This Robot Mower Finally Solves the Biggest Problem With Robot Mowers: ECOVACS GOAT A3000 LiDAR PRO

[00:00:08]That's pretty good. [music] [music] So, last year when robot lawnmowers really started to get popular, there was one major complaint I kept hearing over and over again, which was, "Cool tech, [music] but this thing doesn't take care of the edges." I still have to do the edges.

[00:00:31]And I have to agree with them. Most modern robot lawnmowers are decent at maintaining the middle of your lawn, but the edges, the corners, you still have to drag out the weed whacker. But [music] Eovax listened because the new Eovax Goat A3000 Lar Pro might be one of the biggest attempts to fix the robot edge problem we've seen in the robot lawn mower space. And after spending a few months with it, this thing feels a lot closer to the dream of true handsfree lawn care. So today, I'm going to show you what's actually new with this device, what's improved over last year's model, and whether this thing is finally good enough to replace mowing your lawn entirely. I'm gonna also share with you how this lawn mower is going to help me keep my grass greener and healthier through these drought water restriction conditions that we have here in Colorado this summer. So, let's talk about the unboxing and the assembly first. The goat is nicely packaged and the unboxing experience feels premium and I don't know why, but unveiling that lidar orb on the top of the mower is always one of my favorite parts. Just like last year's model, this thing looks high-end. The lawn mower comes with everything you need to get started.

[00:01:45]There's a little more assembly needed compared to last year's model, but it's all very straightforward. At first glance, the new EVAX Go A3000 Lar Pro looks identical compared to last year's mower. Once you install that brush that protrudes from the side, you'll realize that this thing is going to be something special. Last year's generation already had impressive LAR navigation, but this new model has what EVAX calls their Holoscope 360 system, which combines dual LAR sensors with AI obstacle avoidance and advanced 3D lawn mapping.

[00:02:20]And in real world use, it's good with a few caveats, and we'll talk about that shortly. One of the biggest pain points with these older robot mowers from the past was the setup. You'll spend forever finding the right place for RTK antennas, connecting to satellites, working with getting weak GPS signals through trees and different structures in yard. This mower skips a lot of the headache. There's no perimeter [music] wire, no extra antenna to battle for signal. You map your yard in the app and the mower handles the rest. The obstacle avoidance is great. I've watched this little thing. Avoid patio furniture, landscaping, toys, trees, random stuff in the yard, people like me, my dog.

[00:03:07]Oh, you guys are supposed to stay in one place. And unlike some robot mowers that panic [music] when they encounter an obstacle, this one just feels and looks confident. That confidence also helps the mow quality look great. The A3000 Lar Pro has a wider 13-in cutting width, [music] dual discs, and a more powerful 32vt system designed to [music] cover up to 3/4 of an acre. And Eovax claims it can mow up to 400 square meters per hour with efficiency improvements around 30% to more traditional robot mowing patterns. One thing that means is it moves fast. Right now, I have it on its slowest setting, which is what I prefer, just slow and steady. But on the fastest setting, it moves. And that's one thing that's really noticeable compared to older models. This thing moves. And every move feels very intentional. With improvements over previous models, the cutting performance, the blade speed, it's just all increased [music] around 3,000 RPMs, which Eovac says is about 33% faster than earlier goat models. And you can actually notice it when it's cutting the thicker grass. And we're going to show that here. I've let this part grow out a little bit thicker so that we'll be able to show it for our tests. You can also electronically adjust the cutting height right from the app. Anywhere from roughly a half an inch up to 3 and 1/2 in. And I love this. And in drought conditions, I'm keeping this high, so it's around 3.1 to 3.5 in. I love last year's EVAX enough to keep it as my main mower for my front yard throughout the year. The new Goat mower cuts even better. But let's talk about the feature that everyone's asking about, and that is the edge trimming.

[00:04:50]Because this is the big upgrade the Go A3000 Lar Pro now includes an actual built-in edge trimmer they call true edge. This is a huge deal because historically edge trimming has been the Achilles heel of most robot mowers. Most mowers physically can't get close enough to fences, curbs, or landscaping because the blades just sit too far underneath the body. So, even if your mower handled 95% of your lawn, you still had ugly perimeter edges. This new side trimming system gets way closer. And while it's not absolutely perfect in every single scenario, it seems to be improving over time, and it's dramatically better than what we've [music] seen before.

[00:05:36]pretty good all along here, but then it misses this.

