Added:Can a $1 sponge from your kitchen drawer really wipe the ammonia out of your tank for good? Yes, but not the way that word eliminate makes it sound. It is not a chemical that neutralizes ammonia. It is a house for the living thing that eats it. And once that thing moves in, it never stops working. 30 years keeping fish, about 15 of them behind the counter of my own shop. And the ammonia question walked through my door more than any other single problem. Ammonia, for anyone newer to this, is the toxic waste fish give off just by living and breathing. And in a new tank, it is the number one thing that burns gills and kills fish. People wanted a bottle to make it disappear. I sold plenty of those bottles. What actually made ammonia disappear for good, was never in a bottle. It was a colony of bacteria.
And one of the cheapest, biggest homes you can give that colony is a plain sponge that costs a dollar at the grocery store. I am going to show you exactly which sponge, how to set it up, and why it works. And stay to the end because there is a 30-se secondond test that tells you whether your sponge has actually taken over the ammonia job or is just sitting there wet. Here is the thing the bottle never tells you.
Ammonia in a healthy tank is not removed by a chemical. It is eaten. There is a specific kind of bacteria called nitrifying bacteria that lives on surfaces in your tank and filter and does nothing all day but consume ammonia and turn it into less harmful stuff.
That whole process is the nitrogen cycle and the colony of bacteria doing it is your BOF filter, your biological filtration, the actual engine of the tank. Cycling a tank just means growing that colony until it is big enough to eat all the ammonia your fish produce.
And those bacteria need one thing above all to grow. Surface area. Somewhere to attach and build. That is the entire secret. A plain kitchen sponge is one of the largest cheap surfaces you can buy.
All those little holes and channels give the bacteria an enormous amount of real estate in a package the size of a deck of cards. Think of it like a garden. The bacteria are the plants and surface area is the soil. A bare glass tank wall is a paved parking lot. Almost nothing can grow on it. A sponge is a plowed field with a 100 times the ground to plant in.
Give the colony more field and it grows a bigger crop. And the crop it grows is ammonia removal. Let that sit for a second. The reason your fish store sells a whole shelf of ammonia bottles is that most people never gave the bacteria a big enough place to live. So, the colony stayed small and got overwhelmed every time a few fish went in. And there is a second half to this. the bottle really does not want you thinking about. Those bacteria do not turn ammonia into nothing. They turn it into nitrite, which is still toxic. And then a second kind of bacteria turns nitrite into nitrate, which is the far less harmful end product that you remove later with water changes. This whole relay is the nitrogen cycle, and it is the same biology laid out in any aquatic biology text and every serious fish keeping reference for the last 50 years. It predates every product on the shelf. The sponge is not some new hack somebody invented for views. It is just the cheapest way to give that 50-year-old process the surface it always needed.
Now, the part that matters most, because this is where people hurt their tank instead of helping it. It has to be a plain sponge, just cellulose or plain foam. Nothing else. no soap already in it, no antibacterial coating, no scented anything, and not the rough green scrubby layer, which is often treated with chemicals meant to kill bacteria, which is the exact opposite of what you want. A sponge that says antibacterial on the label, will do nothing but leech compounds designed to prevent the very colony you are trying to grow. Get the cheapest, plainest, undyed sponge in the store, the kind that is just a yellow block for a dollar, and rinse it hard under running water first to clear any manufacturing residue. A guy on the hobby forums posted his ammonia log after doing exactly this on a struggling 20-gallon tank. He went from ammonia up around one part per million, which on an API test is that ugly green that means real trouble, down to a flat water clear zero within about a month of adding cut sponge to his filter. and he never touched an ammonia bottle again. His numbers, not mine, and one tank proves nothing on its own. But it lines up with what I watched happen behind my counter for 15 years. That plain block is the whole trick. Cut it to fit inside your filter. Wherever the water flows through, and you have just added a massive bacteria bed for pocket change, cut it a little on the loose side, actually, not jam so tight it blocks the flow. Because if you choke the water down to a trickle, the bacteria deep in the sponge starve for oxygen, and the flow backs up over the top of your filter, snug enough to stay put, open enough to let water pour through. That balance is the one thing people get wrong when they first try this. They stuff the filter box solid, and then wonder why the flow died. I had a customer years ago who could not keep a tank stable to save his life. Kept coming in for ammonia bottles every single week. Turned out his wife had been tossing an antibacterial sponge in the filter because she read online that a sponge helps and it was quietly poisoning his colony the whole time. We swapped it for a plain dollar sponge and he never bought another bottle. He looked at me like I had been hiding it from him. Fair enough. I probably should have asked which sponge sooner.

