People laughed at him, called him paranoid, and accused him of wasting billions of yen on something they believed would never be needed. Nearby towns chose to build much smaller 20-ft walls instead to save [music] money. But Wamura refused to back down and insisted the wall had to be bigger. Even after his death in 1997, many people still believed he had wasted the village's money. Then in 2011, a massive tsunami struck Japan. Nearby towns were completely destroyed within minutes and their smaller walls failed almost instantly. More than 20,000 people died, but Wamura's village survived. The 50-ft wall stopped the tsunami [music] and not a single person was killed.
