USB cameras require a host computer because they are 'dumb cameras' that send UVC streams, which can be in various formats (uncompressed, H.264, H.263, or ME2 transport streams). Unlike HDMI or SDI cameras, USB cameras cannot be directly switched without a computer to interpret the streams. When I first when I first saw this, I thought that's very cool. Uh, Nerds Limited. I really like that is Jason Beige. Um, but you've got a few different roles and a bunch of experience in all sorts of different tech and that sort of stuff, right, Jason?
>> That's true. I I I think I the more I think about it, I think I'm just an insane generalist and just need to leave it alone, but you know, range is an important thing. So, yeah, good to know.
Glad you like the company name that I came up with 18 years ago.

>> So across the pond, limited does not mean anything other than Inc. right? It it's basically if you are a company, you are limited. So in this case, what I was actually going for was exclusive and I wanted to shorten a limited liability company. Instead of Nerds, Inc. I wanted to be Nerds Limited, but then I incorporated Nerds Limited LLC. So Nerds Limited Limited is what it actually turned out to be.

That that that's a that's a third rail topic that I just I just stepped on um for Chris's benefit because um he would love to just just riff on that for 15 minutes.

Uh, all right. So, we have um a bunch of people that are listening along uh as well as we go live. Um, we have some people that have joined into Macana and have asked some questions as well. So, why don't we go to those? Courtney, what's our first one there?
>> All right. open up your uh books and follow along folks at home. Uh Craig Kadoki in Toronto, Canada says LTT has a video about restoring that's Lionus Tech Tips for those of you who don't participate in watching the Canadians.
Uh has a video about uh restoring the first fully computer animated television series, Reboot. Uh what do you think about the tech and the process to restore it? and he has a link to a YouTube video.
>> Good one, Kyle.
>> So, I took a quick look at this. Um, what it comes down to is they got the D1 masters. So, D1 is a uh composite digital format from the '90s. Um, and what they were looking for essentially the key they were looking for a D1 machine that was working. Um, there is a community of archists. They're very similar to like how office hours operates. um they have like a discord and everything and so some work in large corporations. The thing about D1 machines is the D1 machines that are working either belong to corporations that need to maintain their archive. So like Warner Brothers, Disney, that kind of stuff. Um Lucasfilm has one. Um or it goes out to enthusiasts. The problem with enthusiasts, they have to kind of cannibalize four or five machines to get one working, but they can't keep on getting spare parts. Um this is one of the luxuries of being an organization.
you can afford to buy up like 20 machines at once at auction and then cannibalize 20 machines. And this is the problem they came across. They eventually found an archivist who is able to help them. Um yeah, but it's a composite. So it's interesting. It's unlike a DVD or Blu-ray or um D5 or um the fact that it's composite means the color signals all mixed into one. So you're not going to get the highest quality, but it's D1. It's um standard.
So it's DVD quality. Um all the color information is blended into well it's composite signal. So similar like how color is treated in VHS as well. Um but yeah, D1 is it's old enough to be a little bit of a problem, but it's ubiquitous enough to have a lot of machines around the world still operating by archists.
>> Nice, Con.
>> Yeah, they're lucky they didn't have to go back to the Synth Vision computers and rerender everything for Reboot or whatever they used to generate uh that particular series, which I used to watch Reboot. I always thought it was interesting because it was the first uh uh television series, animated series on television, weekly animated series that uh had was 100% computerenerated. Uh it was cute. It had uh interesting characters and um I know what it's like to try and restore this this equipment that it's funny the name of the company uh that they that brings a lot of these obsolete programs back to life again is called Disappearing Inc. So inc. So that's curious. And uh they do have a whole bunch of the D1 machines looking like this. Uh, and if you've ever seen if you've ever taken any of those things apart, the the circuit boards, let me see if I can find a picture of the circuit boards here. They're just huge TTL logic and uh an amazing number of chips on a giant uh this was before, you know, uh there was surface mount, so everything was through discrete logic and uh all that kind of stuff on these boards. Uh, so it's kind of hard to find, but you know, if you hang around and dumpster dive around some of the uh, you know, dubbing companies or the CDC, Canadian, CBC, Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, you'd probably find a whole stack of D1 machines up at the dumpster that you could pick up uh, for free. If not, you you know, they were selling them for, you know, pennies per pound or scraps.
>> Interesting. I feel like we're going to be talking about uh some history uh some older tech and then inevitably we'll be talking about AI as well um today which will be the two extremes of what we have here. Courtney, what's the next question?
>> Next one comes in from uh uh Karen uh Kieran Addis uh from Melbourne, Australia. I have access to ATM mini extreme ISO and roadcaster video, but most of my cameras are USB, not HDMI these days. In other words, Osmo Pocket 3 and a four and an OBS spot uh tiny 3es. Are there any switchers that uh have more USB inputs? Is there a tech reason these don't exist?
H Carl.
>> So, a USB camera requires a host. A host is just a fancy way of saying computer, an actual computer. Um, so in theory, you could just give this over to a Mac Mini and just dedicate a Mac Mini to do the switching because it requires every USB camera is a dumb camera. It doesn't do anything. It the the computer controls the camera. Um, it's just sending out a stream. is called a uh UVC stream. Um and that UVC stream has to come in and and be interpreted because a UVC stream can be many different formats actually. It can be uncompressed. It can be uh H.264.
Um there were old ones that were H.263.
So, and then probably the ME2 one out there. So, uh Meek 2 TS transport stream. So, there's many different flavors. That's why you need a computer and you need a software um layer as well. So, it's not that easy. So, what uh Road's done, they've got two inputs, I believe, on their Roadcaster video on on the bigger one that allows that.
Essentially, what they have is like essentially inside like a little Raspberry Pi that's doing the the computer part to translate that and turn it into bassband, but it has to be when it when it gets sent out. Um, I wouldn't do that. If you're if you're adding more than one or two cameras, I wouldn't be going down the USBC. So, I would USBC route for cameras um because you can't control them. So, once you get that, you lose all control. This is why if you use a computer as as your switcher, like you just simply cuz a computer, let's say a Mac Mini with four inputs, um then you can have four cameras coming in and you can run all software in there and that's the only thing you're doing with a computer and you're doing 1080 that should be fine. It should be the software should be able to handle it all the fine and you're going to have to bring them into like um uh something like Mimo Live and then Mimo Live can actually simply just be your router in effect or your switcher. You can treat it as both. So you do it is a very software heavy thing by doing that. Um if you have all the same cameras I reckon that'll make a little easier. So all the same brand, same generations running on the same firmware. I think that make might make a little easier for the computation inside but bassband is much better. So HDMI SDI um or even what they're doing with like the extreme G2 which is SRT RTMP in um is a much better solution and I'd be looking at that way if you're interested in like USB. I'd be looking at cameras that can spit out um SRT or RTMP straight out of the camera into something like a Extreme G2.
>> Okay. Uh Chris was making faces all through that.
>> Well, actually, Carl, no, >> actually.
>> So, uh and I apologize. I I've forgot your name already. Uh uh Kieran. So, here's here's what I would recommend. Um, and it's kind of exactly what I do. I use I have a couple of uh HDMI sources and I have some USB sources and then I I want to capture screens and and whatnot. And so, and I'm trying to see I'm looking for a an image that might show it good because I've I've uh done this many times and I'm not finding it quickly. But essentially what I do, this might be it. Oh, this is pretty good. Let me let me hit play on this screen here. Uh play slideshow.
Yes. Here we go.
So, what I do to now this is my older computer is I have one computer that basically just goes online and all my audio and whatnot is plugged into that.
Actually, this isn't the best drawing.
And then I control it uh here. The HDMI source can go into this switcher, but then this switcher also comes into this computer.
So, there's a whole HDMI workflow and that cascades into the um USB workflow.
And if you look here, I'm actually switching it all on OBS on the Mac. So, I'm doing a little bit of both. And essentially, uh all the HDMI stuff just flows into the USB stuff again using one of the functions of OBS. And then OBS becomes my UVC or universal video camera source into Zoom.
So that might work for you. You might be able to do a hybrid of both.