If you run a hang-on back filter, which is that box that hangs on the rim and trickles water back in, most people call it a hob, you cut the sponge to sit right in the flow where those flimsy carbon cartridges usually go. You do not even need the cartridge. That is worth stopping on because the store sells you replacement carbon cartridges every month like clockwork. And on most tanks, that carbon is doing almost nothing after the first week. It is exhausted and just taking up space where a bacteria sponge should be. Every one of those cartridges you toss in the trash was also throwing out the bacteria colony living on it, which is a big reason people who religiously replace cartridges keep getting little ammonia spikes they cannot explain. Swap the disposable cartridge for a cut sponge you never throw away, and you stop paying a monthly tax to accidentally kill your own filter. If you run a canister filter, the sealed bucket of media that sits under the tank, you pack cut sponge into the media trays. And the simplest option of all, you can wedge a sponge over the intake tube, the pipe that sucks water into the filter, so every drop passes through it on the way in. Cut it a little oversized so it wedges in snug. About the size of a bar of soap for a small tank, bigger for a large one. The more sponge in the flow, the more bacteria you can grow and the more ammonia gets eaten every hour.
There is a fourth setup worth knowing and it is my favorite for a small or a hospital tank. The sponge filter. That is just a sponge on a tube with an air pump bubbling through it. the cheapest filter in the hobby, 10 bucks or so, and it is nothing but a big sponge growing bacteria while air pulls water through it. I will pick a simple sponge filter over a fancy canister for a fry tank any day. And I do not care what the unboxing channels say because the whole job of a filter on a small tank is exactly this.
Hold bacteria in the flow. A sponge the size of a fist on a 10-gon tank, which holds about as much water as a large bucket and a half, will out eat any bottle you can pour in. You have probably lived this next part. You set up a new tank. The fish look fine for a few days. Then one starts hanging near the surface, gasping, and you test and the ammonia is off the chart. So, you drive to the store, they hand you a bottle of ammonia remover, you dose it, the number drops for a day, and then it climbs right back because that bottle bound the ammonia temporarily. It did not eat it, and there was still nothing living in your filter to keep up. You know that fish store trip, you bring a water sample in, they dip a strip, frown at it, hand you a couple bottles and a number to hit, and you drive home and dose everything, hoping this is the time it holds. Two weeks later, you are back with another sample and the same frown.
It is not that they are lying to you exactly. Your ammonia really is high. It is that the answer on the shelf treats the symptom and never once mentions the free biology that would end it. Add up that treadmill. A bottle of ammonia remover is 10 or 12. You are buying one every week or two during a new tank, plus the fish you keep replacing at a few bucks each. And after a couple months, you are 60 or $80 $100 in and the tank still is not stable. A $1 sponge and four weeks of patience would have ended it because the sponge grows a colony that handles the ammonia forever at no ongoing cost. Think about that number. $100 in bottles and dead fish over a problem a dollar and a month of leaving the tank alone would have solved. And I know that sounds too cheap to actually work. Hear me out and test your own water before and after. Let the numbers tell you instead of me. That is the whole point of owning a test kit. So you stop trusting anyone's word, mine included, and start reading your own tank. The number does not have an opinion and it is not trying to sell you anything, which is more than you can say for most of the advice you will get standing at a fish counter. Let me show you how you make it work faster. And I will be honest, it took me an embarrassing number of years to start telling customers this plainly. A brand new sponge is sterile. The bacteria are not there yet. They have to move in and multiply, and that takes time. Usually somewhere around 3 to 6 weeks from scratch. But you can cheat the clock. If you know anyone with an established tank, ask for a used filter sponge or a scoop of their old filter gunk and tuck it against your new sponge. You are seeding it. transplanting a starter colony of live bacteria straight onto your new surface and it can cut cycling time roughly in half. Across the tanks in my fish room, a seated sponge has taken a new filter from ammonia eating in a few days instead of a month, though I will not pretend that is a controlled study. Your mileage depends on how healthy the donor colony was. My old mentor, the guy who taught me the nitrogen cycle at a club meeting 30 years back, used to say, "You are not keeping fish, you are keeping water."
And this is the clearest example of it.
