Four Units at my Friend's Gym are Down - HVAC Service Calls
Added:Hey friends, I am here out here in beautiful Simei Valley. It looks like it's going to be a hot day today. So, my friend works here at this gym and he has a couple of units. Um, he also has two exhaust fans for the locker rooms. Um, but right away you see I see a panel that's gone. Um, I'm not sure if you can see, but we'll we'll check it out later. But that return panel is missing. I could just see it and I just got got up here. That return panel for that unit over there.
Um, and a little oil stain on that unit, too. Um, and then look at this unit here. This one's missing the panel, too, completely. Like, it's missing that panel is over there. And I mean, I don't know what's going on, but I'm I'm just gonna focus on uh on um three units that are specifically not cooling that are critical for the gym, which are these two, I believe. It might be that one there, but these two. And then there's another unit that somehow has um two thermostats. So, um stay tuned. I'm going to try to get uh the most uh footage I can. Um, and hopefully, I mean, it seems like there might be electrical issues from based on what I've heard, but uh, we'll see what happens. All right, enjoy.

[music] >> Okay, so what I do a lot of the times is before I even start working on it, I asked them I asked my friends and some of the co-workers. I asked my friend and some of the co-workers here, what are some of the symptoms? and they said that it feels like a heater turned on when the equipment turns on. So, right away that tells me two things. Either they maybe it's low on charge and when they turn it on, you're pulling that hot air from the return and just push pushing it through the um supply vents. But they did they did say the word heater. So, right away I'm thinking it's a heat pump. It's not wire wired correctly. And when they're calling for cooling, it's actually heating because it's not wired.
the thermostat is not working.
Something's going on. So, I'm going off of now. I'm thinking it's a heat pump wiring um issue. So, um we'll see. We'll see what happens. So, honestly, when you go to places where there's a lot of units, it's kind of hard to see which one's which. But these two for sure are in the area where they um they're having issues. So, um I am going to go ahead and put my umbrella because it is hot today. Um it's uh expecting for for what triple digit weathers here in uh Southern California. So it's going to be hot. So um I didn't bring my gauges up. I'm just going to go off of my my field piece uh probes. So they we're all on the same page here. Um so okay, so I haven't done anything to the unit. Uh, so I'm going to just going to go ahead and uh turn on the system. Uh, check the filter out. I believe the filters are up here. You know, I should have asked him yet cuz you got to check um you got to first check um air flow. Always air flow. So, but like I said, I'm really I really think it's going to be a uh um Whoa. An electrical issue.
Okay. So, let's put this here. I mean, nothing's staring at me from what I could see.
Um, I would like to see where the filter Let's see if they have a filter here.
The filter's probably going to be down there. Interesting. Look at this. Can you open this? Let me see. Oh, it's got a screw there. I wonder if the filter's right there. If not, I'm going to have to go down and and and check. Oh, look at that. I got one of these mesh filters and it is ah I never like these. They're washable, but look, you can't really see through them. So, um I want to recommend for them to get a filter, but look, they they customized it. They cut it so that it would fit there, but it's not really good for air flow. So, the coil is not too bad, but I am still going to recommend for them to get a filter and look at the sheet metal to keep the filter from going that way. That's a nice uh clip. So, I'm going to put this outside so I don't forget. I'm going to go ahead and close this. I'm thinking this might be for the locker room. Um for fresh air. Could be for the stretching room. I'm not sure. But I'm going to put that filter there for now.
Make sure it doesn't fly out. Maybe just kind [clears throat] of put it here tucked in. So, so with this unit here, what I'm going to do, I'm going to do the easy thing first. I'm going to go ahead and call for cooling, but um now obviously not not heating.
They're getting heating right now. I think I'm getting a phone call. It might be my my friend. Oh, no. What's it's my wife calling and um I I don't know. I'll let her know. The reason why I didn't pick up was uh because of you guys. You guys uh it's your guys's fault. Just kidding. Not going to blame it on you guys. But um she she'll understand. I'll call her right now. Hey, when you're out in the field, that happens a lot. I call you, something happens, and you know, I don't have kids, but my wife does call and I do my best to pick up. But, uh, I'll call her right now. You know how that go. Those that are married, you know how it goes, right? You know exactly how it goes. Okay. So, right away, I know it's a heat pump. I don't see any gas lines going to the unit.
And the orange wire is for the uh reversing valve. And I'm thinking this is going to be one of those carrier units or Brian. Yep. So carrier mix Bryant. Um so what I'm going to do, I'm not going to go too crazy. I'm just going to check. I got power, right? So uh that contacttor looks a little pitted, but I mean it's not too bad. So okay, I got 203 volts.