Yeah, you know, the problem with using uh you know, USBC type based cameras, you know, they're all based on the webcam um uh model and when webcams first came out, nobody expected you to have more than one webcam on a computer.
And so when you plug USB devices in um each camera identifies itself as webcam, you know, and it doesn't have a unique identifier necessarily. So, if you plug multiple cameras in that are the same brand, especially their USB identifier, uh when it sets up that USB buffer and channel and UVC channel for streaming video, it uh one camera looks identical to the next one and it can't tell which is which and it's going to be hard to be able to switch between the two of them because they have an identical identifier in the device table. So, there's that problem. Uh, another possibility is you could take uh a small computer like one of these uh um they're now much bigger GMK text or any any mini computer that has multiple HDMI outputs and or a multiple uh you know USB inputs and uh then generate NDI feeds with it and put this this has gigabit Ethernet on it. put uh multiple cameras that are plugged into one of these on on in as NDI and the video uh the Roadcaster video supports up to three NDI feeds uh for live cameras coming in. So you could use that along with some HDMI uh HDMI from the A10 Mini as well. So mix the HDMI from the A10 Mini along with uh coming into one input which is what I have on my Roadcaster video right now.
And then the other cameras can come in as NDI uh after they go into maybe a separate computer uh that has UVC inputs, USB inputs.
>> Jason, yeah, Karen, you're going to keep running into this. Anytime you have a USB source, it needs to be enumerated by a system and then instantiated into a chain and then mixed into uh a series of things that are that are going to be your output. A hardware switcher is designed to do this seamlessly with a known input and that known input does not require an operating system or more like the operating system is on the piece of video switching hardware. It's designed to be extremely fast and as such isn't as versatile as an operating system that can pull down drivers to drive the hardware. That's the problem you're going to keep running into. There are you software uh applications that can do this, V-Mix, uh OBS to name a few that will do this relatively well, but they're not going to be extremely frame accurate and there's always going to be a slight delay uh unless every single camera is truly just outputting all the time, which is basically how these apps work.
Chris looked like he was going to um rebuff that. Actually, >> that's what I was doing.
>> Go on, Chris.
>> That was my hand gesture for actually.
>> I just want to say I found a better drawing. This is more current, but whatever.
>> You can go back rewind that.
>> So, >> freeze frame it, print it out, >> put it by your desk.
>> So, the thing that you didn't list in your question was a computer that's just dedicated to webcam input. That's what you need. So, you're going to need to like Chris has shown it in all his and Courtney talked about it with mini computers. You are definitely going to need a computer of some sort $200 to $500 that is just there to accept USB connection to these cameras. And then it gives out via whichever way you want.
You can do NDI, SRT, you can do a bassband out via HDMI if you got enough HDMI outputs. But yeah, there has to be a computer you need to add to your hardware list there. A computer that can handle probably a 4K 60 signal cuz you're going to be probably doing 1080s out of these. Um, yeah, that's something you need to you can't get around that.
There's no way around it.
>> So, yeah, the Roadcaster video is an interesting part as well in that it does take uh USB inputs. Yeah.
>> Um, but John, what were you going to add? Well, I was just going to add that uh we have been using NDI and uh Chris uh I don't use preview so I use Mimo Live and we've been able to do a mix of NDI and USB cameras and even an A10 into it. So that's worked for us very well.
>> Okay. And Fenwick wants the last say on every on every topic probably. Well, actually, uh, preview is a pre preview is pretty important and you can get that out of, uh, OBS if you go to the studio view. Um, I think that I think that there are some USB cameras that are better at having multiple. I liked Carl's comment about it. It's a little confusing to tell which is which. But I'll also say that, you know, this camera back here is a Blackmagic 6K and it's a has a beautiful image and I prefer this camera. the camera doesn't look as good, but the functionality of the PTZ I'll take a a quality hit over the the that camera because to me the PTZ >> Which PTZ are you using there, Chris?
>> I'm I'm Well, well, if we let's go to the slides. Uh it's this one.
>> It's this guy. It's the Insta 360.
>> It's a couple years old. It looks okay.
You know, I I and and don't get me wrong, I look at people that are using better cameras, I'm like, "That looks really good." But from a a actual workflow situation, uh I just prefer this.
>> What's What's an example of when you use it? What What What are you changing?
>> Every single day.
>> Every single day I use it. I'm slouching. I want to go a little wider.
>> I didn't ask when do you use it. I asked how do you use it.
>> You first of all you can drop that attitude. Second of all, >> I use it for reframing >> which is what one does with a PTZ fancy boy Mr. Downenda >> because you're because you're sitting well because you sit at a different screen or something like what why do you need to reframe? genuine question >> because I'm super picky and I'm like, "Ah, god, I need to pan. I need to pan just a little bit to the left." And and I'll do this much and I'll go here. I'll show I'll quite quite literally I'll do this. I'll go a It's much better.
>> Oh, that's better.
>> It's just >> just I just want a I just want a little bit of room.
>> I was thinking before, but this is >> I just need a little bit of looking when I'm looking over this way. I want a little bit of looking room there. And then when I'm I just want a little bit of looking room that way. So you just >> I'm well a and headroom mostly. And here's the other thing. When I was using that camera, I had the room I everything was backed up against a wall. And the physicality of tilting down like 20 scan lines, 15 pixels or whatever, it was not possible. And I was I just I got to the point where I just hated it. I'm like I'm so angry that I can't tilt down, you know, that much >> that you know.
>> Yeah.
>> And it just it just made me so angry and I was like I I don't care how good the image looks like.
>> This is just better. I just >> I just want the framing right. I mean it lives up to your name. you the Fenwick framer is all about framing and not about not about the composition at all.
Uh not about the quality of the image.
It's just about the frame where you see it in the frame.
>> You'd be surprised honestly you I'm just saying that sometimes >> uh it's Yeah, it matters more. It matters more. So speaking to the question, um the fact that we've got the roadcast video that does control that does allow you to control the generic PTZ in many supported um PTZ cameras. So that's one of the good things about that particular product where if you do a UVC to HDMI conversion, you lose that ability. But I believe that product, the Roadcaster Video does allow um what we call like generic PTZ operations and presets, I believe. um for the any camera that's connected to USB of that particular product. So that's a good thing about that where you you can eliminate a computer if you're just doing something basic.
>> And I'd also like to point out one last thing before we move on.
>> And this this goes toward my obsession with reframing the camera. Is this >> how come it's always you're autistic and not thank you for telling me everything you know about Formula 1.
Okay, that derailed us somewhat. But John actually wanted to finish off on this one. John, >> I'm I'm not sure I could do that with justice. But I have this camera which lets it do this focusing back and forth and it's a fancier one. But I also have like Chris, I'll switch to it here hopefully.
There we go. So, this is my PTZ camera, and it does not look quite as good, and I can't focus as neatly as that, but um focus. I do like the build. It's >> It went pretty good. That That focus went pretty quick. Yeah.
>> Yeah. So, that that's the new Osbot Tiny 3.
>> Um this is actually >> This is my beautiful camera.
>> It's a Right. Yeah. And that's the thing I think um it's an interesting discussion. It's something that I'm looking a bit more into at the moment.
um as I'm starting to help people a little bit with some of these things and what I'm finding is how do you how do you find the balance between the complexity of the setup, you know, the the great view that you have um and then the flexibility of like Chris is saying, the flexibility of being able to move the camera around actually might be more valuable than a really uh shallow depth of field view that you're Um, and I think for a lot of people that would be the case. But what I'm finding as I'm as I'm researching more and more of this and kind of thinking it through, what I'm coming to is is about being human first and gear second. So that so that we're actually saying so that we're saying what what impact does this have on on the people that we're talking to online or or communicating with online.
Um, and I think that when we think of it in terms of that, I I think you can make an argument that a nice shallow depth of field view can help people focus on you in the frame rather than uh and that would be a difference, Chris, in your frame now is that your background is a little more in focus than it was before.
Um, >> you're correct.
>> Yeah, but not not not at a massive deal.
Um, but that but that that comes at a cost, right, to set up >> to make it sound like it's a massive deal.
>> Sorry.
I should I you know, I'm going to mute my mic. Where's that button for?
>> Now that I saw it, now that I saw now that now that you pointed it out, I was like, "Oh, yeah. Now I can see the difference." Um, but those Insta 360s are very nice cameras, and I've been surprised that when you give it good lighting, um, you can get a really good a really good image out of that. Um, all right. Good one. Hopefully that was uh probably more than you bargain for in that question, Karen. All right, next question. Brian Taylor in Washington, DC wants to know, "Trying to upgrade my AJ Kumo 1616 routers with Mac OS, but AJA only provides a bin file as a firmware download. The unarchiver app and Mac's archive utility can't open.bins. Any ideas?
Yeah, get a piece.
>> Jason, >> Brian, the bin is the firmware. So, this is pretty simple. You You're using plural here, so I assume you've got a whole bunch of them um just kind of connected all to one switch. I'm going to try as to do as little networking as possible here. You you can if you want to. Let me get this is the 3636, but it's the same idea. You can on the back of them connect via USB each single device and just you know go to the web interface using the default IP address which is uh let's see 192168101.1 and it will find what you need and then from there it's firmware and the firmware where is it? Uh routers USB I was getting there. Yes, there we go. If you go to the firmware in the home screen under the menu, what you're actually giving it is the BIN file. If not, then you're going to need to use the app. And from the app, it will just check the um check the IP address for every one of your routers and probably give you a list of which one you want to connect and or update to. And um Bob's your uncle.

