Uh that extra melanin also makes it so you don't get as much um the uh vitamin D synthesis is slowed down the more melanin you have too. Now for people on the equator it's not a problem. People on the equator aren't vitamin D deficient because they live where the sunlight is really intense.
but away from the equator where the sunlight is less intense, >> there's way less of a risk from skin cancer.

Melanin melanin existed in animals before humans existed. So we just inherited it. Some humans have a lot of melanin. Some people that look like me don't have very much at all.

When the DNA changes microscopically, the organism barely changes, but those changes don't go away. So once there have been hundreds of thousands of generations, it means that you've accumulated hundreds of thousands of differences, meaning the organism at the end of that process is different than the organism at the beginning. Here's why it's a perfect analogy to language.
Somebody English didn't happen one day because some people that speak a completely different language gave birth to a baby that started speaking English.
Instead, instead microscopic parts of the language change every generation.
But once there have been so many generations, virtually none of the words are the same anymore. So, it's a completely different language. If I transported you back in time 500 years ago, you could talk to people that live in the British Isles, but it would be kind of difficult. But then if I transported you back a thousand years, you couldn't talk to any of them. All of the words would be different. Yet, every single one of the people living there creates a chain of beings that speak a language that became modern English bit by bit. That's how it happens with DNA.
The DNA changes a tiny bit every generation, but when you have millions of generations, you have dramatic changes.
