Without the rock pigeon, none of what follows would exist. Stock dove. The stockove Columba winus is the pigeon that Europeans most consistently misidentify as a rock pigeon. And the confusion is understandable because at a glance they look nearly identical. But look closer and the differences become clear. The stock dove is slightly smaller and more compact. Its neck shows only a subtle green patch rather than the rock pigeon's full iridescent gorge.
And critically, it has no white rump patch, the flash of white that rock pigeons reveal when they fly away. While rock pigeons haunt cliffs and city ledges, stock doves prefer woodland and farmland, nesting inside old woodpecker holes or rabbit burrows rather than on rocky surfaces. Found across Europe and into central Asia, its song is a repetitive rhythmic double coup that fills spring woodlands. In parts of its range, it has declined due to agricultural intensification. The same intensification that ironically benefits the more adaptable rock pigeon. Common wood pigeon. The common wood pigeon Columbus is the largest pigeon native to Europe and it is impossible to miss.
Significantly bulkier than a rock pigeon. It can weigh up to 615 g and carry a wingspan reaching 80 cm. And when it launches into flight from a tree, it does so with an explosive clapping of wings that echoes through the surrounding area. The white patches on each side of its neck and the white crescent across its wings in flight make identification straightforward. It is by most measures one of Europe's most successful birds with a population that has been growing rather than declining partly because it has moved into urban parks and gardens. Farmers across Britain and continental Europe regard it as a serious agricultural pest responsible for significant damage to oil seed rape, pee, and grain crops each year. It is a bird thriving in the modern world while many others struggle.
Speckled pigeon. The speckled pigeon Columbus, also called the African rock pigeon or guinea pigeon, fills essentially the same ecological role in subsaharan Africa that the rock pigeon fills in Europe. Widespread from Sagal east to Ethiopia and south through much of subsaharan Africa. It is a bold, confident bird that settles comfortably around human habitation, nesting on cliffs, bridges, and building ledges just as its European counterpart does.
What sets it apart visually is striking.
The wings are covered in heavy chestnut and white speckled patterning that looks almost painted on. The head is gray and the eye is surrounded by vivid bare red skin. It forages for seeds and grain in open grassland and is regarded as tame and approachable in many of the African cities where it thrives. It is the rock pigeon of another continent shaped by a different landscape into a different but parallel form. Nilgiri wood pigeon. The nilgiri wood pigeon cola elf and stony exists in one of the most biologically rich and threatened landscapes on earth.
The moist evergreen forests of the western guts mountain range in India endemic to this single region found mainly across Kerala Carnitaka and Tamil Nadu. It is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN due to the ongoing destruction of the old growth forests it depends on. It is an unusually large wood pigeon and its most distinctive feature is a bold black and white checkered patch on the back of its neck unlike anything found on its relatives. Because it spends most of its time high in the dense forest canopy feeding on fruits and berries, it is rarely seen and poorly understood.
Its fate is tied directly to the fate of the western guts forests themselves.
Forests that are disappearing faster than conservation efforts can keep pace with. Somali pigeon. The Somali pigeon, Columba Olivi, is one of the least known birds on Earth. And that obscurity is not an accident.
Found only in the rocky coastal hills and cliffs of northern Somalia, a region with extremely limited ornithological access due to decades of instability, this small, compact pigeon with muted brownish gray plumage and subtle pinkish tones on the breast has been studied almost not at all. Very little published behavioral or ecological data exists for this species, and its population status is genuinely uncertain. currently listed as least concern by the IUCN, but with the acknowledgement that the data underpinning that assessment is thin. It is a reminder that the animal kingdom still contains species about which science knows almost nothing, hiding not in deep ocean or remote jungle, but in places that humans simply have not been able to safely reach. Laurel pigeon. The laurel pigeon Columba Junonier is a bird tied to one of the most ancient and threatened forest ecosystems on the planet. Found only on the Canary Islands, specifically La Palma and Lagomera, it lives exclusively in the laurel forests that once covered much of the Mediterranean and Macronian region millions of years ago. Forests that now survive only in scattered pockets and have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage habitat. The pigeon feeds primarily on laurel berries and other forest fruits, and its survival is entirely dependent on the survival of this ancient woodland. White crowned pigeon. The white-crowned pigeon, Patagio Lucila, announces itself with a flash of brilliant white against a dark slate body. The crown patch so clean and bright it looks almost artificial. Found across the Caribbean and in coastal southern Florida, it lives a split existence, nesting on small offshore islands and mangrove keys where predators are few, then commuting long distances inland to feed on tropical fruits in the hardwood forests.
