[00:00:24]The Hadza people in Tanzania have lived in the same valley for over 50,000 years.

[00:00:30]Their oral history is split into four eras, starting with the Akakanebe.

[00:00:35]Basically, legendary giant hairy people who didn't use fire or tools.

[00:00:40]This timeline actually matches the archaeological record pretty well.

[00:00:44]Because the Hadza have been isolated for so long, some scientists think those giant hairy beings aren't just myths.

[00:00:52]They might be literal folk memories of Homo erectus who lived in the same area.

[00:00:57]It sounds like a stretch until you realize how long they've been telling these stories.

[00:01:03]She's known as Mitochondrial Eve.

[00:01:06]To be clear, she wasn't the only woman alive back then. She's just the one whose maternal line never broke.

[00:01:12]Everyone else's female lineage eventually hit a dead end.

[00:01:16]Geneticists traced her back to Africa about 200,000 years ago.

[00:01:20]She had no idea she was special. She was just living her life.

[00:01:25]But thanks to an unbroken chain of daughters, every single person on Earth today carries her genetic signature. She is, quite literally, everyone's ancestor.

[00:01:37]On the flip side, we have Y chromosomal Adam.

[00:01:41]Since the Y chromosome only goes from father to son, researchers can trace it back to a single guy in Africa about 208,000 years ago.

[00:01:50]Just like Eve, he wasn't the only man around, but his was the only paternal line that didn't fizzle out.

[00:01:57]He's the ultimate founding father, and he probably spent most of his time just trying not to get eaten by something.

[00:02:03]Most people think humans chose to tame cats.

[00:02:07]The DNA says otherwise, and honestly, it makes cats look way more calculated.

[00:02:13]Wild cats noticed that human farms attracted a lot of tasty rodents.

[00:02:17]They basically moved in, realized the deal was good, and stayed almost genetically identical to their wild ancestors for thousands of years.

[00:02:26]Humans didn't select them. Cats just decided we were useful.

[00:02:31]We've basically been their roommates for millennia.

[00:02:34]In 1933, a woman in Georgia named Amelia Dolly was recorded singing a song she learned from her ancestors.

[00:02:42]She didn't even know what the words meant, but researchers eventually realized it was Mende, a language from Sierra Leone.

[00:02:50]Years later, they found a woman in remote African village singing the exact same funeral song.

[00:02:56]It had survived 200 years of slavery and separation on both sides of the Atlantic.

[00:03:02]In 1997, the two families finally met.

[00:03:05]It turns out some things are too powerful for history to erase.

[00:03:10]The aurochs was the massive grumpy ancestor of every cow you've ever seen.

[00:03:15]Julius Caesar actually wrote about them, saying they were almost as big as elephants and incredibly strong.

[00:03:21]While we domesticated their cousins, the wild ones were hunted as trophies for centuries.

[00:03:27]The very last one, a female, died in a Polish forest in 1627.

[00:03:33]Now, all we have left are their much more relaxed descendants.

[00:03:43]Scientists have mostly ditched the missing link idea because evolution wasn't a straight line, it was a bush.

[00:04:36]The original wild species, Malus sieversii, still grows there today near a city called Almaty, which literally means father of apples.

[00:04:52]They traveled west along the Silk Road, mixed with some European crab apples, and eventually became the snacks we know today.

[00:05:39]For a long time, they were surrounded by myths, like they were descendants of shipwrecked Portuguese sailors.

[00:05:52]In a time when having African ancestry meant losing your rights, families claimed they were Portuguese or Indian to keep their family safe.

[00:06:01]It's a story of people rewriting their own past just to have a future.

[00:06:06]Believe it or not, you're more closely related to a mushroom than to a banana.

[00:06:11]We share a common ancestor with fungi about 1.3 billion years ago. Well, our split from plants happened even earlier.

[00:06:31]About 10% of people with European roots have a mutation that makes them resistant to HIV.

[00:07:26]Ancient Germanic tribes were so terrified of bears that they wouldn't even say their real name.

