While achieving insulin independence is a monumental scientific leap, the trade-off for lifelong immunosuppression means we are simply swapping one chronic dependency for another. It is a sophisticated proof of concept that still lacks a practical, scalable solution for the general population.

Scientists May Have Just Changed Diabetes Treatment ForeverAñadido:
What if your body could make insulin again?
On its own.
Researchers are now testing a therapy that replaces the damaged cells inside the pancreas, the ones that are supposed to produce insulin.
In a 2024 trial in China, a type 1 diabetes patient received stem cell derived islets made from her own cells.
75 days later, she no longer needed insulin injections.
Her blood sugar stayed in a healthy range over 96% of the time.
In 2025, Vertex Pharmaceuticals published phase 1 and 2 trial data in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Every patient who received the full dose had zero severe low blood sugar events and hit their HbA1c targets.
But let's be clear about what this isn't yet. Most patients still need immunosuppressive drugs. These treatments are still in clinical trials.
Nothing is approved or available to the public.
Still, for the first time, the phrase insulin independence isn't just theoretical. It's showing up in real patients in peer-reviewed journals.
This is not a cure, but it may be the closest science has ever come to one.
