I Ordered Orchids from Windy Hill Gardens for the First Time!

[00:00:00]Let's start with this big box here from Windy Hill Gardens.

[00:00:07]This is a group order for my local orchid society.

[00:00:11]So, I thought I would show you as I unpack all of these.

[00:00:16]Now, [snorts] in this group order, there is a lot of Bulbophyllums.

[00:00:23]Now, I'm not saying that's what this plant is.

[00:00:28]>> [snorts] >> Ooh.

[00:00:31]Aha.

[00:00:33]So, this is a Barkeria. This is Barkeria Brian's Barkers.

[00:00:41]Look at all that. This is phenomenal.

[00:00:44]Lots of new growth on this.

[00:00:47]I think the person that's going to get this Barkeria is going to be very happy with this.

[00:00:54]Reminds me, it kind of looks like it was a keiki.

[00:00:59]It has bloomed before. Look at that.

[00:01:02]Got a bloom spike there, and a bloom spike here, and this is the newest growth. Lots of new root tips.

[00:01:18]And here's a Bulbophyllum.

[00:01:24]And this is Bulbophyllum, yeah, right.

[00:01:29]It's from tropical Africa.

[00:01:33]Oh, let me see if I can try to pronounce it.

[00:01:37]Gaber berina? Nope. Not going to be I've never heard of this one before.

[00:01:44]Never heard of it, and I'll tell you what, I'm not going to unpack it anymore.

[00:01:48]Um, I'm going to leave this tape and the little shredded tissue on here.

[00:01:54]So, that can go to the person that this belongs to, but Windy Gardens, I heard that they have really, really nice things.

[00:02:08]See what we have here. Aha. Okay.

[00:02:12]Uh I did order one of these plants. This is Maxillaria picta. Now, this is golden claw, which has an AM from the American Orchid Society.

[00:02:22]And this is a species from Brazil. One of the places that I volunteer at has a Maxillaria picta.

[00:02:32]And it is undoubtedly the best smelling orchid I have ever smelled.

[00:02:38]Little tiny small flowers.

[00:02:41]Uh they're they're uh barred, I would call them barred uh with the coloration, striped. Ooh, what do we have down here?

[00:02:50]Let's see if I can get my hands on something [snorts] else down here.

[00:02:55]I got a big leaf coming out here. Now, I just got to find the plant.

[00:03:00]>> [snorts] >> See if I can at least reach down in here and find the pot.

[00:03:08]Okay, that's another pot here. This is another Bulbophyllum.

[00:03:13]This is Bulbophyllum Sue Blackmore Windy Hill. Remember I said this is from Windy Hill Gardens?

[00:03:27]Ooh, look how tall that pseudo bulb is.

[00:03:29]One of your larger Bulbophyllums.

[00:03:32]This is Bulbophyllum falcatum crossed with I'mma put it on the bottom of the screen. That's all I got to say cuz I have I don't know my Bulbophyllums very well to even know how to pronounce this, but I'm going to say based on looking at the word purpur purpur or orchis or something like that.

[00:03:54]It's a purple orchid.

[00:03:57]Cuz that would be the Latin.

[00:03:59]Okay, so anyway, anyway, one of the members of our orchid society loves Bulbophyllum's and he definitely ordered a bunch.

[00:04:13]Oh, I got a pseudo bulb here.

[00:04:15]Let me find Here's the pot. Here's the pot. Okay, here we go.

[00:04:19]This is Okay, this is another really big Bulbophyllum and it has a new growth right here.

[00:04:30]Now, I really don't know the difference between this Bulbophyllum and the Bulbophyllum that I purchased. So, we're going to have to find it in the box here and figure this out. This is Bulbophyllum ample bracteatum Windy Hill, which has an HCC by the American Orchid Society.

[00:04:48]It is a species and ba- I I asked Marilyn, "What is the difference between the flower on this one and the flower that I got?" And she said when they're both in bloom, she can't tell the difference.

