A masterclass in hardware synergy that strips the pretension from IDM through disciplined, tactile sound design. It proves that rhythmic complexity is a result of meticulous layering rather than mere academic abstraction.

Building an IDM Track From Scratch (Digitakt + Digitone)
Added:Yo yo, how's it going? Today we're going to be making a track from scratch and going to uh have had words of canon on the mind the past two weeks since the album has released. More like a month, but I'm going to see if I can pull some uh inspiration from that. been uh posting some videos here and there, some shorts. You all missed it.
Uh check that out. But I'm starting from scratch, so there's no no sounds loaded.
And uh some reason There it is. Need a There we go. That was weird.
Let's uh start off with some uh sound design.
And then uh I was thinking about starting the track with a beat, but I feel like that might uh kind of box this in to what the beat is doing. So rather than the start off with the beat and boxes in, I'm going to see what kind of a chord structure or melody comes off of my head and kind of let that guide how long this sequence is going to be. And then I'll build the beat around that.
Let's start off with the pretty Simple wave tone patch.
sounds nice and crunchy right off the bat. Give it some phase distortion.
Right now, I'm just kind of scanning around, see what what kind of sound I can automate with an LFO.
Right now, there's not much change going on.
We can also mess around with our ring mod.
Oh, that instantly gives it movement.
And also turn off our reset on our phase. That way they're just kind of oscillating back and forth whenever you press the keys. They're not they're not resetting each press.
Yes, it's it's live.
Give it some oscillator drift.
It is nice.
Is it long?
Let me see if I can remedy that because I know this is loud.
He's a tech.
What up, bro? Do it live.
I think it's just cuz I'm not hitting the the keys that hard.
So, you can probably set that up with the velocity to volume and change the can set it off.
Yeah, there you go. See, it's like super loud now. I might actually tame that down just a bit.
Okay, so what was I playing?
Uh tame some of the frequencies.
Taking off some of the bass.
Oh yeah, I think it's also cuz uh Mic is like super close to me.
So, we're going to start off with that.
the type of tempo.
See where this ends up.
Okay.
Turn on the metronome.
Holy crap, that's fast.
Something like that.
Mhm.
Okay, I'm going to loop that.
Oh, you're killing me.
Okay.
Hey, what's up, Simon? Doing all right, man?
All right.
Okay.
So we're going with the length of 80.
So 80 * 2 is 160.
Okay.
Turn off the metronome.
Now we're going to bump up the reverb 120 just to give it that spacey vibe.
We're going to take off the lows.
And now we're going to beat the reverb.
Going to give this some uh increase the attack time.
and try giving it some overdrive.
Now, let's come up with the base patch.
Let's see.
Let's set our operators in the center.
I'm going to change the algorithm.
Heat. Heat.
Yeah, let me fix this.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Put some harmonic resonance.
We can vary the pad sound.
We're excluding it out of the mix.
Mess around with the offsets.
Some movement.
Heat. Heat.
Damn, that sounds sick.
Okay, I'm going to automate this little change in level.
So ratio a level.
Yes, we can do a saw.
Reverse sound.
Do a one.
Hell yeah.
Hell yeah, bro.
Heat. Heat.
All right. Kind of losing the one here.
Does it sound all right?
Is my voice still too loud?
Sweet.
All right, I'm going to do this half speed. That way we get we get uh two cycles of this.
So yeah, I mean this uh the the pad is not even in the mix right now, so it shouldn't sound loud. But if I included the dry signal, it's definitely a lot more audible.
Oh, that gives me a idea. I'm going to copy this sound.
Copy the preset. I'm going to put it underneath.
Go into track one settings and do a track Larry sitch. So track one is going to layer or it's going to activate track nine.
This is the same sound, but we're going to drown this out the audio routing.
So, but we're not just going to do that.
We're going to transpose it up an octave.
track one. A little bit more attack.
And uh the one that's up an octave.
Let's uh put up the filter. We can actually hear it.
Heat.
Heat.
Okay.
Heat.
Let me take out more of the lows.
That way the bass patch comes through a lot clearer.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Hat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Cool.
Hey, what's up, Tactical Midi?
Let's give this uh brighter melodic layer on top.
Yeah.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
P.
Mess around with the delay settings.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat.
Sounds kind of like a guitar.
Down.
1 1 1 day.
Heat. Heat.
Hey, hey, hey.
A faster delay.
It's still a little too bright.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Yeah, that sounds cool.
Try to give it some movement.
I've taken out some of the arpeggiator steps.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Let's see if we can come up with a drum groove to match that.
Heat. Heat.
I read your mind, dude.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Hey, heat. Hey, heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Hey, hey, hey.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat.
Take care, dude.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Let's pull up another preset or the first preset.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Let's save that pattern.
Uh bring it over to another fresh pattern.
Paste that.
Copy it. Right. Copy a pattern.
Pattern.
Okay.
Going to start putting some ghost notes.
You know what? Actually, I'm going to try um let's do a more of a regular rhythm.
Yeah. Tactical meeting. Did you get to try yet?
I thought that thing was never going to get an update.
I'm glad it did, though.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Hey, hey, hey.
Heat. Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
I'm going introduce some random on every 13th trig.
I get a chance of a rim shot.
Heat. Hey, Heat.
Woo! Woo!
Woo!
Number Oh, hey.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat. N.
Heat up here.
Heat. Heat. N.

Heat.
Hey, heat. Hey, heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat up here. Heat. Heat.
Heat Sweet. Let's see if I can uh resample this drum drum break.
Uh on start.
Okay, let's try it again.
and trim it in.
That's fine. Okay.
Chop this brake.
Let's put it on drag nine.
Change the machine to uh to a grid. And hey, It doesn't really work.
Slice it.
Slice points.
Add one.
Got another One or the other.
Heat up here. Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