[00:07:35]So, they started using a nickname, bero, the brown one.

[00:07:41]They used the nickname so much that the original word was completely forgotten in the Germanic languages.

[00:07:47]Other languages kept it, like the Latin ursus.

[00:07:51]But for us, the nickname just became the name.

[00:07:55]It's like if we were so scared of Voldemort that we actually forgot his name was Tom.

[00:07:59]In Maori tradition, Hawaiki is the sacred homeland.

[00:08:03]You'll notice it sounds a lot like Hawaii, but it's actually a concept that Polynesian explorers carried with them everywhere they went.

[00:08:11]The word literally means homeland, and as they settled different islands, they named them versions of that word.

[00:08:18]Savai'i, Hawai'i, and eventually Hawaii.

[00:08:23]It wasn't just a place.

[00:08:25]It was a portable idea of where they came from.

[00:08:28]About a quarter people in Jamaica have Irish ancestors.

[00:08:32]This started in the 1600s when thousands of Irish people were shipped to the Caribbean as prisoners and laborers.

[00:08:39]They lived and worked right alongside enslaved Africans, and the cultures eventually blended.

[00:08:46]You can still see it today in surnames like Murphy or Collins, and even in the accent.

[00:08:51]History is full of unexpected crossovers.

[00:08:55]When the Mayflower landed in 1620, things went poorly.

[00:09:00]Half the passengers died that first winter.

[00:09:03]Only about 26 families actually survived and had kids.

[00:09:07]That is a tiny starting group.

[00:09:09]But today, more than 30 million people, including 10% of the US, are descended from those few survivors.

[00:09:17]It's just the power of exponential growth over 400 years.

[00:09:21]A few cold, struggling people on a beach turned into tens of millions of modern-day descendants.

[00:09:28]The Black Death killed nearly 60% of Europe, but it wasn't random.

[00:09:33]It targeted the weak, leaving behind a population that was technically much healthier and more robust.

[00:09:40]After the plague, the number of people living past 70 actually doubled.

[00:09:44]It also spread immune mutations that gave survivors a 40% better chance of making it.

[00:09:50]It was a horrifying way to get there, but your immune system is still benefiting from those survivors today.

[00:09:57]There's a theory called the stoned ape hypothesis.

[00:10:01]It's not exactly mainstream science, but it's definitely interesting.

[00:10:06]Terence McKenna argued that our brains grew so fast because early humans started eating psychedelic mushrooms they found in the grass.

[00:10:14]He thought it improved their hunting and helped them develop language.

[00:10:19]Most scientists roll their eyes at this because there's no proof, but it remains a fun way to try and explain one of biology's biggest mysteries, why our brains doubled in size so quickly.

[00:10:30]Deep in the Okefenokee Swamp, there was a community called the Swampers.

[00:10:35]They were so isolated that their language basically froze in time.

[00:10:39]When researchers visited in the 1900s, they found people using words and grammar from Shakespeare's era.

[00:10:47]They were speaking a version of English that had died out everywhere else centuries ago.

[00:10:52]They hadn't changed because they never had a reason to.

[00:10:56]In the early 1900s, German was everywhere in the US.

[00:11:01]There were 800 German newspapers and millions of speakers.

[00:11:04]Then World War I happened. And suddenly speaking German looked disloyal.

[00:11:10]Schools were shut down and families stopped teaching it to their kids to avoid trouble.

[00:11:15]In just two generations, one of the biggest language communities in the country almost completely vanished because of wartime politics.

[00:11:24]Most adults in the world are actually lactose intolerant.

[00:11:28]That's the default for humans.

[00:11:30]Being able to drink milk as an adult is actually a recent mutation that appeared about 4,000 years ago.

[00:11:37]It spread fast because it gave people a huge advantage during crop failures.

[00:11:41]Milk was a reliable food source when nothing else was growing.

[00:11:45]The ones who could digest it survived, and that's why it's so common in certain parts of the world today.
