Crystal Clear Water With a Bucket... The Cheap Old Filter
Added:I am going to show you today how to take muddy, cloudy, dirty looking water and run it through a simple bucket and have it come out the other end crystal clear, clear as glass with a few pennies of gravel and sand and charcoal that you can gather or buy almost anywhere. It is an old and a good and a genuinely useful thing to know how to do. But before I show you one single step of it, I am going to tell you the most important thing in this whole video. And I'm going to tell it to you first and plainly because a person's life can hang on it and it is the one thing these bucket filter videos almost never tell you.
Clear is not the same as safe. Making water clear does not make water safe to drink. I am Elias Yodar and I will show you the whole of this honestly. both how to make the water beautifully clear and the plain hard truth of what you must still do after to make it fit to drink because I would never hand you a thing that could make you sick by only telling you half of it. If you want it, it is there. That is all. Now, let us understand this rightly. My grandfather taught me this the hard way, or near enough, and I have never forgotten it. There was a spring on the far end of the place, and the water ran out of the rock clear as glass, the prettiest water you ever saw.
And as a boy, I bent to drink from it one hot day. And he caught my arm before I could. And I was put out because the water was so plainly clean, anyone could see it was clean. It was clearer than what came from our own well. And he said to me, "Clear is not the same as clean, boy, and clean is not the same as safe.
That water runs pretty because the rock strains the mud out of it. It does not strain out what a sick animal left in the field above, and you cannot see that, and neither can I." And that is exactly why you do not trust your eyes with water." And he was right. And it is the truest thing anyone ever taught me about water. And it is the whole spine of this video.
Your eyes are the wrong tool for judging whether water is safe. Water tells your eyes about mud and nothing else. The thing that actually makes water dangerous is invisible and always has been. And the prettiest, clearest water in the world can carry it. So the first thing I am putting in your hands today before any bucket or any sand is my grandfather's hand on my arm. Clear is not safe. Do not trust your eyes. Now we can begin. So let me say that most important thing again and then explain it and then I will show you the filter and then I will come back to it once more at the end because it matters that much. This bucket filter makes dirty water clear. It takes out the mud, the grit, the bits of leaf and dirt and cloudiness and it leaves you water that looks clean and clear and lovely. But there are things in bad water that you cannot see at all. No matter how clear it looks, there are tiny living things, germs, bacteria, and the little bugs that live in creek and pond water like the one folks call beaver fever and viruses. And these are what actually make you sick. And these are far, far too small for any bucket of sand and gravel to catch. So water can come out of this filter looking absolutely crystal clear and still be full of the very things that will give you a violent sickness. the kind that empties you out both ends and can genuinely kill a small child or an old person through the loss of water alone. That is the whole danger and it is why I put it first. A person makes clear water in a bucket and it looks so clean and they drink it because it looks clean and they get dreadfully sick because clear was never the same as safe. Your eyes cannot see the thing that hurts you. So, you never ever trust clear water to be safe water just because it looks clean. So, then what is this filter for if it does not make water safe? Two honest things. First, it makes cloudy water clear and that is genuinely useful all on its own for washing, for cleaning, for your animals to drink, for a hundred jobs that do not require drinking pure water. And second, and this is the important one, it is the first step before you make water safe to drink. Because to make water safe, the shest old way is to boil it. And boiling muddy water is a poor business. The mud bakes and the water tastes of dirt and the filth is still in there. So you filter it clear first and then you boil the clear water. And now you have water that is both clear and safe. The filter and the boiling are partners. The filter makes it clear. The boiling makes it safe. You need both. And the filter comes first. Hold that firmly in your mind. And now let me show you how to build the thing because it is a satisfying and clever old piece of work.
You take a bucket, a clean foodgrade bucket, one that held food and not chemicals, and you drill or punch a small hole in the bottom or in the side right at the bottom for the clean water to run out of. Under that hole, you set a clean jar or a second bucket to catch what comes through. That is your vessel.
Now, you build up the layers inside it.
And the order is everything. So, pay attention to the order. The water is going to go in the top and trickle down through all the layers and come out the bottom. So, we build it so the water meets the coarse stuff first and the fine stuff last. No, I have that backwards for you. And let me say it rightly because this is where folks get confused. The water goes in the top. So, at the top, you want the finer material that does the fine cleaning. And as it goes down, it passes into coarser and coarser material that holds everything up and lets the clean water run free out the bottom. Let me give you the layers from the bottom up the way you build it.
