BAC 1-11. The skies of the 1960s were loud, shaky, and cramped. Then, a sleek British jet arrived and changed short-haul travel forever. The BAC 1-11 looked different from almost everything flying at the time. Its twin engines sat at the rear. Its cabin felt smoother, quieter, faster. Passengers who were used to rattling turbo props [music] suddenly felt like they had stepped into the future. The aircraft first flew on August 20th, 1963, and entered airline service in 1965.
Airlines loved it because, in its later variants, it could carry up to around 120 passengers in high-density layouts on busy regional routes while cruising at nearly 550 mph.
American Airlines alone operated 30 aircraft, a shocking commitment back then, because US airlines rarely trusted foreign-built jets.
But the 1-11 nearly died before it even began. In October 1963, the prototype crashed during testing at Boscombe Down, killing all seven crew members. Engineers uncovered a terrifying problem called deep stall.
The aircraft could lose control completely at high angles. Instead of abandoning the jet, the industry response led to the adoption of revolutionary stick shaker and stick pusher safety systems.

It carried Soviet ambition across continents. The Il-62 could fly up to around 8,000 to 9,000 km and cruise at around 850 km/h.
That meant Moscow to Montreal without stopping under the right conditions. At a time when many airports were rough, isolated, and freezing cold, this aircraft kept flying. Siberian winters, desert heat, violent turbulence.
Then came the surprise.
The aircraft relied on conventional mechanical and hydraulic controls rather than digital fly-by-wire systems.
Pilots controlled this giant jet with cables, hydraulic boosters, and raw skill.
Yet it still became one of Aeroflot's most trusted long-haul aircraft, logging extraordinarily high daily utilization on key routes.
About 292 aircraft were built. World leaders flew in VIP versions packed with secure communications and private lounges. Even decades later, a few Il-62s still fly today. That is the real legacy of the Il-62.

Records from the period indicated completed a transatlantic crossing in around 5 hours and 1 minute, a remarkable benchmark for a subsonic jet that stood for many years. Airlines initially pushed the plane into early retirement during the 1970s oil crisis due to high fuel consumption. Yet, the military quickly seized upon its robust structural integrity.
The Royal Air Force converted these high-performing passenger models into massive aerial refueling tankers, extending their lifespan for decades.

It didn't just fly, >> [music] >> it shattered the limits of aviation, reaching around 1,400 mph at altitudes of roughly 52,000 ft.
To survive treacherous low-speed landings, engineers added retractable mustache canards near the cockpit to grab extra lift, but beneath the futuristic glamour hid a terrifying reality.

Hawker Siddeley Trident In 1962, a sleek British trijet roared into the sky, ready to spark an aviation revolution.
The Hawker Siddeley Trident was fast, cruising at around 560 mph.
Yet, a devastating business decision almost killed it before it could truly fly.
British European Airways forced designers to limit the plane's passenger capacity to match its specific route network.
This ultimately allowed its American rival, the Boeing 727, to capture the global market with a more versatile design. While Boeing sold over 1,000 planes, the Trident stalled at just 117 aircraft built.
It was a commercial heartbreak that no amount of engineering brilliance could overcome.
But the Trident had a secret weapon that would change aviation forever. Thick, blinding fog constantly paralyzed London airports.
To conquer nature, engineers packed a massive electronics bay beneath the flight deck, [music] offsetting the nose wheel just to make it fit.
On June 10th, 1965, the Trident pulled off the ultimate milestone. It executed one of the world's very first fully automatic blind landings during a scheduled [music] passenger flight. Its triplicated computer systems voted on guidance decisions in real time, safely guiding the plane through zero visibility conditions while other airliners diverted in panic.
It pioneered the automated all-weather operations that keep global skies moving safely today.
Boeing 737 The aviation industry was leaving Boeing behind in 1964.
Competitors already ruled the skies with sleek, tail-mounted engines. Boeing desperately needed a breakthrough to win the short-haul market. Then Boeing's engineering team tore up the rule book.
They moved the engines directly under the wings.
This single structural decision unlocked an unprecedented six-abreast seating configuration and lowered the entire fuselage for easy passenger boarding.
Lufthansa became the launch customer, signing on in 1965.
By February 10th, 1968, the revolutionary Boeing 737 entered commercial service, changing short-haul travel forever.
