Proper shutdown and startup procedures for mechanical fuel injection systems involve shutting off the fuel valve before the ignition to prevent fuel from entering the engine and causing hydraulic lock, using a small amount of volatile gasoline to prime cold engines for easier starting, and purging all fuel from the system at the end of the day by running the engine until it runs out of fuel and then using the starter to clear remaining fuel from the lines and barrel valve.

Mechanical Fuel Injection Pt 3
Added:part three all right so I'm nuts raining outside here today and I got a steel roof building so hopefully it doesn't start pouring and get real loud but anyways I've got a car ready to start I I turned the valve on on the bottom of the tank I unplug the vent this is this is my vent plug it's a 3/8 bolt that I shove up in the hose and I have this little yellow flag to remind me because I can see it hanging down when I'm unloading the car to try to help me remind me to take the vent plug out and then I also hooked up the fuel line here the reason I do that is that I don't want fuel going into the engine I plugged the vent off because back in the alcohol when I was running alcohol it would evaporate very fast and I wanted to I seal the tank up to keep it from evaporating plus if you leave the vent open in the trailer for a week or two or whatever sometimes you get a lot of fumes in the car in the trailer and I think it's dangerous plus you're evaporating fuel and people getting contaminated with moisture in the air so I see with my fuel system up at the end of the race day I like I said I shut that valve off the bottom of tank I do that because of weather changes if it's cold when you shut it down cold ambient and then it heats up it'll pressurize the tank it's kind of like a water bottle when you take it out of the refrigerator or put it in refrigerator they kind of collapse or they pressurize when they get hot same kind of thing happens to that and it will actually push fuel past the pump in pass the shutoff valve and I've had it go into the engine and then if it can hydraulic the engine or you can actually it'll creep I the Rings and go into the pain of contaminated when I disconnect the line from the engine there's no and I plug the line and plug the barrel valve there's no way if you'll can get into the engine when it's shut off and but Wow you have to prime it to get it started because you're not gonna have any fuel until it starts cranking now you probably can crank it long enough in order to get it started however I don't like cranking it that long it's just you know takes a bunch of juice out of the battery plus it's hard on the starter motor so I prime it I put a little bit of fuel in it so let me show the inside of the car this is my shutoff valve right here this is on if you can see it here that's on and that's off I even have off on here so I don't forget okay so I want to turn that on and then you know so now let's open that that valve in order to allow fuel to go to the engine so I have it hooked up the tent that lines hooked up that tanks got fuel in it I've got the other thing you always want to do and I've done this that's why I laugh is that you know the balls that I had in in here you want to take the hose out or for cover anything like that always remember to do that because it won't start very good and it won't run when you do that and it's a mess if you don't catch it right away so that being said what I do is I have I use a little squirt ball like this when it's cold and I used 87 octane gasoline you don't want to race with that but it's okay on a cold engine to start it because it ignite it's it's highly volatile and it lights a lot easier than race fuel or eat especially if you use an alcohol trying to start them on alcohol cold hard if you use a little bit of gasoline just get a little bit heating the cylinders it fires right up and then course right away it'll start running on the race gas within a couple of seconds so it's all good so I think I'm ready I'm going to go ahead and you squirt a little bit of fuel in each one of these and and then what I'll do is go ahead and start it here so all I really do it's in neutral I got to turn the battery power on it wasn't ready batteries on and I got the ignition on now I'll crank it and that'll stall alright so but that just started the basically pushing fuel up into towards the engine I usually got to do this two maybe three times and then it'll run on it's cold the other thing it's gonna happen is I'll talk more about when when I shut it down when I'm going to restore it shortly hang will let's start it [Music] [Music] all right you notice how easily it started and then it idled right away and it'll I don't like that the rest of the day now you notice when I shut it off I shut that I took and shut off the fuel the fuel lever here and immediately I reached up and shut the ignition off and if you noticed it revved up a little bit when I shut it down because I shut the fuel off but there's still a little bit of fuel in the lines and you want that but you don't want to shut it off and not shut the fuel off because it will be pumping fuel clear up into the engine until the crank stops turning and you don't want that because you can hydraulic the engine by doing that because you'll pump fuel right in there especially if it's kind of revved up a little bit when you shut the ignition off you know it puts fuel down in the engine and it can you know even if it doesn't hydraulic and can creep past the Rings into the crankcase and contaminate the oil so I shut the fuel off but you also don't want to run it completely out of fuel if you're going to restart it because then you've got a prime it again or crank it or whatever now it should restart and it didn't warm it up very much so we'll see what happens but I should be able just turn to the lever back on and hit the starter turn the ignition on [Music] all right that's how it works so the last thing I'll do whenever I'm done at the end of the day that's how I start you know if I go to the staging lanes and shove it off or I come back from the run I shut it off you shut the fuel off and shut the ignition off and it shouldn't fire right back up you know within an hour - oh it's still warm the other thing at the end of the day so what I do at the end of the day is I'll do that right now I'll fire it up and then what I'll do is I'll shut the fuel off and just leave it run leave it idle until it runs completely out of fuel and then after it shuts off I will hit the starter again and it'll usually fire right back up for another second or two and do that I'll do that a couple times till it doesn't want to start anymore that's basically sucks all the fuel out of the nozzles in the barrel valve and the lye on top of that line then I could take that line off plug it and plug the tank then and we shut the tank off and it's ready to go there's no fuel in the engine it won't get any fuel in the engine and of course I'll have to prime it again to get it started the next time so anyhow I'll start it back up [Music] all right I'll try it one more time one more it's pretty much done all right so now I can shut the ignition off and you know shut the car on the big battery's cutoff switch off and you know plug the plug this I'll put the covers back on the injectors take the line off do all that and it'll be ready to run the next time I go to run I hope that helps and if you get any questions let me know thanks
