This analysis masterfully bridges the gap between formal music theory and digital subculture, revealing the sophisticated structural depth hidden within game music. It provides a lucid look at how rhythmic complexity and tonal contrast elevate electronic production into a serious art form.

NIKKE - At last: Egovista // Reaction & Analysis
Added:Hey, what's up everybody? Welcome back to another Ego Vista reaction. And don't skip yet because there's an update on the True Fire Power cover. We have the guitar in, we've got the bass in. Now it's all on me. I've got to do the drums. I've got to do a few extra layers of guitar most likely. And then also the vocals. Still not positive if I'm going to sing it myself yet or not, or if I'm going to hire out for that. We'll see. I have to try my voice in the mix to know if I'm actually going to like the way I sounded it. Either way, there's your update. And now we're going to get to Ego Vista, which people still really wanted me to hear. So without further ado, let's go.
Okay.
Oh, sorry. I was I thought it was going to be something else.
The Latin always trips me up.
>> Oh. Oh [ __ ] Just straight up dubstep, huh?
Okay.
Oh god. Sorry. That's filthy.
Still some of that classical edge in there.
Hell yeah.
Beautiful voice choice.
Jesus.
>> When I started hearing the like big epic choir going, I'm like, "Okay, it's going to be this weird." But then it went more in the direction I expect out of Nik as a whole.
I thought they were going to do like a full orchestral sort of thing and not make it too electronic, but I thought wrong.
Filthy, filthy triplets.
Cool.
Okay. Double time.
A weird change up there.
I didn't hate it though.
Just never expect the like one or two measure >> like little interludes of halftime to double time.
>> Also, how do you pronounce this producers's name? Zixnix.
Xen. Maybe I could say Xen. Xen would make sense. I mean, Zixnix would also kind of make sense, but Xenex is easier to say. And the lowercase X, knowing what I know about the scene would feel it would fit right, right? Like, it fits. So, this is one of those songs that just plainly, cleanly, and simply kicks [ __ ] ass. You can't really put it in any other category because that's what it is. You know, there are some really neat blends in this song. There's a lot of really beautiful moments in this track that blends that dubstep heavy really grindy sort of sound with this very lifting beautiful sort of like just mostly the orchestral stuff. All those strings and everything really supporting it with like the brass sounds too and the brass sound likes in the synths. Just kind of marrying those two as perfectly as you could. Xenex did an amazing job on this one. I'm going to marry the pronunciation of Xenex. I'm not entirely sure if that's right, but if it is wrong, somebody please correct me.
Regardless, this one is fun, but it also does the thing that makes me not able to talk too much about the chord progressions because it's an electronic song. We're sitting here on D minor, but sometimes it's also D. That's it. You know, like there's really not much else happening. When we do get to the uh parts that are more supported by the coral stuff, like about halfway in, we do like a a D minor, C, B flat, G minor, I think, is roughly what goes on there.
It might be B flat, C minor, D minor as well. It maybe even bouncing around between those two. But that's a very nice progression. And I really like how this feels and it just sinks you deep into that G minor. I really love that.
And at the end of the song, I think there's actually an A minor as well that kind of like might lift up into a resolution of and a lot of the times when I hear those, I'm like, oh, it might be like a sus4 settling into the major chord. But I don't think that's happening here because it just doesn't sound quite the same. It is a little different, just coming from a different direction basically. And I don't think that's necessarily the case. Could be like a a sus 2 up, but either way, it just sounds really cool. And I love how that ends there because it could go from like that to settling up onto the D up here, but most likely it doesn't go that high. I don't think it actually ends on like a positive lift or anything. Not a lot of electronic music tends to in the dubstep scene at very least. A lot of it tends to keep that like more gritty, dark aesthetic and doesn't really lean too hard into the happygolucky sound that's usually saved for more like just dance music and standard trance stuff even. But you don't really get that in dubstep because there's so much sound design that's kind of grinding in there that it feels weird to have a positive dubstep song. It's not impossible by any means, but it's definitely not the commonplace option. So for this song, a lot of really fun parts to it. I love how it started because it legitimately tricked me. I thought we were going to be getting some like Latinbacked hyper classical stuff and I was like, "Ooh, cool. This is going to be a new sound coming out of this game for me." I don't think I had heard something this legitimately classical coming through this game on its own. There's been like sort of um inspiration of that in the game before. I've heard a few songs that have gotten pretty close to that, but similarly to this one, they never go fully into that. They always kind of root themselves in this EDM, electronic music, general vibe. They always go for some other genre to be uh hybridized in there. And in this case, just really true to form dubstep [ __ ] Love that.
But I think Xenox really cooked with this one, especially with like the weird rhythm stuff that he was kind of tossing in there. Sounds [ __ ] amazing. those like one or two little moments where there was like a significant switch up in the rhythm just for like the halftime to double time. That again does not happen a lot of the time in these songs.
And when it does happen, it's usually like right before a chorus or leading into something else. And for this one, it didn't really do that. It kind of just threw them in somewhere. It wasn't really leading it in another direction.
It didn't bring the song anywhere. It was just for the love of the game. It was just to play around with the rhythm.
And that is some of the most fun options for me. They're the hardest to figure out when you're playing the drums blind especially, but really fun to hear and I love hearing those really neat ideas coming through of just, hey, I wanted to try this, so I'm going to. Here you go.
I think X knocked it out of the park with this one. I don't really have much else to say as a result. Like I mentioned, there's not much else I can say about the chord progressions and how it all builds because it is fairly simple. All things considered, it is mostly that D and D minor situation. So, there you go. That's most of the track.
EDM just does that a lot. So, I do think that's about all I got to say here.
Thank you all so very much for watching.
Hopefully, you're all looking forward to the true firepower cover coming at some point. Again, not really marrying any sort of due date for that one, but there's things happening. Things are in, and that's always good. So, hopefully you're excited for that because I know I am. And if you have anything else you want me to get to, by all means, drop in the comments below and I will do my best. As always, if you don't want to do any of that though and you just want to follow me and support me for more stuff coming in the future, you know how to do all that. And I'll see all of you in the next video. Goodbye.
