Now, [music] according to a BBC report, AI has made a vaccine designed to fight not just one virus, but potentially an entire family of viruses. Researchers at the University of Cambridge say they have developed what they describe as the world's first vaccine, whose key component was designed entirely by artificial intelligence and then tested in human volunteers. And the goal is remarkably ambitious. Instead of targeting a single coronavirus or a specific coronavirus variant, the AI was asked to study genetic information for multiple coronaviruses and design what scientists call a superantigen, a component capable of training the immune system to recognize threats across the entire coronavirus family. That means protection not only against current COVID variants, but potentially against future coronavirus outbreaks that have not even emerged yet. Normally, vaccines are built around viruses already circulating in the population, but AI flipped the process. Researchers reportedly fed vast amounts of genetic data into the system, and the AI searched for common features shared across many different coronaviruses, including those found in animals. The idea is simple: prepare the immune system for tomorrow's pandemic before it even exists. So far, 39 people have received the experimental vaccine in early safety trials. Scientists say the immune response has been modest, but encouraging, and they are already working on similar AI-designed vaccines for seasonal flu, bird flu, and even Ebola. The technology is still in its early stages, but if successful, it could fundamentally change how vaccines are developed, shifting medicine from reacting to outbreaks to anticipating them.
