Handcrafted skateboard decks are made using a precise 7-ply maple construction process: two horizontal crossbands provide strength in all directions, while five vertical grain plies (two face plies with no blemishes and three core plies that can have blemishes) create the deck's structure. The boards are pressed for 24 hours under pressure, then cured for 7 days in a stack of their own concave shape. Graphics are applied using hand-carved lino blocks rather than heat transfer methods, which preserves the bond between wood and glue that holds the board together. This traditional approach ensures durability and longevity compared to mass-produced factory boards.

How Skateboards SHOULD be Made: Handcrafted Skateboard decks made Live at Life Skateboards Workshop
Added:pressing some skateboards.
Right.
So, like I said, my name is Casper Jones. I handcraft skateboards for life skateboards, and you're watching Days with Casper. There we go. All hooked up.
Let's get this hat on and let's get started here. So, today on Days with Casper, we are going to be loading up the long and the standard press for Life Skateboards. If you're unfamiliar with the channel, I handcraft skateboard decks made just for you. And they are available at lifeskateboard.com.
Again, that is lifeskateboard.com.
All right, if you're watching this after the live, thank you so much for boosting my watch hours. Uh, I'm going to start off here plugging somebody. This is just a really cool shoes that I've got.
What's up, man? Thanks for tuning in.
So, this company sent me some really cool shoes. Vivo a Vivo barefoot uh barefoot footwear.
I haven't really skated in them because I skate high tops, but I have been walking around in these everywhere and working in these and they have been helping my ankles, helping my feet. Um, besides the injury, I haven't really had much uh nerve pain. Also, shout out White Castle socks. important. I have no clue where they came from. All righty.
And after we're done with this here, remember just go check out Vivo Barefoot for me. They're really cool. They're not paying me. They just sent me in uh Casper's Keeper some shoes. And they're really, really good. And I was kind of skeptical of that barefoot stuff, but here we are. All right. So, the first thing we are going to get started with here today is actually pulling the veneer that will be the wife boards. Uh so, these are going to be standard seven ply boards. We've got our standard which is 925 and below and some longs that are going to be up to 1175. So I have already separated some stuff up here.
Let's see. Let's go with a brown dyed bottom veneer, a red, and two pinks. We've got uh plenty of naturals in there. Um I want, like I said, I already separated these. So these are going to be your bottom plies.
These are vertical grains that have no blemishes on them. Those are called your bottom faces. These are going to be our top faces. And we're going to do natural on these. So let's throw a top face on each of these. I cut these down before we started the live today. Make this a little bit easier.
All right. Now, the next step is putting three cores in each of these. A core is another vertical grain that can have some blemishes. Uh now we do all natural on our wide ones. Sometimes our standard, but today I've got some core that's colored. So we can toss that right in the middle. So we will let's throw a red with the pink. Kind of contrast that. Do the opposite with this red here. And we'll throw in a yellow with each of the other ones.
And the last thing we have to do is just grab some natural core. So again, these are pieces of veneer with vertical grains that can have some blemishes on them.
See, like that right there.
Who's better, Tony Hawk or Chad Muska?
Uh, they're different. completely different. You got a vert. You're asking about a vert skater and a street skater that skated a lot of transition for uh for competition.
Who's better? They're just different.
Very different.
They did both skate the uh bowl that I go and visit together, though. That's when Chad broke his leg out in Columbia Station, Ohio. But again, I think they're just different.
That's a That's a hard question, though.
All right, the next step is these cross bands right here. These are horizontal grains that give the board strength in every direction since we are putting the grains against each other.
We are setting up four of these. Then we're going to empty the press, start gluing them up, and start pressing them.
Uh, the only thing for me to shape here today is my board.
Got everything else knocked out already.
So, we might get to shaping, but I do have a backup already right now. Uh, but there are two of my boards that I could be doing the graphic on. So, we might see what's up with that. All right. So, there are our four layups right here ready to go. Let's set these aside for when we are ready to press and let's build up the four longboard presses.
Andy Anderson or Rodney Mullen. Again, very different influ influence.
Just different at different times. I think they're very similar people though. Um Rodney Mullen did things that people didn't think you could do on a skateboard and so does Andy Anderson.
Uh, they both do it because they want to and that's it. That's just how their minds work.
Um, again, that's not a better thing.
Skateboarding is pretty subjective.
All right.
So, let's see here. I went and cut down everything for core today as well on these. And we are building these up just like we did the standards. Uh there's just not any color veneer in these guys here. These are all natural all the way through.
All right. So, there's those. Now, let's grab these cross bands here.
And you're going to notice these cross bands are slightly too long.
That's all right.
Easy when the grain goes with where you need to snap it.
Not another trip to the saw.
Don't need to measure anything.
Just snap it off real quick.
cuz having it sticking out the ends of the presses is not much of an issue.
It's more of uh when they come up short, that's when it's an issue.
So caps lock. It's this thing.
Oh, all right, buddy. That's really weird. I'm pretty sure if you had that conversation with Chad Muska and Tony and Tony Hawk, they would probably be laughing at you right about now because that's it's a it's a that's a very aggressive stance when I complimented both of them. But it sounds like you have more of something against Tony Hawk than for Chad Muska if you got to say that.
That's agreed.
I don't I don't agree with that though.
Not a flash and a pan either. Definitely a influence on the culture as a whole. Uh again, different times, different eras.
Anyway, I'm handcrafting skateboard decks. You got some question about skateboards, I got them for you. Uh you can get these boards at lifecateboard.com.