>> Yeah. BIN file is the binary file. Uh it is not compressed. Uh so just leave it alone in your downloads folder. Um and I think uh yeah Jason uh pointed out what you need to do is go to the uh address on the internet on from your Mac in a browser. go to the address of the router and go to open its uh webpage interface and go down to update firmware and uh it'll say point to the point to the uh the bin file and you just open your downloads directory or whatever folder the download through that bin file into and point it to that bin file and hopefully the router will then uh then you have to agree to uh you know the validation check after it commits to uploading the firm firmware. ware and it will then copy it from your Mac into its uh into its workspace and then update the uh the firmware itself on the router from over the internet over the network local area.
>> Kyle, anything to add?
>> Yeah, so this Yeah, as guys, so you have to do this via Ethernet cable. So first Ethernet cable between the router and a computer. Doesn't matter if it's Mac or PC. Then you simply go to the web portal. So essentially the operating system inside of this of the router is web- based. That's how you access. It's very similar to a a router for I you know like internet kind of router same thing. Um and then it's a fetch. So what that means is you're actually commanding via the web portal. You're asking the router to go fetch the file on the internet um from the location you're telling it. So you simply say what location is this? And you point to it and that needs to be on the computer that's on the same network. Or you can just simply use an Ethernet cable between two. You can get rid of a switch all together and that's it. But it's a fetch operation. So it's actually the the router that's going to fetch the bin file off of a computer that it's connected to. You just got to tell the router where that file is and then it will do the rest. But yeah, so it's a fetch operation.
>> Yeah. Do you know um it's one of the things that I love about we were talking about the um Roadcaster the the um video and the even just the um what it's called the Roadcaster Pro. Um I love the fact that you just plug internet into it. Give it internet and then it just check for in, you know, check for updates and update done. You know, like I love that. And then when you when you ever have to download files and then do it, I get way more nervous that I'm going to brick the device. You know, something's going to happen in the process of copying the file over or something. Um, and it's just such a painful process. It feels like you're stepping back 20 years when there's just have the device be internet connected itself and it can check for updates itself and do it. You know, it's kind of amazing. But so there's more and more devices that are doing that themselves now. Um, but unfortunately, yeah, so you should still be able to do it on the Mac.
All right. Uh, next question.
Next question comes in from David Pascin in Miami, Florida. David says, "What have you learned about doing a show like this over the last 99 episodes?"
>> Kyle, >> um, actually, you may find it's actually 100 now.
So, >> is it 100 today?
>> 100.
>> Well, actually, it's >> it's 100. Um, >> it's 100.
>> The one thing I this this is an interesting kind of show because we interrupt each other and, you know, it's a little bit more conversational um compared to uh the daily show. Um, >> the interesting thing about this show is we can go off into the weeds. Um and we can go off to like really interesting different topics because uh the questions that come in are are very different to sometimes questions that may come in on let's say a a Wednesday, a Friday or a Saturday for instance.
>> Um but yeah, so there is a different vibe to this show. One, it's not, you know, 2:00 in the morning for me. So that's one thing. That's another thing I can talk to as well being there. Um but yeah, so that's the one thing I'd say about this show. It's a little bit more conversational um and a little bit more um the ability to interject, but that's because we all learn how not to step on each other cuz you know if you do this for 100 shows, you kind of learn how not to step on each other too much and know when to come in. Yeah, >> it's true. Courtney, >> yeah, I tried to interrupt Carl just said, but I forgot on me. Uh I've only been doing the show for, you know, recent in recent history. I haven't been here for the night shows, but uh I have been on the 2,000 other shows that when uh was on Monday morning for office hours. So, uh this one's a little bit different in that I have to learn to uh eat dinner before the show starts because this goes late. Sometimes this show goes over unlike the morning shows where they pride themselves in finishing exactly on time, including the uh Yeah, 10 weeks taking a bow there. uh for uh finishing exactly on time, including the credits roll. Uh this one it's a little more loose and if we have an next few extra questions, we'll post off and do some media recommendations and so on. So uh I've discovered uh in appearing here on the late night show that you know eat dinner early and when it goes late the blood stops flowing to my lower extremities.

