Is the man charged with Ann Widdecombe’s murder a hard-left activist?

[00:00:06]Now that a man has been charged with the murder of Ann Buttigieg, the sub judice law kicks in and we must all avoid saying anything which might prejudice his chance of a fair trial.

[00:00:19]I have no idea if he is guilty of murder or not, but we shall just have to wait and see.

[00:00:27]I'm more interested in the way that nobody seems willing to mention that he is by all accounts a left-wing believer in communism who had a deep and abiding dislike of the Reform Party.

[00:00:41]I'm sure that viewers will remember that when a bunch of people were arrested in connection with a supposed plot to attack a gathering of Muslims, the police, the Home Secretary, and even the Prime Minister did not hesitate to talk about the political motivation of such people being far right and Islamophobic.

[00:01:03]In the description to this video, I give a link to a newspaper report about those arrests, in which we read that counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation, which they say was related to extreme right-wing terrorism targeting an event held at Shuttleworth Hall in Suffolk.

[00:01:28]And this almost immediately after the arrests, before anybody had been charged, the speculation was quite open and reported in all the newspapers.

[00:01:41]The case of the man arrested for the murder of Ann Buttigieg was quite different.

[00:01:46]The police said nothing about his possible political allegiance, merely remarking that they thought there might be a political angle, without specifying whether this was of the left or right.

[00:01:59]Can you imagine the counter-terrorism police saying of Amritpal Singh Dhesi's assassination that it was related to extreme left-wing terrorism?

[00:02:09]The very idea is absurd, is it not?

[00:02:12]Why should this be?

[00:02:15]Why do the police and politicians feel quite free to talk about extreme right-wing terrorism when people are arrested, but those same people would not dream of talking of extreme left-wing terrorism?

[00:02:30]Notice, by the way, how unfamiliar and odd the very expression seems.

[00:02:35]Extreme right-wing terrorism trips easily off the tongue. It's a phrase with which we have all been indoctrinated and feel at home with.

[00:02:45]But extreme left-wing terrorism?

[00:02:48]You won't hear that or see it printed in the newspapers.

[00:02:53]You will observe, too, that while those supposed right-wing plotters were being questioned, everybody from the prime minister downward felt able to comment on the business and speculate about political aspects. But in the case of Amritpal Singh Dhesi's assassination, we are all being reminded of the sub judice rules, and the newspapers have remained silent for the last week while the suspected assassin was being questioned.