Uh next step we're going to do is empty out these presses here. It looks like I've got to adjust my tripod. Looks like it's a little loose on us today.
There we go.
Neato. Um anyway, uh so next time I go to Cleveland and skate with Chad Musco, what are we going to What would you like me to ask him? Cuz again, I don't know. I don't like talking about people that I know like that. That's pretty dumb.
But anyway, very influential skateboarder in my opinion.
No insults towards either of them.
Handcrafted skateboard decks made right here.
Welcome to a life skateboard stream where you won't see me talk [ __ ] on skateboarders, but you will see me talk [ __ ] on skateboards. That's for sure.
Factory boards are absolute garbage.
Craft boards are better. All right. So, right now I'm just going to be emptying out the press right here. This is the first thing we got to do.
I had a Sharpie. I have a Sharpie. Here it is.
Uh, we're marking these for what date they went into the press.
That way they get 7 days to cure. We know when they're cured, and we know when they can be cut. Now, these guys are going to go sit right here behind you in a stack of their own concaves. We got a big old stack of longs right here, as well as stacks of wides, standards, youths, all that fun stuff.
Uh 714 26 long. All right, we're going to set this right over there.
Ooh, this has a awful split. I don't even know if that's one I'm going to skate.
That's what happens sometimes.
That's a bad split. That's never reaching a customer right there. Never.
That gets set aside.
Big old split. I'm writing big old split on it.
Sam will be happy about that. Right.
7 14 26. All right. So, that guy's emptied out. And what's cool is there wasn't really that much excess glue on these separators here. Separator, I hardly know her. So, we get to just hop right over to the standard press. Empty that guy out. And then we can go straight to gluing.
What? Why would anyone want a gator?
No, that's gross.
No, no, no gators.
No, we don't even talk about him. We don't even talk about The only reason we would talk about Gator in any way, shape, or form is to remind people that he was a monster and he murdered someone. And uh there's not really going to be retribution for that. Uh the gator collectors kind of bum me out to be honest. Nobody get a gator board.
But hold up.
Do independent 159s fit on a 9 in? Yes, they will.
Wait, it's 159. It's been so long. I'm on a 655s. Those are nine.
15 is one. Is it 169?
Man, now you got me thinking. Uh, look up the independent chart. I don't have it memorized.
Uh, it's 100 p.m. here.
Yeah. My favorite joke is uh I don't know cuz Gator can't skate street. There was a guy on Facebook for a long time that was pretending to be Gator from prison like selling surf bags and [ __ ] It was It was pretty funny just kind of making a mockery of him.
Honestly, I think that if Vision ever did any type of reprints or if anybody makes money from reprints from him, it should just go straight to the family.
But that's just me. That's just a That's just me, Casper. Anyway, 7:14 26. These guys are were put in the press on that day. And I'm going to put them in a stack of standards.
Again, big old shout out to Vivo barefoot shoes making me feel good while I work.
I was a little bit uh sketched out by these, thinking that maybe uh they would mess with how my skate shoes felt since I tend to wear my skate shoes a little bit tight and wrapped around my feet real tight. Um I like Crockets tightened down pretty hard. Uh but it has had zero negative effect. I am getting back on a board today thankfully. Got an old old Bones therapy knee brace on right now.
seems to be helping out a lot.
Uh, so I'll probably end up at the park tonight. It's been a couple of days.
Going to do a couple of tricks to catch up on the daily thing and then I'll be back on track.
All right. So, these guys have been in the press for 24 hours. They're going to cure for 7 days and then the shape's going to get cut out. So, before we get started here on gluing, I'm going to show you guys the next room. Uh, gluing is a little bit timesensitive, so I don't like to uh hop around and give you a tour while I'm working on that part. So, let's go in here and I'll show you some stuff. What's up, bud?
Thanks for that. 159 or 875. So, yeah, looks like 169 is where you need to go.
Yeah, old Bones Therapy is rad. They're awesome. Um, Gavin's Fetlick gifted me a pair. Uh, because in my knee pads when I skate vert, if I knee slide, my kneecap pops over. All right, this is where we shape all the boards. So, you guys are going to watch some pressing today. Uh, those boards are going to cure for 24 hours. I'm sorry. They're going to press for 24 hours and then cure for 7 days.
After that, they're going to come in here. Sam, the owner and operator of Life Skateboards, comes right over here.
Adds truck holes into that uncut that looks like this.
There's it with truck holes. Once the truck holes are on there, he can come in here. All of these are shaped templates, not boards. Shaped templates. That's why they're so flat. Um, he can attach these to the uncut through this hardware right here. And then he runs that template right along here.
Cuts out the shape.
Thanks. Yeah, there you go. Thanks, Nightbot.
But yeah, there's the uh bearing right there. Runs that along there and cuts out the shape. After that, I bring the edge to a 90 on the belt sander right here. It looks like it's seen better days. Looks like we need a new belt soon. Uh round it off right here. I make tons of shorts of me working on this right here cuz I think that's really fun to watch. Uh, we This has an air bladder in it. If I were shaving today, I'd air that up. Clean it up here. Clean it up on the Mac wheel. And then one more step on the orbital before we apply graphics.
Uh, here's an example of a graphic cut out of a board right there.
Hey, thank you. I'm just doing the work that I love.
Um, and then here's some finished boards right here. So these are all finished boards.
