But for every 70 people who need one, only one donor cornea is available. Researchers at POSTECH in South Korea developed a bio-ink made from real corneal tissue and stem cells.

That's what aligns the collagen fibrils to make it clear, not cloudy. The result is a biocompatible implant that matches how a real cornea is built. And in late 2025, a separate team completed the world's first successful human implant of a fully lab-grown 3D printed cornea, restoring sight to a blind patient.
