Measles is a highly contagious airborne disease that can spread through the air even after an infected person leaves a room, making unvaccinated individuals at high risk of infection; those who may have been exposed should monitor symptoms for 3 weeks including fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and rash, and should call a doctor before visiting if symptoms develop.

Santa Clara Co. resident infected with measles traveled to several Bay Area locations, including SFO
Added:Tonight, many in the Bay Area being warned they may have been exposed to measles. This comes after a case was confirmed in a Santa Clara County resident. That person was at the airport and multiple grocery stores while they were contagious. ABC 7 Eyewitness News reporter Dryden Quigley is in Santa Clara County with what you need to know.
>> A Santa Clara County resident has tested positive for the measles after traveling internationally. Now, the Public Health Department is getting the word out to those who may have been exposed.
>> But someone who is unvaccinated in those circumstances is very likely to get sick.
>> The person landed at the SFO International Terminal on June 8th and went through passport control, customs, and baggage claim. Later that same day, they went to a Trader Joe's and the International Halal Market in San Jose.
So, think back to where you were on Monday. If you have been in these spots during these times, you may have been exposed.
>> It's actually spread through the airborne route, which means somebody who walks into a room after someone with measles has left can still get sick.
>> If you visited any of those three locations during those time periods, the Public Health Department is saying you should monitor your symptoms over the next 3 weeks. Those symptoms can include a fever, runny nose, cough, red eyes, and a rash.
>> I really hope my vaccinations work.
>> I wasn't here on June 8th.
Um but I feel like that should have been publicly known, like a sign or something.
>> For many shoppers at those grocery stores, this was the first time they were hearing about it.
>> That's pretty concerning, especially with all these like screw worms and and everything going around.
>> Department says those who are vaccinated are well protected. It's those who aren't who have the highest risk of getting infected.
>> A year ago, I would have said this is incredibly rare, and now this is already our second case of the year.
>> If you do develop symptoms, they say to call the doctor's office before going in to minimize the spread. In Santa Clara County, Dryden Quigley, ABC 7 Eyewitness News.
