The Shop is PACKED! Two truck get dropped off, a Trans Am AND a Sprint car?

[00:00:00]Welcome back to the channel. The shop is full. We got tons of cars coming in this week. We've got a car we got to add a bar to. Not really a car, but that we've got a Trans Am we got to work on. We got an S10 for a turbo kit. We got an S10 over here we got to do some work, too.

[00:00:58]SO, we got Braden over here reeling up a hose >> for your entertainment. But no, so our neighbors race uh sprint cars. So, we are going to be cutting out this bar right here and we are going to be putting one in that has a little bit more of a bend to it. Um, so we're going to work on getting this thing knocked out today. Um Colin just dropped off this S10. We have done a cage in this before. We've also done a turbo kit on this, but he's changed some stuff up.

[00:01:32]Went with a air to water on top of the intake. So, we're going to be building a turbo kit for this. We're going to be doing some fuel lines, um some other stuff like that. So, this will be a cool one to get some progress made on. Braden got the uh 850 cage knocked out in this third gen in the NH gay comb and certified it. So, she is good to go racing. Um, but the customer wants us to go ahead and cut this trunk area out, and he wants us to put a flat panel in there. And he's also going to do something with the uh the torque arm area. So, he ordered those parts. When those show up, we're going to get that knocked out. So, this is the bar we're going to be putting in u this sprint car. This is a sprint car, right? Is that what they call that?

[00:02:16]>> Yeah. Not sure. I think it's called a sprint car. Anyways, uh so this is the bar we're going to be putting in. and it has just a little bit more bends. It's already been pre-nched and like the notcher they have is like a laser. So, super nice product. Um, but Braden's going to get this bar cut out first and then we're going to clean all it up and kind of stick this thing in there and then they're going to come over the seat going to make sure it's where we want it and then get it welded in. So, let get to work.

[00:02:45][music] >> [music] [music] >> Okay. So, we got the uh seat put in, measured, and everything's good. So, we know where to put this bar at.

[00:03:09]Basically, this bar is just bent down a little bit more. So, if you don't know much about these, um, they have a drive shaft that runs here directly to the rear end. They went ahead and pulled that all that out for us so we'd have easy accessibility to weld this. Um, but if that was to break, it would come up and hit you on the bottom. And so, this bar is essentially there to protect the seat. So, we moved it forward because he wasn't happy where it was at. So, that's the whole point of that. And they've got three other chassis like this for this driver. So, we're probably going to be modifying the other two exactly like this. So, but I'm going to let Braden get to uh doing some welding.

[00:03:49]Get that bar knocked out. [music] [music] [music] >> [music] >> This is Wayne's Trans Am, another customer of ours that we've worked on a lot. Um, we are going to be doing a fuel system on this, but he did some lifters on it and it's got something going on with it drivabilitywise. It doesn't run right. So, I'm going to work on figuring out what's wrong with it drivabilitywise, and then we're going to start putting a fuel system on it. So, we got a bunch of stuff going on in the shop this week. So, only one way to get it done is to get after it. So, let's uh let's get to work. Okay, so we're doing some old school diagnostics on Wayne's car. Uh he put lifters in it and after that it has like a misfire, doesn't run right. So, what I've done is I've checked these cylinders and got our handy dandy little temp gun here.

[00:05:00]So, it's been running not very good, but it's been running for a little little time. So, let me get this ghetto thing going here. Okay. So, that tells you right there that that primary is at 110.

[00:05:13]That primary is at 120. That primary is at 104.

[00:05:18]That primary is at 117. So, they're all north of 100.

[00:05:23]This one is at 89.

[00:05:28]That one's at 105.

[00:05:31]106.

[00:05:33]That one's a little cold, too. So, for sure, we got a dead hole up front. Um, part of the problem was this spark plug wire was throwing a hot dog down the hallway, so it didn't work. But, I put a plug wire in it. Still didn't do it.