He would hand a new keeper a squeezed out chunk of his own filter sponge like it was gold. Because to a fish keeper, it kind of is. I will admit, I do not fully understand why one donor sponge fires a tank up in 3 days and another barely moves the needle. Could be the age of the colony. could be how long it sat out of water on the drive home. But I have seen the difference enough times to always grab the freshest donor I can.
A couple of honest limits because this is where people undo all their work.
First, once that sponge is colonized, never rinse it under the tap. Tap water has chlorine in it and chlorine kills bacteria. That is its whole job in your drinking water. So, a quick rinse under the kitchen faucet can wipe out the colony you spent weeks growing and drop you right back into an ammonia spike.
Rinse it only in old tank water you pulled during a water change. Just a gentle squeeze to clear the gunk and never ring it bone dry. Second, this sponge handles ammonia. It does not fix a disease. If your fish have visible symptoms, white spots, rotting fins, fuzzy patches, that is a different problem. And dumping a sponge in will not touch it, that is a quarantine and treatment situation. And dosing medication in your main tank can actually kill this bacteria colony. So, slow down and research before you reach for a bottle there. And one plain safety note while we are elbow deep in the filter. Everything in this hobby runs on electricity sitting inches from water.
So, make sure your filter cord and air pump cord both hang in a drip loop, meaning the cord dips below the outlet so water runs off the low point instead of tracking back into the socket. And put the whole thing on a GFCI outlet, the kind with the test and reset buttons. My wife calls the fish room the swamp and has never tested a drop of water in her life. So if you are on very soft, low pH tap, the kind that comes out nearly empty like a lot of the Pacific Northwest, your colony may build a little slower and you might see the cycle drag. On hard, well-buffered tap, common across a lot of the Southwest and Midwest, the bacteria tend to establish faster because the water holds a steadier pH for them. Either way, the sponge still works. It is just a timing difference.
If you are on well water, and a lot of folks in rural areas are, test your tap first because well water can come out low on oxygen or oddly buffered, and the colony wants dissolved oxygen in the flow to breathe just like the fish do.
That is another quiet argument for a sponge in moving water rather than buried in a still corner. The current keeps oxygen moving across the bacteria so they can keep working. Aim for water moving enough that the surface has a gentle ripple, not a dead flat top.
Roughly the motion on a cup of coffee you just set down, not a rolling boil.
And here is the myth to put down. When the fish store tests your water for free, and tells you your ammonia is high, and sells you three bottles, they are reading a number to move product, not teaching you your tank. The day you understand that ammonia is a bacteria problem, not a bottle problem, you stop being a customer and start being a fish keeper. Now, the test I promised, the one that tells you whether your sponge has actually taken over the job or is just sitting there being a wet sponge.
No store volunteers this. No bottle mentions it. And it cost you nothing but a test kit you should own anyway. Once your tank has been running a few weeks with the sponge in the flow, feed the tank a little heavier for one day or add a tiny pinch of pure ammonia if you have it. Then wait 24 hours and test your ammonia and your nitrite, which is the middle step the bacteria make on the way to safe. If both read zero the next day, water clear yellow for ammonia and sky blue for nitrite on an API test. No green, no purple, your sponge is doing its job, the colony is big enough to eat a full day of waste overnight. If either one shows color, the colony is not there yet. No matter how long the tank has looked fine, and you keep feeding light and waiting, that $35 test kit just told you the truth that most people only learn by losing fish. And once that sponge passes the test, it keeps passing it month after month, growing right alongside your fish load, which is exactly why this beats any bottle you can buy. The reason this works on a 10-gon tank on your desk is the exact same reason it works on a thousandgal exhibit at a public aquarium. The bacteria do not care how big the water is, only that the surface they live on is big enough to match the waste going in. Scale the sponge to the bolo, meaning how much fish and food you have producing waste, and the biology handles the rest. A lightly stocked tank needs a fist of sponge. A heavily stocked one needs a lot more, but the math is the same. More waste in means more surface needed to grow the colony that eats it.
Get that ratio right and the ammonia problem does not come back. It just quietly stays solved while you go on with your life. The store has been selling a $2 problem as a $25 solution for as long as there have been fish tanks. Mostly because nobody makes money telling you the fix is a grocery store sponge and a month of leaving the tank alone. But that is the truth of it.
Ammonia was never something you neutralize. It is something you grow a colony to eat. And the biggest cheap home you can hand that colony is sitting in the cleaning aisle for a dollar. Cut one to fit this weekend. Wedge it in your filter flow and let the boring little bacteria do the work the bottles only pretended to. Your fish will never know why they stopped dying. You will.