[00:05:44]You won't get all the edges, but this is one of the first robots where I finished a mowing cycle and instead of having to trim a thick band of uncut edges, I mostly only needed to trim spots, areas where the goat missed. And that alone is massive. The goat is very customizable.

[00:06:03]You can create different mowing zones with different cut patterns, different heights, all with the app. So, if you want your backyard taller, for example, but you want your front yard looking shorter, more like a golf course, you can actually do that. One thing I've actually started doing differently during these hotter drought conditions is cutting my grass way more frequently, but leaving it taller. And at first thought it kind of sounds backwards because most people think shorter grass means less maintenance, less water. But it's actually the opposite. When you cut your grass super short, the sun hits the soil, directly heats it up even more, which causes evaporation of the moisture. So basically, your lawn dries out quicker when the grass is shorter.

[00:06:47]But taller grass acts like natural shade. It keeps the soil cooler, helps trap that moisture, and reduces how much water evaporates during the day. And the real important part is what happens underground. Taller grass tends to grow deeper roots. Deeper roots can reach water farther down in the soil, which makes the lawn more drought resistant and less dependent on constant watering.

[00:07:09]And so, instead of scalping the lawn once in a while and cutting a lot off the top, I've actually found it better to let the grass grow a little bit longer and mow it more frequently. only taking a little bit off the top each time while keeping the grass relatively tall. The lawn stays healthier, greener, and requires less water overall in these drought conditions. And weirdly enough, the robot mower setup is kind of perfect for this approach because instead of doing one aggressive cut every week, it's maintaining the lawn constantly with small cuts daily or every other day, which is actually healthier for the grass long term. Let's talk about the app. The app itself is also significantly more polished than a lot of competitors. You can split zones, merge zones, customize mowing speed, obstacle sensitivity, set schedules, cutting heights. Really easy to use, even remotely. The mower has a built-in camera system. This is where Eovac experience in the robot mower, the vacuum world really shows. The software matters because even with the best hardware, that becomes frustrating if the app experience is bad. And the app experience for this EVAX is really good.

[00:08:21]Now, let's talk about charging and battery life. On this new version, EVAX upgraded the battery. So, now you're looking at about 160 minutes of run time on a full charge. Charging only takes around 70 minutes from zero to full. And in terms [music] of coverage, Eovac says this thing can handle roughly 8,600 square ft on a single charge. That means this thing can [music] cover a surprising amount of ground before needing to head back and recharge. Now, is it perfect? No. Here's some feedback for EVAX. Driving the Eovax during self-mapping, it's a little twitchy and sometimes difficult to navigate, especially on turns. If your yard is extremely rough, full of holes, large sticks, exposed roots, or very uneven terrain, you may still run into occasional issues because it is not an all-wheel drive device. So, it's already mowed this section and see the lines where it came through. I'm not sure why it's avoiding this area. Hallucination or maybe there was something there in the past that it got used to bumping up against that's no longer there. And I don't know. I asked Eovax why the mower seemed to skip this section, and it turns out the grass was right around the mower's obstacle detection limit height of about 10 cm. Because the obstacle avoidance system is very sensitive, it initially treated the taller grass as a possible obstacle and avoided it. Eovax says the A3000 Pro is designed as a maintenance mower. So, if your lawn is overgrown sections, it's best to cut those down first and then let the goat handle the ongoing maintenance from there. Another option for longer grass patches is to put the Eovax in the manual mode and control the mower like an RC car. Once the grass is nicely trimmed, the mower will have no problems going forward. And finally, the trimmer is loud.

[00:10:08]It is pretty darn loud. Robot mowers are known for being quiet, but when that trimmer activates, the neighbors are going to know. And like most lawnmowers, your lawn quality actually matters. The nicer and more maintained your yard is, the better these systems perform. But compared to where robot mowers were even two years ago, this is a huge leap forward. It helps solve one of the biggest problems remaining with robot lawnmowers, and that is edge trimming, and that's what makes this mower feel different. This one feels much closer to replacement level automation. Since using robot mowers, I haven't touched my push mower, and with this, I won't have to trim nearly as much as with the other robot mowers. That is crazy to think about. The Eovax A3000 Lar Pro is an amazing piece of engineering. It shows what humans can do and what they can make using robotics to solve problems.

[00:11:01]Just a few years ago, robot mowers were cumbersome and they needed boundary wires and they bounced around randomly when they're mowing like an old window screen saver. Now you have the goat, which uses lidar, AI vision, and has very capable trimming abilities.