We apply our graphics with handcarved lino blocks carved by local artists New Balance. Nah, I've got I've got my Vivo barefoot footwear on and I'm going to put my Crockets on when I'm done with work and go skate. Finally. I've been wanting that. All right, let's uh clear this table off here. Uh while we're here for a second, Q Skate Park on the west side of Indianapolis, there's a skate camp for the next couple of weeks. Um check them out. qskatepark.com.
Uh I help out with the lessons there.
It's pretty fun. Uh Justin Hutchkins, Levi, Brent, they all help out as well.
It's really fun there. Uh the kids have a great time. Check out Q Skate Park.
There's weekly and uh there's weekly and there are uh daily rates. Um I really do enjoy helping out with the camps. Uh being a part of the next generation of skateboarding is always awesome.
I should go to camp. I work at the camps.
Well, again, Vivo AI footwear. Vivo Barefoot Footwear did some really cool stuff. This feels like I'm walking around barefoot. I keep forgetting what I'm doing. Oh, I'm drinking an energy drink.
No. FEMA camps, buddy. No. Skate park camps. Skateboarding.
Skateboarding. It's a It's a summer camp for skateboards.
[snorts] All right, let's get to it here. Going to probably have to open up a glue bottle with the most important knife you've ever seen.
Solomon, I'm going to have to ask you to clarify what you're asking. Can I do a back do a kick flip? I am not going to do one right now. I don't have a board.
If you want to see me skating, you can uh go to my page and check out some videos of me skating. Um, there's actually a pretty fun video if you want to check it out of uh me and my buddies skating the 14.6 and 13.6. 6 in wide board. I think I did kick flip, shove it, tail grab, burial flip, big spin, full cab, and trey foot on that thing, which is a monster.
No, I meant clarify what you're asking, my friend. I I just genuinely don't know what you're asking me. Um, what I was talking about is that is a Q skate that is a summer camp for kids over at Q skate park. Something that would have been awesome when I was a kid. Um, I'm grateful to have an opportunity to help out with it. I will be there on Friday helping, but there is a daily or weekly rate. Uh, the guys that are helping the other days are awesome as well. And Q skate park is very important to me and a lot of people in the in the uh India area. It's our only indoor here. So, uh, we do have an indoor bowl up north, but got to drive an hour and a half to get to that one. I've been going to Q skate park since it was a mini ramp and a couple of kickers.
All right. Anyway, [clears throat] so we're going to break down what's inside your skateboard here, cuz that's what I'm here for.
Skateboard decks right here. So, inside your board, you've got seven pies of maple. You've got your two vertical grains like this. There's two different kinds. You've got a face with no blemishes and a core that can have blemishes where the blemishes are going to get filled in by the glue. Uh the next ply is going to be your crossband.
That's what we showed you over there with the horizontal grain.
Any discount codes? No, my friend. Our prices are exactly where they're where they need to be at. Uh this is as cheap as they can be. you are getting a handcrafted deck. Uh but you might have been adding add-ons. So, uh things that cost a little more money are going to be your um collage graphic. You can just get our basic graphics, which is going to be any of our graphics in one color. Uh you could have maybe picked a fade, which is going to add a couple bucks to it. Um adding extra plies and things like that. Also applying everything. Um, and then your parts are going to be pretty up there. I believe we do have a deal though right now on the website that's if you click on make my life complete, uh, that will give you a complete. Our decks are $75 for our popsicles and then the shapes go up from there. [snorts] What is going on, dude?
Solomon, I'm going to go ahead and have to kick you from the chat. And which sucks because I think you've been here a couple of times, man.
Yeah, buddy. I'm sorry, man. Like, I thought you were asking me a question, buddy. I I had seen you in here a couple of times, but unfortunately, you have been hidden from the channel. Um, I'm happy to answer questions for people, but that was really weird. It's like somebody just had a breakdown in my chat.
[snorts] Thank you. I thought it was too. Was he lose? Was he mad about the price? I'm so confused.
It's It's a pretty reasonable price.
Yeah. Thank you, Wolf. But yeah, there aren't really discount codes. We're going to hop back to that. That was very strange. I I hope that Solomon finds some wisdom sometime soon and figures out what he was trying to say.
What's [snorts] up, Bando? I am making skateboard decks.
Thank you, Kelly. I appreciate it. Um I I mean I have not gotten to complete myself in a very very very long time. So handcrafted skateboard decks.
Really? Is that I didn't know that's how you did do is there like a grain pattern for Kevlar or anything? I'm not even sure how that works. Is that like a weave pattern?
Do you cross the patterns against each other for strength?
Hey there, Bando. If you have a question, I'm here to answer those questions. I've answered your questions already, but I am right here handcrafting skateboard decks and teaching about it.
Thank you, dude. I appreciate you.
[snorts] Thank you. Thank you, Andrea. and Andreas. Andre, don't don't leave because I pronounced your name wrong.
Um, I'm Casper. I handcraft skateboard decks. Most of the time on the channel here, you will catch me handcrafting skateboards. Um, other times you'll catch me at the dog park. Um, I have been doing some video game streaming and might try to stick with that. I'm not sure. Just a way to kind of keep up with everybody and update everybody.
Do you do you have light skin? Um, yeah, a lot of people do. I don't I don't think I have, you know, there might be there's a delay on my end from the chat, so maybe you're just coming across some um chats where there's an extreme delay. Give me one second here, guys. I placed my tape right in front of me. Uh, so every time we glue up one of these, we're going to tape the ends of it.
