The Rock Pigeon (Columba livia) is the single ancestral species from which every domestic breed, racing champion, and feral city pigeon on Earth descends. Native to coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops of Europe, North Africa, and South Asia, this gray, red-footed, iridescent-necked bird weighs between 238-455g with a wingspan of 62-72cm. In the wild, it can live up to 15 years, though captive individuals have reportedly reached 35 years. The neck feathers shimmer between green and purple depending on the angle of light, featuring a feature called a gorgeette, and the classic wild type shows two dark bars across gray wings. It has been studied more than almost any other bird in history, used in navigation research, behavioral psychology, and genetics. Without the rock pigeon, none of the diverse pigeon world that follows would exist.