Okay. And between I know some of the thermostats down there did not have um what is it? They didn't have any um power. So this one I'm just going to check. I have a 24 volts. Yep. 24 volts.
Okay. So if I of course if if uh those that are in the HVAC field or um I'm sure you already know, right? When you want to get cooling, you have to connect [snorts] um two um two specific uh three, but it depends what brand it is. If it's a reed, bard, and rudd, those default to cooling. You have to energize the reversing valve to get heating. But most you energize just you energize the reversing valve to get cooling, but they default to heating.
So, this one here, the moment I do RNY, I'm thinking it's going to start um heating, but I'm going to go ahead and check man. So, you saw what happened there.
So, what happened there? I uh that was my fault. Um so, I touched it, it turned on, and then it came off. Then I try touched it again. Now, it's a five. Now, it's in a 5m minute delay, which is uh I'm not going to wait. So, the way you speed this up. So, you guys see this right there? Let me see if I can get you guys. Right there. You see next to that plug? It says speed up. Speed up right there. All you got to do is just a short dose. So, let's see if that works.
There we go. Turned on.
Turned on. Condenser fan turned on.
Awesome.
So, um I am going to go ahead and connect my probes cuz as you know, you got to wait the for the [music] unit to to um stay on a couple of minutes [music] to get the right pressures. But right here, it should start getting cold. There we go.
You see it's cold here. So, it's cold up there. So, that's heating down there, though. So, that's not good. So, I'm going to go ahead and energize the reversing valve just to make sure we don't have an electrical issue. I really think it's bad. It's not wired right down there, but okay.
I just heard the uh reversing valve shift.
Um let's see what we got. We got the suction line right here. And we got the discharge line right here. Um now before I start going crazy, ooh man, that discharge [music] line is hot.
Um let me see.
That discharge line is super hot.
I'm going to go [music] ahead and check amp draw. So, this is going to be a single phase. You tend to check the black one. That's your common. I'm pulling 8.7 amps. 8.7 amps. So, um you know, we still have to let it run, right? Um you can't rush the process.
You can't rush the process. But I am going to connect my probes just to see where we're at with pressures cuz I mean I'm not going to be checking super heat and subcool if they're both if it's low on charge. And with that discharge line that hot a lot of the times it's low on charge, but like I said, I am going to wait and be patient.
It could be a it could be uh um low.
Okay. So, um, some of the employees did go down there to check if, um, this system was, uh, feeding the actual unit that, uh, they had issues with. It doesn't seem like it. Um, I'll be honest, that compressor does [music] not sound healthy. But, um, so this is what what's going on right now. This, uh, the probe, it does not connect. I don't know if you see that little, uh, core valve there, the max core valve. Let's see if you're able to see it and and get a better image of it of that of that. So you see [music] it's a little bit crooked. So um what I Okay, go back to one.
Okay. Um I [music] tried to connect it and it wouldn't it wouldn't grab. It wouldn't read the pressure and I tried to move it right in the middle and it still wouldn't read. So it's going to be hard to get super heat and sub cool. So, what I'm going to do, normally I don't I do it occasionally. They call it a non-invasive approach. You could technically get your meter maybe away from the sun. You don't want that radiant heat and put it like right in the middle of the coil. Tech um typically you got like three coils here.
So, I'll um and then right in the middle of the coils is where it's saturated.
So, I'm going to try to put it through the fence. And that this is not accurate, but I mean I it's better than than nothing. So hopefully that that gives me something. So if it's going up, it's coming down there. It could it could be it could just be one one coil, too. So I'm going to just go ahead and see if I can put it in there. I'll let it do its thing right now.
Um, like I said, it might not be it might not be accurate. So, what I'm going to do though, I am going to just go ahead and check um um delta t um and then connect all my probes.
So, the supply it's going to be 3091.
So, 3091 that's this one. The return it's going to be and it tells you right [music] here, right? 7220. So, return supply and then this is my outside my outdoor dry bulb. Got to turn it on. And it's a 6968 right there. So, someone was asking where it's at. If you see the job link, you just scroll all the way to the bottom. Outdoor dry bulb. So, I'm going to go ahead and put that there.
Okay. And then these I'm going to go ahead and put inside.
Okay. So, with this one, I can't really get a head pressure reading, unfortunately.
And they just don't they just want to make sure it's running. And I do want to give them proper diagnostics, but we'll see. So, it's pretty cold in here. I definitely feel it cold. So, I'm going to go ahead and put that in there.
Oops.
Okay. Make sure it doesn't fall. Be terrible. All right. So, that's in there. I'm only going to put a one screw and then so that it just doesn't it doesn't fall. And these right here, go ahead and put the return.