That's so when it it's in the press, it won't slide around on us.
Uh, we're going to do this four times.
Now, I will say though, uh, there are going to be points while I'm working that I cannot keep up with the chat. So, feel free to ask again. Obviously, don't spam it. I can tell the difference.
What? Bando, what are you trying to say?
I'm so confused. We did we get some weirdos in here today. We were We were on a great streak.
Nuna, I think I missed a question from you.
Thanks. I like it in here, too. Uh we spaced this uh we this was an empty shell when we moved in. Me, Sam, AJ, and some friends built this out. Um it's got a loft above me right here. This is a big pole barn that we're in right now.
And then these are all my old riders and the space on the wall back there. Those are examples of finished boards. Uh you can get these boards at lifeskateboard.com.
Um, sorry, but I am currently working.
You can see me skate probably later today, but uh you can go to my channel and see me skate. If I had an uncut or something right in front of me right now, what I usually do is make it do a kick flip just for you. [snorts] Thank you. I appreciate it.
I'm stoked to be back to skating again.
Um, if you guys didn't know, I had a surgery for a hernia repair that had probably been bothering me for a very, very long time.
Uh, and then about a week before recovery, I got hit by a semi. So, I am finally returning to skateboarding at 100% health again. Uh, I had a little bit of a knee injury that set me back, but we are back to it. Today is my first day back at the park since the knee. So, I am excited to go back there and I wanted to work on I got a line in my head that I really want. [snorts] Can you get a three ply?
I'll send you know what, man? I know where you live, so I'll go ahead and drop you off some beautiful three ply $40 toilet paper just for you.
Thank you. Yeah, it seems to be everything seems to be working out pretty well on recovery. I'm learning that that hernia was probably going on for a very long time.
Speci things just seem a lot easier now than they used to be.
[snorts] probably a lot easier when there's a part of your intest or part of your stomach trying to come out. It's not fun.
So, you all don't know that's yard Dad in the chat right there. Uh Yard Dad, Zach, he's um helped out a lot with events financially and just organizing. Um it's he does Yard Dad's cash grabs. If you've seen those at my events, they should be at more events than mine.
Um hopefully that picks up elsewhere soon. Uh but basically he throws money at people to make them skateboard. He's done a lot already and uh he's rad.
[snorts] All right. Now we just got to tape up either end of this. Do that two more times after this and then we can load them into the press. Uh remember, we're just loading uh two of the presses today.
Shaping is not that pertinent.
[snorts] It's only my board that needs to be shaped.
And I do have a backup sitting right over here. So, we might wait. Give me one second here, guys. I actually do have a fire going, so I need to go check on that real quick.
[snorts] I [snorts] can smell it. Smell the fire.
My fire is done being a fire. I'm okay with that, I guess.
Did somebody do that?
Did somebody advertise their channel on my channel?
Oh, yeah. Nightbot. Uh, so Nightbot is a chatbot uh that I don't remember how to turn off. Um, but I mean it puts the website out there quite a bit.
Uh there's going to be a lot of times while I'm working that I can't see the chat. I can't respond to what you're saying. So, Nightbot helps out with that quite a bit. Uh but it is. But reminder, too, I am just a worker here. Sam owns the company.
Thank you for looking out, though. I was like, dang, is somebody actually doing that? People do do that.
Makes me kind of want to do it.
How would you guys feel if I started doing like midnight video game streams?
Like around like 11:30, midnight, hopped on session and just hung out and talk [ __ ] for an hour or something.
I'm thinking I might start doing that.
We'll see. Very grateful for the $20 direct donation that happened on one of those video game streaming over the last couple days. So they paid for our breakfast.
After today's after today's pressing, uh we are likely going to be swapping over to the youth mold in the long press. Uh until we get another veneer order, I have been loading up as many longs as I can.
[snorts] You know it. Hey, no apologies at all.
Literally, you were looking out for me.
Like, Jen, you had me a little confused, but you don't need to apologize. I promise.
I'd go for That was yesterday. I would go for some food. I keep forgetting to eat. Dang it. I reminded myself about food, but they bait. Let me think. I think I was streaming two nights ago.
Somebody donated some and got to wake Casper's keeper up and get her breakfast in the morning. It was nice.
Thank you, Raymond.
All right. Now, part of the reason that you're watching me glue by hand right here is because um we want to give you full glue coverage on every side of every ply inside of your deck. And that's why we can guarantee against DAM here at Life Skateboards. Uh DAM is delamination.
It's when the pies start to separate later. A glue machine is extremely efficient because it gets things super fast, but it gets both sides of your veneer. So, this one, the one that just got glue all over my hair, is uh going to get missed in a glue machine. We don't like the idea of that.
So, we do it by hand.
And I'm just some guy. I don't know.
I've always had this very similar approach. I've just had this approach to social media for a long time. I'm going to be who I am. Um and it seems to have worked. Uh, I had severe severe social anxiety for a very very very very long time and I practiced uh talking in front of a camera to start off and uh it helped me a lot to the point where now you see where I'm at where I'm, you know, welcoming new people into skate parks when they come in there. I'm meeting all kinds of people, hanging out with people that I definitely would have been mid panic attack to hang out with before. So, I don't know. Uh, this whole being me thing on the internet just kind of is how I thought it was supposed to be.
