You clean your room, wash your sheets, and vacuum the floor, [music] yet somehow they're still there. Some people even imagine that mites are created from dust itself, [music] or that they simply materialize whenever a place gets dirty.
But the truth is far more fascinating.
Mites aren't born from dust. They're [music] tiny living creatures that have been sharing the Earth with us for a hundreds of millions of years. In fact, they're so incredibly small and widespread that you've almost certainly been surrounded by them your entire life without ever noticing. Let's dive in, right here on History [music] of Simple Things.
To understand where mites come from, we first need to understand what they actually are. Mites are microscopic relatives of spiders, ticks, and scorpions. They belong to a group of animals called arachnids, which means they have more in common with a spider than with an insect.
There are over 55,000 known species of mites, but scientists believe there could be well over a million species that haven't even been discovered yet.
They live in almost every environment imaginable, from forests and oceans to deserts, mountain peaks, and even inside the soil beneath your feet.
Some species are beneficial, some are harmless, and a few can become pests.
So when people ask, "Where do mites come from?" they're actually talking about a huge variety of creatures, each with a different lifestyle.
The mites most people are referring to are dust mites. These tiny creatures are almost invisible, measuring only about a quarter of a millimeter long. Even if one were crawling across your hand, you wouldn't be able to see it without a microscope.
Unlike bed bugs, dust mites don't bite, sting, or drink blood. Instead, they survive by feeding on something that humans constantly produce without realizing it, dead skin cells.
Every single day, your body naturally sheds thousands of tiny flakes of skin.
This process happens whether you're awake or asleep. Those microscopic skin flakes collect on mattresses, pillows, blankets, sofas, carpets, and stuffed toys. To us, they seem insignificant, but to a dust mite, they're an endless buffet.
That's why your bed is one of their favorite places. After all, you spend around a third of your life sleeping there, constantly providing warmth, moisture from your breath and sweat, and a steady supply of food.
But if mites need people to survive, where did the very first ones come from?
Long before humans existed, mites were already thriving on Earth. Scientists believe their ancestors evolved more than 400 million years ago, making them older than the dinosaurs.
Over millions of years, different species adapted to countless habitats.
Some evolved to live in soil, breaking down decaying plants. Others became predators that hunt tiny insects. Some moved onto animals, feeding on feathers, fur, or skin. Dust mites are simply one branch of this enormous evolutionary family. Instead of living in forests or caves, they adapted to life inside human homes because we unintentionally provide the perfect environment for them.
This is why dust doesn't actually create mites. It's the other way around. Dust is simply a mixture of many tiny particles, dead skin, fabric fibers, pollen, pet dander, bits of soil, and other microscopic debris. Dust mites move into these dusty environments because they contain the food and shelter they need. If a room collects more dust over time, it becomes more attractive to mites, giving the illusion that the dust somehow created them. In reality, the dust is simply their habitat.
So, how do mites end up inside your home in the first place? The answer is surprisingly simple. They're incredibly easy to spread. They can hitch a ride on clothing, blankets, furniture, luggage, stuffed animals, and even pet fur. When you move into a new house, buy a used couch, borrow a blanket, or bring home a pillow, there's a chance you're also bringing along a few microscopic passengers. Since mites are far too small to notice, they often spread without anyone realizing it.
Humidity is actually one of the biggest factors affecting dust mite survival.
Unlike humans, dust mites don't drink water the way we do. Instead, they absorb moisture directly from the air through their bodies. This means they thrive in humid environments, but struggle in dry conditions. That's one reason why tropical and coastal regions often have higher dust mite populations than dry deserts. Inside homes, bedrooms, and upholstered furniture usually retain enough moisture to keep them comfortable, especially if ventilation is poor.
Of course, not all mites live in our beds. Some species spend their entire lives in gardens, helping decompose dead organic matter and returning nutrients to the soil.
Others prey on harmful insects and are actually used by farmers as natural pest control. There are water mites swimming in fresh water ponds, spider mites feeding on plants, and tiny mites living on birds and mammals.
The word mite describes an incredibly diverse group of animals with countless ecological roles. Most of them have nothing to do with your bedroom.
So, why can't we ever seem to get rid of them completely? The answer lies in both their size and their numbers. Mites are incredibly tiny, reproduce quickly, and are constantly being reintroduced from the surrounding environment. Even if you thoroughly clean your entire house, new mites can easily arrive through fabrics, visitors, pets, or simply from objects brought indoors. Since they feed on something humans naturally produce every day, dead skin, they almost always have a reliable food source waiting for them.
So, where do mites come from? They don't appear out of thin air, and they certainly aren't born from dust. They're ancient arachnids whose ancestors evolved hundreds of millions of years before humans ever existed.