At the very bottom, right over your drain hole, you put a layer of the largest stones, clean coarse gravel or small, clean rocks. This is the bottom and its job is to hold everything else up and to let the finished water flow freely to the hole without the hole clogging. A good few inches of coarse gravel at the bottom. On top of that coarse gravel, a layer of smaller gravel or coarse grit, medium stuff to bridge between the big stones below and the fine sand above. So the sand does not just wash down through the big stones. a few inches of that. Now, on top of that, the heart of the whole filter, a good thick layer of clean, fine sand. This is the layer that does most of the real work of clearing the water. The fine sand catching the fine particles as the water works its way through the tiny spaces between the grains. You want this layer thick, the thickest layer of all, many inches, because the more sand the water has to pass through and the slower it goes, the clearer it comes out. Fine sand, thick and clean. And let me tell you why the sand works. Because once you understand it, you will build a better filter. When water trickles down through a thick bed of fine sand, it cannot go straight down. It has to wind its way through all the countless tiny crooked gaps between the sand grains, a long, slow, twisting path. And every bit of dirt and grit and cloudiness in that water as it takes that long winding journey brushes up against a grain of sand and catches and sticks and is left behind. So that by the time the water has worked all the way down through many inches of sand, it has been brushed clean of its particles a thousand times over. That is why the layer wants to be thick and the flow wants to be slow. A thin fast layer gives the dirt no time and no distance to be caught and the water comes out still cloudy. A thick slow layer gives it a long journey with a thousand chances to leave its dirt behind and the water comes out clear. So when I say thick sand and slow flow, that is the reason and it is the whole secret of why the thing works at all.
And there is a further wonder in it that the old slow sand filter men knew that after a filter has run a while, a living skin of good tiny life grows on the very top of the sand. And that skin catches and eats a good deal of the fine matter too. So an old established sand filter actually clears better than a brand new one. But even that living skin mind does not make the water safe. It clears. It does not make safe. Nothing here does but the boil. And here is where the charcoal comes in. And I want to be honest with you about charcoal because there is a lot of loose talk about it.
You can put a layer of charcoal in, usually just above or within the sand.
And charcoal does a real thing. It absorbs. It grabs on to certain chemicals and odors and improves the taste and clarity. But here the honest part, the charcoal that truly does this well is what is called activated charcoal, which is specially made and you buy it. A lump of burnt wood from your fire. Plain campfire charcoal is not the same thing and does not do nearly as much, though it will help a little with clarity and smell in a true pinch. So, by all means, add a layer of charcoal activated if you have it, and it will better the taste and the clarity and pull out some chemical nastiness.
But do not let anyone tell you the charcoal makes the water safe to drink because it does not. No more than the sand does. It cleans and it freshens. It does not kill the germs. Now, before you build all this in, there is one step folks skip that makes all the difference, and that is washing your materials. Your sand and your gravel, before they go in the bucket, must be rinsed and rinsed and rinsed with clean water until the water runs clear off them. Because sand and gravel, as you gather or buy it, is full of fine dust and dirt. And if you do not wash it first, your first many buckets of water will come out filthy with that dust, and you will think the filter does not work.
Wash the sand and gravel well first. It is tedious and it is worth it. And one more good practice at the top. Over the top of the sand, you can lay a cloth or a layer of small stones so that when you pour the dirty water in, it does not blast a hole straight down into your careful sand layer, but spreads out gentle across the top. And a cloth at the top also catches the biggest muck and can be lifted off and washed which spares your sand. So there is your filter built from the bottom up. Coarse gravel at the bottom over the hole.
Medium gravel next. A thick deep layer of clean fine sand as the heart of it. A layer of charcoal for taste and clarity.
And a cloth or stones on top to spread the water. You pour your cloudy water in the top slowly and it works its way down through all those layers and it comes trickling out the bottom hole into your jar. And the first bit may be cloudy as it settles in, but it soon runs clear.
And before long, you are getting water out the bottom that is clear as glass and looks nothing like the muddy water you poured in the top. And it is a genuinely wonderful thing to watch the first time and it is real and it works.
Now let me tell you a few honest things about living with such a filter. Before that a word on the water you start with because a wise person makes the whole job easier by choosing and preparing the water well before it ever reaches the bucket. If you have a choice of where to draw your water, running water is generally better than still. So, a flowing creek over a stagnant pond and clearer water over water thick with mud because everything you keep out at the start is less for your filter to fight.
