[00:00:01]In this video, we will demonstrate an old, primitive technique of rooting a branch while it is still on the parent plant.

[00:00:10]We will get a brand new fig clone, but you can do this with many other plants as well.

[00:00:17]What is amazing is that we will use an orange as a rooting ball.

[00:00:25]We need one orange.

[00:00:27]Since we have chosen the branch we want to root, we take a drill bit of the same diameter as that branch.

[00:00:56]Then we cut the orange in half.

[00:01:07]We will clean out the inside so that only the peel remains.

[00:01:14]We will fill the peel with material that will enable rapid rooting of the branch.

[00:01:22]We make the mixture from peat and horticultural sand, with the addition of water.

[00:01:40]The mixture must be very wet, like mud.

[00:01:55]We fill the orange peels with mud.

[00:02:20]Let's return to our branch now.

[00:02:28]At the spot where we want the root to form, we will strip away the bark.

[00:02:42]We will fit the filled orange peel onto that spot and secure it with toothpicks.

[00:03:21]To maintain favorable conditions with enough moisture for root formation, I wrap the orange in plastic wrap.

[00:03:35]Keeping the moisture in is crucial, because without it, it won't succeed.

[00:03:42]I will secure the plastic wrap with zip ties on the top and bottom sides.

[00:03:56]Now we need patience.

[00:03:58]It takes a minimum of 30-40 days for the branch to root properly.

[00:04:10]I am returning after enough time has passed.

[00:04:13]The orange peel has started to rot and fall apart.

[00:04:17]It serves as our biodegradable container.

[00:04:21]It is fine that it is decaying, because it has done its job.

[00:04:28]Our branch has grown plenty of leaves and has new, bright green leaves at the top.

[00:04:36]That is a good sign.

[00:04:41]I cut the branch below the orange.

[00:04:52]I remove the plastic wrap and the remnants of the orange peel.

[00:05:19]The branch has successfully rooted.

[00:05:23]We will transplant it as a new plant.

[00:05:27]In a pot, I make a mixture of substrate and horticultural sand.

[00:05:52]Figs like to have a bit of sand.

[00:05:57]When we transplant the fig, thorough watering is a must.

[00:06:08]Once it takes root even better in the pot, I will transplant it outdoors.

[00:06:30]Pull a small bag filled with water over the cut section of the branch, so that the branch is in contact with the water.

[00:06:50]Leave it to stand for 30 days and here is the result.

[00:07:11]The branch should be cut so that it separates from the tree while the root remains.

[00:07:17]That is how we got a fig clone, meaning a new plant that we can plant.

[00:07:23]Air layering is a vegetative technique of plant propagation.

[00:07:28]It allows you to form a new root on a chosen branch while it is still connected to the parent plant.

[00:07:35]Once the root develops, the branch is separated and planted as a completely new, independent plant.

[00:07:43]This method is ideal for fruit trees and ornamental shrubs that are harder to root with classic cuttings.

[00:07:50]For example, figs, citrus fruits, roses, magnolia... It can be done almost all year round.

[00:08:00]In our climate zone, this technique is most successfully done during April, May, and June.

[00:08:12]You don't need plastic balls or complicated equipment.

[00:08:16]One orange, a little soil, and a little water are enough to get a completely new, free plant from a single branch.
