This video demonstrates the iterative design process for creating a survival ship in Space Engineers, showing how a designer evolved from a basic narrow frame hauler (HF-3) through multiple iterations to create the Cutlass 3, which features a modular design with survival systems, cargo containers, refineries, and defensive turrets, while balancing practical functionality with aesthetic improvements like paint schemes and thruster modifications.

The Cutlass 3 | A Mobile Survival Base
Added:All right, guys. Welcome back. This is kind of like a status update, if you will. Got a new ship here. This is the Cutless 3.
Now, it's just got like some light armorament. It's only got two assault cannons and we got uh two artillery cannons as well on both sides.
And this was basically inspired by this.
This is something that uh that was added to the economy 2 update.
Uh let me get rid of this. This is in the way.
It's in the way.
And delete. Okay.
So, this here is the narrow frame hauler.
It's the HF-3.
This is the cargo version. They have like multiple versions of like similar ships. This one has a jump drive. And what stuck out to me about this ship is at first it was kind of inspired by the spatial armor thing they have going on here. Even though it's not really spatial because this will duct will just act like a solid block and there's not really much there. But it does add quite a bit of depth to the greel as they say in the uh design space engineers uh community or whatever. Here's the interior.
Uh this is basically just your survival kit and then it's got your cockpit up here.
And then this here is off by default.
This is the cabin space, the cryopod and toilet.
Here's a little more storage. A little more.
It's built with the idea of being modular in mind. That's what the little ad cabin thingy says.
Uh, anyways, that's annoying. It has a lot of like broadcast controllers to tell you like when things are like low on fuel, low battery, things of that nature, low oxygen.
Um, here's the jump drive.
And overall, no complaints with this ship, but it is very light duty. So, in the future when we're, you know, we're fighting things and having to inevitably go into combat, um, it's going to be taking quite a beating. And it does come with like some heavy armor, but it's very little.
And it's just not it's just not built to take a beating at all.
And uh, but this anyways, this basic shape is kind of what I was inspired by.
And then if you come over here, this is the the cutless.
And I've upgraded basically all of this to heavy armor.
And all these points and everything actually have a purpose. It's to deflect bullets.
This is also heavy armor, but it leads into a passageway. And all of this is just dead weight.
All of this is I think some of this is light. Yeah.
which is fine because it's not protecting anything that has a purpose.
And this thruster is still buried with a ramp of heavy armor.
And I basically just added like two assault cannons cuz I figured that'd be enough to deal with uh just like light drones and things of that nature.
This isn't like our main combat ship, so don't don't worry there. And under here is the large cargo containers just like the uh the hauler, but I uh I actually dropped these down and I cut the antenna array off and everything.
And instead we have two refineries. It's basically not even the same ship. I would say that the only like similarities is this top uh bridge right here and the rear NL is mostly the same shape, but I still again I uh replaced a lot of this with heavy armor just because this is where the hydrogen tank is and it only has one. I need to upgrade it that it's still a work in progress. I mean, you're never really done with a ship, but uh just a basic tour here. We got two large cargo containers. I sacrificed one for more interior space. We have two refineries and assembler. We have two interior turrets to kill any spiders or anything light duty like that. And then just behind these spaced uh heavy armor shields here is where you enter the ship. And this is where the ship really gets disappointing.
Um it's basically just an empty interior for now.
I figured I figured I should just, you know, I need to get the ship going on here. I went through Whoa. I went through like dozens of iterations before I arrived at this one. Uh I'm I'm pretty much happy with it though. And the reason this is mostly empty is cuz interior space in actual survival, I just view it as something in my way.
Like even having to go upstairs, right, to get to the actual cockpit seat. That is extremely annoying when there's like a ship or two coming after you and you got to I'm even thinking about gutting this out too. We could actually turn this into Well, no. The other turrets are in the way.
I might I might replace this with a landing pad or something. I don't know.
Uh it's probably weird me walking around through here without a gravity generator.
Sorry if that was disorienting.
I have a tendency to talk fast and jump around the screen a lot and people have gotten on to me about that before.
Um, but yeah, I've I've been working on this for about the last 3 days off and on while I do some side jobs and stuff.
And uh, yeah, I just wanted to showcase the the new ship coming to the series and give everybody an update.
But uh, if you'll entertain this video a little bit further, here are some of the iterations and changes that I made.
It's hard to tell exactly like where I even started to be honest. Oh yeah. So this is something else that I was working on. I I was like, "Hey, let's let's just build a whole mother ship and just go all in." And this is just one little section of the mother ship that I was like, "Yeah, we'll we'll go with that." But uh then I was like, "Okay, we we just need to get the series rolling here. We don't need to spend all this time building a mother ship just yet.
This one was going to be like a hydrogen hydrogen atmospheric balance.
Here is like the first beginning stages is this cluster of ships here.
And then then that's the original.
And basically I just added these sides here, these wings. This was the original like little bit of extra shielding and stuff.
The thrusters, they're all the standard original thrusters, but I went ahead and just changed those for the sci-fi cuz just thought they looked nicer.
And here's another iteration. What I do is is I like I reach a certain point and I'm just like, "Okay, this kind of looks good, but maybe I can touch it up a little more or add something else."
Here is just like paint jobs.
And then you just basically just hit C while you're looking at the grid and you can just paste another one. And if you hit B, you can spin it whichever direction and stuff you want. Um but uh this this is basically like the basic way of workflow that I have. I was even like there was one over here somewhere. Oh yeah, this is another section where I was just kind of like hey we need more like thrust and stuff. So, I was like, let's build another NL, but I was just like, eh, I didn't really I didn't really want to work it into the original body. So, I just ended up scrapping the idea and I went to this.
I actually kind of like this one quite a bit.
It's got basically the same setup as the one I uh stayed with.
Got a different color scheme. I kind of still like the black and yellow.
>> [snorts] >> Uh, but I do like these front fins here.
And it just gets narrower as it goes towards the rear.
Here's another paint job of the same thing. These I added on, but I just I don't know. I just wasn't happy with the like the equal plane or whatever. I was like, nah, this needs to be broken up some.
Here's just a few more paint jobs.
Sometimes I'll just paint it white just to get the whole body shape and it shows up in space a little bit better just so I can like better understand what it is I'm working with.
Uh let's see.
Oh, and then I basically was mostly okay with that, but I eventually went to a different paint job. I was like, I wasn't really happy with it.
the rear thrusters or whatever. I was just like, uh, we need more stopping power and stuff. So, I added a few necessels.
And this is just another paint scheme.
Still have this front section here that I was still kind of on the fence about.
And then I arrived at this.
And these are the Nels I was talking about.
And then finally with the new paint scheme and everything set up, I also forgot to mention I actually implemented landing lights for once. I usually skip out on the lights and everything, but uh this was the final paint scheme.
And then there I was pretty much I think we're at a good stopping point. So anyways, I appreciate you guys for stopping by, checking out the ship, and I appreciate all the likes, comments, and everything and the support.
And until next time, have a good one.
