Seller Said This 2-Stroke Dirt Bike Won't Run or Shift (HUGE RISK)
Added:Well, I definitely took a risk buying this bike. Supposedly, this is a 2012 Yamaha YZ85, and it currently doesn't run or shift.
So, the seller stated that he bought this bike in non-running condition, and I guess he tore it down and rebuilt the top end and went through the bottom end with his dad.
And uh I guess they must have put something back incorrectly or installed something wrong because they said they got back together and they said wouldn't shift and they actually got to start up for a little bit they said but then the top end bearing went out and I guess there's metal chunks everywhere. So they cleaned that out and it still wouldn't shift. So they decided to sell it on Facebook for $1,300.
And I end up paying $1,300 for this bike. I paid full price. We figured why not give them full price for the bike.
And none of these bikes on Facebook are going under $2,000. So, we still have some room to work with here. So, today's goal is going to be to get this bike up running and driving by the end of the video. I already ordered up some parts for it. So, we have some parts. And what we're going to do is see why this bike doesn't run and why it's not shifting.
He said it only shifts in the first gear and that's it. So, we'll see. When we got the bike, the flywheel was off of it, the nut was off of it, holding the flywheel on, and the washer was off of it. So, I don't know if they had an issue with the flywheel or what, but I put that back on quick. Um, we're going to have to find a nut for it. But what we're going to do first is probably try to get this thing to run and then we'll investigate the shifting issue. But, as you can see, it's not a horrible looking bike. I did order up a seat cover for it and a couple other parts.
But it has a good base. The engine looks decent on it. So, we'll see what's going on with it. And hopefully we can get this one figured out. But let's get this thing out the trailer and we'll start digging into it. This one should be interesting. It was definitely a risk.

All right, little walk around of this thing. As you can see, it doesn't look too bad. I noticed the rear tire is pretty worn down. A lot of sludge coming out of the pipe here. So, I don't know if it was running really rich or there's something wrong with the top end, but that was really oily.
You can see it goes all the way down the pipe and then on the on the swing arm there. So, it was dripping oil.
No dents in the pipe at all. Little rust forming, but not too bad. Graphics are a little scraped up here. Little rip in the seat here.
Looks like the cover here is wrong for it. I think this is for a square one.
So, I just threw that on there. This isn't connected.
Looks like maybe the clutch had some issues. This was off of here. They were adjusting that the flywheel and the cover and the nut was off of it. When I bought the bike, I just threw that back on so I wouldn't lose the parts. Does have the original key in car, which is good.
Chain doesn't look horrible. Sprockets are a little worn, so it definitely needs some work. I definitely think I overpaid, you know, paying 1,300 bucks for this thing, but these bikes sell for over $2,000 in my area. So, if it is in fact a 2012, let's quick check.

