Starting our next big project on the homestead

[00:00:01][music] [music] What you think you did wrong? [music] Welcome to this week's video. I am up in the roof, attic, I don't know what you want to call it. This below me is the kitchen.

[00:00:40]That will be our actual kitchen. And so, we need to do this roof. Uh, as you can see, this roof behind me, as you can see, there's OSB boards here. That was the one that we did, which is the library, which is right on the other side of this wall. this roof because it comes into the library roof needs to be redone and we need to get all of this junk and all of this out and redo this wall. A lot of work to do um in order to make this uh roof secure and and dry.

[00:01:18]And that's what we're going to be starting on because it's got to be done and this rainy season's coming already.

[00:01:24]It's already like the middle of July.

[00:01:25]So, we're going to take out a lot of the stuff that we can take out now so that we can prep it for the build. Uh because all this wood's got to be replaced.

[00:01:37]And uh we're probably going to vault this this uh kitchen roof like we did in the bathroom because then our kitchen will be massive and beautiful. But a lot of work before we get there. So, I'm going to start cleaning everything up and uh show you how bad it looks.

[00:02:25]These were the old sinks that they had in here. And it's like I don't know what type of stone it is, but it's this black almost like a slate stone. Uh, and this was their traditional sink. I don't know if I really want it in my kitchen.

[00:02:48]Maybe I'm uncultured because a lot of people who have come through the house say they love these sinks, but I don't I don't know. One is bigger than the other one. As you can see, it's a different size. Two, you can't really wash anything in these cuz they're not deep. Um maybe what 6 7 cm. Um I will make a decision at some point. We're going to cover them with some like uh bubble wrap type stuff in order to keep them from getting broken because I can't really remove them right now. They cemented them into this whole structure here.

[00:03:25]And then when I actually come to make the kitchen, I might keep it for the purpose of it's kind of pretty uh but I don't know how functional it is. I might keep the smaller one and then get a normal like farmhouse sink. I know those aren't really popular anymore, but they are deep. And uh I kind of want a deep sink so you can wash your pots and pans because in the dishwasher you can wash all your plates and all that, but your pots and pans and cutting boards, you really need like a deep sink to really wash them. So that will be a design design feature when we get there, but I don't know right now. These slabs over here are actually marble.

[00:04:08]Um, this was a corner piece that goes there. I'm gonna remove that because the wood that it was sitting on is broken.

[00:04:15]We may or may not put the corner piece back in there. Or we may just put it here at this door. Um, you spin it around and then you'd have a corner piece here coming to the outside cuz that's the outside door. These pieces are, I believe, marble and they're quite nice. I like the kind of pinkish uh hue. It's like a pink marble that has over time uh really aged with the house. I think I'll look online to figure out how I can clean them and polish them and then we'll keep the marble. But that's again, we're not really working on the kitchen right now.

[00:04:54]We're working more on the roof. Uh but in terms of what we're trying to save from the kitchen, I think the marble would be really nice. And this is an old ice box. And the ice box uh obviously was a feature from a long time ago from a very wealthy family that lived here.

[00:05:12]Um the family that lives here now, not so wealthy, [laughter] but the uh family, whoever built this house a long time ago had this ice box.

[00:05:20]And you can see cuz there's spets on each end which you can let the water out after it melted. So we're going to try and keep this marble. And we'll probably even leave this counter here. We would love to put a a uh window here because that's to the outside, but I don't think it's going to happen based on the planning permission that we'd have to get. And the wall is very thick and yeah, it might not happen, but it might.

[00:05:51]We will see. Um, but yeah, let's keep going. We're going to move these marble pieces to a safe place.

[00:07:31]>> I'm going to go up and start taking out the wood uh for the ceilings. I'm leaving the support beams because uh when we redo the roof, I want to be able to have somewhere to stand. I have my crowbar. I have a mask.

[00:07:47]And I have goggles.

[00:07:50]And I have a hammer and a saw. This is the third ceiling that I'm ripping out. So hopefully this will go a little bit faster because I have some experience now. But I'm going to climb up and start doing it.

[00:09:37][music] >> [music] [music] >> Can you see me? I ripped the ceiling out up to the point that I wanted to rip it out to. Uh I'll move some stuff from the pantry. Um clean that area up and then finish ripping it out probably tomorrow.

[00:10:14]This took like uh 3 hours, so not too long. I'm getting better at it, I feel.

[00:10:19]Uh this roof was really or ceiling cuz it's not the roof, but this ceiling was really easy to take out. Um yeah, took about an hour, an hour and a half to take it out and then to clean it up. The floor is all clean again so I can move forward tomorrow with uh taking the other part out after I move some of the we have a cabinet and thing like a cabinetry thing that we want to keep, but I need to move it so that when the stuff falls down, it's not a complete mess. So yeah, I will be back tomorrow to continue this job. I'm back out today and Ivonne is also going to be around to help. I did a lot of the ceiling. I took a lot of it out on kind of the kitchen side, but we still have this area in the pantry that we need to take out. Uh, but we have some of these kind of uh, china sets that we want to keep. We have two of them. So, we're going to move those first, clean up the area so that when stuff falls down, nothing breaks. And then we will uh, yeah, start taking the ceiling out to finish up this job.

[00:11:23]We cleared out the pantry. This used to be and this will be the pantry. Uh, and yeah, everything is done now. The big unit. And the next step is, as you can see, getting this ceiling out.

[00:11:37]Yesterday, Miguel already worked on the ceiling on the other side in the kitchen. But because there was still so much stuff in this pantry, couldn't work on this. So, that is the next step.