This commuting behavior makes it an extraordinarily important seed disperser for dozens of tropical tree species, and its decline has measurable ecological consequences for the forests it services. Listed as nearthreatened, it has suffered heavily from hunting and from the destruction of both its nesting islands and its feeding forests. A red eye ring and a yellow tipped bill complete its appearance. A bird that looks almost too vivid to be real and is becoming harder to find every decade.
Banttailed pigeon. The bandtailed pigeon Patagioenus fascia is the largest pigeon native to North America and it carries a particular historical weight because it is the closest living relative of the passenger pigeon. The bird that represents perhaps the most catastrophic wildlife loss in recorded history. The band tailed weighs up to 340 g, ranges from British Columbia South through Central America, and is identified by the pale gray terminal band across its tail, a white crescent on the nape above an iridescent green patch, and a yellow bill with a dark tip. Highly nomadic, it follows mass crops across vast distances, moving with the acorns and berries rather than holding a fixed territory. Once heavily hunted itself, it recovered after protections were introduced in the early 20th century. A trajectory that makes what happened to its closest relative all the more devastating by contrast.
Passenger pigeon. The passenger pigeon ectopistes migratorus was once estimated to number between 3 and 5 billion individuals, possibly representing 25 to 40% of all birds in North America, according to population historians. and then it was gone. Migrating flocks reportedly darkened the skies for days at a time, stretching for hundreds of miles. The sound of their wings described by witnesses as resembling distant thunder. Industrialcale hunting combined with mass deforestation dismantled the population so rapidly that a species this abundant was functionally extinct within decades. The last individual, a female named Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1st, 1914. The passenger pigeon had a slate blue head, a brick red breast, and a long pointed tail built for speed.
Revive and Restore, a de-extinction organization, has proposed and partially funded efforts to recreate the species using bandtailed pigeon DNA. Though as of the mid2020s, this remains a long-term scientific project rather than an imminent reality.
Dodo. The dodo rafis cucilatus is technically a pigeon. A fact that surprises almost everyone who hears it for the first time. Modern genetic analysis has confirmed that the dodo was a giant flightless member of the pigeon and dove family endemic to the island of Maitius in the Indian Ocean where the complete absence of natural predators allowed it to lose flight entirely over millions of years of evolution. It weighed an estimated 10.6 6 to 17.5 kg, stood roughly a meter tall, and had a large hooked bill, tiny vestigial wings, and a small tuft of tail feathers. Sailors arriving on Maitius found a bird so unafraid of humans that it could be approached and killed with minimal effort. The last confirmed sighting is disputed, falling somewhere between 1662 and 1688, depending on the source. Its closest living relative, confirmed by genetic studies, is not some large exotic bird, but the nicobar pigeon, a small iridescent island hopper found thousands of kilometers away. Victoria crowned pigeon. The Victoria crowned pigeon, Gura Victoria, is the largest living pigeon on Earth, growing to roughly the size of a large turkey and weighing up to 2.4 4 kg, making it almost 10 times heavier than a common rock pigeon. Named after Queen Victoria, it lives in the lowland rainforests of northern New Guinea, walking slowly along the forest floor to feed on fallen fruit and seeds.
On its head, it carries an extraordinary lacy blue crest, an elaborate fan of feathers tipped with white that looks more like a piece of Victorian millinary than a natural structure. The body is deep blue gray. the breast a rich maroon and the eye a vivid red. It is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN. Threatened by hunting for food and for its spectacular crest feathers as well as by the ongoing logging of New Guiney's lowland forests.
It is without question one of the most visually arresting birds alive. Nicobar pigeon. The nicobar pigeon callus nicobar is the closest living relative of the dodo. A fact confirmed by genetic analysis, which means this shimmering metallic island bird carries a threat of evolutionary continuity back to one of the most famous extinctions in history.
Found across a chain of islands stretching from the Nikobar Islands through Southeast Asia to the Solomon Islands, it is a stunning bird whose plumage shifts between metallic green, copper, and electric blue depending on the light with long hackle feathers draping from the neck and a pure white tail that contrasts sharply with the iridescent body. Unlike the dodo, which evolved on an isolated island without predators, the nicobar pigeon remained capable of flight and became an island hopper, moving between remote land masses with ease. It is listed as nearthreatened with hunting and trapping for food and the pet trade placing increasing pressure on its populations across its island range.