[00:05:02]They're both yellow and I had no idea how big this Bulbophyllum is. So, I'm anxious to see the one that I've got and let's see how big it is cuz I'm thinking, "Lord have mercy, where am I going to put it?"

[00:05:18]Okay. Yeah, hot air in here.

[00:05:24]Okay, this is the one that I purchased.

[00:05:27]Bulbophyllum here. So, we can look at it. Let's take this off [snorts] here.

[00:05:36]So, here is the Bulbophyllum that I got.

[00:05:40]And uh tags got roots stuck to it. So, I'm going to have to turn it around this way so you can try to read the tag.

[00:05:49]Bulbophyllum What is this now?

[00:05:52]carunculatum And this is magnifico AM AOS from American Orchid Society crossed with a sib. Now, if you look this up online, I am finding that now this is called Bulbophyllum whatever this other one was am ample break brachiadum subspecies.

[00:06:19]What is this?

[00:06:20]uh carunculatum Now, one of the differences that I am seeing is the pseudobulbs on this one well, they are close. They are kind of close.

[00:06:36]Yeah, they are kind of close. I don't know.

[00:06:39]I don't know. Anyway, lots of new growth. We have a new growth here and here and one here that's finishing up.

[00:06:48]Two good new growths on it. This one is still a new growth. See that leaf here how shiny and it's very flexible.

[00:06:57]This is this growth here is maturing. The pseudobulb has not fully formed yet, but the sheath is starting to turn brown.

[00:07:07]And you can see here on this one the sheath is not turning brown yet. So, this one is still growing.

[00:07:14]But I think the flower looks pretty cool.

[00:07:16]And from what I understand, I don't think they have a really strong odor. So, that's good.

[00:07:22]That'll be really good.

[00:07:25]Now, where am I going to put it because right now where I keep all of my Bulbophyllums uh the light is pretty low.

[00:07:34]This is Bulbophyllum ambrosia.

[00:07:39]Look at that.

[00:07:41]Mhm.

[00:07:41]Very nice. Their stuff is good. Looks all so healthy. [snorts] So nice.

[00:07:48]Now with Windy Hill Gardens, she doesn't have a website. I mean, she does have a website, but you only have the plants are just listed um by name in a list. There's no pictures.

[00:08:03]And then you can just look up the different varieties that she has.

[00:08:09]This is another Maxillaria picta golden claw AM AOS.

[00:08:15]And looks good, doesn't it?

[00:08:20]Leaves look beautiful on it. Absolutely beautiful.

[00:08:27]All right, that is all that is in this box. Now there's a second box that she sent. Like I said, this is a group order.

[00:08:34]>> [snorts] >> And there were some cattleyas that were ordered. So they were taller plants. So she said she had to put those in this box.

[00:08:49]All righty, so somebody ordered from her Aerangis luteoalba variety rhodosticta from Central Africa.

[00:09:27]Cuz I'm seeing where this is mature size, it's bloomed before.

[00:09:32]Cattleya intermedia variety alba Windy Hill a species from Paraguay, and Uruguay. This does have an AM from the American Orchid Society. And it did look like this one had bloomed.

[00:09:45]Oh, got a bloom spike right here. So, this is mature size.

[00:09:51]Lots of This is definitely bloomed before. And two new growths.

[00:09:58]Okay.

[00:10:00]And let's see here what else we have.

[00:10:18]And this is M&M Let's see. Wait a minute here. What does this say?

[00:10:23]M&M Orchids candis candissima? I don't mhm No idea. That's the cultivar name.

[00:10:32]Has a HCC from the American Orchid Society. Let's see here.

[00:10:36]Let's see if we can see anything.

[00:10:38]I don't see where this has bloomed before.

[00:10:44]Two new growths here.

[00:10:49]And came in a clay pot.

[00:11:11]Ah, nice medusa.

[00:11:14]New growth coming out right here. I got to be really careful of that.

[00:11:22]This is such a cool orchid. One of the places I volunteer at definitely has one of these. I'm not sure that we've gotten it to bloom, though.
