Stay until the end because the greatest quality of a marathon pigeon cannot be seen in the wing, the eye, or even the pedigree.
Imagine a pigeon flying in a difficult marathon race. It has already been in the air for many hours. The temperature is changing. The wind is difficult, and the original group has started to break apart. Some pigeons take the wrong direction, others become tired and stop.
At this stage, the race is no longer only about speed. It becomes a battle of energy management. The winner is often not the pigeon with the biggest muscles.
It is the pigeon that wastes the least energy. A small pigeon normally has less body weight to carry through the air. It may need less total power to remain in flight than a heavier pigeon. And recovery is one of the most important secrets in marathon racing. After a difficult race, the pigeon may have empty energy reserves, damaged muscles, dehydration, and a weakened immune system. Sending it again too quickly can destroy a valuable pigeon. Some successful marathon fanciers give their birds two or three weeks between major races. They do not follow the calendar blindly. They follow the condition of the pigeon. Has its body weight returned? Are the breast muscles full again? Is it exercising naturally? Is the appetite normal? Are the droppings healthy? Has its motivation returned? The pigeon should only return to the basket when it is completely recovered. Health is equally important, especially for a small pigeon. A respiratory problem, digestive infection, parasites, or dehydration can quickly reduce its performance. A pigeon cannot use oxygen efficiently if its respiratory system is damaged. It cannot use food correctly if its intestines are unhealthy. Good ventilation, a dry loft, quality food, clean water, controlled medication, and regular observation are more valuable than any miracle product.
Genetics also play a major role.
Marathon ability does not come from one special gene. It is created by many qualities working together: endurance, navigation, muscle efficiency, feather quality, recovery, intelligence, and resistance to stress. This is why the family is more important than appearance alone. When evaluating a small pigeon, study its parents, grandparents, brothers, and sisters. Did the family perform in long and difficult races? Did they return consistently? Could they compete for several seasons? Did they recover well? Did they produce other successful pigeons? One result may be luck. Repeated results inside the same family show greater genetic value. You should also study the difficulty of the races. A fast 700 km race with a tailwind is not the same as a hard 1000 km race with headwinds, heat, and a second day of flight. Do not look only at the distance. Study the hours in the air, the weather, the return percentage, and the real difficulty of the race. And now we come to the most important quality, the one that cannot be seen in the hand, mental strength. When pigeons are flying inside a large group, many of them can continue. But after many hours, the group separates. The pigeon becomes tired, the route becomes difficult, and home is still far [snorts] away. At this moment, some pigeons stop. Some follow the wrong birds. Others lose confidence.
But the true marathon pigeon continues.
It remains focused on home. It adjusts its direction, manages its energy, and refuses to give up. You cannot measure this quality by opening the wing. You cannot confirm it by studying the eye.
You cannot find it only in the pedigree.