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9. So, C. Let's go to the chart and see. All right, coming to the chart here. These are available on the website. We're going to find C. So, obviously, it's not a 1982. We'll go to the next C. And thank God it is a 2012.
So, it is a newer year. So, that's the first look of the bike here. I think what we're going to do is get this bike into the garage, start diagnosing it, and see if we can get this thing to run. And then we'll focus on the shifting. We'll at least see if this thing runs before we start digging into it. And the shifting issue could be a bunch of different things. Could be the the shift shaft, could be something with the clutch area, could be the shifter star, could be the shift drum, the forks, the transmission. Could be a bunch of different issues. So, we'll dig into it, see what we find. But the seller did say they kind of rushed the rebuild, and they think it might be the shift forks that they installed incorrectly. We'll see.
Well, we got this bike into the garage.
Let's start tearing into it. See what's going on. So, the first thing we're going to do is check the oil. The seller said that he recently drained the oil.
Not quite sure why.
Let's just see if there's anything in there and what that looks like.
Hopefully there's no metal chunks in the bottom end. I know he said that top end bearing went I think he replaced it though, so it does turn over.
Feels like it has decent compression, too.
So, hopefully that means they replace the top end bearing. Uh, I guess we'll find out. But let's check out that oil.
All right. All right. I have a feeling the oil is going to be milky. Let's like here.
Is there anything left in there?
It looks pretty clear what's left in there, but I'm pretty sure it's drained all the way out. I'm guessing to clean out Oh, yeah. That's completely loose. So, that looks like it's not the check bolt. That is actually the drain plug.
And not a single drop of oil's coming out of there.
So, that goes all the way through.
That's really odd.
Is there a check bolt on here or a window or anything?
Doesn't look like it. So, there's absolutely zero oil in here.
Let's see if there's any coolant. I wonder if he drained that, too.
So, I'm guessing they were going to maybe drain the oil because they were going to tear into the bottom end to see why it wasn't shifting.
That's the most logical explanation for the drained oil, I would think.
I don't know. All right, let's check that coolant.
All right, let's see if there's anything in here.
All right, coolant is topped off. But if you look in there closely, let's see if I can zoom in. It looks like there's oil mixing with the coolant.
See if you guys can see that cloudiness in there.
A little bit thicker at the top there.
Look at all that oil coming up.
So, it doesn't look the greatest. Let's quick drain that.
And then just take a peek. All right.
Drain bolt for the coolant. It's going to be right here. Really big crush washer on there.
We will drain that out into a bucket and see what that looks like. Already off of it. So, let's see.
Shooting out.
H. It doesn't look horrible, but it's good to flush it one more time if you see that much oil in it.
So, these bolts go all the way through for the oil change and the coolant.
All right, we'll get that out of there.
Let that drain for a little bit and then we can move on from there.
What I'm most concerned about is why the top end bearing would go.
Was it running lean? Was it getting hot?
Was it not cooling?
We'll have to investigate. So, let's take a look at the gas next. Make sure that was mixed properly. Usually with like an 85cc bike, two-stroke, you want to mix it 40 to one. That's typically what I run um in every bike. So, let's just see what that mixture looks like.
See if it was mixed heavy enough. All right, we're taking this off right away. Throw that out.
See if there's any gas in here.

And it looks like they were running mixed fuel.

So, that was all that was in there, though.

So, at least we confirmed it was running oil, gas, and mix. So, I don't think that was a problem while that top end bearing went. Let's go ahead and check the air filter next. See what's going on with that.

It's not oiled up, doesn't look like, but looks pretty new.
So, that's nice and tight on there. No issues with that. We'll have to oil that up a little bit better. Yeah, I'm not getting any oil on my hands here. So, yeah, at least there's one in there.
That's great. So, I don't think that was a problem either as to why the top end bearing went. I wonder if it was just like a installation error or if the bearing was bad before and they just reused it. Maybe something along those lines. But yeah, air filter in there.
Gas looked good. Let's get this gas tank off of here.

