Why Do We Eat Crabs But Fear Spiders?
Added:Here's a spider, eight legs, too many joints, moving in a way that makes something in your chest tighten.
Now start changing it. Thicken the legs, harden the shell, add a pair of claws at the front, scale the whole thing up until it's the size of a dinner plate, and give it a coat of orange.
You haven't invented a new animal.
You've built a crab.
And that's not a visual trick.
It's an accurate description of how closely related these two things are.
Same phylum, same body plan, exoskeleton instead of an internal skeleton, jointed legs, segmented body, blue blood instead of red.
Both are arthropods, both running on a blueprint that was already ancient before the first dinosaur showed up. One of them arrives at a table with melted butter and a bib.
The other one puts a grown adult on top of a kitchen chair.
Nothing about the animals explains that.
The first thing people reach for is size.
Spiders are small, crabs are big, and maybe the brain simply doesn't file something the size of a coin as food.
It's a reasonable guess, and it falls apart in about 4 seconds.
A king crab spans nearly 6 ft from claw tip to claw tip.
A Goliath birdeater, a spider, grows to the width of a dinner plate, and as advertised, eats birds.
Nobody has ever looked at a Goliath birdeater and thought appetizer.
Nobody has ever backed away from a hermit crab. Size isn't doing the work.
The second guess is danger.
Spiders bite, crabs don't, so maybe the fear is just correct.
That one collapses even faster.
The overwhelming majority of spiders a person will encounter in their entire life are harmless.
The daddy long legs living in the corner of your basement could not injure you if it committed its life to the attempt.
Meanwhile, a large crab claw generates enough force to break a finger.
If the reaction were tracking actual physical risk, it's pointed at the wrong animal and pointed there with complete confidence.
The clearest evidence that this has nothing to do with the animal comes from a creature that switched sides entirely within living memory without evolving at all.
For most of early American history, lobster was not a luxury.
It was what the storms left behind.
Colonial records from Massachusetts describe it washing ashore in piles large enough to be plowed into fields as fertilizer.
It was fed to prisoners, servants, and the poor.
And there are accounts of people being embarrassed to be seen eating it because of how it looked.
Too many legs.
Too many antennae.
A tail that curled like something from a nightmare.
It read as a large marine insect and people treated it accordingly.
Then, in the second half of the 1800s, the railways arrived.
Lobster could be shipped inland to cities that had never seen one where restaurants sold it as something rare and exotic.
Within two generations, the exact same animal became the most expensive item on the menu.
The lobster didn't change.
Not one gene.
The story people told about it did. So, culture is clearly involved and it goes further than lobster.
In Skuon, Cambodia, deep-fried tarantulas are ordinary street food sold whole by the dozen, legs and all.
In parts of China, scorpions are skewered and grilled the same way you'd grill a prawn.
Somewhere on the planet right now, a child is eating an arachnid with no more hesitation than you'd have with a chicken wing.
The line between food and horror isn't fixed.
It's drawn in a different place depending on where you happen to be raised. But, culture only decides which side of the line an animal lands on.
It doesn't explain why the same handful of shapes keep getting nominated for the fear side over and over in cultures that have nothing else in common.
In the early 2000s, a Swedish psychologist named Anna Erman working out of the Karolinska Institute tested this directly.
He showed people grids of images and measured how long it took them to find a specific target.
A spider hidden among flowers or a flower hidden among spiders.
People located the spider faster consistently.
And critically, the effect held even when the image was flashed too briefly for conscious recognition to occur.
Erman described this as a fear module.
A system that flags certain shapes and motion patterns before conscious thought has arrived.
Not a judgment, a tripwire.
Around the same period, psychologist Susan Mineka ran a different version of the question using rhesus macaques raised entirely in laboratories.
Animals that had never encountered a snake or a spider in their lives.
She showed them footage of another monkey reacting with fear to a snake.
A single exposure was enough.
The fear installed almost immediately and it held.
Then she ran the identical experiment with flowers.
Same terrified monkey, same setup, same single viewing.
It didn't take.
The fear refused to attach. Her conclusion was that evolution hadn't simply given animals the general capacity to learn fear.
It had preloaded a short list of things that could be learned almost instantly and made everything outside that list stubbornly difficult to fear.
No matter how hard you try to teach it.
Spiders and snakes are on the list.
Crabs never made it and this isn't something absorbed from anxious parents.
Vanessa LoBue, a developmental psychologist at Rutgers, ran studies with infants under a year old showing them spider images mixed in with neutral shapes.
The babies fixated on the spiders longer.
Before they had language, before anyone had told them anything about danger at all.
Whatever the system is, it's installed before the child has any concept of what it's reacting to.
So, what exactly is the tripwire reading? Not the legs and not the eyes.
The motion.

It can sit motionless for 20 minutes and then launch sideways, backwards, or straight up a vertical wall with no warning and no windup.
Multidirectional, unpredictable, and capable of changing course towards you.
To an old threat detection system, that reads as one specific thing.
Something that might be tracking you as closely as you're tracking it.
Now, watch your crab. Sideways? Yes.
But rhythmically.
Scuttle, pause, scuttle, pause, metronomic.
There's no lunge no sudden vector change in your direction. To the same system, that isn't a predator.
That's scenery.
Which is why a completely stationary spider still feels threatening.
And a crab waving two genuinely dangerous claws at your face somehow reads as funny. There's also a second reaction working underneath the fear.
And it isn't fear at all.
It's disgust.
Paul Rozin, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania who spent decades on the subject, found that disgust isn't really about danger.
It's about contamination.
Its function is keeping you away from rot, disease, and decay.
And a large portion of what people call arachnophobia is disgust wearing fear's clothing.
The dry, papery legs, the corners and dust and undisturbed spaces, the dead flies wrapped in silk and left hanging.
Crabs bypass that system entirely, mostly on context.
Clean salt water, iced at a market.
For most people, the first crab they ever saw up close was already being served to them.
The brain never opened a threat file because the first entry was food.
Once you know the mechanism, the same swap turns up everywhere.
A slug is essentially a snail that lost its shell.
Same soft body, same slime trail, same animal underneath.
In France, snails are boiled in garlic butter and served as a starter.
Slugs get salted on site in the garden.
Remove one visual cue and the brain quietly reclassifies the identical creature from delicacy to pest.
Octopus and squid are soft, tentacled, and genuinely alien-looking and they're staples from Spain to Japan.
A house centipede empties a room on nothing but speed and leg count.
Eels get smoked and served over rice.
Leeches produce pure horror.
In almost every one of these cases, the actual risk the animal poses has nothing to do with the reaction it receives.
What decides the verdict is shape, motion, and whichever story a culture happened to tell first. And that's the part worth sitting with.
You never actually made any of these decisions.
You didn't examine a crab and clear it.
You didn't evaluate a spider and convict it.
An older, faster part of your brain filed both verdicts long before you had any say using rules written for a world that stopped existing tens of thousands of years ago.
And then handed you the conclusion as though it were your own opinion.
You're not afraid of spiders.
You're afraid of a shape your ancestors couldn't afford to ignore.
The spider just happens to still be wearing it.