[00:11:46]We're going to rip it out and make a mess again after we just cleaned up.

[00:11:56]Like I said, he's going to take out the ceiling of the chimney. At the chimney?

[00:12:02]No, no more chimney. The ceiling of the pantry.

[00:13:27]This is the ridge beam [laughter] that's holding this whole roof up. And we knew that a fire had happened in that side when we did that roof because there was a beam that was completely burned out and we replaced it. This is the ridge beam and it is entirely burned. So I guess the fire started here in the kitchen and spread to the other side. Why they didn't replace this is beyond me. This is like I don't know 3 cm that is holding up this entire roof and it's burned. Uh, and it stretches out that way. But this burn part here, literally, it's more than halfway through this beam. You can see it just how burned out that is. Why they didn't replace it.

[00:14:12]Actually, they put in a second ridge beam here to the wall. And I was wondering why the hell they did that.

[00:14:19]Didn't make any sense. And you can even see up here, they put little pieces to to attach it um to the ridge beam that was there. We replaced that one because when we were redoing this roof just to keep it uh together cuz you can see the new batten boards that we put in cuz we were working on the other roof. It was temporary fix and we put in a new ridge beam because that one was all rotted out and we were wondering why they had a second one. Well, it's because this one has burned completely through. So, they put one here essentially to make up for this. Why they didn't replace it? I don't know. Maybe because they would have had to take everything off and redo it and they didn't want to do that. Well, that is crazy.

[00:14:59]It is day three of taking out this ceiling and starting to work on the roof. Uh, as you can see, the ceiling has been taken out of the pantry and it's been taken out of the kitchen. So, I'm going to climb up. We had put a piece of plastic up there in the winter time because it was raining a lot and we didn't want to have any leaks coming down into the living room cuz the living room is a space that we were kind of using. We have our fridge and our uh freezer and stuff in there. And so we are going to take the plastic off now and uh see what it looks like underneath. That way we can get a full idea of what we are working with in terms of this build in terms of the roof and kind of the structure under the roof. Uh like I said, a lot of these beams that you see above me will have to be replaced or taken away, especially for this area cuz we're vaultting the ceiling. So, we don't need these ceiling beams anymore. But on the other side, we are going to keep the ceiling lower. Um we're not going to vault that ceiling.

[00:16:08]And so we'll have to take take a look at those beams and see how good they are, if we need to replace them, if we can salvage them or what the, you know, what the whole building process is going to be like. So fun fun.

[00:17:57]>> That fell on me kind of. That's how [laughter] It's not the best way to grab it.

[00:18:12]>> No wonder my thumb broke.

[00:18:15]>> Yeah, this is going to be too fast to turn here.

[00:18:20]>> All right, pull it back in and I'll chop it in half with my saw, I guess.

[00:18:37]>> Thought it was this particle. [snorts] >> Yeah.

[00:18:39]>> Or >> so heavy. I mean, >> maybe the bottom's one nice piece of wood, too.

[00:18:44]>> Yeah.

[00:18:46]>> Oh, yeah. All right. Maybe I need to break it apart with my hammer to try and save if it's a nice piece of wood.

[00:18:51]>> Yeah, >> I would like to save it. I thought it was all particle board cuz of the back.

[00:18:55]>> It's okay.

[00:18:57]broke it all apart. Wasn't really planning on doing that, but uh when Ivonne came to pick it up, it was actually heavier uh than we realized.

[00:19:06]And then when I started to cut it, we saw there was actually a decent piece of wood in here. Um so that's why it was so heavy.

[00:19:17]I might be able to use this wood for a future project.

[00:19:24]I don't know. We'll see.

[00:19:27]Maybe I'll make a table out of it. Who knows? Who knows?

[00:20:11]>> So, we need to move this if it's possible.

[00:20:13]>> It's probably very heavy.

[00:20:17]>> Oh, >> that's not possible.

[00:20:23]Yeah, [snorts] it's possible.

[00:20:29]>> It's really heavy.

[00:20:43]>> This is what we did for this week. Um, there's still a lot to be done, obviously. Yes, but we're starting the prep work. Well, Miguel started the prep work. I helped where I could. This I couldn't really go up there together.

[00:20:58]It's like we're not so sure how strong it is these beams and it's just easier for one person to do it.

[00:21:02]>> Kind of easier for one person to do it and obviously I'm going to be that person. Um >> obviously >> obviously [laughter] >> actually no. Um you helped clean a lot and that was really helpful. We did get these cupboards off and you helped with that.

[00:21:15]>> Yeah. And as you were working, while you were working here, I was like doing some other things like I was working in the garden a little bit.

[00:21:22]>> Yeah. Our garden was overrun. We showed that previously and you've been trying to get it under control, the beds and the land.

[00:21:28]>> Slow to get in there.

[00:21:29]>> Yeah. So, it's not like you're not doing anything. It's just some of that isn't worth showing, so to say. It's just gardening. But, we got the roof off here in the kitchen. Not the roof, but the ceiling and in the pantry. And we might I've been debating if I want to just go ahead and take the ceiling out of the living room. Also, I'm going to sit on it maybe for a day or two to really think about it because that roof needs to come off. But we moved a lot of the stuff from here into the living room. So then we'll have to find a new spot for it.

[00:22:02]>> Might be next week's video. We have some outside work that we need to do also like getting gutters off uh which we can do before the wood and all the supplies arrive. And there's a lemon tree that we really have to prune back hard. Uh because it's basically growing onto the roof. So there's plenty more to do.