Pink pigeon. The pink pigeon Nissanus Mory is one of the most remarkable conservation stories in ornithology.
Found only on the island of Maitius, the same island that saw the dodo go extinct, the pink pigeon came within a breath of the same fate. By the early 1990s, the total wild population had crashed to just 10 individuals.

Toothbuild pigeon. The toothbuild pigeon dunculus striost is called the little dodo and it earns that name on multiple levels. Endemic to Samoa, restricted to mature upland forest, it has evolved a uniquely hooked and notched bill unlike any other living pigeon. The notch giving it the toothbuild description.
Though these are not actual teeth, but structural modifications to the bill itself. Like the dodo, it evolved in island isolation and faces catastrophic threats from multiple directions simultaneously.
Cyclones, deforestation, hunting, and invasive predators, including rats and feral cats. Possibly fewer than 500 individuals, remain in the wild, according to recent estimates, though the population is genuinely difficult to survey in dense upland forest. Its plumage is dark metallic green and black, and it carries a vivid orange, red, hooked bill, and red feet. A small extraordinary bird that most people have never heard of and that may not survive the century. Spinfects pigeon. Galacolumba Lonica appears at first glance to be injured because centered on its pure white breast is a vivid blood red patch so precisely located and so deeply colored that it genuinely resembles a fresh wound. This is of course plumage rather than injury, but the effect is startling enough to stop anyone who encounters it for the first time.
Endemic to the island of Luzon in the Philippines, it is a shy, secretive ground dweller of lowland and foothill forest, moving carefully through leaf litter and undergrowth. It is one of five bleeding heart pigeon species, all of them endemic to different Philippine islands, each with the same striking breast patch. A remarkable example of shared visual evolution across closely related island species. The Luzon species is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN with deforestation across the Philippine lowlands driving ongoing habitat loss. Wonga pigeon. The Wonga pigeon lucosaria melanoluca announces its presence long before it is seen. Its call, a loud, persistent, and repetitive wonk wonk wonkies far through the wet forests of eastern Australia and is one of the characteristic sounds of the coastal ranges of Queensland and New South Wales. A large plump ground pigeon with a blue gay back and a white face and underparts marked with heavy black spotting that forms an almost shield-like pattern across the breast.
It is immediately recognizable once known. It walks along the forest floor, foraging methodically for seeds and fallen fruit, moving with an unhurried confidence that reflects the relatively low predator pressure in its forest habitat. Though foxes and fereral cats have created serious problems in areas where they have become established. Its population is currently considered stable, a reassuring status in a world where stable is increasingly the best news available for ground dwelling birds. Top-not pigeon. The top-not pigeon, Loalmus Antarcticus, wears one of the strangest crests in the pigeon world. A two-part drooping structure, rufus at the front and gray at the rear that flops forward over the face in a way that looks almost comedically impractical. Found in the rainforests of eastern Australia from Queensland south to Victoria, it is a highly nomadic species that moves and flocks of sometimes hundreds of birds following the fruing cycles of rainforest trees, particularly figs. It feeds almost entirely on fruit and is considered an important disperser of rainforest seeds across the landscape. Its body is gray.
It's bill red. And in flight, the combination of the crest and the large, heavy body shape makes it one of the more distinctive silhouettes in Australian skies. In New South Wales, it holds a vulnerable listing at the state level, reflecting the significant loss of rainforest habitat in that state over the past two centuries.
Jacobin pigeon. The Jacabin pigeon is one of the oldest domestic breeds in recorded history with origins believed to trace to India or Southeast Asia and it has been known in Europe for several centuries. It takes its name from the hooded robes of Jacaban monks because the bird's most defining feature is an enormous feathered hood that rises from the neck and frames the head like a cape. so large and so enveloping that the bird often cannot see forward without turning its head sideways.
Charles Darwin studied jackabins extensively as part of his research into artificial selection, citing them in his 1868 work, the variation of animals and plants under domestication, as a prime example of how dramatically selective breeding can reshape a species from its ancestral form. Today, the breed is kept purely as an ornamental showbird bred in multiple color varieties. A living demonstration of what centuries of human aesthetic preference can do to a body.
