this side.
It looks like it's lost me.
>> [laughter] >> It's searching for me.
Oh, oh, oh, highlight me again.
AI track follow and go. There's a car coming behind me.
All right, so I've got it following me a second time.
I didn't see how it lost me. I'll have to rewatch the video to see how it it lost me on that.
So, there we go.
Going this way.
It doesn't seem like it tracks very fast. That maybe that's how it lost me.
See? See what I mean? It's like it slowed down. I'm going to pull into the side here and I'll fly it over. I'll try something different. Let me go to track it in a different way. So, here we go.
Pick me again. This time I'm going to track I'm going to follow it, but actually I want to do over here parallel follow. That's good.
So, we're going to do a parallel follow which just means it should follow on the side. Hit the go.
And let's see.
Does it follow me on the side vice the back?
So, that's the only negative I saw so far is if you're tracking a vehicle, it can't be moving very fast.
It It didn't like it when I went too fast. I do have another car coming up on my left, so I'll let it go by.
And I'll try to get behind it over here.
These guys are all going to a soccer tournament.
There's the kids running out of the car really fast.
So, it should be tracking me from the side and I'm going to do a 90° or 180° turn here. And let's see if it stays on the side.
Does it go on the opposite side? I'm going slow. Giving you a chance.
Did I misunderstand how the parallel track works? I don't know. Maybe it just stays to whatever side. So, it's still on the side. I thought it would jump over to the other side, but it just seems to stay on the other side.
So, that ladies and gentlemen is tracking. I'm just going to park over here and bring it on down. All right, so we can see it tracks a vehicle. Only thing to note is as I mentioned, it doesn't track very fast. There we are.
I'm in the Jeep waving. Put it in park.
Let's go get this guy. Spin it around.
And we'll do a typical hand landing.
Coming down nicely.
And there we go. Let's go to our next little adventure. Now, I'm going to try a different tracking test. Apparently, the new Atom 3 has the ability, unlike other drones, this is a feature that maybe this is the only drone that has it, has the ability to track you, but track you lower to the ground. The only problem is there's no obstacle avoidance on this thing, so it says when you do it, make sure the prop guards are on. I don't have prop guards. I'm going to give it a shot though. Here we go.
So, this is lower. And uh how's it doing?
It seems like it's working now. So, you have to turn on, as far as I can tell, you have to turn on propeller guard mode and low altitude mode at the same time.
And then it gives you a much lower uh from the back type of flight. You can do it from the side, too, I'm sure. So, let's uh switch over to the side. Go over to the side.
There we are. Going to do parallel.
All right. So, it should be stay low to the ground on parallel on the side.
So, let's just try that.
So, there we go. So, that looks better.
That's That's kind of what you want when you're out filming because then you can talk. Obviously, it should be on the other side cuz that's where I'd be facing. Oh, it's coming to the front as I'm going around. So, so much for parallel, now it's in the front of me.
Uh but that's pretty cool. I have to watch what's in the back of it though.
So, you see how it's getting close to those trees? I'm going to pull it this way.
Yeah, it can crash easy. It's got no no ability to not crash.
But, there we go. At least it's on the side I want and it's on this side where I can talk to it and the sun's back there, so this will be better.
But, yeah.
So, if you were out riding a bike, walking, running, you can have it track you low to the ground over there, and it should look pretty cool. It should have looked better than some other uh drones on the market because they don't all do this. So, I'm turning it again. I'm going to try to do a big turn to see what happens.
What's it do? Does it get behind me?
Go on the side.
It's in behind me, and we're coming back over here.
Now, we're coming over to Joe. We're going to drive right by his his helicopter.
There we are. All right.
So this drone Joe has no obstacle avoidance.
So if I walk this way and it's coming at you, you would have to You'll have to move.
Oh yeah, it does have you. Or obviously the tracking has switched to Joe. It doesn't have the AI tracking that knows it's only me and not Joe. So try this Joe. I'm going to walk right here. Stand in front of you.
Okay. Now I need Uh let's see if it I'm just going to see if it follows me now.
Yeah. So it's got me now. So there we go.
Yeah, so it just swaps one for one. All right. Next thing I want to show you with tracking is the point of interest.