[00:05:47]Pulled the plug out. It was wet. Uh, so I put it back in. And so if it's wet, that means it's getting fuel. So now we're down to possibly no spark or there's some other issue going on. Um, so in doing this, I've noticed that this is his fuel pressure gauge and it is broken. Somebody has tried to glue it back together. So he's going to need a new one of those. Um, so we'll end up putting one of those on there. But I'm going to pull this valve cover off and we're going to see if we can see anything. And we got the valve cover off. And the last time we had this vehicle, you'll notice that this one rocker doesn't have a keeper on it like these was because this offset rocker on these LS3 style heads was broke and it destroyed this keeper and some other stuff. So, we ended up just throwing a spring that we had on it and a keeper and got a new rocker arm, but we didn't have the trunion upgrade. So, he never did end up upgrading the trunion on it.

[00:06:38]Not a big deal. So, we know that this cylinder is the one in question.

[00:06:43]cylinder number one. So, I just started looking. Vow spring looks fine. I don't see anything obvious right off the bat.

[00:06:50]But after looking, I found like this one's good. This one's good. This one's good. This one's good. But you'll notice this little guy right here.

[00:07:03]So, our issue is that this valve is up high. That valve is down low. So, it looks like the uh the valve is bent. So, therefore, you're going to have one dead cylinder. If you have one dead cylinder, this thing is not going to do what it wants to do. So, I'm going to relay the news to Wayne and see what he wants to do. We go from there.

[00:07:31]Little update on the Trans Am. So, we figured out what's wrong with Wayne's engine and I told him, I was like, "Hey, we're going to have to pull the head off of it." So, he's going to go ahead and do that. But in the meantime, I have Braden working on the fuel system. He said, "Let's go ahead and knock out the fuel system while it's there." I said, "Cool." So, we got the tank drained. It was completely full.

[00:07:50]>> That's always nice >> to the top. [laughter] >> So, now we're dropping the old tank out.

[00:07:55]So, this is actually a 98. The 98s came with a steel tank, and he went and got a uh complete fuel system from Chris 1313.

[00:08:03]And we are going to be taking out the factory metal tank and putting in a plastic tank cuz he's doing like a hat style fuel system on it. So Braden's working on getting all this to our part and dealing with that. So let me show you what the fuel system looks like. So he went ahead and got a complete tank from Hawk third gen. So we're going to be taking all the evap stuff off there.

[00:08:22]That's not needed. Um but this is the fuel pump setup from Chris 1313. So it's got dual pumps that drop into there. And then it comes with the lines and all the fittings and it comes with like a fuel filter and everything, air motive regulator. So, comes with a hot wire kit. Uh, so we're going to be installing all this stuff on Wayne's Trans Am. So, stay tuned for the progress on that update on Wayne's car. So, we got all the old fuel lines and everything out.

[00:08:50]Um, so Braden is going to make a new bracket to hold this. So, we're just going to like kind of stack it on top of this one over here. So, we'll get the regulator put on and then we'll start plumbing all the fuel lines.

[00:09:05]Um, we went to go take out cuz this is a 98 and a 98 has a steel tank and we're putting a plastic tank in it. So, that created some issues there. Um, over here he used to have his evvap tank. Um, so that ended up coming out of there cuz we don't need that anymore. Uh, and then as we were taking the wheel off to get that out, we noticed that these studs are all messed up. So, I told Wayne, I said, "You need to get some studs like yesterday for this thing." [laughter] So, he's going to work on that. But, we've got pretty much all the wiring done. All we have to do is connect some stuff. Um, the one thing I will say different is one, if you have an Fbody, this drives me willies. Now, that being said, it's already done, but I hate it.

[00:09:51]And I absolutely hate it when this gets cut out on an Fbody. Uh maybe it's just because it's like it's kind of a hack job if you ask me, but it's already done, so whatever. Um this Chris 1313 fuel pump actually is in a different spot than the factory pump. The factory pump was actually up here. So in order to make this clear cuz of this rib right here, we had to cut out more of it. So we had the tank out. So we went ahead and cut out more. So we're going to have to make a new panel for the top of it.