You see that's not magnetic. I don't want it falling. So, I'm just going to put it. Let's see. I think that's good right there. That's good right there.
All right. So, what's our delta T? So, I think there's nothing wrong with this unit. I think this unit only has Tstat issues on the bottom.
So, my delta T right now, man, that's that's 27 26.
Um, let me see. Well, was I? Yeah, you see. I was not able to get a good reading off of this. It's 92 degrees, but your head pressure, your saturated temperature for your condenser has to be higher than your liquid line. And look at my liquid line. It's 104.
So, um, it's not reading properly. So, I wonder if if if it is up here where I put it, it's going to be it's going to be hard.
So, unfortunately, I'm not able to connect to my high side, unless I fix that. But to remove that, put a service valve, it takes a lot of work. So, uh, what I could do, let me see. This is I don't know if it's a sear 13, 14, 12.
It's an older unit and it doesn't tell you here what kind of sear it is.
um they don't but a lot of times you can get your um ambient temperature so or outdoor air uh temperature 94 plus 20 so and it's not this is not exact you got to you got to see um um uh what sear it is but let's say it is a sear 14 96 plus 20 that's 106 116 so spec technically speaking let's just say it's 116 116 16 saturated temperature, right? Minus my liquid line. That gives us a subcooling of 11.
In the case that that was the case. So, subcooling 11 superheat 16. I think this unit is running running good. And I'm not going to spend more time. I think there's a um um electrical um I think it's not wired wrong right down there.
So, I'm going to go ahead and put everything back. Delta T of 23. This unit is running strong. So, this unit, I'm going to go and put everything back and then I'm going to work on that unit and we'll see if there's anything wrong with that package unit. Now, okay. So, I wanted to save you guys the time with this unit. I went I went ahead and connected the probes. I connected my um temperature probes to get delta t, my outdoor dry bulb um temperature, my probes um and then I haven't connected my clamps. So, I'm going to do that right now. Um, one thing that I didn't want you guys to um, uh, see with this unit specifically, you got to close the panel on these York units because you want the air to pull in only through the coil, not here.
There's no coil here. So, this one has to be closed if you're going to get the right uh, temperature. So, interestingly, they got a they made it easy for us, though, although it's not that clean. And uh, you see right there the wire too. So, I don't think that's that's an issue unless it's rubbing something. But you see how it's it's a it's um the wire is compromised. It's broken. So, you can see the copper, but as long as it doesn't touch anything. I mean, if that were to touch the panel here, then that could create an issue.
But but okay, let's uh go ahead and call for um cooling. So, same thing. I'm going to go ahead and get my alligator clips here.
Um, let's uh call for So, right now, if I do RNY, it should be heating and hopefully that's the case. So, they can I can just energize the reversing valve.
That's it. You see turned on.
So, the middle one here is the true suction line. Um, so let's see. That one's going to be cold. This one's going to be cold. This one's going to be hot.
So, that's Let's see.
Let's give it a second.
But this line right here is hot. Where is this line going to to the outdoor coil? So I mean are we does this one default to cooling or what? What's going on here? Unless unless they are calling for heating down there.
Um let's actually find out before I start even start checking pressures and all that. If they're calling for heat uh cooling down there, sorry.
Then of course the orange one's going to have 24 volts if they're calling for cooling. But there could be another issue. So I'm going to check um common and my reversing valve just to make sure that they're not calling for cooling and I'm controlling it from the thermostat. Oh, that came off. But you know what? I don't think they are because I didn't hear nothing.
Yeah. So let me check the reversing valve power here.
Oh, what do you know? 24 volts.
24 volts. Huh.
So, the reason why I thought it was in cooling mode because the outdoor coil here is the condenser. The indoor coil is the evaporator.
And that is the case. This is receiving 24 volts. But when I remove this, let me see. I didn't hear the reversing valve click.
That's interesting.
So, um, there's definitely something going on right here.
Let me just check the reversing valve here. What power do we got? Ah, you see 24 volts to the reversing valve. But once I remove power to it, let me see.
Okay, now I could hear something.
That's interesting. And I wonder if that that the the reversing valve power. So, okay. So, the reversing valve does work.
I removed it. Now, look. Now, it's going to be heating because this is cold down over there is hot, but we don't want that.
So, I want cooling. So, um but something happened where if I can the reversing valve, the O from the thermostat, if I mess with this, you see nothing happens with the reversing valve. So, there is something going on here.
I don't know what's going on with with the reversing go. So, I'm not even going to check pressures um yet. I'll probably let leave this one somewhat close and then I'm going to go ahead and open the electrical here.