I thought, oh, yes, you absolutely will see it pressed. Uh, so what we do is we glue up four of these so that there's two in each of the molds. So, after I'm done gluing this guy up right here, uh you I'll switch over to the long press and you'll actually see me raise it up and then we'll do the same thing with standards. Uh these guys aren't going to be as pretty when they get pressed. Uh the with them being all natural plies, but when we get to the standards, we've got some dyed veneer in there. What's really cool is the dyed veneer takes on uh it kind of bleeds a little bit. It takes so that the glue takes on some of the dye. So, while that's squeezing out, we get some purples, blues, reds squeezing out with this yellow glue. And that's if I give it a little too too much glue.
[snorts] Now, if you are new to the channel, there are some other things that we talk about here on a regular basis. Um, I am an addict in recovery. Um, so we talk about sobriety quite a bit because I believe that uh sharing your story helps out people that may be in positions that you've already been in. Um, I know I wouldn't be alive today if people weren't honest and open about their addictions and their experiences with it. Uh, these chats tend to turn into a safe place to talk about those things.
Uh, so if you do ever feel the need to be sharing stuff like that, feel free to share it here. If anybody's a dick, I will immediately kick them. Don't care how long they've been here. If they've uh even if they're people that uh have been real nice otherwise, soon as you mock somebody in that position, you're out of here.
Uh hi.
Just me. You see has a safe place. Yeah, it is definitely. Is Is the place that you live not safe? Dude, that's a strange thing to announce on the internet. Uh that's scary because that's your own home. That's weird.
Rough.
Thanks. I'll probably be back at LP this evening.
That is super strange.
Who would go on the internet and be like mock someone for making something safe?
That's so strange.
Uh making some skateboards. Uh life skateboards actually. If you go to lifekateboard.com, you can get these handcrafted decks made exactly for you and made to order.
Uh you hopped on at the exact right time. In a second here, I will be loading these directly into the press and actually raising the presses up.
We've glued up four of these so far.
We went a couple weeks with no weirdos in the chat and then they got weird.
Yeah, you know it.
I wish I could make rocket ships like this.
Yeah, Zach, that's what I'm saying, dude. Like, that's a strange thing to say. Did we just get a strange admission on the internet from a stranger? That was weird. Somebody needs to check that dude's basement.
[snorts] Yeah, sure. I'll be in it.
Hey, congratulations. Whatever your goal is, as long as you're getting to it, that's what matters.
I mean, okay. All right. Weird.
All right. My version of weird. When I say something's weird in a negative way, I'm not talking about the good weird like me. I think am I a good I'm a good weird. I'm weird as [ __ ] dude.
I'm talking about the guy that just hopped in here and decided to announce to the world that he does not want his home to be a safe space. That was super strange. I'm still stuck on that thought. Like, man, incels really tell on themselves really quickly. It's It's really sad to be honest.
I try so hard.
[snorts] Oh, it's him.
Dude, I am so confused. We're talking about safe space. for talking about sobriety. You, sir, need to have your basement checked. I'm going to go ahead and kick you real quick. Uh cuz that's You're just strange. Bye-bye.
Yeah, exactly, Barnes. Exactly. That's where we're at.
Yeah, we tried. I I think we need to drop him off at the zoo. Let him go visit the chimpanzeee exhibit or the alligator exhibit. or one of those animals that'll, you know, like eat them or something. I'll take that.
Anyway, we're making skateboard decks right here.
All right, [snorts] that's a that's that's safe.
What is What is with you and bees lately, Zach? Because you have left two comments on my posts lately about bees, and I'm wildly confused. He's over here like I the bees. That was it was what's inside your skateboard and you left a comment that said something like bees.
Don't forget about the bees. I have no clue what what your obsession with bees is, Zach, but I'm not against it. I'm here for it. I'll be your Did you watch the bee movie and have an epiphany? [snorts] because I need you to understand that was an unhealthy relationship between a bee and a human. That's all that was. I hope one is too. I bet it's already pressed.
All righty.
There's that. That's aligned there. Now, we're going to slide these in here.
These plastic sheets right here just separate the boards. Uh we call them a separator. Separator? I hardly know her.
Um, if you don't think I'm gonna say that over and over and over and over and over and over again, you do not know me. I don't come up with new jokes. I just say the same ones until they're annoying and then wait a little bit and say them again. They're funny [snorts] again.
Sure does.
I got a riddle for you guys. Are you ready?
You ready? And I'm gonna make you think about it and I'm not going to explain it to any of you.
Yeah. No. Too early for Beyblades.
Um, it's important. Here's the joke.
It's a It's a riddle. All right. Two guys are digging in a rock quarry. The other guy looks at the other one and says, "Where's your shovel?" The other guy says, "Sure does. I said that really poorly." Let's try that again. I got a riddle for you. Two guys are digging in a rock quy. One guy says to the other guy, "Where's your shovel?" The other guy says, "Sure does."
Now you guys can figure that out while I'm pressing these boards. Okay, I'm not even going to look at the chat. I just want you to understand the joke, cuz that was the joke.
I want you to understand as well that Sam, the owner and operator of Life Skateboards, really enjoys telling that joke and not giving you an answer to it.
Sure does.
[sighs] [gasps] You know it, guys. I'm here.
And what what bothers me about it is that I don't think it's a good joke, but it pissed me off so much when I figured out what it was and when I finally got it that I was like, you know what? I can't be the only one to suffer from this. So now you guys have to suffer.
Sure does.
Sure does.
Two guys are digging in a rock quarry.
One guy looks at the other and says, "Where's your shovel?"
Other one says, "Sure does."
I like that. That's a good one, Damon.