Let's take a peek in here.
All right. This thing has a huge CDI for such a small bike.
Coil right there. I'm sure they didn't touch any of this before. So, I'm guessing all of this is good to go. Let's see. Yeah, coil ground looks good. Wire going to the coil is tight.
Now, we're checking around the head for any leaking, too. Just looking for any coolant leaks here. Not seeing anything.
Stater wires coming through. Look clean.
Not overly taped. It doesn't look like there's any repairs there. So, I'm guessing no issues with spark or anything. We'll have to see.
But we are going to take off the cover here and try to repair the flywheel area. So, the crankshaft actually is stripped out where the flywheel bolt goes onto. We're going to have to clean up those threads a little bit and see if we can get a nut on there to lock down that flywheel.
But, uh, I think before that, let's just see what it does shifting here. All right, let's see what it does through the gears here. So, we're in neutral there. Let's shift down. They said first gear does work. Oh, yeah. Look at that.
Look at how that's shifting. Ooh, it's getting stuck down like that.
It's really hard to shift.
It's like really stiff.
There's first gear.
Yeah.
Oh, that sound That's really bad.
That's really bad.
That is not looking good. Look at that.
When you shift down, it just stays down.
Oh boy. That is really, really bad.
So, something's completely wrong in there.
Oh boy.
Hopefully that didn't all get wrecked inside the transmission area.
I guess we'll find out here. All right.
So, like I said before, the whole cover was off and I bought it. The flywheel was off and then I could see that the threads were were stripped out on the crankshaft here. So, let's go ahead get this cover back off and take a look. See if we can clean up those threads enough to get that flywheel on. So, this cover we can take off. Again, it looks like the flywheel nut was missing.
I'm guessing they stripped it out trying to crank it onto the crankshaft.
All right, cover coming off.
All right, so I just loosely had this on. I guess we did have the washer for it, but this should pull right off of here.
missing the wood drift key as well.
So, I'll have to find one of those.
But if you look in here, you can see there's a bunch of metal metallic flakes in here, which is not great. Look by the pickup coil.
These are all metal flakes in here.
So, we're hoping that's from the stripped out threads here.
I don't know. But what we're going to do is take off the stator plate.
And uh we're going to take a look at that crank seal. See if that's leaking and see what else we can see behind here.
It looks like they didn't have the line here. If you guys can see, there's a line up here. Isn't perfectly lined up with the line up there.
You can see it's a little bit off. So, I'm guessing it didn't run great.
See, it should be in line perfectly with that notch on the case. And it's about a millimeter off.
So, we'll fix that, too.
Try to get this stator off of here.
Looks like the bolts are kind of stripped out.
Oh, those are definitely on there.
Torque those down.
Oh man, this one looks stripped out. Yeah, that one doesn't look good.
Oh boy, that one's completely stripped. This one's not coming out. It's on there so tight. So, we're going to have to take a screwdriver, see if we can budge this one. Maybe cut that one out and then uh take an impact and get that. I really like using the impact on the stator plate cuz that can break pretty easily.
But if it's not coming out, it's not coming out. We don't have many many options here. So, let's just see if we can gently tap it, make that come out.
Nope. Holy cow.

There we go. I pounded pretty hard on that thing.
All right, that one came. All right, one hammer whack on the bolt and she came off of here. So, that was lucky. Didn't have to drill that out.
Here's the stator.
See if that's damaged at all. You can see all the metallic flakes down in there. This is a magnet, so it's going to stick to that.
I'm not seeing any damage yet.
See the back side?
No, it doesn't look too bad.

All right. So, this line right here line up with the line right on the case here. See right? You can see it right here. So, that wasn't lined up perfectly. Let's take a peek at the crank seal. See if there's any leaking coming from there. Get the Let's see if they put a new crank seal in.
I'm not seeing any leaking.
So, that should be fine. That's good.
But if you look at the threads here, pretty stripped out.
See if I can zoom in here. See how stripped out those are?
So, we have to fix that to get a nut on there. Otherwise, we'll never get that flywheel to stay.
So, let's try to clean those up a bit.
See if we can get something to to latch onto there. Otherwise, we we probably need to go down a size or possibly get a new crank at this point.
All right. So, we're trying to clean up those threads.
And as of right now, you get this on here.
And it's just spinning the shaft even in first gear. So, we're going to have to probably take out the plug and see if we can get something down there to stop the piston from raising is I think the only option there. All right. Plug coming out.
Look at the boot here quick.
Since we have that off.

All right, let's chop that back a little bit. Get that back on. Plug that one there.
That's some good exposed wire. get her boot back on here.
All right. Now, we put that off to the side and we'll try to get that plug out of here.

Nothing too crazy. So, what we're going to do is probably put like a cotton rag down here. String that down here. And that way when we turn the crank, the piston will get stuck between the rag and the head and cause that crank not to move. That's our hope.
All right. Got this long piece of cotton from one of my shirts. We're gonna just push that down into a spark plug hole.
So then we can take it back out if we have to.
And hopefully it bunches up enough to get between the piston and the head.
Let's see.
We'll just leave enough of the cotton to pull out.

Oh yeah, it's working.
Really, it's just the first couple threads that are messed up.
All right, we've got a nut on there and it's actually twisting onto the threads now. Just trying to clean them up with a correct size bolt here.
I'll go backwards. See if it'll come off.

All right. Now, let's see if our nut fits on there. So, here's the nut.
That's supposed to fit on. Let's see.
Let's see if that'll crank on there.

So, we're going to line up this line with the line right here on the case.
That has to be lined up perfectly.

Now the flywheel going on. Line that up with the woodruff key.

Get a washer on there. We should have plenty of threads left for that nut to go on.

