Revelation Ron 3 | Three Misconceptions of the Last Supper

[00:00:00]So, this is the next segment in the Revelation Ron series, and I really do enjoy doing these, but I do encourage you to remember this is just my opinion from what I've learned, my studying. You have to study this for yourself. Don't take my word and don't think I'm always right, even though Amy does.

[00:00:16]But today, I want to talk about the Last Supper. Such a big misconception on the Last Supper. I'm going to give you the first misconception. When I ask you what the Last Supper looks like, you're going to more than likely tell me that 12 guys were sitting around Jesus at this big long table in this little room and in the back of these mountains and an open window um and they're all eating and that is absolutely nothing like the Last Supper. That is Michelangelo's 13th century rendition of the Last Supper.

[00:00:45]And that's what is the most well-known visual that people keep in their minds.

[00:00:51]You have to go back to the hermeneutics of what was happening at this time if you really want to dig in and understand the Bible. And the hermeneutics are there was no window in the upper room.

[00:01:01]And they didn't have a big table back then. Um the best way to describe it is if you've ever seen a movie where the Romans are laying on their side and they're eating grapes in like this lay down chair. That's how they ate at these meals. They would actually lay on their sides and lay on their backs and eat.

[00:01:16]This is also how Jesus was able to walk around and wash their feet. so that you have a visual understanding of the last supper. It wasn't anything like Michelangelo painted. This is a dark, dusky room. It has one door in the front, no windows in the back. And this is where it occurred. Well, this also occurred during Passover. And you have to understand Passover. Um, it's part of the Jewish tradition. So, what I want to talk about today is how, in my opinion, Jesus was the fourth cup of Passover on the cross. And it's it's great. um just a study into this. It doesn't change salvation. It doesn't change, you know, your relationship with God or if you even don't believe in God. It's just it's really neat biblical hermeneutic knowledge. So during Passover, they had four cups, okay? And they were drank at four different times during the feast.

[00:02:07]The first cup was called the cup of sanctification, and it was a it's called kdish. Please don't hate me if I mispronounce these these words, but this cup of sanctification was drunk at the beginning of the meal to represent God's promise in the Old Testament for us, but at the time it was in their Torah that I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. So this this cup is to say, "Hey, I'm going to bring you out from slavery, from bondage. I'm I'm going to bring my people out." And that's what that cup represented. The second cup is called the cup of deliverance and it's the hagoda.

[00:02:45]This is so that they would sit and recall the story of Exodus and it represents I will rescue you from their bondage. So they they tell the story of how Moses went and fled the Egyptians and the Red Sea parted and he he took the people and they separated and the Red Sea crashed down upon the Egyptians and this is how they remember that by drinking this second cup. So the third cup was called the cup of redemption and it was ba hamas or maybe haman. Again, forgive my pronunciation. You know, I do the best I can. I am countries of baked bean sandwich.

[00:03:22]But this cup was drunk after the main meal. So once they finished the meal and they're still talking, they would drink this cup. and it represents um God saying, "I will redeem you without stretched arms." That's a very prominent cup to note because it represents that I will redeem you without stretched arms. And as we know when Jesus gets to the cross, his arms are outstretched. So at this point, Jesus is symbolically becoming part of the Passover. And where it really changes is when they do the fourth cup. And the fourth cup is the cup of praise, the halal.

[00:04:05]Now the cup of praise is consumed after reciting psalms. So they would recite psalms uh praise God, do memories and basically they would then drink this fourth cup.

[00:04:20]And the fourth cup's representation was I will take you as my people.

[00:04:26]So when you go to looking into the meal and you start looking through the gospels, once they drank the third cup at this Passover, they left. They never drank the fourth cup. And that's where the story gets really interesting because Passover cannot end until you drink the fourth cup, which again is the cup of praise. Now, the Bible clearly says that Jesus at the last supper and his disciples drink the third cup. And then once they drink the third cup, before they get up, Jesus makes a vow.

[00:05:00]And basically, he vows not to drink the fruit of the vine again until the coming of the kingdom of God. And then they leave the upper room.

[00:05:13]So Jesus doesn't drink the fourth cup.