But the the issue here is that none of you have gotten it yet. And that's the hard part that we're dealing with.
If one of you besides Sam gets it, I will uh give this Okay.
Nope.
All right. So, I'm going to explain it just for you guys. I can't I can't not explain it because now I want you all to be all 75 of you to annoy the [ __ ] out of your friends with this cuz you got to it works in person cuz they're going to be real mad at you because you're just going to keep repeating it. All right.
Oh, that's the best reason to have to leave, dude. Go play skate. Absolutely.
All right. So, two guys are digging in a rock, Corey. One guy looks at the other and says, "Where is your shovel?" He's not asking, "Where is your shovel?" He says, "It wears your shovel." Like, it wears your shovel down. The other guy just says, "Sure does." And it pissed me off that it was that simple. And that Sam took me had me thinking about that for so damn long.
Go piss off all your friends.
Go piss off all your friends.
You guys weren't quick enough.
Sam's not gonna fire me. Only 75 people saw that. You guys are all over the world. It's okay.
You guys are just going to hear Sam bust through here.
You guys are just going to hear Sam bust through here and beat the crap out of me. He's not even commenting yet. He is currently sprinting from the studio to come beat the crap out of me.
I'm sorry.
I like that here at Life Skateboards, the process of making the skateboard is not a secret.
Do it. It'll bum them out so much.
I feel bad now.
You know me.
I'm over here breaking rules. What is You think I was going to follow rules?
It's a little hot. It's a little toasty.
In fact, I need to go turn on the compressor or air the fan.
There we go. Give me a little more air flow.
Oh, dude. See, that's what I was wondering. That's what I wanted to know.
Yes. N. Yes. Na.
You definitely need to be bothering the [ __ ] out of all of your co-workers with that. See, Sam, there's an opport There was an opportunity to spread this horrible, horrible thing around, and we did it pretty quietly.
I don't know because Mr. Kater I'm trying to figure that out.
Oh no, it's just a little toasted here because it's toasty.
Powell would love me to work with them.
Well, guess what? No, I'm cool. I work for Life Skateboards, making the best handcrafted skateboards you can. See, instead of jumping to non-wood construction to make our boards better, we looked at things and said, "Huh, where's the industry screwing up and we hand rolled the glue. We did long press and cure times. We did a deep concave.
We did made to order. We do heat transfer." Just kidding. We don't do a heat transfer cuz heat transfers suck.
We do lin printing and we make them for you.
Hey Jeffrey, that was awesome. Do you just pop into random lives and give positive things to say? Cuz I'm going to read that out loud right here. To whomever reads this, I'm proud of you and you matter. You are loved and cared about regardless of when the voice in the back of your head says you're worthless and a failure or burden. It's a lie. Don't listen. That's amazing advice to give to strangers at random.
Feel free to sprinkle my chat with beautiful things like that all the time because you never know who's reading it.
You never know.
Uh, molds were CNC cut.
But that's a, you know, you just brought something up to me. That's awesome.
Um, I don't know. That's why like in comments on social media and stuff when I'm talking about helping people or even talking about sobriety and things like that, I overexlain and overexlain because you never know who could be reading that not responding. You Jeff, I'm seriously man.
I'm going to pin that.
Thank you, Jeff.
Thank you. That's awesome, buddy. Thank you so much. Positivity and spreading it around.
You might you might have saved somebody's life today, Jeff. And you never know. And the cool thing is is you'll never know.
And if you just keep putting positive things out there, you have no clue the immense impact you could be having that you'll never see. That's beautiful.
Thank you for doing that.
No, I like maple skateboard life.
I don't know if they can. I have no clue. I think there's some issues with my mod stuff, too. So, I need to figure that all out. Yeah, great lakes or Canadian maple to be specific. And why does it matter? Because you want something with slow growth and long winters. uh gives you a tighter grain and a less porous wood. Getting some more glue on here.
What's good, man? Thanks for popping in.
We're just loading up the standard press today.
Wow. Turning the fan on the other in the other room really made a significant difference. Uh and if you guys are enjoying what you're watching, make sure you double tap that screen for me. Let YouTube know you like it. uh turn on notifications for me. And like I said, I think I might start streaming um at night. So, if you want to pop on for those, feel free. Uh these guys are a standard seven ply. All of our boards are seven pies of Great Lakes or Canadian maple. Um our our youth boards do come as a standard seven, but you can get a six, seven, or eight upon request. Uh you can go to lifeskateboard.com and get those boards yourself. Now, if you do catch me repeating things that I've said or correcting myself, um I am genuinely just trying to make some shorts out of these lives. I really like having the opportunity to share uh all this information with you guys, show everything to you guys, and answer your questions. Uh but it's been really nice that I've been able to turn these lives into shorts. Um because I also enjoy making videos. So yeah, I will definitely do that then.
Sounds good. Oxy, I mean, there's only a few people in there, but we'll figure it out. I think I'll probably just try to stream every night. Uh, probably besides Monday nights since we got to be up early on Tuesday mornings.
Uh, tomorrow, jeez, what do I have to do tomorrow?
I got a lot I got to do. I got to go get the plates and everything, the BMV.
Uh, I got to change my oil and then we are getting the car fixed on Wednesday finally.
Do I have skate? Yeah, I have skate.
Um, uh, I don't know. I don't know the answer to that question. Sorry.
YouTube man, thank you so much for popping in here. Uh, hopefully you catch me live again soon. Uh, you have been great and interactive the whole time. I greatly appreciate you.