And here is an old trick worth its weight. Let the water settle first. If you dip up a bucket of muddy water and simply let it stand still and undisturbed for some hours, a good deal of the heavier mud and grit sinks of its own accord to the bottom of the bucket.
Then you gently pour or dip off the clearer water from the top, leaving the settled mud behind, and you filter that.
You will find that letting it settle first does half your filters work for free and keeps your sand from clogging so fast. The old folks never fought a job that patience would do for them. And letting water settle overnight is patience doing your work while you sleep. Draw the cleanest water you can.
Let it settle, pour off the top, and then filter. And your filter will run longer and clearer for it.
But mind, and I will not tire of saying it, none of that settling and choosing makes it safe either. It only makes it cleaner to look at. The boil is still coming always. It works slowly, and it should. A filter that runs slow is a filter that runs clear. If yours is racing through, your sand layer is too thin or too coarse and the water is not spending enough time in the sand to be cleaned. Patience is part of it. You pour it in and you let it take its time.
Over time, it clogs because it is catching dirt, which is its whole job.
and the caught dirt slowly fills up the top of the sand. When it slows down too much or stops clearing well, you lift off your top cloth and wash it and you can scrape off the top dirty half inch of sand and eventually you wash or replace the sand entirely. A filter that has caught a great deal of dirt is a dirty thing itself and wants cleaning.
This is normal.
Now, let me come back around as I promised to the thing that matters most because we have made beautiful clear water and now I must make sure you live to be glad of it. You have your clear water. It is not yet safe water. Now you make it safe. And here is how plainly the shest old way, the way that needs nothing you do not have is to boil it.
You bring that clear filtered water to a good rolling boil, a real tumbling boil.
And you keep it there for a full minute.
A rolling boil for 1 minute and longer, a few minutes if you are high up in the mountains where water boils cooler. That rolling boil kills the germs and the bacteria and the little creek bugs and the viruses, all the things the filter could not catch. And now at last your water is both clear and safe and you may drink it. Filter it clear then boil it hard for a minute. That is the whole and complete method and neither half is optional if you mean to drink it. There are other ways to make clear water safe.
chemical drops and tablets made for it and the proper store-bought filters built and certified to actually remove the germs which are a fine thing to own and the real tool for the long hall if you can. But the boiling is the old way that needs nothing but a fire and a pot and it has kept people alive for as long as there has been fire and it never fails you. So let me be very plain about what I have given you and what I have not because honesty is the whole of my trade with you. I have given you a way to make dirty water clear cheaply with a bucket. That is real and useful. I have not given you a way to make water safe by itself because no bucket of sand can do that. And anyone who tells you their bucket filter makes creek water safe to drink straight is telling you a thing that can land you in the hospital or worse. Clear from the bucket, safe from the boil, both together and you are well served. Only the one and you are fooling yourself with water that looks clean.
Now, who profits from the confusion between clear and safe? And I will say it careful as always because I am not telling you there is a scheme, some room of men muddying the matter on purpose.
It is quieter than that. Clear water sells. A video of muddy water going in and glass clear water coming out is a wonderful thing to watch and it gets passed around. And the boring, unglamorous, lifesaving truth that you still have to boil it gets left off because it is not exciting and it slows the story down. Nobody is lying on purpose. Mostly they are just leaving off the dull part that happens to be the part that keeps you alive. So the plain old complete knowing filter and then boil got shaved down to the pretty half.
Well, I have given you the whole of it, both halves, because half of this particular knowing is worse than none.
Let us keep it whole. Here is what I would ask of you. If you take up this good old skill, and I hope you do, make yourself a promise right now before you ever build it, that you will never drink from it without boiling, no matter how clean that water looks coming out. Say it to yourself and mean it. Clear is not safe. I will boil it. Build the filter for the joy and the use of clearing water and keep the boiling as the iron rule you never break for drinking water.

There is a reason an old farmhouse holds its heat through a bitter winter night, while the new house next door goes cold before morning. It is not luck. It is not a better furnace. It is built right into the walls and I have walked past it my whole life. That is the very next video and there will be no more delay of any kind. You have my word and I will keep it. So build your bucket with washed gravel coarse at the bottom and fine sand thick in the heart of it and charcoal for the taste. Pour slow and let it run slow and clear. Use the clear water freely for washing and animals and every job that is not drinking. And never once forget that clear is not safe. That to drink it, you must boil that clear water at a rolling boil for a full minute. And only then is it truly fit to drink. The people who built this country with their hands knew that. And we are only just starting to remember