[00:05:15]Says, "I will not drink of the vine again." until the coming of the kingdom of God and then they leave the upper room. That's very significant because now Passover has not ended. Here's the other thing you have to understand before we go further is we in our society deem days as midnight to midnight. In the Jewish culture, they deem days as sunset to sunset.

[00:05:38]So there we we do our 24-hour day based on midnights. They do their day based on sunset to sunset. The last supper occurred after sunset. Okay, Jesus was crucified on the same day as the last supper. How's that possible?

[00:05:54]Because it was the next day. Keep in mind at sunset a new day begins. So here we have Jesus at the last supper with his disciples. And then he departs to the garden of Gethsemane.

[00:06:04]And in the garden of Gethsemane, this is where Jesus asks him to stay awake while he goes and prays. and he prays so hard and has so much stress that he has blood actually come from his eyes which is is very symbolic to me. I think we're foreshadowing here the rest of the day, but again, we're still in the same day because this is after sunset. And while Jesus is there, he asked the father to let this cup pass from him.

[00:06:37]Referring to the fourth cup of Passover, this cup, very specific, this cup, let this cup pass from me. Because Jesus is about to be the fourth cup. And I mean, man, it really it gives me chills when I talk about this. Um, but while dying on the cross, so here we go to the next day. Jesus comes back.

[00:07:02]They've strung him up on the cross. Now his arms are outstretched. And Jesus is on the cross and they offer him a mixture that has a painkiller in it. And the Bible's very clear that he turns this down because he wants to be totally in field with everything going on and he's going to take on the full suffering of the six hours of crucifixion. So he denies this drink with the painkiller in it so that at least he can, you know, basically if you take enough painkillers, you can kind of drift off. And that's the goal here is the is these soldiers would give them this liquid mixed with a a natural painkiller and it would just help him ease on out of life. And so um Jesus then said after about the sixth hour I thirst. Now keep in mind he's been whipped with the cat of nine tails more than 40 lashes. His back is shredded open. He's buck naked on the cross in front of his mother and friends. He has been bleeding profusely for six hours. They stab his side and water rushes out. And if you know anything about the human body, um, when your organs start shutting down, they start building water up around them. You hear people getting fluid around their heart, fluid around their lungs. Um, it's widely believed that's the fluid, the water that ran out. So, here's Jesus on the cross. He's dehydrated. He has no blood. He's right on the brink of death.

[00:08:25]And he says, "I thirst.

[00:08:27]I thirst."

[00:08:29]And so one of the soldiers takes and dips a sponge in some wine vinegar, which is a very sour wine. And I believe the name of that vinegar is pocha or pusca, but he takes and dips it in this really sour wine. And he's got it on a um I think it's a hiscus branch and he leans it up to Jesus. Now at this time, Jesus can probably barely talk. His mouth is completely dry. His throat is all dry. He has no fluids in his body.

[00:09:00]But he leans this up to Jesus and Jesus puts it to his mouth and consumes this wine.

[00:09:11]And this is where the story all culminates into a absolute symbolic act of love. Now remember I told you that after the third cup um they recited psalms.

[00:09:27]So, here's Jesus. He's thirsting. And at some point, either right be right before he was thirsting or during the crucifixion, the timeline is, you know, I can't give you an exact timeline. I wasn't there videoing, but Jesus says, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

[00:09:47]In our Bible, that is Psalms 22.

[00:09:50]So Jesus is on the cross reciting Psalms which you have to do during the third cup going into the fourth cup during Passover.

[00:10:00]And then again he says, "I thirst."

[00:10:03]And the Roman soldier puts the sour vinegar wine up to his lips. And when he does, Jesus says, "It is finished."

[00:10:15]And then he gives up his life.

[00:10:18]So when you take communion next time, If you're a believer, whether you're Roman, Catholic, Christian, Baptist, Methodist, Presbyterian, I don't care. But when you take up your communion next time, remember that when it says, "Drink this in remembrance of me," to symbolically Jesus fulfilled the last supper and linked his suffering on the cross as the final act of the Passover meal.

[00:10:47]Jesus was the fourth cup. So when you drink that cup and you're remembering the story now, remember that was the end. And what you're drinking is the remembrance of how Jesus became the fourth cup of the Passover.