All right, we're going to tape this one up here and then we will load them into the press.
Nice.
Oh, uh, Zach, I cannot stream 76 anymore. Um, I am solo streaming session. I need a capture card to do the rest.
I am going to Uh, I've basically just been setting up at a spot trying to get [snorts] a clip for 45 minutes and that's it. I've been making little shorts out of it.
Uh, but 76 does not stream directly from the Xbox. I am going to need a capture card for that. is one of the finding out it's one of the hardest games to stream.
Ah, I see. I see what you mean.
There you go. Yeah. I don't even know if I can stream that because it's online.
I did. I do remember that.
Um, I'll have to figure it out. Maybe I I did redownload the new skate game.
Um, if it streams well, I'll do it.
And hopefully Lori wants to hang out again. Last night she did not want to hang out on the couch with me.
Yeah. I don't know. I've just been like it. I get a clip in my head and then I want to see it. So, I like the fact that that's how session works.
No, it's all good. You can keep trying.
This is the You know how that one dude was real upset that we make a safe space for people? Uh, inadvertently, this is also actually no, it's not a safe space for jokes, but we won't be very mad at you for puns.
We might make fun of you for a joke, but puns, puns are where it's at.
Do a kick flip. Um, I am in my head right now. I'm just working right now, but you can see me skate if you'd like.
I'm going to run by home and then run to the skate park after work.
Or maybe maybe I'll go home and get a lot of sleep and then skate through the night since it's supposed to be really hot.
Thanks, man.
We'll figure it out. Um, so it is very difficult for me to keep up with what's going on in the actual video game itself because I have to do a lot of things uh to keep everything connected since I'm doing it through Lighteam. But I think we'll figure out skate or session depending on who's on there tonight. If we get on there and if I get back in time, like I said, we might not stream on Monday nights uh because we have to be up early on Tuesday, but I'll figure it out.
seems I mean it's not going to hurt for me to go live for like 15 20 minutes at a time and bust out a little short clip or something. So, we'll figure it out.
Thank you.
Uh yeah, I miss night skating, man. So yeah, we've got uh our skate park at Lawrence. If you haven't seen it, it's awesome. It's beautiful. I'm a little partial to it because I was a big part of the paint project that got that thing done. Um and I am so stoked on it. But uh we got some amazing lights there.
Lights up the whole park at night.
And uh we've been in active talks with the city. So there was a point where they were talking about not letting people in there at night. We had a really good talk about how having a place to go uh for wholesome activities like skateboarding when the alternatives aren't the best in our area uh is [snorts] always a good you just you need something like that. So um I have a lot of late night talks about sobriety at the park. [snorts] I really love the community out there.
It's I don't know. I really love Lawrence as a whole. Just cuz I've lived in in Indianapolis my whole life. Um mainly Speedway area, then the south side, downtown.
Um lived on East Side for a little bit.
But I don't know, I started uh working with the Lawrence community and Lawrence in general, and I just love it. Like Indianapolis as a whole is probably one of the most diverse communities out there.
just have a lot of absolutely everything and I do love that. But in skateboarding in Lawrence, it's very everything. I love that.
720 fakey. See, have I ever done a 720?
I mean, I guess when I loop out of my 540 bonuses, I do a 720. I don't mean to, but uh with I really don't know about many jobs with housing. I would check them out. I would also check out what's going on with our state right now as far as our local government.
I'm not too too aware of all of it, but I'm also not happy with what I'm aware of. So, thank you.
Oh, you're from South Ben. That's rad, dude. You got an awesome skate park. Um, let's see.
Man, we uh when I rode for dead ends, Dead End skateboards. We took a trip up to South Bend and skated your uh the bowl there is weird. The wall on the bowl has like waves in it. Like it looks like they took chunks of concrete and slapped it on there and then maybe maybe pulled some butter out. But uh what a fun park.
That's cool. I got friends from there, too. The Mikos were from there. Uh Lyle on our team is up in Michigan.
That's really cool. And my parents actually just went on a camping trip up there.
I love how these lives I mean OB I do set a location for Indiana and obviously it's got a lot of skateboarding tags on it so it tends to find the right people.
We filtered through the weirdos pretty early on today, man. Yeah, I I mean I was I was not sober when I went. Uh I parttook in quite a few other things with random locals that were not even there to skate when I was there.
Uh but I mean they were nice at least.
The park was fun though. If I'm thinking correctly, there's a pyramid with a flat on the top. I did tre flip tail grab over that and then my buddy dislocated his knee on it.
Is that O'Brien?
Sam is is O'Brien the one with the like [snorts] slapped on um concrete.
If you guys didn't know, Sam in the chat right there is the owner and operator of Life Skateboards. Um, most people would be like, "Dang, my boss is watching me."
I'm like, "Cool. My boss is watching me.
Awesome person.
Heck yeah.
We to We went to some cool places up there. There's another DIY that's like middle of absolute nowhere up there that we got to skate.
180. What's that? What's a 180 with every single glued layer?
[snorts] Are you buying two $90 decks?
Is that what you're doing? If so, thank you very much. [snorts] Absolutely. Uh so my name is Casper Jones. I handcraft skateboards for Life Skateboards. Uh you're watching Life Skateboards Take Shape. Earlier in the live, we separated these into seven plies. Uh you got two horizontal grains and five vertical grains. Uh we glue up four of these right here, and we're going to take them right over here. Um, see, so those are all maple, great legs or Canadian maple right there, glued up and taped so that they'll stay separate and not slide around on us. And then this is the mold right here for our standard press. Uh, so this guy has kicks in it and then concave. Concave is your curve from edge to edge right here.
