But the real answer is far stranger.
It's written into your chromosomes. It shaped how your body ages, how your immune system responds to danger, and how long your ancestors were ever expected to live in the first place.

Almost everywhere on Earth, in almost every era, men die younger than women.
Not by a little.
In some populations, the gap stretches past a decade. Scientists call this the male-female mortality ratio, and it isn't new. It isn't a symptom of modern life. It goes back further than agriculture, further than cities, further than fire.
It goes back to the moment sex itself evolved.
Think about your body for a second.
Every cell inside you carries a set of instructions.

In a small hunting band 40,000 years ago, a man's position wasn't guaranteed.

High testosterone doesn't just make you more likely to take a risk. It can make your body less equipped to survive the consequences.
So, the ancient male body was optimized for a short, intense, high-output life.
Build strength fast, compete hard, reproduce early, worry about long-term maintenance later, if there was a later at all.
Does that sound familiar?
It should, because that same hormonal blueprint is still running inside modern men today in a world that no longer requires it. You don't need to charge a mammoth to prove your worth. You don't need to win a physical contest to secure a mate or a meal.
But the underlying wiring, the drive to compete, to take the risk, to push the body past caution, that hasn't updated its programming to match the world you live in now.
This is why modern men still die younger, too, just from different threats. Car accidents, workplace injuries, delayed doctor visits, heart disease that gets ignored until it's an emergency. The dangers changed. The instinct to shrug them off didn't.
There's something almost tragic in that mismatch. The very traits that once kept a hunting band fed and defended are the same traits quietly working against longevity in a world built out of desks, cars, and screens.
But here's where the story turns again, because evolution didn't abandon men to an early grave without giving them something in return.
Anthropologist Kristen Hawkes, famous for her work on the grandmother hypothesis, points out that human survival was never a solo project. It was a group strategy.
Older individuals, especially women past reproductive age, extended human lifespans by supporting grandchildren, sharing knowledge, and stabilizing the group when younger adults took the risks.
Men played their part earlier and harder. Women, biologically freed from some of that immediate competitive pressure and carrying the genetic backup of a second X chromosome, were built to last longer, to become the keepers of memory and knowledge across generations.
It wasn't unfair. It was a division of biological labor written in millions of years of trial and error.
So when you look at the mortality gap today, you're not looking at a modern failure. You're looking at the tail end of an ancient bargain. Men built for intensity, women built for endurance.
One system optimized for the immediate fight, one optimized for the long game.
