[00:00:00]Hey, what is up everybody? Hopefully this all works. Today we're going to continue working on my rebuild of the Robot Dreams GBC module. And today specifically, we're going to be looking at the intake module. Uh I got most of the actual robots working last week, although I did tweak some things which we'll go over a bit later. Um, but for now I just basically got to finish off the intake module, which was kind of working last week. And obviously I've had this working before, but there was some like minor issues with it. So I did a little bit of reconfiguration, but right now we're going to test this fully, make sure it's actually working, uh, put it through its paces and try and, uh, deal with any issues that may pop up. Uh hopefully there's some people that might show up in the chat.

Uh, I've found testing intake modules is definitely done best done independently instead of like hooking it up to the entire module. Basically, this accepts balls at the beginning and then routes them to basically just feeds.

[00:03:07]So, in order to test this, I'm going to stick a motor on it. I'm also going to we're going to build a little feedback loop so that the balls when they come out the top, they just feed right back in. So, we can just run it continuously and uh yeah, it'll be good to go. Uh I do have this gear on the end here, but that's just for uh that's just for interfacing with the actual drive module of the robot uh of the GBC module.

[00:05:52]Oh, it looks so good. I think I nailed I think I ironed out. There was there were a few minor issues with the the tray feed last week, but uh but it all seem to uh it all seem to work. So far so good. Of course, you don't know until you really you really run it through its paces. So, uh yeah.

[00:06:32]But whatever, that is what it is. Uh, what Lego sets were announced? Oh, the pinball. Classic space pinball machine, which should be pretty exciting. New space baby coming out.

[00:06:50]I guess that's like a July 1 release, which is bad timing for me because we'll be traveling for the summer. But hopefully in the fall I'll build that and get another space baby.

[00:07:16]Okay. Uh so yeah, we want to create a little feedback uh feedback thing. So actually I busted out my old marble run pieces so we can build some uh just build some channels.

[00:07:44]So in theory theory, actually we're just going to mount some uh mount some ball run channels into this to route the balls back into the intake.

[00:19:19]So, this ramp right now is not quite steep enough to to push the balls with enough force into the into the stepper mechanism.

Uh I'm actually not too concerned about I'm not too concerned about this transition long term cuz there's uh a lot of flexibility in adjusting heights and stuff here. So, at some point, I'll just uh nail that with some tweaking. But the the little potential blockage here that happens every once in a while is a little more concerning.

[00:26:03]Yeah, we definitely need to do something with this gray corner. Um, thankfully it's easy to remove, so it's easy to uh to adjust. Actually, I just want to make it a little bit Just want to make it a little bit thicker.

[00:26:58]So instead of just having a 2 by 2, I'm actually just make it thicker by a tile.

[00:27:11]And I think there'll still be space for Yeah. three balls to to go through that gap, but But it might just push this ball further enough back that it doesn't ever catch on the ball that's already in the channel.

[00:28:41]So, the mechanism that pushes the reservoir up, I'm actually going to increase its range of motion so it comes up higher. I just add another plate.

[00:28:59]Basically, there's a cam here that basically pushes this up and down. And if I increase the thickness of this uh plate here by one plate, it'll actually push this reservoir up higher, which might do something.

[00:29:56]Yeah. So now when it pushes the balls up. Oh no, I got some Oh yeah, but now we got some interesting because I added this. Oh, we got some potential blockage here, which is always an issue when you constrain the space the balls are allowed to run through.

[00:30:25]Basically, whenever you constrain any kind of channel with the balls running through, you risk them uh creating a blockage.

[00:30:46]Uh but so far, the actual depositing of the depositing of the balls. Oh, no.

[00:31:10]As long as it fixes itself, it's actually not that big of an issue.

[00:31:34]For the blockage issue, I'm actually going to replace I'm going to try replacing this tile with a curved slope.

[00:31:58]As with any GBC, you really just need to run it for like hours on end.

[00:32:05]As long as there are plenty of balls to go around, a little temporary blockage is hardly noticeable in the long run.

[00:32:47]First, we'll clear out the mechanism.

[00:32:52]Oh, yeah. See, we got uh some blockage at the constriction, but we're going to try and remove that constriction.

[00:33:06]So, instead of having flat profile here, we're going to have a curved profile, which will hopefully lessen that issue.

[00:34:13]It's actually not too bad. Uh, I can still see potentially it might jam up, but it doesn't seem to actually be that bad.

