Prince Rama Varma’s pedagogy is a masterclass in structural integrity, brilliantly demystifying the complex boundaries between improvisational freedom and stylistic rigor. It is a rare intellectual treat that elevates traditional music education into a profound study of cultural logic.

Power [singing] [music] [singing] [singing] >> [singing] [music] >> You want me?
>> Good morning. I'm think more people are due to come but it's great to start on time. So good morning and a very very very warm welcome sir. It's really Hyderabad. [laughter] >> It's very warm.
>> Big round of applause for sir.
[applause] Thank you for sparing the time and uh you know bringing up such gems for us.
Thanks to all the participants who are in the room in the despite the heat.
They braved the heat and came here. So thank you for that. Thank you for all the participants here and abroad who've registered and are attending. Thank you very much.
>> You can wave at the camera then they'll see online people.
>> Hi. Hi. [laughter] >> Hello. And uh thank you. And please people in the room keep your phone on side.
>> They're all waving back. So >> hi.
>> You have to wave there and >> okay [laughter] this >> Thank you. And um please keep your phones on silent that would make the experience more beautiful and um looking forward to wonderful two days sir and thanks to our audio and video. All the very best for two wonderful days. Thank you.
>> So we'll have um 2 hours continuously without a break. Yes sir. And if anyone wants to use the restroom, uh don't hold it in. You can just go out and >> Yeah, there's a restroom just behind. So outside.
>> Yeah.
>> Thank you so much.
>> So, so thank you for arranging this nice cool place in the heat. So nice to be here. So, uh good morning, good evening.
Those of you online, it's my pleasure to be here with you again unexpectedly.
Normally we have something in July or August. So we'll start with a very beautiful Kadanogam song by Vatala Rangos Swami whom I just discovered few months ago thanks to this lady here. So she is her guru's sister.
So aunt so I already uh sang and taught two of her compositions both first time inaugurated in Saptapney. So this is the third one. Um can somebody sing of one person you know it's a popular anybody raise your hand? Yeah.
>> Very nice. You know who invented kadavula?
Somebody knows?
Very very good. Yes. So in fact rauams sutami is the most famous composition.
So Patnham prayer only invented kadogulam. So I used to imagine he is just sitting and humming and he wants to sing sarama but he goes Oh, then he wrote, "Oh, I didn't sing two notes." So, he comes back, sings.
So, that's how the aronom came. Aonum that's simple, straight only. So, we'll just bring uh people have the wrong impression that we can elaborate shankaram or kalyani or even five note raas like moanam. But a twisted raga like kadawatulam, we can only sing a song. We can't elaborate. But actually we can. So we'll just bring in kadanagotam mood by singing a few rounds of swarams. I will just sing something you can listen and repeat very simple only.
And now we sang three notes. No mama.
Can you sing five? You can try yourself without my singing.
>> So [music] Very good.
Correct. So, so some people pick up very quickly, some people pick up little slowly and some people pick up very slowly. But the video of the entire session will be given to all of you in person and online also. So if you happen to be little slow absolutely no problem you can watch again and again and take your own time.
I was a very slow learner. So my heart is with the slow learners only. [music] So that many people say sir how are you so patient? Because my guru had to be very patient with me. So I remember that.
N choo choo choo [singing] choo ch nchech. Fore!
Foreign! Foreign!
V go So and when we sing Raindraat Tagore songs the approach is completely different from how we sing karnatic music. The way we cut the lyrics, the way we take our breath, everything is completely different. And we have absolutely no freedom to add or alter anything. It has to be if this song whether I sing, you sing or Hmed Kumar sings or pank Malik or Talat Mah anybody sings it will be exactly the same. So only the there's background music between Palvi and Palvi that different composers have put different music but the tune and the way we sing is exactly the same.
And it's much more suppose we sing atana for example ori So this is hard singing. This is exactly opposite. It's very very very soft.
[music] This particular song especially.
So [singing] gaga push money.
So in Hindi if you say parasi parasi becomes poros money in uh Bengali the sapuna will become shapuno. So some so many words are actually Sanskrit type root only the pronunciation changes. So So till pran everything is g only ga ga till then only one single note still it creates a mood we are standing only one note only so till then same note Sam. Can somebody tell not Gary starting was correct?
Ah very very good.
>> [snorts] >> So pran so gigama is not there from it goes slowly in fact there's one malalam joke when I said slowly I remember there's a chemistry professor who wanted to tell a student you have to pour an acid from one test tube to the other test tube so he's just pouring it like that so no no no no he wanted to say you pour slowly but he didn't know English very Well, so he said no no no don't pour you pour.
So also is like with pouring acid only. So we still have 15 minutes before we start. Would somebody like to sing something? Yeah.
>> You have never sung that. That's okay.
First time. So you you know your >> G. Okay. G.
>> This not a classical song. Sir, >> it's okay. Whatever you like.
Mother [singing] remari.
Good.
[singing] [screaming] Remma [singing] gi po.
[singing] Would you like to sing something?
>> Uh yes sir. Uh just a minute. Uh we wanted to show my sister B. You had seen my son.
>> Okay.
>> Uh >> hi. Hi. [laughter] >> So she's one week old.
>> One week old.
>> New addition. Younger student.
>> I thought [laughter] >> I thought she she was one hour old.
He looks like it.
>> Yeah.
Very nice. So you you just wanted to show me the baby or you want to sing also?
>> I'll sing also.
>> I sing also. Okay. You can you have there? [laughter] >> You have Shi there. No.
>> Uh yes sir.
>> Yeah. So in whatever you like, whatever song you like, you can sing.
Okay, it's the second Jesy [singing] Oh, nice.
Y the ne Oh, that's so slosa.
sam warm neither.
That's a But I heard Oon sing it in Bihag.
So I told Balam said sir I like that tune more.
I've heard that one. So but I like this more. So I told Balam said sir uh oh sen tuned it like this and I like that a lot but what is there you sing like that no [laughter] he said so see he was very cool about it no only my tune he was never like so but mostly I I liked his tunes maximum so mostly I sing that yeah cooker for a Guru [screaming] save my guru.
Shand guru.
They har [music] like Knees [music] gab.
Sunny, >> summer [singing] s >> sun sa sun.
Ta. Bye-bye. So, thank you very much online people, offline people. Thank you very much for making these two days very very very very special. So, thank [music] you Gharitu for so much effort you put in every time making it so professional. So, I hope you enjoyed these songs most of which you may not get from other sources. So please practice nicely. The video will be ready because there's editing. It's not like an online class. Online class means we just finish it and video is ready immediately because it's a hybrid. There are people in the room and one camera is here. So it'll take a few days for the video to be uh ready. So please don't keep messaging Haritagen is when will you get the video? When will you get the video? Video will come. So yeah, you can didn't get very formed. So I thought I didn't want to disturb video guru. So that next time we'll do and any of you if you practice it and perfect it, you are most welcome to record it and share it in the WhatsApp group.
>> Thank you sir. Thank you for braving the heat and teaching for two beautiful mornings. So thanks a lot. A big round of applause for sir [applause] each note explaining the meaning going through all the nuances giving the history behind giving credit to the composer. So we're really grateful. I don't think we'll get it from any other source. So thank you for that. Thanks to both the online participants who are there and the p people in this beautiful venue sapney.
