Algae are diverse photosynthetic thalloid organisms lacking true roots, stems, and leaves, containing chlorophyll a and other pigments for photosynthesis. They are distributed across aquatic environments (freshwater and marine), moist terrestrial habitats, and symbiotic relationships with fungi, animals, and plants. Morphologically, algae range from unicellular (Chlamydomonas, Chlorella) to colonial (Volvox) and filamentous (Spirogyra, Ulothrix) forms. Classification is primarily based on pigmentation: Chlorophyceae (green algae with chlorophyll a and b), Phaeophyceae (brown algae with chlorophyll a and fucoxanthin), Rhodophyceae (red algae with chlorophyll a, d, and phycocyanin), and Xanthophyceae (golden algae). Reproduction occurs vegetatively through fragmentation, fission, and spore formation, and sexually through isogamy, oogamy, and anisogamy. Economically, algae serve as food sources (seaweeds rich in proteins, vitamins, and iodine), industrial products (agar, carageenan, alginic acid), biofertilizers (blue-green algae fix nitrogen), biofuels, medicinal compounds (antiviral, antibacterial, anticoagulant), and oxygen producers. However, harmful algal blooms can produce toxins causing fish kills and water pollution.
