Added:You probably walked past something like it once. A rusted metal tool shed sitting at the back of a lot that nobody owned anymore.
The kind of thing that looks like it's been slowly collapsing for a decade. The paint oxidized into orange streaks. The door panel warped off-center.
Maybe one wall had a long horizontal crease where something heavy hit it a long time ago.
You probably didn't look at it twice.
Nikolai Muro did. He stood in front of that shed for about 4 minutes in late October of 2022. Didn't touch it yet.
Just looked at it from the sidewalk on the far side of the chain-link fence on Kishwaukee Street in Rockford, Illinois.
Noticed the way the afternoon light went flat against the south-facing wall.

His exact words were something like a tin can. The man was going to live in a tin can.
He shook his head when he said it.

The kind of work you do on bridges, water towers, industrial tanks, things that have to hold up against weather and time. He'd sandblasted rust off structures more times than he could count. He knew what rust on the surface meant and what it didn't mean. The parcel had belonged to a machinist named Errol Bean who died in March 2021, leaving three grown children in different states and no will. Nothing was going to happen to that lot for a long time.
He had time to work. The first morning inside the shed, he didn't sleep. Steel has a low emissivity rating for thermal radiation, meaning it doesn't radiate heat outward as aggressively as materials like brick or concrete.
The oxidized surface, counter-intuitively, had a slightly higher emissivity than bare polished metal, but the mass of those walls still retained heat differently than wood or masonry.
More critically, the shed had a south-facing double door with no obstruction in front of it. South-facing exposure in an Illinois winter means passive solar gain on every clear day.
The sun hits that metal wall and the metal absorbs it. The metal holds it longer than a wood wall would.
At night it radiates it back into the interior space.

A painted dark tank sitting in a southern exposure could hold a temperature differential of 12 to 15° above ambient even with no heat source, just from what the walls had absorbed during daylight hours. This wasn't a dark painted tank, but it was a start.

Marcus looked at him blankly and said, "13°?
Man, it's still freezing in there." He wasn't wrong.
13° when it's 31 outside gets you to 44.
44 is survivable with a sleeping bag rated to 15°.
It's not comfortable. It's not what you'd call warm. And Nikolai knew that by January, when Rockford's over my lows drop into the single digits and the wind comes off the flat farmland to the west, 13° of differential was going to feel inadequate.
He had roughly 7 weeks. The next problem he understood as a coatings man, surface area and contact. In his former trade, one of the core principles of surface preparation was understanding where heat and cold were actually moving. Not just that they moved from warm to cold, everybody knows that, but specifically how they moved.
Conduction, convection, radiation.
Each one moves heat in a different way and requires a different response.
Conduction was the one he thought about most those first weeks. Every surface his body touched at night was conducting heat away from him.
The foam rubber mat helped, but it was thin and compressing further every night under his weight.
The cold from the concrete slab was coming up through it. He knew the floor was a bigger problem than most people would guess.
Ground contact pulls heat away from a sleeping body significantly faster than cold air does because concrete conducts heat roughly 25 times more efficiently than still air. You can be in a room that's 60° and lose heat faster through the floor than through the surrounding air.
He found a wooden pallet behind a restaurant on Auburn Street. Just one.
A standard 40 by 48 inch pine pallet and carried it in two trips to the shed, setting it on the south wall side of the floor.
Then he found two more behind a grocery store on Wellworth Avenue and stacked all three. Three pallets, about 5 in of pine and air between his sleeping surface and the concrete floor.
He topped them with the foam rubber mat and a sleeping bag. The next night, outside temperature 24°, inside 40°.
Differential, 16°.
He wrote it down.
That's how Nikolai worked. Everything went in the notebook. He was recording an experiment in progress and he treated it like one.

He brought it home. December 21st, 2022, winter solstice, the longest night of the year. A low rhythmic sound, not alarming, just present.
The kind of sound a structure makes when it's holding.
Nikolai had burned the Mr. Heater for 2 hours that evening from 7:00 until 9:00.
He'd sealed every surface he could think of, the foam board walls, the blanket roof, the door seal. He'd run the catalytic heater propped on a scrap of foam away from the pallet allowing the warm air to convect upward and distribute through the space before it cooled and fell back down. Asked what he'd used. Nikolai told him the foam board between the panels and the interior framing had added contact, reduced flex, accidentally stiffened the wall against wind loading. He hadn't planned it that way. It was a byproduct.

You can tell because in winter, the breath fog that accumulates against the cold door panels doesn't drift when the doors are closed. The note is still there, inside on the cardboard, written in black marker. The ink has faded a little.