Fanale pigeon. The fantail pigeon is one of the most widely recognized ornamental breeds in the world and one of the most extreme in its departure from functional bird anatomy.
Where a normal pigeon carries 12 to 14 tail feathers, fan tails have been selectively bred to carry between 30 and 40 spread in a dramatic fan that the bird holds erect. Sometimes so far back that the head nearly touches the tail.
Its origin is disputed with India, Spain, China, and Pakistan all appearing in different historical accounts and no single origin is definitively settled.

Powder pigeon. The powder pigeon is not a single breed, but a group of breeds united by one spectacularly impractical shared trait. The ability to inflate the crop, a muscular pouch in the esophagus, into a large globelike sphere that the bird displays as a dominance and courtship behavior. The English powder is the most well-known variety, characterized not only by the inflated crop, but by an unusually long-legged, upright stance that makes it look like it is permanently standing at attention while simultaneously trying to swallow a small balloon. Other recognized varieties within the group include the Brunner powder and the pygmy powder, each refining the inflated crop trait in a slightly different body type. Carrier pigeon. Homing pigeon. The homing pigeon has served human beings for thousands of years with documented use in ancient Egypt, Rome, and Greece, and may represent one of the earliest examples of humans forming a working partnership with a bird rather than simply hunting or farming one. The ability to navigate home over distances of hundreds of kilome using a combination of magnetic field sensing, solar positioning, allactory cues, and visual landmarks. according to current scientific consensus made it uniquely valuable as a communication tool in an era before telecommunications.
During World War I and World War II, military homing pigeons saved thousands of lives. Sher Ammy, a black Czech pigeon, famously delivered a critical message in October 1918 during the Battle of the Argon Forest, helping to save the trapped soldiers of the Lost Battalion despite being shot through the breast and losing a leg during the flight. He was awarded the quadigar by the French government for his service.
Racing Homer. The racing homer is the homing pigeon refined specifically for competitive speed over distance. A Belgian racing Homer named Armando sold at auction in 2019 for approximately 1.25 million, a record that has since been surpassed by subsequent sales, pushing into higher figures. The racing Homer is a sleek, muscular, aerodynamically compact bird built visibly differently from ornamental breeds with a powerful keel, a compact head, and the kind of efficient, purposeful body that reflects generations of selection for one thing above all else, getting home fast. King pigeon. The king pigeon is the pigeon of the food industry. A breed developed in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th century by crossing several existing breeds to create a bird optimized for rapid growth and large body mass, producing what is sold commercially as squab. A young squab, typically harvested at around 28 days of age before it begins to fly, is considered a delicacy in Chinese cuisine and in high-end restaurants globally.
The king pigeon also has a more uncomfortable cultural presence. Because the white variety is large, pale, and visually gentle, it is frequently sold as a so-called release dove for weddings, funerals, and ceremonial events. Despite the fact that king pigeons, having been domestically bred for body mass rather than survival, are functionally incapable of surviving in the wild after release. Animal welfare organizations have campaigned extensively against this practice, pointing to the near certain death of released king pigeons from predation, starvation, or exposure. Moda pigeon.
The Mana pigeon is one of the oldest domestic breeds with a documented and traceable urban history. Its origins connected to the city of Modina in northern Italy, where records of the breed stretch back several centuries. It is an extraordinarily compact, round bird, almost spherical in profile, the result of generations of selective breeding that have produced a body shape so different from the ancestral rock pigeon that the resemblance is almost theoretical. The frillback pigeon looks as though someone took a standard pigeon, washed it, and put it in a tumble dryer.
Because every feather on its wings and back, is curled outward rather than lying flat. the result of a genetic mutation that disrupts the normal structure of feather barbules. The barbules, the tiny interlocking hooks that hold feather veins together and give feathers their smooth aerodynamic surface, simply fail to interlock properly in the frillback, leaving every feather coiled and ruffled in a way that is visually bizarre and texturally fascinating. The breed originated in Asia Minor according to most historical accounts and has been developed over centuries as a purely ornamental showbird. Even the crest feathers when present show the same frilling effect compounding the disheveled but somehow deliberate appearance. It is a breed that exists as a pure aesthetic statement. A pigeon as art object.
Lahore pigeon. The Lahore pigeon is a breed with deep roots in South Asian pigeon culture. Originating in the city of Lahore in what is now Pakistan where ornamental pigeon keeping has been a sophisticated tradition for centuries.
