[00:01:13]>> Yes, and plants grow. They start from a very, very tiny plant. They get bigger and bigger, and some plants also have beautiful flowers.

[00:01:26]Some of them we see every single day.

[00:01:29]We'll learn all about them in this great nature lesson. Friends, let's get started with today's reading.

[00:01:41]Some are very small. Others are very big.

[00:01:46]Most plants need water and sunlight.

[00:01:50]Plants don't do much, but grow, but they aren't boring.

[00:01:55]Some are very interesting.

[00:01:57]Some plants eat bugs.

[00:01:59]Others have huge flowers.

[00:02:03]The Rafflesia flower can be 1 m across.

[00:02:07]It looks pretty, but it has a bad smell.

[00:04:30]Plants need water. If you don't water them, then they will slowly die. And Emily asks Ken, "Don't you ever water your plants, Ken?" She sees that his plant is not looking very healthy.

[00:04:46]>> And Ken says, "That's not my plant."

[00:04:50]He's not watering it because it's not his. Friends, many people do have plants in their home. They need to take care of them.

[00:05:00]>> Yes, you need to take care of a plant.

[00:05:03]And what are plants? Well, we talked about it a little bit earlier that plants they're often green, they grow, they're alive, but they're not animals.

[00:05:13]>> Yeah, and they come in many shapes and sizes. This plant is not Ken's, it's Milo's. But Emily says, "Even though it's not Ken's, he could still water it."

[00:05:25]>> Yes, after all they are roommates. He could water his plant for his roommate.

[00:05:31]Friends, did you notice that we have come to the answer for our find it question? Remember the question was, "What isn't Ken a fan of?"

[00:05:58]Kind of means to feed the plant some water.

[00:06:01]>> Yes, plants need water. And Ken says he's not a fan of plants. Does that mean Garrett that fan that plants need air and you need to fan them?

[00:06:12]>> That's not the fan we're talking about.

[00:06:14]We're talking more about fans of sports teams or a singer, that kind of fan. I am a fan of Jack. Let's go to him now.

[00:06:43]I'm not a fan of spicy food.

[00:06:48]Amy is not a fan of rock music.

[00:06:54]They're not a fan of long meetings.

[00:07:02]>> Thanks so much, Jack. That's why I am a fan. Well, Ken said that he is not a fan of plants. He actually thinks they're pretty boring.

[00:07:13]>> Yes, he doesn't think plants are very interesting. He doesn't love them and want to have a plant of his own. He thinks they're boring, not interesting.

[00:07:25]Maybe cuz he feels like they don't do anything. They aren't like animals where they can run around, like dogs, they can play with you or you can go out on a walk. You can't really do anything with a plant.

[00:07:37]>> Yeah, you might think of a class that you had in school that just made you want to fall asleep. Nothing the teacher said was that interesting. That is something that would be boring. And of course, a plant can be much more boring than, for instance, having a dog.

[00:07:56]>> Mhm, Ken thinks they're pretty boring.

[00:07:59]But friends, do you know what is not boring? Today's >> calendar phrase.

[00:09:02]>> Absolutely. Something is important if it is something you need to pay attention to, or it's something that's very helpful, or it's something that is going to maybe change your life. It's something that is important.

[00:09:19]>> Yes, something is important may also be something that you need or use often.

[00:09:26]And Emily says that plants are important. She also says some are pretty amazing.

[00:09:33]>> They're pretty amazing. They're pretty great or pretty interesting.

[00:09:38]Uh says, "Okay, but they don't do anything."

[00:09:42]>> That is true. They just sit there. Well, you can't really see them growing because they grow very slowly and they don't run around the place or do much, but Emily says, "Not true. Some plants eat bugs."

[00:09:58]>> Yeah, some plants like to eat bugs. They don't have a mouth quite like an animal does, but some of them catch bugs in one part of the plant and then close up to eat that bug to help them grow.

[00:10:50]>> No, unfortunately, I'm not very good at taking care of plants, so it was not very healthy and it died. But anyways, friends, we still have more plants to talk about, so let's get back into our lesson.

[00:11:14]>> Another amazing plant is the Rafflesia flower.

[00:11:18]>> What's special about it?

[00:11:21]>> There are no leaves. It's just a huge flower. It can be 1 m across.

[00:11:32]>> Not at all. It has a very bad smell.

[00:11:55]>> No, I don't think so. Well, Ken says that he would like a plant like that for his house, and he's talking about plants that can eat bugs.

[00:12:06]>> Yeah, I think they look pretty cool, too. So, that would be fun to have in my house. Emily also talks about one other amazing plant.

[00:12:17]>> It is called the Rafflesia flower. What does this flower look like? Well, it looks like this. It is a huge flower.

[00:12:27]>> It is big. It's very colorful, too. It's not the kind of flower you'll see in most people's backyard.

[00:12:35]>> No, I don't think so. So, what's special about it?

[00:12:39]>> Well, there are no leaves on this plant.

[00:12:42]It's just one huge, or really big, flower.

[00:12:46]>> Mhm, that is interesting because most plants, well, they have leaves, right?

[00:12:52]But, this one doesn't have any leaves.

[00:12:55]It's just a really, really big flower.

[00:12:58]Huge means very big.

[00:13:00]>> And this one can be 1 m across. So, from one side to the other, it measures 1 m.

[00:13:09]That is huge. Now, across does mean from one side to the other. We've talked about that before, but we need to learn some more with Jack.

[00:13:25]ship. It can be 1 m across. Do we have a cross?

[00:13:39]The table is 2 m across.

[00:13:45]The river here is about 30 m across.

[00:14:16]>> Thanks so much, Jack. Well, a flower that is 1 m across is huge. It definitely doesn't sound like what we'd call a house plant.

[00:14:28]>> No, house plants, well, they are what you will have in your house. They're often very beautiful to have on the table or up on a shelf, but this flower is so big, where in your house would you put it?

[00:14:43]>> Absolutely. Now, there's one other reason why you might not want to have it in your house. That's what we get into in the next part of our conversation.

[00:14:54]Ken wants to know if this huge flower has a nice smell.

[00:15:00]>> Does it have a nice smell? Many flowers, when we think of them, we think of them as having a nice smell. When you smell them, you feel good inside because it has a nice smell.

[00:15:14]>> You smell them and you smell the smell.

[00:15:18]The smell here is their scent, what they smell like. Now, of course, that could be good or it could be bad.

[00:15:26]>> So, does this Rafflesia flower have a nice smell? Emily says, "Not at all. It has a very bad smell. So, you wouldn't want that flower in your house even if it weren't that big."

[00:15:41]>> Yeah. So, that phrase "not at all" means not even one little bit. It smells really bad. So, yes, you would not want this in your house even though it looks really cool.

[00:15:56]>> It does look cool, but it has a bad smell. Another useful word that we often use to describe something that has a bad smell is the word stinky. If something doesn't smell good like trash or food that is going bad, we say it smells stinky.

[00:16:16]>> Yeah, it smells stinky just like the Rafflesia flower. But, friends, don't worry. You won't just run into this walking around. You can only find these in the wild in a few different places on Earth.

[00:16:31]>> Yes. And Ken, after he knows that the flower has a bad smell, he says, "I don't want that in my house." I wouldn't either.

[00:16:42]>> I would not either. But, it would be fun to have some plants in my house. Maria, earlier you said you had a hard time taking care of that plant, and I have the same problem.

[00:16:54]>> Yes. Well, recently I had another plant in my house, and I wasn't taking very good care of it. So, I gave it to my colleague who I work with, and she is taking good care of it for me.

[00:17:08]>> That's great. It's good to have good coworkers.