There is something going on, but we'll see. Let's see. Unless I'm thinking maybe the reversing valve has straight 24 volts going to it. Someone just kind of Mickey Mouse did.
Is this the electrical or am I tripping here? Okay. Yeah, this is electrical. So, I had already put my probe there. It's got a good filter.
Right now, I am not checking filters.
Oh, I just heard the reversing valve engage.
What is going on?
What is going on here? Um, little Okay, they have a jumper here.
Oh my gosh.
You guys see that? Let me see. I want to make sure you guys see that. I think I know. I think I see what they did.
They added a jumper between W1 and Y. You see that? Between W1 and Y.
So, I think what happened is certain thermostats I think they're the pro the pro ones. Certain thermostats you do have to jumper Y and W if there's no O.
And the manual will tell you that, but I've never heard of people doing it here on the on the board.
Okay. So, what I'm going to do, I'm going to go ahead and just remove that jumper. I mean, maybe maybe they have jumpers now. I've never heard of that. So, I'm going to take that jumper off.
It turned off on me already.
I wonder if if this hit right here, the where the fuse is at. Um, do we have a speed up here? It turned the compressor turned off on me. But I think, like I said, this part right here touched that.
I don't think it shorted. Um, let me see.
No, I don't think it shorted. That's fine.
Uh, do we have a speed up there? Let me see.
It's very dirty. Yeah, that jumper though, right away that stood out. So, I'm going to go ahead.
Oh, okay. It says test. Okay, there it turned on. That was weird. It turned on again. So, let me go ahead and put that back. Okay, it turned off.
Interesting. So, that jumper was weird.
We'll we'll we'll see that for sure.
Let's check our pressure though.
Um it could be that it's going off of high head pressure cuz I have this open.
So, okay. So, the electrical seems like it got taken care of. I am going to go ahead and close this cuz with these, like I said, you do have to close them.
Make sure they're closed.
All right, that's closed.
All right. So then my suction my suction my head pressure right now we're at 165 PSI static pressure we want 200 to 300 for a 410A system but have in mind it does it did just turn on but it could be low on refrigerant so we'll have to see you know before I before it turns on me what I am going to do is go ahead and connect these right here okay this is my liquid line so this goes where the filter dryer is Where is the What? What am I? Look. Okay. Are you guys seeing that or am I am I going crazy right now? This is the compressor.
This is a discharge line. Follow the discharge line. You got a filter dryer right there.
I mean, can it work? I mean, technically, it's supposed to be on the liquid line, not the discharge line. And that's on the discharge line. Huh.
The liquid line is going to be Where's the liquid line?
Where's the metering device?
Yeah, that threw me off big time. Wow.
Okay. Yeah, there it is. So, they It looks like they have a piston, not a TXV. So, I'll go ahead and put the liquid line right there.
And then the suction line right there.
Okay. All right. So that's interesting though. That that definitely confused me. Usually that's got to be right here, but I don't know what happened. All right, so let's go ahead and see why the system is not turning on now. Make sure this is touching.
All right, so I'm not sure why it's not turning on now, but let's go ahead and check.
So, right away, right now, I want to be checking for 24 volts between Oh, my battery is dying on my meter, of course.
Check between uh Y and common. Yep, we have a call for cooling obviously because I'm jumping it, but yet we're not sending 24 volts to the contactctor.
So, if you look at this, you got the brown tend to be common. The back one, the yellow one. And there's a yellow one that comes out from this one here. You see how right there it says M.
I know it's backwards, but it says M. If you guys can see it. A lot of the times that tends to stand for motor or it could be something that tells you that okay, it's for the contacttor coil. So what I'm going to check is 24 volts between the Yeah, you see. So the board this board is not sending 24 volts to the uh contactctor coil here.
Um, so over here you also see Y and C. So from here they got wires that go from here to there. So I'm going to go ahead and check Y and C over here and see if we got the 24 volts at least coming from here to there. Unless I Oh, you know what? I forgot to tighten this wire back here. I don't think it's that though. Could be. I took that jumper off, right? So okay, now it's tight.
So, let's go ahead and check common and Y. Okay. Yep. We're sending 24 volts from here to there. Okay. So, now they do have a test. Those pins there. You can short them.
So, what I'm going to do, I'm just going to grab my alligator clip and have both of them touch each other. Give it a second. Let's see if that works. If not, we're probably open on on the switch.
There we go. It turned on. So, let's see if that was the issue. Maybe I just didn't tighten it when I removed the jumper.
I'm going to put that back.
Okay. And then, of course, I am going to put this back. So, I'm going to go ahead and let it run for a bit. So, give you guys the right pressures and all that.