[00:34:55]And at the front, it's funny. It's definitely like you can see it trying to create some kind of blockage, but uh it definitely sorts itself out for the most part.

[00:50:34]Uh, dragon shadow. Now I just need to rig the holding bucket to regulate the speed. As the bucket fills up, it speeds up. As the bucket gets emptier, it slows down. Oh man, that's like next level.

[00:50:47]But actually GBC has a very strict uh specs that the mod modules have to adhere to. Basically it has to push ideally nominally one bottle per second is the is the rate that your module has to handle.

[00:51:07]So actually I don't know what the rate is of this. Let's time it. Uh, one, two, three.

[00:53:14]I'm actually looking at the clock. have a have a clock in the background while I'm counting there, but I have it timed. The actual drive motor for the actual full module uh is an XL motor running at max speed and I have it geared down so that the timing is is right. So in theory when I connect this to the actual module it should operate at the right speed.

[00:53:55]I mean this is seems to be working pretty well so far.

[00:54:07]I might be happy enough with that. Even if it does have a few minor issues, I'll do a full test on Sunday. Sunday, I mentioned a couple weeks ago, Sunday is there's a local robotics competition for the kids this weekend in Ottawa. So, I'll bring it there and I'll run it all day and then I'll really be able to see what uh what issues may develop.

[00:55:16]Most of them take a lot of time. At this speed, it's ample time to fix any blockages. Yeah, as long as they sort themselves out in a reasonable amount of time, then it's not really that big an issue.

Uh I don't know when. Obviously, he wrote this blog post in February. So, as you may or may not know, getting things manufactured is uh there's there's a lot of things that have to be done.

[00:56:55]Still in beta basically. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. Although this is I think this is I think these pretty much nailed the design.

[00:57:04]I think it's just a matter of uh putting into production right now. Need a Kickstarter. Yeah, I mean the Kickstarter doesn't help you manufacture things. Uh that just raises money.

[00:57:19]So making a tiny crane carrier that will kind of work like the robots. Oh yeah, maybe interesting idea.

[00:57:31]Okay, this has been working for like at least five minutes. So, I think we're ready to hook it up to the main module and see if it actually works in production.

[00:59:26]The other thing that I've been toying with is these buckets. Uh, basically all this week I was playing with them cuz right now I've been using these, but these are really old. These have been out of production for I don't know 20 years or something maybe. Actually, I should really look that up. I don't because uh it's all great and for me to use them because I have some, but uh if anybody else wants to build this and there's none available, then they're not going to have a good time trying to find them.

[01:01:12]Oh yeah, and they're not that not that actually that expensive, but still. And I don't foresee this model being all that super popular.

[01:01:21]So, you know, it's a good option, I guess, to have. But I was experimenting with other ways to do it. Actually, LEGO just released this new bucket, which I think is going to be great for It's like a widemouth bucket that the balls like sit in really nicely.

[01:01:44]And I only bought two of them cuz I at the time I was like, "Oh, that's a new part. I should get a couple. See if I can do anything with them." And now that I've decided I want to do something with them, I need like a like well at least five of them.

[01:01:58]So I'll probably order more at some point. Uh okay. So, uh, step one is we're going to just mount this onto the front here and we'll interface that gear. So, now in theory, Hold on. I gotta make some room.

[01:04:31]Sorry. You almost need something to jostle the storage box to keep them moving. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Some kind of agitator. That's definitely a valid uh or a common strategy for a lot of reservoirs is just to have some kind of extra agitation.

[01:04:56]So yeah, maybe I can introduce that. I would I'd rather if I don't need to I'd rather not do it just because it adds more mechanical complexity. I like to keep things as simple as possible if they work. But you know yeah if I have to then that's something I can do as well. Uh yeah I agree mostly but it might be jammed and stop the process.

[01:05:27]Uh JB Lewis, I was thinking the same thing. Something to poke the balls in the hopper on each cycle. Yeah, push mechanism instead of the tray lowering and gravity, but pushing could become stuck the same way perhaps. Yeah, I think uh obviously people have been making hundreds of GBC modules over the years, probably thousands. This is definitely not a new problem that we're trying to solve. Uh, and it almost seems like most most uh strategies always develop some kind of issue. Uh, oh, Jay Tuker is in the house. Good morning.

[01:06:11]But that would need more timing to get time to get timing. Yeah. Yeah, I can show you the previous one I had.

[01:06:25]In the first version of this model, I actually had this uh feed mechanism which actually works pretty decently.