[00:10:22]But it's pretty much wired. We've got all the everything done. It looks nice.

[00:10:25]It's loomed. It's got grommets where it goes through places. It's going to rub on stuff. So, that's good. So, he's going to work on getting the rest of this cleaned up tomorrow. And then we're going to uh finish making the fuel lines and stuff on it tomorrow. But, it's on the downward slope. So, we're doing making good progress on this one. So, so we're back on Sam's Lightning. This is his old 5.4 L engine. It's wore out. We ended up tearing it apart. It had a melted piston. It's seen better days.

[00:10:54]So, the reason we're tearing it all apart is we need parts off of it for his new engine, like the front cover, the valve covers, the heads, things like that. So, it's pretty dirty. So, we're going to spend quite a bit of time cleaning this old dirty thing up so we have a fresh, brand new engine to go in.

[00:12:30][music] >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> All righty, we are back on Sam's 5.4 L for his Lightning. So, I'm trying to get this thing assembled. Um, I'm going to work on the heads today. Um, Braden went ahead and uh mass this off. He had a pretty cool trick and I can admit it. I didn't know didn't know about it. Um, so he went ahead and taped it all off and once he taped it off, he just took a hammer and hit the edge and it cut it perfectly. I've always sat there and tried to cut it and uh with a razor blade and stuff and it never turns out right. Um, another thing you can do is he took like a slight file and just filed it. But yeah, came out really good. So, he got it all painted black.

[00:13:35]Um, but we did run into one issue. So, Sam ordered head gaskets. And I think Sam's used to the LS world. So, this head gasket fits perfectly fine. Works.

[00:13:44]No big deal.

[00:13:47]You got the same head gasket on this side. And you can see she's a little short. There's supposed to be a hole there. This doesn't line up. So, Ford is going to take two different gaskets. So, I'm going to get with Sam and have him get the correct gasket. Um, he's already getting oil pane gaskets and front cover gaskets and all that stuff. So, in the meantime, while I'm waiting on all that stuff to show up, I've got plenty of time to uh clean up all the old parts and swatch the springs out on the heads and do all that. So, I'm going to get to work on that.

[00:16:15][music] >> [music] >> So, I've been over here in the corner working on uh Sam's 5.4 L Lightning motor. Um, we got the engine block painted, found out that we have a wrong head gasket. Um, I've been cleaning up parts as we go. I hate when you put an engine together and you have a whole bunch of old dirty parts. Um, so this head is assembled. It's got the new springs on it. Got the new cam on it.

[00:16:52]It's together. The uh cam rocker caps, whatever you want to call them, are not torqued. The head studs are not in there. We're waiting to make sure that he has the correct head gaskets, but it's the head's cleaned up and it's on there just sitting there temporarily.

[00:17:06]Head studs are in. Um, I went ahead and cleaned up the front cover. This front cover was horribly dirty and it just takes time to clean these parts up. But once they're clean and you go and put it back in, it looks like a brand new engine and that's what we're going for.

[00:17:20]So, tomorrow I'll work on getting the other cylinder head cleaned up and getting it together and then we'll loosely stick it on there and then uh we should have some parts coming for it soon. He had to order a whole bunch of gaskets and things. So, once all that stuff shows up, we can start putting this thing together and then once it's together, throw it back in the car. So, more progress is made on the Lightning.

[00:17:39]So, this is Sean's S10 and uh it's a pretty cool little truck. I love first gen S10s. Um we built a rear end in this car. Um we bid some exhaust on this. We made a cold air intake for it. Uh he's actually probably going to be switching engines up down the road, but he wants us to relocate the battery to the trunk.

[00:17:59]He wants us to X the frame and we're going to work on putting a roll bar on it. So, pretty cool truck. It's naturally aspirated. I always give Sean crap. I'm like, you know, you can go a lot faster if you just put boost to it.