And then, I will um show you guys what I'm getting.
Okay. So, um I've let the unit run for a bit. Um I've been scratching my head now for the past 5 minutes. Uh the something is off here.
Um look at my 410A system. Low suction pressure. Make sure you guys are able to see that. Yep. Low suction pressure, high super heat. But then I have a negative subcooling.
Um you know what? Let me check what refrigerant it is. So, I did put 410A.
Um, oh, it's an R22.
What was a dead giveaway here, too, is the high side pressure is 300. Usually for 410A, it's like 450 or 500 PSI. Oh, man.
You know, so it happens. You know, it's hot. And, you know, that one was a 410A, but just cuz this one looks a little bit newer, this is not automatically a 410A.
It's an R22. So that makes sense why these numbers do not make sense. All right. Well, I caught myself there thankfully. I did find another issue there besides the electrical issue. I will show you right now. Oh man. Okay.
So, let's go to R22.
So, um Okay, that makes more sense now.
So, this system does have a piston. Uh it has two pistons, right? Because it's a heat pump. So, we got to go off of um actually we got to go off of delta T.
Uh, sorry. Um, super heat. Target super heat. So, because I have everything connected, I am I'm able I'm able actually to do it and show you guys that we're at at Target. So, let me go to um Google.
Okay. Target superheat chart. I'm just going to go choose the random one. Make sure you guys are able to see. Okay. So, I'm going to have that open. Okay. So, let's go ahead and get So, what you do is your return wet bulb temperature.
Now, these probe these probes there, you're able to do return wet bulb temperature. So, um so thankfully I don't have to get another probe cuz this one's able to do uh return wet bulb and outdoor air temperature. So, my outdoor air temperature is 100°.
100°.
So, I'm going to get my battery here.
Thank you, man. So, buddy of mine got me a battery. My meter died. So, I'm going to put that there and change it out. So, >> thanks, man. I appreciate it. It's 100°.
Meter runs out of battery. I mean, I mean, I almost got the wrong refrigerant right now, and I glad I caught myself, but uh you know, we're correcting we're correcting uh all the the things happening right now. So, okay. So, here.
So, 100°, let's say it's 99, but let's say it's 100. I think they go by even numbers. It's 100° and then my wet bulb temp temperature for my return is 61 61°. So let's say 61 for the wet bulb and 99. So 61 and 99.
So you see they only go off of by by the even number. So we're going to go off of 100. And for wet bulb, what was the wet bulb? It was um 60. We could do 60 or 62. So 100 and then 62.
100 or Yeah. 100 and Oh, that's interesting. Look at that.
100 um outdoor and then 62.
So, there's an X there.
So, if there is an X, what that means is that from what I understand, when there's an X, that means that the compressor is getting liquid. Now when I am looking at the numbers here, I do I am getting a super heat though.
Let's uh see what happens. I thought I saw a super heat of five. There we go.
So I am getting a super heat of five.
But technically under these conditions for a piston when it the outdoor air temperature is 98. So it's 98 now. I guess 98 and wet bulb is 62. So 98. So it's a little bit isn't between 95 and the 8 and 62. So technically it's under an X.
It could be at five, but that's only for 90 degree outdoor air um outdoor air temperature. So technically it does fall right here for 62. And there is an X.
But I wonder if we're okay putting like a three. So you see right there the X is it falls right here. So technically speaking, if it's an X, liquid is hitting the compressor. So, according to this, it's it's saying to uh remove a little bit of refrigerant. The thing that's tricky, though, is I don't know if my gau my probes are calibrated.
It would have to have read zero, but it's reading five. So, now I have to decide if I'm going to remove a little bit to increase the super heat, but I'm probably not based on the target super heat. It's X. It's 0 degrees superheat based on the two numbers, right? return uh wet bulb temperature and outside air temperature. I'm supposed to be right right there. Right. Right on this X right there. And that could be a super heat of two. You see it doesn't it's not really it's not really clear right here.
Right. Eight. And then this XX. So it could be that it's a three here or a two or a one. But you know what? I think I'm going to leave it cuz I am getting a super heat. It's really hot. It's cooling and my my delta T is 25°. But if you're working on new on a new system, you are supposed to if it's a piston, you're supposed to do the target super heat chart. But I'm going to go off with my gut and leave it. It's 5° superheat.
Compressor is not getting um it's not getting um liquid. I have a super heat.
