GenZ Kid With No Experience Installs A Metal Roof On His DIY Shed

[00:00:01]Well, it's Saturday morning. Sun's already blasting and I've got zero obligations or plans this weekend besides the shed. Let me show you what I got done over the last week working nights after work. So, when I left off on the last video, I had just put up this one bottom piece of sophet and then I kind of got rained out. So, let's take a look. Ever since I got this thing closed in, I'm always kind of scared stepping in here at first. I'm afraid there's going to be like a raccoon in here or something or a skunk. Imagine that. So, you can see here we have the sophet on this side and the fascia board. We've got sophet and fascia on this side. And I put one piece of trim on there just to kind of I kind of wanted to make sure it was going to close this gap up when I put that on there. And it does. So, I'm going to wait for the rest of them though cuz I really want to preaint those before I hang them up. That really improves the look of the building having that closed off covered with the siding. Then the last thing, this is what I did yesterday afternoon.

[00:01:08]All of my furring strips for the metal roof are down. Oh, and I got all the seams taped. I I didn't have that done in the last video. Taped all the seams and sealed all of every nail head.

[00:01:22]This thing's gotten rained on several times since I did that. 0% water getting in just with this. So, once it's got the metal roof on top of it, also should be perfect. So, if you don't know, this zip system is an approved roof underllayment for metal roofing. It's just recommended that you do these furring strips because that allows cond if any condensation builds up on the bottom side of it, that allows a little bit of air flow to get underneath it. keep this all dry on the bottom as well. I actually didn't know about that, but you know, when I researched it a little bit, it totally makes sense. When the morning sun comes up and the metal's kind of cool, the shaded bottom side can build up some condensation on the bottom when the sun hits the top and it starts to heat it up. And if it's just tight to the structure, that moisture will just over time seep into your roof sheathing. But these are treated. These are actually just deck boards. um that I ripped in half and nailed to every rafter. So, I'm thinking plan for today is metal roof. I do have one more side to put my sophet and fascia on right here, but I've got two of my friends coming over and I've been dreaming of having help hanging all these 16 ft long, super flimsy set and fascia boards. So, I'm waiting till they get here to put that on. I think they're coming around noonish. So, I got some stuff I can do until then. Oh, and by the way, not a sponsored product or anything, but a product that I finally decided to get and has been lifechanging for me. I don't know if you guys have ever seen these before. [00:03:28]Man, this has been making I've had this thing for 3 days now. I've used it all day every all three days. It makes so much difference. For one, that air flow just keeps you a lot cooler. Two, it keeps my shirt from getting soaking wet.

[00:03:41]It's got I don't even keep it on the highest setting and it lasts all day easily. It go I got think yesterday I used it all day at work then all afternoon after work and I think it went from 85% battery to like 40% battery and that was on I think two settings down from the highest or no all when I got home I had it two settings down from the highest all day at work and then when I got home I was putting it I put it on the highest setting just cuz I knew if it died I could plug it in and it also works as a flashlight. I don't know how well you can see that. Surprisingly bright flashlight. I don't expect to use that function. Then you can open it up and it's also a portable charger. I might actually put it on the highest setting for today just because I know it's going to be so hot. Anyway, I'm going to I've never tried like linking a product or anything. So, I'll look into it if I'm able to. I'll link this in the description and maybe the comment or something. Like I said, this isn't like a product that got sent or something.

[00:04:48]I'm not someone who I just like I said, it's just a product I tried out and it's been working so well for me that I wanted to share it in case it would help any of you guys cuz I know I posted that poll. I think that was weekend before last I made that poll on my or I was a just a question I asked on my community page about if you guys would rather work in extreme heat or extreme cold and basically everybody I think I only had like two people I had like 150 comments.

[00:05:12]I'm pretty sure only two people said they preferred cold over heat. So everyone else suffers like I do. I definitely recommend it. I don't know how well how long it's going to hold up.

[00:05:20]I've only had it for 3 days, but I'd buy another one if this one tore up. All right, so I think I might try something new this video.