[01:06:33]And it basically it's got this uh this rotates which jostles the balls to try and unblock them. And this actually works pretty reasonably, but there's still occasionally sometimes when the balls get jammed a little bit.

[01:06:50]Um, but it probably works like 99%.

[01:06:54]Uh, and the one of the reasons I didn't reuse this one is actually it's a it's very complicated in here. Uh, well, not that it's all that complicated, but there's a lot of moving parts and I actually needed five steppers for this module module uh, instead of four. So, I didn't just want to make this longer. And also I just wanted to challenge myself to do something a bit different. Uh so I decided to go with this which actually the stepping mechanism is much simpler than on this model. Um but in theory the reservoir like I could have just used the same reservoir.

[01:07:38]But I thought I would try this instead just to give myself something more interesting to work on.

[01:14:45]Uh the M the Red is missing rounded bricks on his base. Wasn't it done last week? Oh, no. I never rebuilt red. I only rebuilt the other ones. Uh the red one I I didn't got to because it was connected to the to the intake and everything. I didn't rebuild it last week. Uh so he still needs to be rebuilt.

[01:15:07]And actually, I did tweak I did tweak a little bit of the design of the there's like a stopping mechanism to basically like make sure the robots don't overshoot the targets. I kind of rejig that a little bit last week. Uh so I think only I think only two of them have the new stopping mechanism.

[01:15:35]Uh yeah, it's a very minor thing that most of the time isn't noticeable, but uh but anyway, so yeah, a few of them still need a little bit of work.

[01:15:47]And also, yeah, I still need to decorate the very bottom of these pedestals just to cover up the studs mostly. Um, and then uh obviously I still need to rebuild the intake just to cuz right now it's still kind of like prototypy. It doesn't actually look that great. Same with the drive module.

[01:16:12]I kind of I think this is like the third version I built and I think I'm finally happy with all the mechanics of it. But I still need to do the final design just to make sure it all can be built uh well like in a logical order and make sure it looks actually good. Also, it needs a little bit more reinforcement. I think if you're running it for hours on end, it just needs to be like rock solid.

[01:19:04]Wow, that wasn't very great. Actually dropped a lot. Uh, when red lets go, the ball seems to need to settle down. Yeah, the red isn't releasing very well. Seems to jostle quite a bit. seems the viations from the robot's movements caused the ball cups to shake a bit, so they're a bit off sometimes.

[01:19:29]Green's ball doesn't jiggle that way.

[01:19:36]There's clearly perhaps some minor adjustment on the shovels for some of them.

[01:21:48]Yeah, that's definitely another variable that and actually the rubber bands that are on here, I haven't replaced any of them in at least a year. So, some of them are probably getting a bit old.

[01:25:27]Yeah, I think they're uh so that is the speed they should be at. Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm pretty sure this should be about one ball per second.

[01:25:44]Yeah, the intake seemed to work pretty good. Um, yeah, it still might need a few little minor tweaks, but uh, for the most part, uh, yeah, it seems fine in terms of the mechanics. So, I think I'll probably stick with that.

[01:26:03]Obviously, like I said, I'll rebuild it just so that it's nice and solid and has like a cohesive style.

[01:26:13]I think the stepper mechanism is like I've never really had any problems with it for a while. So, I think that's good. And then the drive system seems pretty nice, too. So, yeah, they just need to be all rebuilt. Same with the red guy. Needs to be rebuilt.

[01:26:30]And I might tweak the the look of some of the robots, obviously. Well, you can't see actually, but uh the orange one the orange one is missing a head. Uh so it needs a head. Last time we put some space babies on it. Oh, and actually I did order uh Yeah, actually I think uh we're probably pretty good with with this for today. And I think I probably will order more of these cups.

[01:27:05]At least I'll try it on Sunday. Well, actually, I won't get them Sunday. I have one other cup design, which is using these uh cylinders.

[01:27:15]It's not quite as good, though. I think the ball the balls take a long time to settle down inside them. They jostle a lot. So, it causes some problems if they don't settle before the next uh robot comes to pick them up. So, I'm not actually too happy with that one. It It mostly works, but it just seems to result in a little bit more uh a little bit more drops.

[01:27:51]But yeah, it's pretty cool. Uh I did actually get a couple sets in the mail.

[01:28:05]I got the rocking plants, which we'll build on stream at some point. Maybe we'll do something with them. Uh, but I also got my little Mandalorian speeder with Grou. I think we'll just pop this open now and see what baby Grou looks like compared to the space babies.