My delta T is 25. It is really hot. And think about it, if it's really hot, if the high head pressure is really high, it's going to push more refrigerant through the piston. And so there's going to be more liquid. But because it's hot down there, um I think we're boiling off all that liquid and we're ending up with the super heater of five. So I'm going to decide just to leave it. I'm not going to recover. Delta T is good. So so far these two units right here, I think we have thermostat issues down there, which we're going to go ahead and and fix. Now that unit all all the way over there, I'm going to show you what's going on with that. But I am going to go ahead and fix the thermostat issues down here on the on the on the occupied space.
Make sure they're cooling with the thermostat, but they are running good with pressure, super heat, and subcool.
All right, guys. So, um, with the thermostat here with this one here, I did check. You got to make sure it's off. Everything was wired. There is another thermostat that was not wired, right? But the green one's on G, orange is on the reversing buff for OB, common, your compressor, and your hot. But with these thermostats, let me just make sure you're able to see.
There's no point in not being able to see.
It's a little bit better. Maybe. Let me see. Uh, but with these thermostats, you're supposed to go to the settings. So, with this one specifically, you got to um hold fan and I think arrow up, hold it for a bit, and you go to the settings. Now, you're supposed to go online and online will tell you. You see right there, it tells you on the phone, select system type.
And then for one, zero, it's just gas.
But I want for a heat pump. For a heat pump, I got to select one. Right now, it's on zero. So, that's why it wasn't working. It wasn't programmed right. So, I'm going to go ahead and put um one one. Make sure you guys are able to see that, right? One one. So, now it's under the heat pump setting. And then we push push done.
So, now it's wired. Right. Program.
Right. Now, I'm going to call for cooling. So, this is good now. Now, I'm going to check the other thermostat. Do the same thing. And then, uh work now towards the third unit that also has issues.
All right. So, I am inside the gym.
Thankfully, this room is not being used.
So, you know, you have to be careful what you're recording, uh, sometimes.
So, um, so the unit for this place is not cooling. And so, I already I just pulled out the thermostat. That's all I've done. I want you to see something.
And I'm going to go ahead and take the camera here so you can see what I'm I'm looking at up here. Let's see. See if I can zoom in.
All right. So, you guys see that? Let me see if I can turn on the light here.
That might not help. But I want you to be able to I want you to look at that closely, right? Look at the wires. Okay?
Just look at the wires for a bit. Okay?
Even if you have to pause the video. So, um, looking at this, I see a couple of things that are that are wrong. My yellow wire does go on Y. My red one is on R. And make sure this blue one here, this has a little blue clip. You see this blue clip? That's your jumper. You You gota always make sure that that is up on these thermostats always. So, make sure that's up. So, R is good. And then my green one goes to my G. The problem is that the white wire is on C and my blue wire is on W.
So, I don't know if this is wired wrong, but the thermostat has no power. So, um, what I can do is check if we have power up there, but if not, I'm going to have to go up to the unit to see if we have um power up there. So, but I'm just going to pull the wires out.
Okay. Let's see if you guys are making sure you guys are able to see this, but I have it on. Yep, that's good. So, all I'm going to do is pull the I might not even I might not even have to pull anything out here, but I'm just going to check pull the the blue wire out and then the Let's see if I can pull that red one out. Okay, so you see I got the blue and the red. I am just going to check if we have power coming down here. Um, that's all I'm going to check. So, let's go ahead and find out.
Okay. So, I'm just going to check. If not, I am going to have to go back up.
Thankfully, this is the third unit out of the four units that was that were not working. The first two I got them going.
Thermostat issues. Um, electric um not wired right up there, but now they're cooling down there. So, right here, you see I am getting zero volts. Now, did they use the W as maybe common? Let's check. white and the red. Yep, no power.
So, there's no power here. Now, we got to go up to the roof and see what's going on now.
All right. So, I uh set up my umbrella.
As you know, it's not uh it's not working right now, but it's all right.
It it covers most of it. It fell on me a couple couple months ago. Um so, I set up I set my bags, right? I just drank some water. You got to stay hydrated. Um, first thing I noticed was that this was open when I got here and they and they had it there. I haven't touched the unit yet. I just got here.
So, that's not good, right? Cuz technically it is fresh air. But, I mean I mean come on. That's if you're going to get fresh air then you got to have to get like that right there. I don't know if you see a little ex a little not like a planet but a little duck coming out where it can just suck suck a little bit of air. That would be the right way. But you see the filters how they're put. I don't know who was maintaining doing maintenance on these, but man, some people some people should just not be doing this because I mean this was open. All it takes is just two screws. It's pretty bad. Um but okay. So, um we're going to go ahead and um let's see. This is probably going to be too big. I'm going to have to let him know to get another filter for this. And air flow is going to be going up. But yeah, it's going to be too big. So, we'll just leave this outside. Um what what I'm going to do um before I even check pressures, we're going to check um electrically what's going on because if you notice, if you remember, there was no power, right? So, here's the here's the electrical right here. I'm going to make my life easy right now. I'm just going to bring bring this umbrella with me. I am not trying to get burned today.