[00:05:30]So, I got this neck mount for my camera for my second channel. If you're not aware, I've mentioned it maybe twice, but I have a backup channel now. I'll link that video, that channel also. It's called Big Cool, Strong Tough Guy. It's basically just like a vlog channel backup. I got this for that channel, but when I'm working on the roof, it's hard to get video up there because I'm really just kind of scared to set my tripod up and then accidentally knock it over and knock my camera completely off the roof.

[00:06:00]So, I was thinking this might be a good idea for getting some video up on the roof. I don't know. I'll see what you guys think about it. This also gives you a little bit more of an up close look at, you know, what I'm doing. Um, my camera is usually so far away you can't hardly see.

[00:06:24]Man, I should have grabbed my sunglasses out of the Jeep a second ago.

[00:06:29]Okay, so this is my I believe it's the eve drip is the name. This goes on the low part of the roof underneath the metal roofing. So, the met the actual roofing will sit on top of it. I am going to cut a/2 inch off the top and then just cut in a half inch on the bottom here so that I can bend this around so that it wraps. So it'll be that corner right there. It'll wrap around to this rake side and then I can cap over it with my rake flashing.

[00:07:11]If you're curious, this is the first time I've done this. I've never done anything with metal roofing before. So, but this is actually the most familiar feeling part of this because I work with brake metal at work all the time. So, the flashing stuff comes a little bit naturally to me or at least it's a familiar process. But the rest of this, yeah, I definitely have been researching and trying to learn the best techniques and I probably still don't know the best techniques.

[00:07:53]I have my back my the Jeep. So, I have all my work tools. Just about to say I wish I had brought my duck bills home.

[00:08:09]That's what I told myself I was going to bring these home and then I never thought about it again. And then I fortunately made the decision to drive this thing home.

[00:08:23]I just nailed my 2x12 cut off. I had that left over from the stringers.

[00:08:26]Nailed that down right there. Should have done that a long time ago. Yeah. So now can actually bend this almost kind of like almost kind of like it's a break. I'll have to rebend that drip because I need to grab it low enough that I can.

[00:08:44]I can just grab this and bend that back up.

[00:08:50]I don't actually know if that drip even really needs to be on there.

[00:08:55]So, I made a mark here at 3 in almost 3 ft. Now, if I taper this down like this, when I put this piece on, I should be able to slide it over to where they're, you know, actually kind of intertwined or interconnected instead of just overlapping.

[00:09:16]Yeah. So, I can put this piece up now and then I can get a cut length on this one. Cut this one down. Bend the left side and then I can kind of open up this hem a little bit on the bottom. I can't really show you yet. And then we can actually lock those in together. I just need to get this up on the roof without it without something happening to it.

[00:11:00]Now I got a couple of nails I need to hammer down. That was why I brought this up here. This nail gun, another problem with it is it randomly will shoot two nails and the second one always doesn't drive all the way in.

[00:17:47]It's got a 1/4, 5/16, 38, 7/16, 1/2 in, and 9/16 um hex nut driver allin one. And it's on a shaft that you can put in an impact.

[00:18:00]Oh, they're quarter. Well, are they quarter? Yeah, they're quarter. Okay.

[00:18:03]But yeah, if it wasn't I mean you can you take this off, flip it around. Now you've got a 5/16 and then you can just pull these off the back and move them to the front. Yeah, that is a quarter. I was expecting it to be at least 5/16.

[00:18:20]Clutch this down to like what do you think? Nine. Oh no, that's probably too strong. Five. Uh seven. That feels pretty good. We will check and adjust as we go.

[00:18:33]And I hope I don't drop this bag of screws climbing up here. That would be a disaster. Hope this doesn't crease as I pull it up here.

[00:19:01]Definitely think I'm going to have to pre-drill a lot of these cuz these are not punching through as well as I hoped they would.

[00:19:12]Now I need to go up there and make sure I'm hopefully pretty square on that edge.

[00:19:28]So about 212 and 3/4 to the edge 212 3/4. All right, let's do a little swap here. Take this out of the dig drill.

[00:19:44]Then I can put that in my five in one cuz this Oh, this actually isn't an impact. So I can clutch it down.

[00:19:54]Start off at like nine and then I can put a pilot bit in here. Now I can start piloting some of these holes. So every ridge and then in every pearl and every this is these are spaced out every 24 inches. Hopefully they gave me enough screws for that. And I'm going to use this to make sure I'm staying square.