Specifically about office hours. None of us are as smart as all of us. And like that that's kind of been my takeaway from the whole experience. specifically on the Monday show. Uh it is that my fellow panelists have pretty great media taste.
We get some pretty good recommendations.
Um it's one of the things that has has stayed all the way through. I think we've had content recommendations on every show. Uh John, what's your experience?
>> Number of years I had class that was Monday night. You don't want to be competing with Monday Night Football.
The the thing that I've learned the most is that having a crew really helps. The work I do with the state parks are one-person shows. They're doing the production and presenting. And it really is nice when you have somebody pushing the buttons and all you have to do is think about what you're going to say and how you're going to say it and you know worrying about what remark Chris will make about F1 racers.
>> Exactly.
It's real.
>> Chris, what do you want to say?
>> What Carl mentioned about we know how to interact with each other. Uh, it's really fascinating when you spend time on the Zoomer with people that haven't done it as much as this crowd of people.
Insert insert gallery view there. Uh, because thank you because we do understand the delay. We do understand that there are times when you absolutely can't interject and then there's times when you might be able to sneak something in and even as well as we understand it the delay and the latency and bears oh my uh it's still it's still hard to do and we don't do it well uh all the time but sometimes we do it really well and it's hard to explain. I remember the first time Alex introduced the Mukana thing, the the the the ch the question and answer thing and the ability to electronically raise your hand.
And the first time I I raised my hand and I saw, oh, he's going to go to me next. and I was able to unmute my mic and get ready and then jump on it when I got called.
Like there was this giant light bulb moment. It's like, "Oh, I totally get it." So, a lot of a lot of what can be perceived as a smooth, elegant presentation here is because of all the hard work that goes in uh goes on backstage and with some of the tech that we use. It's hard to describe how important it is.
>> Yeah. Yeah, that's fair. Yeah. You know, this this show was uh um an opportunity to test out some different ways of doing the production, right? So it was like it was initially being able to play with other other content um other um uh online cloud services and so Vector and and uh Mimma Live and things like that.
And so then offering another time zone, which as Carl said, being able to do this um during a more reasonable daylight hour for us um was was nice was both Carl and I did a long stints of every night um getting up and and um being involved in office hours which we enjoyed but of course that takes its toll. Um, and so being able to do that and so then it was an opportunity to do something just a little bit different than the other shows, particularly when we were doing still doing a Monday morning show and then doing a Monday night um was to try to do something a little bit different where we could talk a little bit longer about some things um and have a different style. And I think that's mostly continued through and um even introducing the panel um it's something that I I like. Um, people haveve I've I've had people write to me about that. Um, as to whether they like that or not. Um, but I I like the idea that we're um it's a different style of doing it where the panel is a bit smaller and uh and we're thinking of the the different skills that we have on the panel um means that it then people target their questions towards the panel. So, but I've I've certainly enjoyed it and um it's it's been a a fun ride and I think the content recommendations is a cool one as well cuz you just get a little bit of insight into what people um are thinking and the type of personalities and the amount of YouTube it normally YouTube channels that I've now subscribed to it's every week I'm always adding one or two um which is nice. So, good question.