Now I don't know if point of interest works low to the ground cuz most point of interests work up in the air, but this does have low altitude tracking. So let's try it. So I'm going to stand up.
And then I'm going to bring the camera up cuz the camera can look up. There it is. It's looking at me. Now I will select myself.
And I do want AI track, but I want point of interest. On here they call it spotlight. So I'll just make sure that one's selected. So that's good. So that means if I move the drone should follow me. And it does.
And it actually works low to the ground.
So that's a bonus. Okay, I didn't think it would work. I thought it would pop up in the air. So let's see how low I can make it. It It might want to crash or land on the ground. Let's see. I have a camera over there. I'm bringing it down.
How low can you go without it landing?
It's going down. Going down. Oh oh, the point of interest just went up. Off. Let me try again.
I've got it pretty low this time. Can I even select myself? No.
I'm at.5 m as it says on the bottom of my screen and it will not let me Oh, it did let me select myself. Oh, here Here again.
Low altitude tracking. So, 0.5 m, can you get me?
>> [laughter] >> I guess it works.
So, that's pretty cool.
So, that means you could do some pretty neat things. In other words, if I was doing some activity or something where I was moving around at low altitude, let me just go back here. The drone can follow me, it will just track me, but it can't follow as in moving follow.
But, it will catch me moving along the ground, which is pretty cool because this is from a low altitude. And if I come back to it right at it, could almost jump over it, but I'm not going to. There we go. Also, if the camera's pointing away up and you want it to go level automatically, just press your C1 button on your remote, and it should pop down to level. There we go.
Perfect. So, no matter how you have that gimbal, if I was looking down and I wanted to come back forward really fast, just press C1, and she pops back to level. All right, the Potensic Atom 3 is filming me, and I'm going to answer the question a lot of you have, is there obstacle avoidance on the Potensic Atom 3 when it's tracking you? In other words, if I'm walking around a tree, will this go around a tree? It might go around, or it might crash because if it goes around, it might crash into something else.
Anyways, let me show you really quick.
Put a square around me. I'm going to say follow. Let me grab my coffee. I just stopped for a coffee.
Uh don't really need to look at this, but here we go.
So, it's tracking me. This is my Jeep.
To walk out this way.
Should follow me.
Don't want to crash into that car, but it's nice and low to the ground. Let's go over this way.
We're going to make it a little bit harder.
So, here I am going through two trees.
That's nicely done. Now, let me walk over this way. Little confusing.
Let's see, is it going to hit anything?
I'm going down this skinny pathway.
Oh, is it going into that Oh, draw box around myself again. I'll say follow.
And go. It's pretty windy here. And I'm going to stare at it this time so it has my face.
Let's see if it follows me back between these two houses or does it smash >> [laughter] >> smash into a house?
>> [gasps] >> Well, I think that answers the question.
It's down there.
All right, little guy. Let me just pick him up here. He he doesn't look that good. But so that that answers the question. It cannot track you and miss objects. All right, just so you know, it can take a licking and keep on ticking.
Here we go.
Start the motors and take off.
Don't hit my coffee. There we go.
She's up. All right, I've got it back on tracking but I have to look for where Oh, here's my coffee here. Does it follow all over the place? All right. So it should still have Get away from me.
Okay, I've got my coffee. I'm going to walk backwards and we'll watch it crash together because it's got to get between my Jeep and well, where is it coming? Is going to hit my Jeep? Let's go all the way back here.
Oh, it made it through. Good. I would say it's a little dangerous. I wouldn't trust it.
You know, if you move around, it's okay for tracking you.
I've got it tracking low to the ground but uh I really would not trust this thing with obstacles around. Make sure you're in a wide open space if you have it tracking low. If not, put it up in the air. All right, so that was the tracking on the Potensic Atom 3. What did you think?
Good or bad? Do you like it? Do you not like it? You know, let me know in the comments below what you think. I think it's all right. I think it does what it's supposed to do but it's definitely not a DJI drone with obstacle avoidance while it's tracking. But for now, I say check out the links below. See if it's something you would like to get for yourself. The links are below and you can see the price for the versions that are available. And if you have questions on this product, post them below. I'll make some more [music] videos coming up in the future but for now, I say thanks for watching and I'll catch you in another video soon. Till then, I say bye.
