Welcome back to Simple Things, [music] Surprising Histories. Today, we aren't talking about the spiritual afterlife.
Instead, we're looking at the fascinating, surprising, [music] and remarkably well-understood biological journey your body begins after your heart stops beating. From a mysterious final surge in the brain to the way we eventually return to the Earth, the science of death is just as complex as the science of life. [music] Let's uncover exactly what happens when you die.
The journey begins with what doctors call clinical death. Your heart stops, your breathing ceases, and blood stops flowing. For a long time in medical history, this was considered the absolute end, but modern science has revealed something surprising. As oxygen levels rapidly fall, the brain undergoes a brief period of intense electrical activity before its functions begin to fail. Recent neurological recordings from a small number of dying patients have detected a brief surge in brain activity, including increased gamma wave activity. Gamma waves have been associated with memory processing, attention, and conscious awareness, although scientists are still studying exactly what they mean during dying.
Some scientists have suggested this phenomenon could help explain reports of life flashing before your eyes or certain aspects of near-death experiences, although the evidence is still limited. Your brain may be producing one final burst of coordinated activity before its functions finally cease.
Once the brain powers down, the physical body begins to change in a highly predictable, step-by-step way. First comes algor mortis, or the cooling of the body. Without your metabolism acting like an internal furnace, your body gradually cools until it matches the surrounding environment, although the rate depends on factors such as clothing, body size, humidity, and room temperature. Next is livor mortis.
Because your heart isn't pumping, gravity takes over. Your blood settles in the lowest parts of your body.
Finally comes the one you've probably heard of, rigor mortis. A few hours after death, calcium remains trapped inside muscle cells because energy is no longer available to pump it away. This causes the muscles throughout the body to temporarily stiffen. Interestingly, in the Middle Ages, people didn't fully understand this biological settling process. When bodies naturally shifted, swelled, or released trapped gases during decomposition, these unfamiliar changes contributed to terrifying historical myths about vampires and the restless dead. Over the next few days, that stiffness fades and nature steps in to reclaim its materials. Enzymes inside your cells, along with bacteria that naturally live in your body, begin breaking down tissues in a process called decomposition.
While modern history introduced chemical embalming, a practice popularized during the American Civil War to preserve fallen soldiers for the long train ride home, the natural state of a body is to decompose. Over months or years, depending on the environment, bacteria, insects, fungi, and other organisms gradually break down soft tissues until the skeleton remains. Given enough time in the right environmental conditions, even bones gradually break down and return their minerals to the environment. Every single atom that once made you is recycled back into the soil, the plants, and the atmosphere.
Ultimately, death is also a remarkable natural process of recycling. The very atoms that built you will go on to build entirely new life.
