With corruption, strikes, and protests, it might take decades. But, can you imagine building an underwater tunnel across a giant river in just 110 days? However, the Jinan Huanggang Road Yellow River Tunnel is one such underwater tunnel built by China in just 110 days. This giant tunnel is located beneath the Yellow River near Jinan City in China's Shandong Province. Currently, this is the underwater shield tunnel with the largest diameter in the world.

[00:00:38]Its outer width is 16.8 m. A question that might come to your mind now is why they built such a tunnel. According to a report by the navigation company AutoNavi, Jinan City held the title of the city with the most traffic jams in China for two consecutive years.

[00:00:54]Crossing this river was a huge struggle for the 9.4 million people of Jinan. For decades, this river had been the main part of the city and the northern districts. People only had bridges or ferries to cross the river. Both of these were very slow and crowded. There would always be kilometers-long traffic jams on the bridges. Because of this, a journey that should be completed in a short time would become a major misery.

[00:01:18]Ferry's were even slower. They also could not transport a lot of people at the same time. Therefore, Jinan City needed a good route to connect the northern and southern regions. You might ask why they couldn't just build more bridges, but building a bridge here is not that easy. Due to the river's topography and environmental issues, there are many construction limitations there. Even the existing bridges are built on the firmest parts of the river.

[00:01:42]To build new bridges again, the houses and buildings there would have to be demolished. With this, one thing became clear to the engineers. Either they had to take a high risk and build a bridge on the river's unstable soil, or they had to build a tunnel under the river.

[00:01:57]Thus, in September 2024, the Chinese team chose the second path. They decided to build the world's largest underwater shield tunnel. The goal is a highway tunnel with a total length of 5.75 km.

[00:02:11]Out of that, a 3.29 km section goes 50 m below the Yellow River. It is designed in such a way that vehicles can travel at a speed of 60 km/h. To save space, engineers designed this as a double-decker tunnel. Vehicles can travel from south to north on the upper deck and from north to south on the lower deck. This single tunnel managed to reduce costs by 15% compared to building two tunnels. It has been built giving great importance to safety. It can withstand the immense pressure of water and soil at the deepest part. For this construction, 500 large concrete rings were required. Each ring is made by perfectly joining multiple pieces together. Its total width is 16.8 m. It is a huge achievement that they were able to finish this work without even changing the front part or cutter head of the boring machine under the severe conditions beneath the river. Initially, many experts did not believe that it would be completed this fast. Normally, such massive projects could take years.

[00:03:17]But, there was a major challenge in this. The bed of the Yellow River is not solid rock. It lies in a mushy state mixed with soil and sand. There is also huge water pressure there. Then, how could the tunnel be built without it collapsing? This is where Shanhe comes in. This is a giant tunnel boring machine or TBM built jointly by a German company and a Chinese company. It is 163 m long and weighs 5,200 tons. That is roughly the weight of a small ship. Its massive size is not its only special feature. It It specially built to handle the severe pressure and the specific soil conditions under the river. Shanhe is a mixed shield machine. It uses air pressure to protect the soil from collapsing. It can bore very safely even under high pressure. Its soil removal system and the cameras to monitor the cutting face are highly advanced.

[00:04:08]Because of this, the workers did not have to directly step into the hazardous areas. Every day, this machine moved forward a distance of 16 to 18 m. Its operation was much faster compared to other similar machines. They completed this 3.29 km section, which began on September 1st, 2024, in just 110 days.

[00:04:28]As mentioned earlier, it is amazing that they were able to finish this without changing the boring cutter head even once. Time was saved by working in shifts 24 hours a day. Additionally, even under high pressure 50 m below the river, the systems inside the machine provided a safe working environment for the workers. Therefore, they did not need any special diving equipment. To prevent the tunnel from collapsing in the unstable soil under the Yellow River, concrete rings were being fixed as the Shanhe machine moved forward. For every 2 m it advances, the machine stops and installs a ring. It moved forward by building a waterproof shield behind it in this manner. The sensors and the hydraulic system inside the machine helped in its precise operation.

[00:05:10]Officials would constantly check if the machine was going on the correct route using lasers and hydraulic jacks. Truth be told, this is like performing a surgery using a 5,200 t robot.

[00:05:30]Kilometers of railway tracks were required just to transport each of its parts. The work continued day and night for all 110 days. During the night time, the priority was on the maintenance work of the machine. During the daytime, the goal was to tunnel through as quickly as possible. Although rain and snow posed obstacles to the work, the engineers overcame all of them. They used new techniques for the concrete to set in extreme cold. Within these 110 days, they set a record by completing 426 m of work in just 1 month. But along with this speed, there was also a huge risk.

[00:06:06]The soil under the river would keep changing with every meter. More than 1,500 workers worked hard using this machine. It is said that they discovered around 28 new technologies through this project. Great priority was also given to protecting the living creatures in the Yellow River. The work was completed without causing any problems to the drinking water or the flow of the river.

[00:06:28]Currently, this is the widest underwater tunnel in the world. Compared to its width, the Channel Tunnel in London is very small. You can guess its size if I say that a five-story building can fit inside it. Completing the work at such a speed was a new milestone in the history of tunnel construction.

[00:06:45]Even though the main part of the tunnel under the river, or the shield section, was completed quickly, work on the side roads or approach roads, electrical connections, ventilation system, and safety systems is still ongoing. The road and other works inside the tunnel will be completed by March 2026.