[00:20:16]And there's going to be a lot of screws put in this.

[00:20:20]How many is this? 250. Hopefully that's enough.

[00:20:42]I guess I'll actually I can leave that end cuz I can pin it whenever I put the ridge or the rake flashing on. And this will make make you really glad the roof isn't dark cuz this isn't really very hot at all. And it would be, man, it would be if it was black or dark gray.

[00:21:06]The reason you do your screws in the high spots might be self-explanatory, but that puts it obviously when the water is flowing off, it's going to be down here. So you don't have to worry about water, you know, hitting your screws, which these do have the rubber grommet washer to seal up, but it's still good practice based on the research I've done. I'm not a roofer, to screw it in the high spot. That's what my supplier told me that came off their website when I ordered the metal. They said this specific type screws in the highs.

[00:21:48]Man, this fan is keeping me alive [clears throat] right now. I've always thought roofing and road construction looked like the worst jobs to do in peak summer, and now here I am roofing in peak summer.

[00:22:03]I'm liking how this is going so far, though. And it should, I think, just get easier after the first sheet, which this one wasn't wasn't even hard. Just getting it squared up in the beginning.

[00:22:26]I don't know if I explained that a second ago, but I clutched my drill down. That way, I can't overtighten the screws. That's what you're hearing when I'm tightening it down where it sounds like it doesn't have enough power. It's a clutch that stops it right when the screw is tight enough that that rubber washer gets tight.

[00:22:58]Only thing that's not comfortable is I'm sitting right on the screw heads.

[00:23:33]All right. So, this is a step I see some people do and I see some people not do, so I don't really know how crucial it is, but I reckoned I would do it. And that is applying tape on this edge to make it a little bit more waterproof.

[00:23:47]And it's already doing the classic tape thing where it all tries to fall off the paper.

[00:24:06]Fortunately, being a glass guy, I'm familiar with that thing. That happening doesn't doesn't make it less annoying, though.

[00:24:22]I'll leave the paper on there till I get the next sheet on. Then hopefully I can lift it up and pull the paper out. That way it's not sticking while I'm trying to slide it all into position. I guess we're ready for the next one. All right, just went and cooled off from the house for a minute.

You can make a little bit of adjustment with these by kind of pushing or pulling, stretching, or compressing these panels. Since they're corrugated, you can kind of just make those highs taller or shorter if you need to, but I still would like to keep it as close to right as we can.

[00:28:40]I was looking last night and this company I bought all this metal roofing from sells the same profile or they have this color called Hawaiian blue. See if I can show it. How do you guys think that would look on the house? Imagine I paint the house white with trim that's the same color as that Hawaiian blue on all the corners and around all the windows and stuff and then I have that blue roof.

[00:29:05]get some opinions because I kind of think I told uh everyone on the vlogging channel yesterday, but I think the roof is probably going to be next on my house cuz it's just so old.

[00:29:18]And since a lot of the house doesn't have an attic, I can't actually check and see if it's leaking anywhere until it's leaked so much that it soaks all the way through the sheetrock and everything. And I was thinking I know it's leaking around at least two vents, but those are in rooms I haven't remodeled yet.

[00:29:37]It only leaks in like really really heavy rain.

[00:29:40]I sealed around them once and I think it stopped it. It's hard to tell though. So honestly, the house just needs a new roof. I was thinking that would probably be smarter to do that before I go into [snorts] remodeling more rooms after this is done.

[00:30:01]So, I got to decide on a color. And honestly, the material for this was not as expensive as I was expecting.

[00:30:12]I would have to strip all the shingles cuz it's got either two or three layers already. So, you can't go on top of it, unfortunately. That's a shame, too, cuz that's a really easy way to put a metal roof on. Just do the furring strips over the shingles.

[00:40:30]So, nothing we can do besides get started on that. if the camera is kind of foggy. It's um because of the temperature change, how cold it is in the house versus how hot it is out here.

[00:41:00]Really hope these are long enough because I believe that they are exactly 12 ft. Oh no, they're longer. Never mind. I was worried that they were going to be too short because my roof is exactly 144 from the edge of this fascia to the edge of this fascia. And then we added a little bit of overhang in the back with the metal. And then we also have these angles that have to be cut on each end. So if it was a square 144, it was going to be too short. But it's like one, what was that? 150 or something.