All right. So, got to fix this here a little bit.
That's fine. That works. All right. So, let's go ahead and open this up. Is the disconnect on? Oh, it's off. That's probably why disconnect is off.
Now, before I turn it on, I mean, let me see.
Nothing stands out. You got your three power, three wires coming. So, this is a three. This is a three-phase. Ooh, you saw what I just noticed though. Ah, this is Okay, I want to make sure you guys see this cuz this is dangerous. And commercial guys out there, you guys know you guys understand this. Let me see if I can zoom in.
I don't see any ground wire anywhere.
You see right there? It's missing. So if somehow one of these wires was rubbing this, touching this and this is touching that and then I touch that or when it turns on I touch that, I can get hurt or even get killed. So there's no ground wire. So that's and it's off. That I don't know. I'm already getting uh some warnings here about this unit.
So I'm not even going to turn it on right now. I'm going to leave it off.
I'm going to open up the unit to see uh what's going one. Okay.
Okay. Let's go ahead and uh open the unit up.
Okay. So, I I don't know what's going on with this unit. Um Ooh, look at that.
Look at this wire nut crushed. Um wait, is it a What am I looking at? But it does this does not look like a three face.
What is going on here?

Okay, I'm really confused right now. Oh my goodness. Oh my goodness. This is pretty bad, guys. Um I want to make sure you guys are able to see this. I'm going to put my little camera there. This is pretty bad. So, this unit is not It is not a three-phase. This is a single face, but yet we technically have three wires coming up here. What? This is super weird.
This is really, really bad. Um, the confusing part is that you do have three wires coming from the panel, but this wire is not supposed to be there. That one's supposed to go to the capacitor.
If I sound correctly, this is not a three-phase compressor. I think this is the start winding for the compressor. Oh my gosh, man. I'm telling you, some people should not be doing this cuz uh I don't know what happened here. So, right away, I just noticed that um I am going to go ahead and just check power coming in. Let's see. So, I'm going to check this. Oh, you see that? That is exactly what happened last time. And it broke. And I don't know what's going on with this umbrella, but the base is supposed to be strong and it's not protecting me. So, I don't know.
Let's hopefully it doesn't fall off cuz that's what happened last time. You guys saw, right? I didn't do anything to it.
Um, all right. So, let's go ahead and and check what's going on with power here.
All right. So, let's see. Here's my meter. Okay, let's check these two.

I don't even have power coming from the down there. Yeah, no power. I got no power coming from uh from the breaker. Unless it tripped. Of course, it tripped if this if they had this one. So, the compressor could have been burnt. Oh, I don't know.
Oh, I'm sorry. I'm checking the wrong ones, guys. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It's up here. It's up here. Sorry about that.
This is the power coming from the panel.
This is the one coming going to the unit. So, that's not going to have power. So, up there. Okay. You guys see that? I got 208. Okay. I got 208. Now, I'm going to check that one and this one. 208.
That's funny.
And then we don't have a ground, unfortunately. Yeah. You see, if I would have had a ground, I would have read right there 120. But I don't. So, I got three-phase power coming in. Okay, I got three-phase power [music] coming in. Um, okay. So, I think I know what happened.
I'm just um just thinking about it. Um, they originally, I think, had three-phase They had a three-phase unit here.
Okay. They had a three-phase unit.
Um, and I'm thinking they got a uh this a new package unit, single face, but they wired it up as if it was a three-phase, but it's not. It's not a a a three a three-phase. And I can confirm that unless I am unless the sun's getting to me here.
Okay, so it is actually a three-phase.
That's interesting. First time I see a unit like this. Let me see.
You guys see that compressor phase three and but everything else outdoor fan and indoor fan that's single face. Okay. So, yeah, I stand corrected. This is a three-phase system, but it's still it's still missing a ground, which is not not good cuz that could kill someone if you don't know what they're what they're doing. So, you know what's what's tricky though is that usually if it's a three-phase comp um if it's a three-phase compressor, these three lines, three will go to a contactor with three poles. But if you see that contactor there only has two poles.
It's not not three poles.
So that is what what was confusing at least for myself you know see this umbrella is now starting to get in the way. So that was confusing to me. Instead of a single three pole or three pole contacttor you have a two- pole. So they have this line going straight to the um compressor. Now would that work? You know what? I've never seen it but I'm sure it could work and all and all like just thinking about it could work. got one face, second face, third face. It's just going straight. Yeah, it would work. Now I already see some wires disconnected and all that. But um wow. But yeah, you know what? No ground though. That I am worried about. But okay, let's let's just go ahead and troubleshoot this. I am not going to turn anything on yet because we don't have a ground wire and I am not going to risk my life here. So, but I am going to check.
