The scapula (shoulder blade) is a triangular bone located on the posterolateral aspect of the thoracic cage, extending from T2 to T7 vertebrae, with the spinous process at T3 level. It has two surfaces (costal and dorsal), three borders (lateral/axillary, medial/vertebral, superior), three angles (superior, inferior, lateral), and three processes (coracoid, spinous, acromion). The costal surface attaches subscapularis and serratus anterior muscles, while the posterior surface contains the supraspinatus and infraspinatus fossae. The spinous process serves as attachment for trapezius, deltoid, teres minor, and teres major muscles. The coracoid process attaches the short head of biceps brachii, coracobrachialis, and pectoralis minor. The glenoid cavity contains the supraglenoid tubercle (long head of biceps brachii) and infraglenoid tubercle (long head of triceps brachii). The scapula is essential for upper limb movement and is innervated by the long thoracic nerve, with damage potentially causing winged scapula.
