This is the black skimmer.
Its black back and white body make it easy to recognize, but its most unusual feature is the bill.
The lower jaw is much longer than the upper jaw.
It may look unbalanced when the bird is standing on a beach.
In flight, that shape begins to make sense.
The skimmer lowers itself until it is only a short distance above the water.
It opens its bill before the lower jaw enters the surface. The upper jaw usually remains above the water.
The lower jaw continues forward beneath it.
The bird does not need to see a fish before beginning the catch.
Instead, it waits for contact.
When a fish touches the lower jaw, the neck gives and the head moves downward and backward.
The upper jaw comes down as the jaws close around the prey.