Okay, so I see another things here too.
So, what was the power that we were getting? This is going to be important right now cuz um I want to show you guys something. I already saw a couple of things. So, it's 208, right? You see that 208 204? So, power is off. You guys see that right there? The uh transformer, I want to see that. You see where the wires are connected? You got the yellow and black on top, the primary. That's uncommon. And on 230, when you do that though, you end up with a lower secondary voltage. So, they were supposed to have this black one here.
Take it out, put it on the 208. Now, you're going to get about 27 volts coming out. That's how it should have been wired there. Um, so before we before, you know what? Before I turn before I turn on the disconnect, and I'm going to be careful as I touch stuff because there's no ground. And I am going to let my my friend know because if he has anyone service this unit, you know, they got to be mindful of this. Let's uh you got to watch out for for the other guys. Um so let me go ahead and take that out cuz I got a crankcase heater. Oh, what is what's this? What's going on? What is going on right here?
Look at that.
So I mean we can omit out tech. I don't I don't have a a mega with me right now, but I will check if there is a dead short to ground that I'm able to do with the meter. But technically, you need a megar and this is an coupling compressor. Coupling compressors, they um want you to check if I had that on zoom in. They want you to check if you're above I want to say half a million ohms when you check with the with the with the um uh with the mega, but we don't have the mega right now.
So, we're just going to check with uh I'm just going to go ahead and check it.
But it looks like it's a little bit burnt there.
Then, let's go ahead and check continuity.
All right. So I cannot get a good number here.
Yeah. See, I cannot get it's this open line.
Unless it really is open line. It's just a bad compressor. Yeah, this is going to be okay. Well, I get I'm getting open line. Just to confirm though, I'm going to go ahead and put it here on that's on millions ohms. But the right way I would have done is just the continuity and you should get resistance. Right. So right now I'm getting open line from here to the copper. But from pin to pin I'm getting open line.
So I am definitely not going to connect this. I am definitely not going to turn it on.
There's no ground. Um, I don't think this is going to turn on at all. But we got issues here. There's a lot of stuff going on. But they disconnected it for a reason. I think that compressor is shot.
It's bad. Bad compressor. You see? So, pin to pin. Nothing.
Nothing.
So, um, yeah, we got a bad compressor here.
A bad compressor. Not because it's shorted, but the pins I don't read any resistance. And it's a three-phase. So I'm supposed to read, let's say, 1.2 between this one, 1.2 between. They're supposed to be the same resistance, but I am reading open line. So compressor is bad.
Oh boy. Well, we tried. There's not much we can do with this unit. So out of the four units, we were able to fix um two. one was wired wrong and um and then the thermostats were programmed for gas furnace, but they were heat pumps. So, two out of the four that wasn't too bad. So, the compressor's got to be swapped out and that's going to be very expensive. And this other unit for the stretching room, if you see right here, see if you guys are able to see here.
You see that blade down there? You see that blade? That blade just fell off shaft of the motor. So, this is probably going off of high head pressure. That fan literally just broke off the shaft.
And you can see it right there. And it hit some of the lines right here. So, I have to check if the refrigerant also leaked out. So, those two are good. And we got these two. They got to get fixed. So, it wasn't a bad day today.
I uh got to see what he wants to do with those two units. Um but I mean, that's just how it is, guys. I mean, sometimes you're going to have uh good days, bad days, or 50/50 days, and it's hard.
The umbrella keeps falling off, but you know, you just got to pull through as you do more and more of calls, whether you're going to school, um, watching videos. Eventually, it just becomes easier, and you just got to continue moving forward and going, and it just clicks.
So, um, but yeah, today wasn't a too too bad of a of a day. Now I got to, uh, make that drive back home, but it's part of the job. So, but I hope that today's video helped you out. You're able to get, um, see some pointers that you can apply in in in your job, things that maybe clicked for you. I mean, these videos are meant for you guys. Hrack is cool, especially when you have a system and how, you know, things work. I mean, it's it's pretty pretty pretty fun. Of course, like this unit here, right?
That's dangerous. With no knowledge, I could have like, "Let me just turn it on." And if it was grounded, I would have gotten shocked. There's no ground wire. Stuff like that. We got to be careful with um but of course, once you have that knowledge and you're careful, I mean, you can you can do nice things, cool things with um within the HVAC um industry.
