What If Everyone Sees Colors Differently Than You?
Added:Look around you right now. Pick any color. The red of a stop sign, the blue of the sky. You are absolutely certain you know what that color looks like. You have known since you were a child, but here is the thing that should unsettle you. You have never seen color through anyone else's eyes, not once. And there is no way to prove that what you call red looks anything like what the person next to you calls red.
What if the color you are seeing right now is something no other human has ever experienced? Your eye contains roughly 6 million cone cells. They come in three types, each tuned to absorb different wavelengths of light. Short wavelengths register as blue, medium as green, long as red. Every color you have ever seen is your brain's interpretation of the signals these cells send back up through your optic nerve. Notice what that means. You do not see color. Your brain constructs it. What arrives at your eye is not red.
It is electromagnetic radiation vibrating at roughly 700 nanometers.
Your visual cortex takes that raw data and renders something. The vivid experience of redness is entirely internal, a simulation built inside your skull.
Neuroscientist David Eagleman has studied how the brain constructs sensory experience. He points out that signals arriving at your visual cortex contain no color information at all. They are just electrical pulses. Your brain assigns color. It is not reading a label on the world. It is authoring one.
The three types of cone cells in your eye are encoded by genes, and those genes vary from person to person. Small mutations shift the peak sensitivity of a cone by just a few nanometers, but a few nanometers is enough to change what your brain receives, enough to change what red looks like from the inside.
Researcher Gabriele Jordan at Newcastle University spent over 20 years studying tetrachromacy. Most humans have three cone types, but some people carry four.
Jordan found a woman who appeared to have a genuinely functional fourth cone type. She could perceive distinctions in color completely invisible to the rest of humanity.
Colors that do not exist for you or anyone you have ever met. But the question cuts deeper than genetics. Even if two people have identical cone cells and identical genes, they still might not see the same thing because the final stage of color vision happens in the brain and no two brains are identical.
Your visual cortex is shaped by everything that has ever happened to you. Every hour outdoors, every screen, every illness, every year of aging slowly shifting your lens toward yellow.
The wiring that produces your experience of color was built by your entire life.
No one else has lived it. Language does not solve this. It hides the problem.
When you were 2 years old, someone pointed at a tomato and said red. Your brain locked that label onto whatever experience you were having. The person who taught you did the same with their own private experience. The word matches, the experience underneath it might not.
Jules Davidoff at Goldsmiths University studied the Himba people of Namibia.
They could rapidly detect color differences nearly invisible to Western subjects because their language draws category boundaries in different places on the color spectrum.

Every step varies between individuals.
There is not one point where you can compare notes with another mind and confirm the output is the same. The stop sign you see and the stop sign your friend sees both make you stop. The word red connects you. You function together without any problem. But what it feels like to see that red is sealed inside you. It always has been. You have spent your entire life inside one pair of eyes. One brain, one version of color.
And you called it reality. But it was always something more specific than that. It was always yours. Look around you again. The colors are exactly the same as they were 3 minutes ago. And also, they are entirely different from anything anyone else might be seeing right now. Both of those things are true at the same time.