Next one comes in from Ros McNelte in Vancouver, Canada. Anything you've heard about the cigar going on right now here in Los Angeles and its highlights. Just >> Jason, I can't speak to its highlights, but I can show you something that I thought was pretty cool. This is splat foley. And basically the idea is you get a 3D model in of of the environment that you're going to be shooting in. And you get a self-correcting spatial audio out way of doing this, which again is going to make no sense unless you've done production and had to play around with Foley. It can be very complicated. And if this can do half of what I think it can do, yeah, it'll be pretty cool.

>> Yeah. Does Does Splat Foley live in a van down by the river?
>> It does.
>> The uh the thing to if you want to look at what papers are being presented.
They're they're presenting a lot of papers this year on uh immersive video like something that Jason was just talking about with audio uh and uh a variety of other the place to go to uh for this information is the paper digest for cigar 2026 which lists all the papers that are have been posted here uh from uh for this particular meetup. Uh so you can see what what topics are being presented you know mesh generation with diffusion large scale diverse synthetic data set for point tracking you know policy based foviated imaging and perception and scale consistent one pass estimation of 3D geometry and other such scintillating topics. Uh so if you're interested in visual effects uh or just uh you know uh a you know computer generation of images in general uh it's a changing world out there with AI taking over the reigns of a lot of this stuff and being used as a tool uh for not only for image generation but for physics generation now in uh doing animation. So uh it's a whole new world out there. I haven't had a chance to go to it even though I am in Los Angeles but uh cuz you know my legs go to sleep after an hour of being here on extra but had I the energy I would go take a look.

>> Next question comes from Rosco Jones from Madison, Indiana. How do you make concise on demand videos that offer step-by-step walkthroughs, topic summaries, and uh practical applications? This is what students say they want to watch this fall.
>> Jason, yeah, but they don't. I I would actually start with the more important question.
What What do you want to make easy?
Because you're not in school to simply learn how to follow a list. You don't need school for that. You really want to be able to understand why things are the way that they are and how they happen the way that they should. So, I would actually turn it around and say, "Your assignment is to make an extremely concise video about something you know a lot about because that is way harder to do." And that will show them that taking a whole bunch of information and condensing it down is not the same as being wise to the ways that these things can go wrong.
That's fun. John, >> I taught Camtasia for a long time. Uh I taught in the area of instructional technology and there are a lot of tools.
Camtasia happens to be one of them for doing screen capture and doing training.
Uh but it's not a simple task to do as Jason said. What I'm doing now is I'm using a tool called QC cam presenter and it lets you do the video pencil. It lets you do a lot of screen capture. let you do outlines and it's a very different step by step if you're trying to give an advanced organizer for a student. These are all the steps you're going to do versus a step by step where you expect them to follow you, pause the machine, go to the next step, go to the next step. And um I've taught for 37 years.
Sometimes students say what they want, but it's not what they really want. So you have to try, see, get feedback. But I was for me the the main thing I did students wanted to have step by step where they could do a step, pause, do the next step, pause, go back and forth.
Um unlike on a lot of YouTube videos where you just have to constantly going back and forth, back and forth. You can really pace them so students can follow along with some of the more complicated networking things and operation of some hardware.
>> Nice one. What a good panel for this.
Chris, >> I really like what Jason said about throw I mean, you didn't say these words. I'm going to throw it back in the kid's face. First of all, they don't know what they want. Throw it back in the kid's face and let them make a video short and concise, fast-paced about something that they know really well.
Rosco, uh, give them the assignment to explain something and then when they're done with their video, say, "That's great.
Make it half as long. Like literally, we're going to count. You know, you have 3 minutes and 15 seconds. You now have what is that? I could have should have picked four 4 minutes and 15 and 16 seconds, you get 2 minutes and 8 seconds, whatever. And and challenge them to do that. And we've probably all seen the videos where somebody will give instructions on how to do something and then the person listens to those instructions and follows them verbatim.
It's usually like a cooking thing, you know, like take take the take the milk out and you know, they just they just like that's not what I meant, but you weren't more clear. So, I think put it put it in the kids' face and let them make some videos and I think I think that's super educational with the challenge of making it shorter.

