[00:00:02][music] >> Hey buddy, it's Tyler here at the first championship. We're in the hopper division checking with the legendary 2056. It's OP Robotics. An incredible performance at provincials recently.

[00:00:16]Congratulations on that world record as well, too, coming into the matches. So cool to see them. Part of that world record as well, this incredible turret that this team has. Just watching that flow go all the way through is is methodical as we watch these matches. Uh for OP Robotics, I just caught them in a match. Looked fantastic for that as well. We do have a full overview on this robot here. A lot of great stuff with their intake. Maybe a lot more than that, I hear. We'll find out on that.

[00:00:39]But so many cool things to talk about with this team. Let's learn more about Learn more about them here on Behind the Bumpers.

[00:00:45]Jordan, let's start the breakdown. Let's learn about it a bit more starting with the intake they have. Your team is just so great at acquisition of fuel in this.

[00:00:52]So break it down more for me. Yeah, so we have a linear intake this year. So it extends. Do you want to extends It has two left-hand plates on either side. Um so that we're able to flex along the field so we don't break it during a collision.

[00:01:07]Um it makes us pretty strong going across the field. And we're not scared to enter the opponent's zone because we know that we won't break on impact. Um it's driven by The front rollers is driven by a X6 an X60 Kraken with our kicker bar at the bottom held by um these like surgical tubing.

[00:01:27]Um Yeah, so we drive around the field, it pops in through here and then it goes into our hopper. But we have this coating on our front rollers. It's just plain rubber. We found that it's been really useful for us. It helps to suck in the balls very quickly. And then connecting our electrical, we have um this chain we print ourselves.

[00:01:50]It's been very useful to keep all our wires very organized near the front of the robot.

[00:01:55]Yeah, that's about it. Looking at the competition season of how your team has been so good at ball acquisition, have you made any big changes to like your intake throughout the season? Our intake? Yeah, so in the beginning we didn't have the surgical tubing, but we found that it would get stuck on balls like this and there would be balls stuck against our bumper and it was very difficult to try to drive around that cuz we'd have to like do this whole movement to get rid of those balls. So we added these and then we've kind of been playing around with that until we found something that works. Um the rollers, it's kind of just like maintenance. Sometimes they rip, like there's a small rip right now that we'll probably change before later matches, but just small maintenance things, no major changes for the front of the intake. And we were talking earlier, uh you repurposed this net from a previous years as well, too. How's it working out for you here? It's been working pretty well. Um same thing, we've done a couple like minor changes to try to expand. Like during our first competition, >> [music] >> it was a lot smaller and then recently before we came to Houston, we tried to uh like optimize the size of it so that we could carry as many balls as we could. Right now we're at a capacity of around 62 balls, so we're pretty happy with that.

[00:03:42]Absolutely. As Pastor Bob Steven talked about the uh conveyor system as we follow the field through here and how your singular works as well, too. I mean, once again, just watching OP index fuel all the way through, it just seems so smooth in that process. Let's break it down a bit more.

[00:03:55]Uh yeah. So, we use um multiple hot dog rollers uh just covered in some neoprene rubber. Nothing too special. And that's just a live bottom that helps funnel the fuel into our conveyor. Uh you can see the last roller before a conveyor is actually just straight Lexan. That actually allows the balls to slip so that they don't get jammed going into our conveyor.

[00:04:14]Uh our conveyor is a very simple just top and bottom belts. Uh the bottom belt is a thicker uh rubber timing belt from SWCP.

[00:04:23]Uh and the top one is just a regular timing belt. That gives us just a perfect amount of compression to whip the balls up into our turret. We also have this roller in our robot that spins backwards, which actually another anti-jam preventing fuel from all jamming into our quarter pipe all at once.

[00:04:40]When you were uh going through the design for this season here, were there any big challenges in terms like, you know, when you want to hold this much fuel yet still be a low bot and all that stuff in regards to trying to package all this together? Uh absolutely. Uh a lot of that was focused in on our net um where once we decided that we wanted to use that to add a little bit more capacity, we were very worried about going under the trench.