Yeah, I want to stuff that back with cotton so we can actually crank that down with the ratchet and not the impact. I didn't want to strip those threads out anymore.
Slowly tighten it till those threads grab good.
Wheel's still a little loose in there.
It's going good now.
Okay, that's as tight as we can get her. Yep, it's really tight. All right, now we can take the cotton out of here. Pull these out.
Now we have a flywheel that's attached.
That nut is on there really good. So, that's not stripped out at all. Perfect.
That worked. All right, let's see if we have spark now. All right, let's see what we get here.
Let's just see if we have any type of spark here. Here we go. Kick her over.
See what happens. Oh, yeah. Good spark.

All right, so we have great spark. Let's take a camera, take a peek down the cylinder, and then when I test compression, see if there's enough to fire this thing up. Hopefully, it's not too bad.

This crosshatch is on the cylinder wall.
Piston looks a little dinged up, doesn't it?
Looks like a bunch of little metal flakes on the piston. Looks like a bunch of little dings.

H. Hard to tell, but it looks like there's a couple metallic flakes on top of the piston.

It's hard to tell if that's just a reflection from the head or what's going on. Little PB Blaster in there will help, I think.

Maybe it cleaned off that piston, but uh it's definitely smooth. No knocking, no crunching. Doesn't get held up at all.
So, I think the rod bearing should be fine. Take one more peek here.
So, it could just be damage from that top and bearing that let go and maybe they cleaned it all up and put it back together like that and just kept the piston in there like that. Maybe.
Yeah, it's still on there. So, those are actually like little dings on the piston. Otherwise, that would all be cleaned up.
So, that got dinged up pretty good.

All those little divots in the piston.

Yeah, those are all little dings. Had to have been from the top and bearing.
So, they must have fixed that problem.

I have a feeling this is kind of low.

You know, I I don't know. This is kind of a mystery going into it. All right, let's see what we got here.

I'm sure they cleaned it out, but I want to check the jetting. Make sure that's correct. Because I'm still worried about that top and bearing. Why did that go on it?

Assuming it turns out, we are one.
So, one and a half.
Should be a spring in there. Perfect.
So, that all looks good. The carb is really clean. We don't even need the ultrasonic cleaner for that. We're just going to blow it out with compressed air, a little brake cleaner, and we should be good to go. All right, we got the carb cleaned out and I checked the jetting. Looks like jetting is spot on.
138 for the main is stock and then 45 for the pilot stock. So, carburetor should be perfect. All right, another possibility is that there was a bad air leak at the boot here. So, let's take off the boot, check that out, and see if there's any issues with that. That could have caused this bike to run lean and could have chewed up that top end.
Looks like stock reads.
Last one.
Let's take a peek at the boot. A lot of times these bikes have cracks and breaks in the boot here. Oh, yeah. This one was repaired.
Oh, that could be the problem right there. A big crack in there. Is that coming all the way through?
I think it might be.
Let me take a peek.
Yeah, that comes all the way through.
There's actually a crack right there.
You can see when you spread that apart that goes all the way through there. So, air was getting through there for sure.
I don't know if you guys can see that little crack there.
Hopefully you can zoom in and see that.
That opens up right there in in line with that crack. So that boot I think is allowing air in. Let's check out the reads.
Is there a gasket there? Yep. A little bit.
Definitely stock reads. They look good.

What we might end up doing is just putting a little gasket maker on the back side of this.
I sometimes don't trust that rubber gasket here.
I mean, this is a pretty old bike. All right, we ordered up a new boot on Amazon.

All right. So, we've got gas going to the car. Doesn't appear to be leaking yet.

No oil leaking yet. So, so far we're good to go. We'll see when we do the first start here. But we have compression. We have spark. We have fuel going to the car. We placed the boot.
So, that doesn't have any cracks anymore. So, no air leaks. And then we cleaned up the car. So, we should be good. Let's do the first start attempt and see if she fires up here. All right.