Associated in part with the Mughal era culture of the region. It is a large, calm, and notably gentle bird, temperamentally quite different from the nervous energy of many smaller breeds.
And this placidity has made it popular both as a showbird and as a pet. Its color pattern is distinctive. The body is white while the head, neck, and wing flights carry a second color which can be black, blue, red, or yellow, creating a clean two-tone appearance that photographs exceptionally well. In recent decades, the L'ore has gained significant popularity in European and North American pigeon shows, spreading far beyond its South Asian origins while carrying its cultural history with it.
Nun pigeon. The nun pigeon is a small, elegantly proportioned breed with a rounded shell crest at the back of the head, the feature that gives it its name. The crest was thought to resemble the hood of a religious sister's habit.
One of the older short-faced European breeds, it has a documented history in Germany and the Netherlands stretching back several centuries and Darwin included it in his survey of domestic pigeon variation. The classic color pattern is a white body with a colored cap covering the head available in black, red, yellow, or blue. And the combination of the white body, the colored cap, and the small shell crest creates an appearance of considered formal design. It is a compact, tidy bird with a short face that gives it an almost owl-like frontal profile, popular in the show world for the precision of its markings and the neatness of its overall form. Oriental frill pigeon. The oriental frill pigeon originated in Istanbul, then Constantinople, where it was developed over centuries within the Ottoman pigeon keeping tradition into one of the most extremely modified domestic breeds in existence. Its defining feature is a face so compressed, so shortened by generations of selective breeding for a flat profile that the beak is almost invisible, reduced to a tiny nub surrounded by feathering. This degree of brackle, the same type of facial compression seen in flat-faced dog and cat breeds, creates a functional problem. Chicks sometimes cannot generate enough leverage with their compressed bills to break out of the egg during hatching and require human assistance to survive. Capucine pigeon. The capucine pigeon shares its naming logic with the jackabin. Both breeds named for the hooded robes of Catholic religious orders. Each generation refines slightly further toward a human vision of what a pigeon should look like. Feral pigeon. The feral pigeon is not a species, but a status. It is the domestic rock pigeon.
Columba Livia domestica returned to wild living typically in urban environments after escaping or being released from captivity across centuries of human history. What makes feral pigeons fascinating from a biological standpoint is their extraordinary color variation.
A direct product of their mixed domestic heritage. A single urban flock can contain birds showing blue bar, checker, spread, pied, red, white, and black plumage, sometimes seemingly all at once. Estimates of the global feral pigeon population reach approximately 400 million individuals with tens of millions in Europe alone. They are frequently blamed for disease transmission, but public health researchers note that the actual disease risk posed by feral pigeons to healthy people is routinely and significantly overstated relative to the available evidence. They also play a genuine ecological role in cities, serving as a primary prey source for urban paragrin falcons, whose own urban recovery has been one of the conservation success stories of the late 20th century.
Domestic show racer. The domestic show racer, sometimes called the genuine Homer in show contexts, illustrates one of the most interesting dynamics in selective breeding. Take a working animal, remove the working requirement, and within a surprisingly short number of generations, you can breed it into something shaped entirely by human aesthetic preference rather than functional performance. Derived from the racing Homer, the show racer is judged in the show pen on head shape, eye color, body proportion, and feather quality with flight performance entirely irrelevant to the standard. Major pigeon fancy organizations, including the National Pigeon Association, recognize it as a distinct breed category separate from the racing Homer, precisely because the selection pressures have diverged far enough to produce consistently different results.
It is a breed that tells the story of its own origin while demonstrating exactly how quickly domestication can fork a single population into two very different directions.
City pigeon as cultural icon. The pigeon has been woven into human civilization longer than almost any other animal.

Some historians argue that pigeons were among the first animals domesticated for a purpose beyond food or physical labor, kept specifically for their homing ability, a form of utility so different from farming or hunting that it represents a genuinely novel category of human animal relationship.
In the 20th century, BF Skinner used pigeons extensively in developing operant conditioning theory, teaching them to peck levers and navigate mazes in experiments that shaped modern behavioral psychology. And in 2008, a study confirmed that pigeons can pass the mirror self-recognition test, recognizing their own reflection as themselves, a cognitive achievement shared by only a small number of nonhuman animals, including great apes, dolphins, and elephants.
