[00:03:21]Hey, Shelly, what else can you tell me about Pacific whitesided dolphins? Here's what I found. Pacific whitesided dolphins have a unique color combination and pattern called counter shading that helps camouflage them to better escape danger and to be more efficient hunters. Wow.

[00:04:14]>> Pacific whitesided dolphins are called the acrobats of the sea because of their agility, strength, and ability to leap over 20 ft out of the water. They are also among the fastest swimmers in the ocean, capable of reaching speeds of up to 25 mph.

[00:04:36]You can find Pacific white-sided dolphins primarily in the northern Pacific Ocean between Japan and California. You can also find them at SeaWorld San Antonio, one of only two facilities in the United States that care for these animals. Some people also find that they can see the things around them just by looking up.

[00:08:01]>> Hey Shelly, do beluga whales have anything else that helps them find? I don't know if I'm ever going to be able to find them. Beluga whales do not have a dorsal fin like other dolphins and whales commonly have. Instead, beluga whales have a dorsal ridge which has a thicker layer of skin, allowing them to swim closely underneath large sheets of ice. The ability to get so close to the ice provides better masking against predators and allows them to push up against the ice, creating small air pockets for breathing. Oh gosh darn it, there's got to be something in here called >> Did you know that the luga whales are nicknamed the canary due to a wide variety of sound?

[00:09:04]Thanks to our location, it looks like we are near the Cook Inlet, which is home to an endangered group called the Cook Inlet Wales with fewer than 350 members remaining.

[00:09:25]Really? How? By recycling materials used in everyday life. picking up after yourself when visiting beaches, lakes, rivers, and other waterways, as well as eating sustainably sourced fish. These are all great ways to help keep the ocean safe and healthy for marine life everywhere. Oh, yeah. That's why I have my handy dandy reusable water bottle.

[00:13:28]Look at all that water. the deep blue sea. A lair has to be a Pacific white-sided dolphin or a beluga whale out there somewhere.

[00:13:39]You know, when you care about something so much, the solution can be more simple than you realize. Try looking a little deeper. Maybe you need to follow your heart.

[00:13:51]How much deeper do I have to go? I've traveled to the Pacific Northwest, typed through the tallest trees, scrolled the worldwide web, clicked through the pages of so many books. I zoomed in with my binoculars. I even followed the biggest map ever. And I still haven't found a beloved whale or a Pacific white sa dolphin. Just seems like there's nothing else I can do. Yes, there is. That's what I've been trying to tell you.

[00:14:21]Books, the internet, maps, even me are all great tools to use when starting your journey. But they aren't always the best tools in your backpack when you are trying to discover new things.

We can pick up trash, recycle often, eat fish that is sustainably sourced, and we can visit places like SeaWorld, who've dedicated over 60 years to marine mammal research, helping animals all over the globe.