Yeah, this thing runs awesome. First gear runs perfectly. You shift up into second, it goes right to neutral. So, it's definitely missing all the other gears. So, I'm guessing either the shift forks were put in the wrong position and it's just not shifting through the gears or there's something going on with that shifting star or the shift pattern with that star. Maybe it's not clicking all the way in. Could be a bent shift shaft as well, just not shifting properly. So, we're going to investigate and see if we can figure this out. Hopefully, we don't have to tear apart the whole engine, but if we do, this engine's pretty simple, so it shouldn't be too bad. Check the oil. Make sure that's not milky right away. I'm not seeing any leaking oil from anywhere actually. Oil looks like here. Who thinks it's going to be milky?

Ah, I see why that snapped right off in there. That bolt did.
That's why we didn't have one in there.
Here's a washer. Goes on the back side of the clutch.
And then another washer right there went on.
All right, let's see what's going on with the shifting.
Oh, that's a bummer. It's an all-in-one shift drum. Oh, I see.
Okay, I see a problem right there. Look at that.
See that right there? That should be riding inside that star.
It is not. I think that's bent.

That would be extremely lucky if it was.
So, let's go ahead and take that off and see if we can bend that so it goes right on top of that star. Right now, I think it's pinching that star tight in there.
And that's why it was so hard to shift.
All right. So, we have a little hope here. Let's just pull this out.

See? All right, we got this off. Let's see. Pull that through. There we go.

Is that bent? A shift shaft.
That's definitely bent in there.

All right, I bent that shaft a little bit. Took it in the vise and pounded that. It bent pretty easily. And now you can see it's riding inside the star there. So, everything is good to go.

So, neutral is right there and it's not going in a second. See that?
So, something's going on with the shift forks. There's first.
That should be second. There. There's neutral. It's not shifting past that next gear.
She's stuck.
Yeah, it doesn't shift that way at all.
Shoot.
Well, I guess we'll start tearing it down. All right, let's get the pipe off first here.
Silencer coming off there.
There we go.
Pipe should come off.
There we go. Pipe is off.
Then we can check out that piston at least too and see what that looks like and why that was all dinged up.
Get these springs off here.
That's off.
Carbs off.
Let's quick take the kickstart mechanism out too before we lose that.
That looks good.
Let's get the head off of here.
Those were definitely torqued down.
So, they did a pretty decent job rebuilding it. It's just the shifting issue.
I can't imagine they put the shift forks in wrong.
Wonder if the shift drum is just really worn out or something.
All right, get those off.
Has all the crush washers underneath there. Those all look good.
Oh, those O-rings are pretty shot. Holy cow, those are bad.
Look at that. The head is a little dinged up, too.
So, whatever was hitting the piston was hitting the head, too. Check these out.
I cannot believe that was not failing.
Huh. Looks like they got really hot.
Like, they're all melted on the sides.
Yeah, that's pretty bad.
This one's not too bad. Still a little bit melted.

Lots of little dings on it.
Cylinder looks pretty good, though.
Yeah, those were torqued down pretty good.
Like I said, everything seems like it was torqued. Let's see what that looks like.
Why that's getting hung up so bad there.

Hopefully the rod's still good. Let's see.

Piston isn't horrible.
A little ding here and there, but not bad. So, we can get the piston off and get this engine out.
All right, piston coming off of here.
See what the top end bearing feels like.
Oh, yeah. That's new.
That feels good.
There's the piston. Holes are drilled for it, too. Looks good.
All right. Well, doesn't look too bad in there. Rod, no up and down play. It's a little side to side. So, that looks good. Perfect nut hopefully coming off here.
There's the washer.
This is coming right out, which is good.
Those need a little bit of grease on them, I think.
Tiny little engine. Yep. Perfect.
There we go.
All right. Engine is out of the frame.
Finally. That didn't take that long.
All right, let's tear this thing down.
See what's going on.
All right, what are we looking at here?
Shift shaft mechanism.
We saw before we took that out. That can come out of here.
That was in good shape. Springs are not broken or anything.
Yep.
A normal nut there.
Take this guy off.
This gear can come off.
The pin.
Doesn't matter which way that one goes.
Should be a little collar in there. Yep.
All right, that's out. Looking good.
Those out.
boot reads with the impact.
Yeah, it's not stripped. That's good.
Hopefully comes right off of here.
Wood drift key still in there. We'll weave that in. Flywheel.
Oh man.
stator coming on. So, this is the the tough part. I'm sure these are all torqued down, too.
Unfortunately, they're not the upgrade bolts. We're going to have to get our impact out for all those. All right. Had to drill out a bunch of these screws, but we finally got all of them out. So, let's just see if this thing cracks open here.
Looks like it's glued down pretty tight.

