During wartime, military leadership changes can occur due to public pressure and the need for strategic reform, as demonstrated when Ukrainian President Zelensky sacked Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi following nationwide protests and appointed General Mykhailo Drapatyi to lead military reforms focused on innovation, drone warfare, and battlefield strategy.

ZEL BOWS DOWN? Ukraine Army Chief Syrskyi Sacked; Zelensky Names Drapatyi After Mass Protests
Added:Ukraine's wartime leadership has been rocked by a stunning political reversal.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has sacked commander-in-chief Oleksandr Syrskyi after days of nationwide protests in what is being [music] seen as one of the biggest shake-ups of Ukraine's military command since Russia's full-scale invasion.
The move comes after thousands of Ukrainians took to the streets following the dismissal of popular defense minister Mykhailo Fedorov.
Protesters accused Syrskyi of blocking military reforms and demanded his removal, piling unprecedented public pressure on Zelenskyy to change course.
Zelenskyy has now handed command of Ukraine's armed forces to 43-year-old General Mykhailo Drapatyi, a frontline commander widely viewed as the face of a younger, innovation-driven military.
Drapatyi has advocated faster battlefield decisions, greater accountability, and deeper integration of drone warfare.
>> For the first time, I have determined that Mykhailo Drapatyi will become the new commander-in-chief of the armed forces of Ukraine. Together with Mykhailo, Yevhen Khmara, and Pavlo Palisa, we determined how the configuration of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine should be updated. The fact is that Oleksandr Syrskyi ensured Ukraine's results in the defense of Kyiv and the Kharkiv offensive operation, in the Kursk operation. A significant path has been traveled. The defense of Ukraine continues, and a decent attitude towards every warrior is needed.
>> Despite removing him from the top post, Zelenskyy publicly praised Syrskyi, crediting him with defending Kyiv, leading the Kharkiv counteroffensive, and commanding the Kursk operation.
But the president also ordered a sweeping overhaul of Ukraine's military leadership, including a new defense strategy, reforms to the command structure, expanded drone capabilities, and changes to mobilization.
>> I am grateful to Oleksandr Syrskyi and to each of our warriors for Ukraine's strong front-line positions. I am grateful to Mykhailo Drapatyi, to him for exactly this perspective. Today, we spoke with Oleksandr Syrskyi and Andriy [clears throat] Hnatov about further formats of service and the proper handover of affairs. Second, we defined with Mykhailo Drapatyi which tasks must be implemented in the near future and in the medium term. Operations of the defense forces of Ukraine are ongoing and must continue steadily.
>> The dramatic leadership overhaul underscores growing tensions inside Ukraine over how the war should be fought.
While supporters see Drapatyi's appointment as a victory for reform and battlefield innovation, the shake-up also exposes rare public divisions at a critical moment in the war with Russia.
The coming weeks will reveal whether Zelenskyy's high-stakes gamble strengthens Ukraine's military or deepens the political fault lines exposed by the protests.
