Process control is the use of control techniques to regulate process variables and ensure stable, consistent product quality in industries like chemical manufacturing, oil and gas, and food production. Processes are categorized as continuous (constant material flow, rarely shutting down like cement kilns) or batch (defined start/end points producing discrete quantities like beer brewing). Control systems operate as loops with three main components: sensors that measure process variables, controllers that compare measurements to set points and calculate corrections, and actuators that physically adjust the process. Two primary control approaches exist: open-loop control (actions taken regardless of conditions, simple but inefficient) and closed-loop control (measures current conditions, compares to set point, and corrects deviations). Common control strategies include PID control (proportional, integral, derivative), two-state control (on/off devices), selective control (multiple loops competing for actuator control), split range control (single signal driving complementary actuators), feedforward control (compensating for known disturbances), ratio control (maintaining fixed ratios between streams), and cascade control (secondary loop reacting faster to disturbances before affecting primary variable).