[00:05:01]Um and additionally, the hopper flex with like polycarbonate uh is quite a lot. So, making sure that we don't flex too much and uh reach the frame perimeter is very important.

[00:05:11]>> Did you have to swap out like your thickness of polycarbonate or anything like that? Um we did change some of our polycarb thickness, but that was to add extra robustness. Got you. Now, let's talk about the uh turret on here. You know, to me, this is such a showpiece uh in Rebuild overall. So many teams have taken inspiration for what your team has done so far. Let's break it down a bit more and just tell us about why it's been so successful. Yeah, of course. So, um our turret, it's obviously single ball.

[00:05:37]So, here we have the cable chain.

[00:05:39]It's not bidirectional. We have this little spring here. We have 370° of freedom. So, we can wrap around one way 370° before we have to wrap around the other way.

[00:05:50]Um which is really helpful because it Yeah, we don't have to flip around too much driving on the field. Um the hood here when it goes up and down, it's driven by that one X44 and the flywheel here by these two X60s. They're all Krakens um just like the rest of the motors on the robot.

[00:06:10]Um also, for controls and LEDs, [music] we've always had LEDs. We really like them. Um especially for driver input when we're driving.

[00:06:17]Um so, if we're on a different alliance, so red or blue, they change colors. And depending on what we're doing on the field, like our state, they also change colors. So, when we're shooting, they're the color of our alliance and when we're not, they're red.

[00:06:31]Um also, if we're having a brownout or something like that, they will turn green and my controllers, like the Xbox controller, will rumble so that we know how to deal with that appropriately.

[00:06:40]Yeah.

[00:06:41]What's been the key, you know, for mechanically for your team of just getting so much throughput with the turret overall? Um I think, honestly, it's just it it's all about the conveyor, really. Um cuz our flywheel is just one speed. We don't crank that up or down.

[00:06:56]Um it stays at the same RPM. Um so, it all comes down to singulating and singulating fast. I think that's the main deal when it comes to the throughput.

[00:07:06]One of the other things that really makes this all come together, Daniel, is the programming uh for this robot here and you know, and when we talk about, you know, how to get something accurately, how to localize, how to get all the stuff that OP does so well, uh just talk to me more about what goes into it. And I was really curious to hear about like if this only runs at a single speed, how are you making sure you're getting accurate shots, too?

[00:07:24]Um so, with our turret, um we [music] only ever uh change our uh kicker wheel uh velocity here to give it more spin or our uh turret hood angle so that we can vary um for passing, we can vary where we're shooting or when it uh how far it goes when it stops.

[00:07:47]And for shooting into the hub, um we have [music] our shot fixed at a certain height um using a calculation so that we have the same time of flight uh and we never have collisions in the air.

[00:08:02]Being a lower robot, um have you guys put any thought into any sort of potential counter defense or anything like that with We're starting to see some other teams maybe put out some sort of hoods or blockers or anything like that. Has your team put any thought into what how you might approach that at championships? Um we have not put any thought into specific mechanisms to uh put onto a robot uh similar to MadTown's uh blocker.

[00:08:25]Um but we have looked at strategies on how we should be um how we might uh go about blocking someone.

[00:08:33]>> What what are some of those strategies like? Do you mind telling us? Mostly, we're not trying to play specifically defense, but we're very good as the turret. We're able to move around defense quickly, which is kind of our strength. So, our main form of defense is just stealing, really. Like as long as we can get the balls into our hopper and away from their zone, that's the best that we can do and it's more effective because we're getting as much fuel as we can away from them and to us.

[00:08:55]And Georgia, as we're filming this uh we've seen you play a couple matches here so far. Is there anything that's really changed here at the First Championship versus Ontario Provincials at all?

[00:09:03]>> Our first like a couple of regionals, we weren't really stealing at all. And then at our um at our provincial championship, we started to see that stealing was very useful because like whoever can obtain the most fuel and have the power over it, that's that's who's winning the match. [music] So, if we're able to go and steal fuel on the other side, that matters a lot more than our scoring period, honestly.