>> So, if you have to make a how-to for a subject you're teaching, let's let's say you're um how to set up a tripod, how to set up a light on a light stand, that kind of stuff. Um you can do them pretty concisely if you if you're if that's what you have to do, but always start the video with the final product so they know what it should look like at the end. Uh it's like a jigsaw puzzle on the outside of the box is, you know, is the final puzzle solved. Um, but then you if you're going to shoot this and you want to do it kind of quickly and concisely is actually shoot it in reverse. So if you have something set up, like if you have like a backdrop set up or a camera on a dolly setup, do that first and then disassemble it and then shoot yourself. You can shoot the whole thing like a time-lapse, but you don't have to do that. Shoot each part disassembled. So I wouldn't shoot forward. I would shoot backwards. So essentially it's like you're packing up, but you're not showing it that way.
You're going to edit it. So it's going the other other direction, but show it coming apart um rather than going together because if if you do it going together, you may get a fork in the road where you can go two different ways. If you start with the finished product that the way you want to show it and then go backwards, um it's kind of like a it's kind of it's tricky to explain. A good way is showing so you something you've created. Let's say you've created a a movie poster in um Photoshop. show the movie poster final and then you can actually just undo all the layers and then put back the layers on in order that you want to show them. That's what you're really doing and but you're really shooting layers but then you're going to reverse them and show them in chronological order to get to the final product. But deconstruct the reason why because if you deconstruct you don't get to this. It's really quick. It's really quick because you don't have to think about anything because you're just deconstructing it. This is why packing up is way faster than setting up. Um, and two, uh, every step won't contradict because if you set up and you go, "Oh, I changed my mind." You have to shoot it again because you've changed your mind on how to set it up. So, doing it reverse, you have to, it's really fast.
It's really quick. Um, you can do it with digital stuff. So, software stuff, as I said, like Photoshop's a good example. You can start turning off layers, but then to show them what happens, you can just turn back on the layers cuz you're going to the finished product that you're going to show anyway. Um, so if you have to make these videos and like you just have to make them, um, make the video of you deconstructing it and then re-edit it so it looks like you're constructing it.
That way there's no contradictions.
And Jason, >> yeah, for for, you know, monkey see monkey do type things where like all you actually have to do is see something on the screen and and be able to mimic it, there are tasks where this will work really well. The reason I chose it and I like Fenwick's addendum to it which is okay now make it half as long is that there is this universal psychological construct called a curse of knowledge whereby the more you know about something the the more difficult it is to be succinct about it which is why you get these hi guys be sure to like and subscribe and then before you know it this guy's been talking for 20 minutes about how to update a video router and it's like look I don't need every possible thing what I need for you to do is take everything that you Oh, think about it enough to give me something concise from start to finish. So if there are three branches, USB, network with switch and network directly into computer, then those are the three things that you show, right? That's the hard part and that's why I think it makes a lot more sense to show people this this kind of difficulty in order to get them to see that not everything has a cheat sheet. And that's by design.
That's not a bad thing.
John, >> I just I'm so impressed, Chris, that you without getting a PhD got the teaching skill of when you get a hard question saying that's a great question, figure it out and report it to the class. So that that's good.
>> You don't need a PhD for that. Come on.
The other thing I will say is that during co and even now as you know I have some work with zoom and teaching people how to use it and there was a group of us who started creating tutorials in the style IKEA furniture building. We wasted a lot of time but it was a lot of fun. I should pull some of those out.
>> No it's fun.
>> Yeah. Plan ahead. Um b write out your bullet points. put them on a teleprompter and when you do your presentation uh make sure that you uh follow follow the plan and present everything in a cohesive uh regimented val uh form and then when you're done edit it do any editing and when you upload it to YouTube here's here's a great trick you know that video that we looked at as the first question today shows a great example of this for YouTube videos if you're going to create an educational video or an instructional video it's really handy to index it and index it. Uh, this in this Linus Tech Tips video is indexed and you can see as you scroll along the timeline, it has an a a topic name and uh the time for each of these topics that they discussed during this video. And as you scroll through, you can find the ones that you might be interested in and jump to it.
Uh and it also shows you a little heat map of uh you know where the the best parts of that particular segment are popularity-wise from the little lumps in the uh in the graph uh there at the bottom of the screen. So, if you take a tutorial in YouTube preparation and indexing to figure out how to index it and then make all your bullet points or all your major topics have indexes so people can jump back or go back to review something without having to search through your hourlong YouTube video to find what they're looking for.
>> Marty, when we were creating instructional materials, we did that and it was really great. It was interesting with the heat map. It did two things.
either it was a part that was really interesting and people wanted to see it and we said we'll do more like that but we also found that some of the parts where the heat map was high we were confusing them and people had to see it over and over again to finally get it.
So the heat map they show something is really important or something that you need to expand.
>> Final Cut calls those markers by the way the indexing are called markers.
>> Index markers. Yes. Mhm. Uh >> chapters.
>> Yeah. I I was going to say that before as far as the um uh h having a shorter version like Alex used to talk about this where where having videos that were like there's a one minute version and that's kind of where it starts like this is what you need to know like this boiled down here's the key things that you need to know and then let's unpack it in more detail if you want that. But you might find that in that first 30 seconds or a minute, you you you know everything you need or at least that little tip that gets you going as far as you need to go or you can continue watching and get more detail. And I think one thing we haven't mentioned in there is AI, the use of AI. I think one of the things that that uh the large language models are particularly good at is um collapsing succincting, you know, like making uh large amounts of content into smaller amounts of content. And so if that's the case, then having a longer video that goes through all the details that then could be passed into Notebook LM or something like that that you can just post the YouTube video in. it's going to pull the transcript in and then ask it some questions. Um is very powerful. I've been playing around with that. Um some of you know I have this uh with Blue we have this um platform called Ovio and every week we do Q&A a 2-hour Q&A session where we walk through a bunch of um the things with people's questions. Well, I've taken the 150 or so um videos, put them into Notebook LM, and now asking it just questions about how to use Ovio, it's pretty amazing what it comes back with based on the transcripts of of what we had. So, giving it a lot of data um and then asking succinct questions uh is very powerful. So, I would think leaning on that as well would be a helpful thing.
So, all right, last question.