If you're unfamiliar with the skateboard, I will happily explain everything to you. Your kicks are your ends, your concaves right here. This is your mold. This whole thing is a press.
We're going to put a plastic separator in here to keep some of the excess glue off of the press itself. Set this guy in here and make sure it's nice and lined up. Now, you don't want to put more than three un uh three boards in each mold or it'll start losing concave, but glue has a dry time. So, I'm only going to be putting two in each mold.
so that we don't work into the dry time on the glue there.
Gives me the versatility of being able to talk to you guys as well. The option to do so. Now, we're going to slide in the upper part of the press. This is another mold.
So, the bottom of this is the same as this. Top of this is the same as this.
This gives us the option to press six total. We're going to be doing four today.
Let's throw another separator in there.
Separator. I hardly know her. Again, get used to that joke. It does not stop. I also have a respirator. And guess what?
I hardly know her either.
All right. So, let's get these all set in here and aligned. This upper part's going to be a little bit more tricky.
All right, good to go. So, let's get this other this upper separator in here.
And now we will raise these up by hand after we lock the jacks down. So, these guys are going to be Oops. Slid that right out of alignment right off the bat.
Now, how I how would I make this easier on myself? By not raising the jack up so much. That would probably help.
But I'm going to be real honest. I thought I had lowered these all the way.
All right.
Oh, yeah. Making life skateboards.
Sorry, I'm missing stuff.
Handcrafted skateboard decks made right here in Indiana. You can get these boards at lifeskateboard.com is here at Lifekateboards, we do everything in house. You're watching the boards get pressed right now. Uh so these guys will be under pressure for 24 hours and then they will cure in a stack of their own concave for 7 days. After 7 days, the board's cured and we're going to cut it out to order. So you're going to order a shape. You're going to pick your wheelbase. We're going to cut that out.
going to shape it and then we're going to apply the graphics with handcarved lino blocks. Uh the reason we do that is because heat transfers suck. Uh the majority of the industry uses a heat transfer to apply their graphics because it's a very efficient way to massproduce or just in general produce any graphic um photorealistic or not. However, applying that graphic uses heat. Uh heat weakens the bond the bond between wood and glue that holds the board together.
We don't want to do that to you. So, here at Life Skateboards, we apply them with handcarved lino blocks. And in a moment here, I'll be able to show you a finished board that's my own.
All right. So, these guys are great.
These guys are going to be under pressure for 24 hours. They will get out of the press and we will put them right over here. These guys are curing or cured.
Now, let me show you a finish board. You know it, you know. It's it's a pressing matter, you know. It's uh there's a lot of pressure here at work. It's a little jacked up, you know. I don't I don't really want to break the mold, though.
Puns. All right. Uh my skateboard.
Uh so this is my my deck right here.
It's finished up.
This is the uh bruised heel graphic right there with my prographic piece and uh Lor's face right there. Um I've got another board that I need to touch up right here before it goes to be shaped.
That is a lot of color in there. Where was the Oh, there we go.
There's the blimp that makes it mine.
Oh yeah, you got to love the dog. She's my be She's my best friend.
Um, so let's see here.
Looks like we might just take that board with us and call it a day.
See, I would love We love our deep concave. We do offer Mllo, though.
That's awesome. Um, so Lori is our dog.
And I'll go grab the graphic so you can see her a little better. Um, but we're done for today. Um, I'm going to come back and do that shaping on my own board another time. Um, very grateful to Sam for all that help. Uh, but let's let's tell the story on Lori real quick. Real quick. So, this is a graphic of Lori right here cut out. Um, so I volunteer with a nonprofit called Skate Park Respect. I clean skatep parks and work with the city to offset some of the costs for graffiti removal and stuff like that so they can invest that money back into the skate park rather than spend it on maintenance. Uh, one morning when I got there about 5 in the morning, um, and it's a Lawrence skate park if you want to check that. Uh, one morning when I got there at 5 in the morning, I found the biggest find I ever had at a skatepark. It was a dog. Um, I pulled up, opened the opened my Jeep up a Jeep at a time. She hopped right in. Um, decided that she needed to stay with us and, uh, we started uh, we took her in. Landlord kind of screwed us on that one. um kind of breached our contract with that. But uh Sam had this graphic made right here, which is an amazing amazing That's exactly how Lori looks. Uh this is the eight stair at the skate park that we found her at with the Euro. Um this is Lawrence Skate Park, so she's named after it, Lori. Um Sam made this had this graphic made and we did a big bunch of pre-orders on the board. Um cuz I got screwed over on where I needed to live. Uh we couldn't find anywhere to live and um Sam did a pre-order on that.
People on the channel, people on Instagram, everywhere bought pre-orders on the board until it was enough work for me to be able to afford to get in somewhere. And now we live uh at a place with no breed restrictions. It's not the best, but we got a roof over our head and we've got our dog with us and she's great. She's a big old ball of energy.
Um later on the I try to have her like right on my side while I'm playing the video games. Um but she is at home right now. Um but yeah, we'll go hang out with her. Um I'm actually going to go grab some food and hang out with her for a little bit. Probably going to take a nap, have some night skating later. Uh we'll see. But um don't forget guys, check out lifeskateboard.com.
Thank you guys.
See you. Have a good one.
