Ukraine’s shift toward ground robotics marks a transition to a war of industrial attrition where machines replace human lives in the most lethal zones. This evolution redefines the battlefield as a contest of technological capacity rather than traditional infantry valor.

Robots penetrate the "kill zones" of the Russian army; Putin's soldiers flee
Added:Ukrainian troops are increasingly facing challenges crossing the multi-kilometer kill zone on the front, which has turned the approach to forward positions into a separate combat operation. As Business Insider reports, moving through this section of the front sometimes takes several days and is becoming the most dangerous part of the mission. The kill zone is a strip along the front line heavily occupied by reconnaissance and attack drones. In most areas, it is 10 to 20 km wide and according to Ukrainian officials, its boundaries are constantly expanding. Ukraine's first deputy minister of defense, Oleksiy Vyskub, notes that the zone size could double by the end of this year. To minimize casualties in the kill zone, Ukraine is trying to minimize the use of [music] personnel in front line logistics, replacing them with unmanned systems and ground robots. This, according to officials, should reduce the risks to personnel [music] who are under constant threat of air attack. According to Andriy Grytsenyak, head of the Brave 1 platform, modern warfare as a whole is rapidly changing and becoming increasingly robotic. While artillery dominated the battlefield in 2022, drones now carry out more than 80% of strikes, Grytsenyak says. Oleksiy Vyskub is convinced that the importance of technological progress during war is often underestimated. While many Ukrainian commanders lack traditional military training, they are adept at working with data, which stimulates innovation on the battlefield.
Traditional, classic warfare with infantry, artillery, [music] and people clashing against each other is, unfortunately, becoming a thing of the past, Vyskub said. The future of Ukraine's front line might not walk into the kill zone. It might roll in on tracks, [music] carrying ammunition, water, food, equipment, and the kind of risk no human [music] should have to carry if a machine can do it instead.
Ukraine now plans to contract 25,000 ground robotic systems in the first half of 2026, according to Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. That is not a small tech experiment tucked away in a dusty workshop. That is a serious wartime push to move more dangerous frontline jobs from soldiers to machines. And the important part is this. These robots are not just sitting around looking futuristic for promo videos. They are already working. Ukraine's Ministry of Defense said Ukrainian forces carried out more than 9,000 frontline missions using unmanned ground vehicles in March alone. Over the first 3 months of 2026, the total reached nearly 24,500 missions. In November 2025, only 67 Ukrainian units were using these systems. By March 2026, that number had grown to 167.
That is the real story. Not robot soldiers marching around like a bad movie poster. Frontline work. Dirty work. Dangerous work. The kind of work that usually means a soldier has to move across open ground while Russian drones, artillery, and surveillance systems are watching. Ukraine is trying to change that. The Ministry of Defense says these unmanned ground vehicles are being used for ammunition delivery, logistical support, and casualty evacuation.