Angelo Jack from Brooklyn, New York says he's needing to play back mini DV cassettes for possible archiving project. Could the panel recommend a player unit and where one might acquire such an old tech?
Hm. Chris, >> uh, my recommendation, and I you made a lot of money in the DSR world. Um, my favorite deck was the DSR45.
Um, it was a good balance of uh, robust enough, but also um, it worked well. I at one point I owned a DSR 1500 that none of my computers could talk to reliably over the FireWire port.
Not that any computers have FireWire ports anymore, but that DSR 1500 made me so angry because I spent a whole lot of money on it and it never worked right.
Uh, I would buy a DSR45 in a heartbeat if you needed to play a bunch of DV tech. Where to find it? Good could good could good could good could good could good could good could good could good could good could good could good could grief. I don't know.
>> And and try to connect it via via FireWire.
Well, if you had a really old computer uh that still had a FireWire port, this this thing it it was just it was a powerhouse. It was a good deck. It had it had a nice little menu up front here.
It had all the ins and the outs and stuff in the back and including the FireWire jack right there.
>> They weren't they weren't cheap, right, back in the day that >> uh it was well I tell you it was about a third as much as the the 1500 was.
DSR45. It was in the It was four grand or something like that. I don't know.
Maybe less. I I can't remember. That was a generation ago.
>> Yeah.
>> And now they're 90 cents a pound.
>> Yeah. I mean, this one, this particular one is available on eBay, but I wouldn't I wouldn't buy a deck on eBay. Who knows how many grilled cheese sandwiches went inside the the tape transport. Uh, but there's some that for 640 bucks on eBay.
But the DSR45 was a good was a good deck. I really like that deck.
>> Yeah, K.
>> So, the other way to do this is to simply cuz all you're looking at is getting the zeros and ones off of the mini DV tape and getting them on a hard drive. So, there's no change in quality depending on how you do this. You just need a working deck. Um, just getting a Sony camcorder. So Sony had the best tape transport, so the best mechanisms inside the camcorders. Panasonics were quite good. Um, Panasonics were a lot more expensive to get the same quality as Sony. Um, and then Canon of course bought decks from Sony. So if you get a Canon one as a Sony one, but they're generally not as good um as the Sony one. So you can just buy a consumer Sony mini DV camcorder that has FireWire.
Some of them didn't have FireWire, some really cheap ones. Um, and then you need to do the FireWire dongle. So Apple kept this alive for a long long time where they sold the um 800 FireWire to Thunderbolt 2 and then the Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 which I think they still sell that one and then into a modern computer. The other option is what I have. I have a laptop from 2010 that has a Fire 800 port and all I've got to do is get the zeros and ones off that tape. So I can plug in a camcorder directly to my MacBook from 2010 with a FireWire cable. Get the zeros and ones off. But it doesn't matter. It's just an Intel computer of course. Um and then I can put it onto whatever. So I have a laptop from the age. If you are doing a lot of this, I would strongly think about getting a laptop from Apple, an Apple MacBook that has FireWire 800 on it. It will save you a lot of time with dongle problems because there's a lot of companies that because Apple has stopped selling the FireWire 800 to Thunderbolt, which means the counterfeits are through the roof now. and the counterfeits will charge 200 bucks because that's what people are charging for genuine ones because they're now out of production.
They used to be 50 bucks on on apple.com. So, because of that, I would strongly suggest looking at buying a MacBook from uh 2010 2011 that still had FireWire on it. So, 2011 is when Thunderbolt was launched. Um, and use that as essentially a dongle. Really, it's just a data dongle. Um, so you can hook up the FireWire stuff um directly.
Um, and it still works. You simply just and if you need to run the most latest, take that MacBook if you buy a secondhand or if you find a relative that has one that's sitting on a cupboard, take it to the Apple store, ask them to put the latest genuine um operating system that can run on it.
Don't go I know you can kind of put new Don't do that. You need one that supports FireWire. So go to the Apple store. The Genius Bar will do that for you. Um you know, you may have to go away have a coffee, come back, but they'll do it for you. Um and that's it.
And you do kind of that that computer will just become a FireWire ingest machine. Um, but that's one way to do it. Or you can do dongle therapy, which is usually you're going to have to have a a 400 to 800 cable, 800 to Thunderbolt 2 cable, and a Thunderbolt 2 Thunderbolt 3 cable, which is a it is a common thing archist do use, but there's two ways to do it.
>> Jason, Mac OS Sequoia was the last version that fully supported uh FireWire. So you could actually go pretty far up to the most current um in order to a and have full support. So with that in mind, yeah, just decide how far down this rabbit hole you want to go. You could actually, if you wanted, get a Thunderbolt 800 card PCIe, get a PCIe to Thunderbolt adapter. That is the way that will hopefully always work. And if it works once, it is going to continue to work. I think Carl's solution is better, assuming you can switch out a 2010 hard drive to an SSD because you're going to make yourself crazy trying to upgrade Mac OS onto a mechanical hard drive. But that said, there are Apple Silicon um machines that will allow you to do this with you the latest version of um of Mac OS that they allow. Well, no, actually I take that back. Tahu is the latest version. Seo is the last one before that. So, pretty much the penultimate version.
>> Yeah, Courtney.
>> Well, you guys are all assuming he has a Mac. Why? I don't know. FireWire. Who needs Who needs Thunderbolt? You know, just get you a uh you know, a USB to I mean a FireWire uh six pin to uh USB3 adapter and plug it into any computer to capture out of it. So, you know, you have to have software that's going to support that input over the uh the DV with the DV codeex if you want to edit it or do anything on the computer itself. But, uh you can capture it at least to get it into a file if >> because those never slide audio and video after a 40 minutes, right?
>> To an adaptive that cost $8. So >> there is the remote possibility that they have time code logs or need to to to take all the time code with it too though.
>> In which case FireWire 1394 is really the way to do this.
>> But any capture software will probably support any any data stream coming in.
And you just have to have that DV codec which is the the tricky part if you're going to want to see it and edit it in your uh in your video software.
So this is this is my recommendation.
My my recommendation is heritagebox.com.
Um make it someone else's problem.
>> Just so everyone else is served.
>> It's a service. Make it someone else's problem. Um because the thing is that they're going to have the gear. They they do it all the time. They maintain it. And even though I know you said you may want to like you want to view it to see if you want to digitize it, but for about 70 bucks it seems you can do tapes, three tapes. Um, and uh, and so I just think you you will save money on not having to buy the equipment and you'll save the headache of actually having to try to go through the whole process and then they're just going to give you a a hard drive or a download um, of the whole drives of the whole tapes. You might as well just have the whole lot. Um, >> that's why I suggested Sony camcorder so you can actually take a look at what you're doing before you do it because that'll show you the Sony camcorder will show you >> that's Sony camcorders so you >> Yeah, but it's like 100 bucks on eBay.
>> So >> yeah, >> you still need you still need a machine that can still Yeah, I understand the service is good, but if you've got lots of tapes and that that service will cost you 500 bucks compared to 100 bucks. It depends how much money you want to burn >> and it's how much do you want to spend on your time, you know? So, >> how how valuable was your time to this project? Yeah.
>> Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, I did it recently. I needed to do VHS. Well, recently as in a few years ago, and I went and picked up a VHS um recorder and I and I played out and and I think the heads were super dirty and I just wish I never even bothered. I wish I just sent the tapes off to get them done for me.
Would have been better. But anyway, there you go. So, you got some varied options there. Um, all right. We're going to do a a quick round of content recommendations.
Um, and Jason's up first. What have you got?
>> All right, Fenwick, this one's for you.
In 2022, this came out, but I completely spaced on it. I I don't know what was happening. I don't know, COVID or something, but uh The Penta as on Netflix is a Mike Meyers doing a whole bunch of whole bunch of parts and it is hysterical. It is absolutely hysterical. And I didn't realize this until I pulled up the Wikipedia page. It is based on the conspiracy theories that he went over or or mentioned in So I Married an Axe murderer which is truly one of the best dark comedies I I think at least in the last 30 years. So definitely if you haven't seen the penta it's worth watching.
Good one. John, what have you got? In following up on uh training videos, in September of 2020, we had the office hours coffee challenge, which was a little video on how you make coffee. So, you might want to take a look at that.
My other content recommendation is a live one. I went to see the play um maybe happy endings in Broadway and I sat in two different seats and it really I was sort of a Broadway freak but um it was very interesting to see the show. We sat up real close so you could see the stage and stage movement and sat in a better seat in the back and it reminded me how hard it is to do live audio across the theater. But maybe Happy Ending is a great play and the coffee challenge. My two recommendations for the week.

