Penguins Feeding Time | Cute & Hungry Penguins in Action!ADVENTURE AQUARIUM

[00:00:00]we don't have any penguins that live in our own backyard as local birds, but we do have some other really awesome local birds that live around here that we can protect in similar ways. So, doing things like putting out bird houses and bird feeders, and making sure that our cats stay indoors are great ways that we can protect our local wildlife here in New Jersey.

[00:00:17]Uh but, our biologists do give our penguins those nesting boxes uh around the winter into the early spring again during the nesting season. Uh it's really fun to watch those penguins around that time, too, uh because they'll show some of their uh behaviors there. So, these penguins don't typically mate for life. They have about a 50% divorce rate between nesting seasons. So, it gets a little bit dramatic.

[00:00:40]Then they'll have some plastic plants our biologists will put around here to be able to uh tend into those nesting boxes. They can use those plants for at least to stand and build their nests.

[00:00:49]Then throughout the season, our biologists will check and see if our penguins have laid any eggs. And then hopefully we'll have little blue penguin chicks hatch in our colony here. Uh this past nesting season, we did have three little blue penguin chicks hatch in our colony, which is so, so awesome. Uh their names are Yukon, Thistle, and Eclipse. So, they are the penguins with the brown, purple, and orange uh bracelets.

[00:01:15]So, those bracelets that the penguins are wearing are used by our biologists to identify individuals in the colony here. So, you can see some of them have a bracelet with a number on it. Uh usually our penguins will have numbers to help to identify them. Some of our newer penguins, though, they have uh different colored bracelets to be able to identify them instead.

[00:01:34]Uh and it's right now a little bit of a transitional period for the bracelets that they're wearing. They have a new supplier, so some of them uh might have some different colored bracelets from each other. And usually our molting penguins will wear temporary bracelets for their molts as they do put on a little bit of weight during that period of time.

[00:01:53]But, you'll notice that all of our penguins do look very similar right now, even though we do have three juvenile aisles in the colony. They do grow really quickly. So, just about 8 weeks after they hatch, little blue penguins will be essentially full size and look really the same as the adult little blue penguins. But again, they won't be considered adults until they have their first molt. Uh so, for our current juveniles, that's probably going to be next summer.

[00:02:23]And then, this is the tail end of the feed here, so you can see a lot of our penguins are sort of losing interest.