Are the shift forks wrong?
What could possibly be going on where this doesn't want to shift?
We're going to check the diagram and see if maybe the shift forks are just in there wrong.

I think that's labeled.
We're going to mark it.
So this one the one that's first.
It's almost like that's bent in there.
Okay, let's see.
All right, let's see what we were working with here.
So, here's the shift room.
Looks like it was binding right there.
You can see some metal showing through there.
A little bit right there.
Bearing feels fine.
Shift star is good.
I don't think it's the shift drum.
Here's that shaft right there.
Doesn't appear to be bent.

All right. This is L9. This was on the shaft first.
Feels okay.
Here's the other one.
This is R5. That was in further H. And here's the other one.
That one's not even labeled.
And that was on the small shaft.
to take a peek at the transmission next and see if all those gears look good.
I'm not seeing any issues.
You guys seen anything?
Nothing's rounded off.
Smooth surface in there. The forks ride.
See this one? No teeth missing.
That surface in there looks a little iffy.
Are the dogs look fine that not go up over there?
Well, after looking at the diagram, we found the problem. So, check this out.
So, this transmission is perfect.
You really can't mess that one up.
So, all the gears on there are correct.
This one is where we're having issues.
So, this gear was on here correctly right here. Got the flat to the back, the hollowed out part towards the gears.
Well, this center piece right here, this gear right here was on incorrectly. So, if you look at it, these dogs can't fit into those grooves there from that way.
So, if you spin this one around and go this way with it, look how that fits in there like that.
And then check this out. That goes right in there like that.
So he had this center gear on backwards.
That was on like that. Should have been like this.
So that these fit in there like that. Then the washer goes on. So that was the whole problem.
That's why it was not shifting into second gear. The forks were incorrectly.
So, we've got this one that's not labeled. I looked it up. That is correct for the middle. Um, we've got this one here. It's labeled L9. That's left. That goes on the left side of the the engine. And that was on the left side. We marked that. So, that was correct. And this one says R5.
That's the right. That was on the inside of the engine towards the right side of the bike. And that was correct. So, everything else was installed correctly.
It was not the shift forks. It was the gear that was put on incorrectly the whole time. So, I'm guessing what they did was first put the gears on incorrectly, maybe swap that over, and then it still was doing the same thing.
And that's kind of when they gave up on it is my guess. But, it was the gear the whole time. So, now slides in there nicely both ways.
And that's how that goes on. So, that was the whole problem. That's why it wasn't shifting. So, we have the gasket kit. I already bought that. We've got a seat cover for it and the water pump seals. Now, I was actually going to try to rebuild this whole bike today and get this done in one video, but this video is getting pretty long. I did not expect this bike to fire up today. I did not expect to fix up that stripped out crank as well and have this bike fire up. So, we're a little behind and there's no way we're fitting this whole engine rebuild into one video and getting it back in the bike and taking it for a test drive today. It's already 4:00, so we will have to make a part two on putting this whole thing back together, rebuilding this engine, and taking this bike for the first proper rep. Hopefully, once we change around that gear, put everything in correctly, we should be good to go.
This bike should shift, and we should have a nice running driving bike by the end of next video. That is the goal. So, hopefully you guys enjoy this one. you know, picking this thing up for 1,300 bucks, I paid a lot for it, and it was a huge risk on my end, you know, not knowing what was wrong with it. But it turned out to be a simple problem that won't take a lot of money to fix. So, once we put it all back together, we'll have a nice running, driving, shifting bike for 1,300 bucks. Plus, the gasket kit plus the seat cover. So, we'll have right around like 1,400 bucks into it.
And these bikes sell for over two grand, so not too bad. But, uh, I'll take it.
You know, that's a win in my book. So, all the parts are here. We have to bag these up and, uh, we'll start building this thing next video. Be ripping this thing around soon.