[00:18:10]But Sean likes to stay NA. That's his thing. So, pretty cool truck. Um, he's got these wheels on the front, which I really like, but he's actually switching over to some, uh, racing wheels. So, pretty cool, uh, pretty cool wheel setup on the back. I love that dish. So, but, uh, just another project for us to work on. On Sean's S10, we have the X for the frame made. There was a challenge to doing this. Um, I haven't documented a whole lot of this, but let me go show you exactly what we're doing on it and why it was a challenge. So, this is Sean's, um, square body or first gen S10. And I put aluminum exhaust on this thing uh, a while back and I notched the frame and did some things to it. Uh, I built the rear end that's in this car so or truck. Uh, but he he wants to X the frame cuz he doesn't want to put a cage in. He wants something to kind of stiffen it up, but he wanted it to be removable because the last thing you want to do is X the frame and then not be able to pull the transmission or work on it. So, uh, we came up with this idea. We made these plates and we welded in nuts onto the back side. Um, and then this plate just goes on to the frame rail and boxes it in over here. Same on this side. And then up front, we went ahead and drilled holes and welded nuts into the frame there along with here.

[00:19:30]This one was a little bit of a challenge because the frame's not flat. Also, the frame isn't the same on side to side.

[00:19:35]You'll see how wide it is here versus how wide it is here. So, there were a lot of things that changed. Um, and then when we were going to put this in, we had to have this tube come down and clear the exhaust, clear the transmission, clear the exhaust here.

[00:19:51]So, we had to lower everything down, but at the same time, you have to make it high up as possible so it doesn't hit on things. So, um, once we get it, uh, fully welded and painted, we'll stick it back up in there and we will show you how it looks on Sean's S10. After we get that done, we have to relocate the battery. And then he went ahead and ordered some new rear uh rear suspension parts for it. So, that'll probably take a week for that to get in, but once all that stuff's in, we'll show you how that's done on the S10. All right. On Colin's truck, uh, he had this massive hole here, and he's got some wiring that's all over the place that needs to be figured out still, but he installed a new motion shifter. These things are pretty sweet. if you ever seen one of those. Um, but he had this hole here where the manual transmission was at. So Braden went ahead and made this patch panel, put a nice little bead roll in it, put some screws in it, and then where this piece is at, it actually comes over and has a grommet on it. So made it nice and clean that way it doesn't cut the wiring going through there. So it turned out really good. And then another thing Braden knocked out real quick was he had a strange uh quick disconnect. So we took it off and put one of the motion ones on there. if you haven't used one of the motion ones, it makes it so much easier to find to put it back on. So, went ahead and switched that out real quick. And then, uh, we are waiting on a Maven mount to show up.

[00:21:06]Once the Maven mount shows up for this thing, we're going to figure out where we want to mount the turbo and start working on the turbo kit on this thing.

[00:21:12]So, it should be a pretty cool truck with a pretty sweet turbo kit. Well, that's going to do it for this episode.

[00:21:18]Um, it's been a pretty busy week. I don't know if I ever announced this, but uh Matthew ended up quitting a few weeks ago, two or three weeks ago. Uh he he just felt like he needed to focus more on his thing. So, he builds engines at his house. Um also, he's got a family, you know, and trying to do that. So, I applaud him for, you know, saying, "Hey, you know what? I think it's time for me to do my own thing." So, never want to get in the way of that. Um but I appreciate Matthew and everything he did for us. Um so, I have a new guy. Uh he's working on Sean's S10. He doesn't really care to be on the channel, which is totally cool by me, but uh you might see him running around in the background. Um but he knows a lot of stuff about chassis, uh chassis work. He knows a lot of stuff about rear ends and things like that. So, I'm excited to have him in so I can learn some stuff. Plus, he wants to learn some of the newer stuff that we do, um like with Bentech and things like that. So, we're going to try and, you know, teach him and have him teach us.

[00:22:11]Um but yeah, so excited to have a new hire in um but the shop is swamp right now. I appreciate everybody being uh patient with us.