[00:41:28]Walking away from what I need right here. Oh, look. I wrote my name on that one. So, my hope is that that will sit there without falling down. That metal's so thin. If it fell, it would definitely get creased and bent. Here it is. I don't know if you guys have seen it all completely done. I can't remember if I was recording. We put our last piece on yesterday. I don't think I was. I think this is pretty simple, really.

On this one, even though I sealed that, I obviously I would like to prevent water from being able to get to it. So, tape across the part of this where it attaches to the roof. do everything we can to shield that seam from getting any water on it.

[00:45:19]Cut that off and then cut up here. And then I'll bend this over. And then my ridge flashing will cap all that. And I can just cut that square. And it should since this will be folded under here.

I mean it doesn't matter what color anything is in this kind of heat. It's going to get crazy hot. I mean just the wood with the wood sheathing before I had the roof on was so hot. I'm in my grinder right now. It's burning me through my gloves.

[00:46:53]kind of need to shoot a nail in that to get it to hold that that bend. I don't want to use one of these cuz I don't want that big hex head poking up through or, you know, pushing my flashing my ridge cap out. All right, same thing on the other side.

[00:49:05]So, I know there's plenty of people that can, but I just know that I can't do a cut that straight. with a pair of snips. That's why I don't use snips that much. Just got to bend this hymn open a little bit.

[00:49:50]I cut this piece to fit butted up. So, I didn't account for all that overlap that I cut out right here.

[00:49:59]So, now this one is 2 in too short. So, I'm going to have to have a small splice cuz I'm not going to get an entire new piece of metal just for that.

[00:50:12]Go get that piece I just threw off the roof. Oh, I can't believe I did that. Of course, on the side, I'm going to always see too right here on the driveway. All right. Hopefully, this thing doesn't get messed up when I threw it off the roof.

[00:50:44]So, I think what I'll do is I'll bend the hem open on this. I'll slide it onto that piece that I tapered and then get a new cut length. I'll cut this where this is damaged off and then taper this end and then just slide that piece I have up on the roof on there, too. Man, it's annoying to think that I would be done right now if I hadn't done that. I guess I'll just leave this as long as I can. I feel like a longer splice piece looks a little bit less weird than a smaller one. So, it looks like it's damaged up to right here.

[00:51:25]Man, this cuts a lot slower than the Diablo disc does. It is kind of thicker.

[00:53:27]Well, besides cutting the ends off my ridges or rakes, but I'm not doing that today. I have felt like I'm about to die from the heat like five different times today. So, that's it. Um, not crazy about how this looks up here, but I by leaning over the edge and looking at it, I think it'll look okay from the ground.

[00:53:46]I haven't been down there. Oh, man. That dog just scared me so bad. I saw that out of the corner. I saw it in the corner of the camera before I saw it in the corner of my eye. Just the neighbor's Yorkie. Um, yeah, I'm happy with it. I'm real happy with it. That was honestly easier than I expected it to be. I was one of the easier, well, mentally easier parts of the job physically. It has sucked just because of the no shade directly in the sun aspect. Wrong time of year for it. Yeah.

[00:54:21]Yeah. So, I definitely think I'm going to have to get some more screws. I'm pretty much out. I think I'm going to have to go through like every two feet or something and put a screw in the face of a lot of this metal cuz it's not the bend.

[00:54:33]It's not sitting flat against the fascia. Plus, I'm kind of worried about that. I was thinking with how low that hangs down all the way around, that would probably that could catch some heavy wind and bend up. So, but I don't have enough screws for it. So that might be something I I do later. I also I probably need to snip that little overhang off this rake end. You can definitely see the splice. I wish or the you know the extra piece that's p that's pieced in in the middle. I wish that hadn't happened, but nothing I can do about it now. I like it a lot. Should be a robust roof. I just got to get my uh roof my exhaust fan. I just got to put my exhaust fan in before I put the doors on so it doesn't get insanely hot in there. Then we put the doors on and actually have it totally dried in. It's going well. Like every other project, you do not realize how many steps there are in the process till you're doing all of them mostly by yourself. I think that's enough for this weekend. Hope you guys liked it.