>> Uh, so my one this week is I've been looking at a lot of media from the 1920s and 30s recently. Um, and this one is actually one I've known about for a long time, probably well over a decade. Um, and it's comes out of the uh US National Archives. So inside the US national archives they have a particular so in this particular this is a YouTube channel but in the archives they have all the films from the 1930s and well 1920s and 1930s for the national parks.
So during especially during the 20s they did a lot these were silent of course cuz there was no sound in the 20s but in the 1930s they went and revisited some of these parks and you actually got to see if you compare the two films one from the 20s from the 30s you see how uh the New Deal which was a lot of money was put into national parks and after the depression and actually you know get jobs all around the country and that kind of stuff. So these this particular playlist on that YouTube channel will have some of the films from the 1920s and 1930s um that were made to essentially as as you know 10 15 20 minute ads they'll show in cinemas to say hey come visit the parks but they're an amazing resource for taking a look at um like for instance Glacia National Park in these films you can actually see Glacia National Park with its glacia.
The glacia is relatively small now. It's hard to actually go see from a distance.
You have to kind of go up on top of the mountain and see the glacia now. Um, but back in the 1920s and 30s, Glacia was much larger and you could see it from essentially the main road. It's probably easiest way of saying it. Um, so these videos are a really good treasure trove if you want to take a look at one, the national parks around the US when they were kind of set up and being built or or built out. Um, and also just a real interesting history into how films were made 100 years ago. How they wanted to essentially tourism films is probably the best way of saying it 100 years ago.

Courtney, >> uh, dipping once again back into the, uh, website, the YouTube channel called Serious Feather. Uh, they just dropped uh, Brett Sander, Brett Gregory, who runs that, uh, channel, just dropped another uh, behindthe-scenes documentary of the film MASH. If you were interested in the original Robert Alman film MASH, uh, this is a very interesting documentary, and it's all no AI here.
This is all built up with actual interviews from, you know, Robert Alman and uh David Brown, the producer, the director, even Ring Lardner, who was the screenwriter, who won the Academy Award for writing the screenplay, which the actors uh point out during this documentary interviews that none of them adhered to the the script at all. And they would joke and say things like, "Oh, the writers here today, quick, bring out the scripts." Uh because they never had them on the set. they added a lot of the dialogue and yet he won an Academy Award for best screenplay because he he felt because he was one of the Hollywood 10 which they talk about quite a bit the blacklisted writers uh during the investigating the McCarthy uh witch hunts of the uh uh communist era.
Uh so he was one of the blacklisted authors of the 10 Hollywood 10. So, it's interesting that a screenplay for that, but interesting. If you've enjoyed the movie MASH, this is a great behindthe-scenes look at how the movie got made, all the trials and tribulations of getting it produced and getting it green lit and uh shooting. It was really lowbudget and following what Almond had in mind. uh and all the the little ideas of the like the speaker, you know, cut to the speaker uh with the uh guy reading the what's showing tonight at the cinema at the mash unit.
It was always interesting. It was an afterthought done completely in the editing.

Uh mine is uh Drive to Survive, which we've talked about a lot. Um, another >> I'm in, >> yeah, I'm in season five now. Um, and uh, I'm very much enjoying it. The thing is that I think what's what is amazing is the storytelling that they that they do in it, you know, like and um, it's so well made that you kind of well, I find that I'm going I'm kind of rooting for whoever it is that that episode is about.

Um what what is interesting is I I just find that it's great storytelling to the point where um yeah, you get to know pretty much all 20 of the it seems of the drivers or most of them. And and so when you're jumping around from episode to episode, I I find that I'm I um I'm really going for whoever it is that that story is about. Um which is a really interesting way to follow sport. Um to have background on on all of >> No spoilers, but I think season 6 may be a bit disappointing for you in that regard.

And my example of this was, oh, here's how you assemble a PC in 35 seconds.

The whole purpose of teaching is to deconstruct everything you know and be able to boil it down in a way that makes it useful. And this was just my example of this is not useful, right? It doesn't matter how fast it is. You could go frame by frame and it still wouldn't make any sense, >> right?
